Chapter Index

Bai Chendeng tapped the glass pane again, giving an affirmative reply.

Heng Yuze finally made up his mind, vowing to clear a path for the cat to enter the greenhouse.

Seeing Brother Heng start circling the outside of the greenhouse, looking for an easy entry point, Zheng Lang gasped, finding it hard to believe.

    “Brother Heng!”

He took quick steps, leaning close to Heng Yuze to whisper, “We absolutely cannot do this!”

Heng Yuze was examining the iron frame, looking for heavily rusted spots. When advised against it, he simply stated his resolve: “Brother Zheng, Chendeng must have a reason for wanting to go in, and I have to help it.”

“Hey, our Chendeng is smart, but you’re being too soft and spoiling it too much!”

Zheng Lang was still holding his ground when suddenly, something snagged his trouser leg.

He looked down and saw Chendeng had come up beside him, its small furry face tilted up, looking at him seriously. Those eyes, which always seemed to hold the sky, now reflected a faint, shimmering light—the moon’s reflection.

Zheng Lang felt he must be crazy, or perhaps the cat truly possessed some kind of sorcery. He suddenly understood Heng Yuze; the cat genuinely wanted to go in and truly needed their help.

    “I’m going crazy…”

Zheng Lang clutched his head in frustration, then hardened his resolve, speaking in a harsh, gruff voice: “Brother Heng!”

    “Present.”

    “Did you bring enough money?”

“Enough! Besides cash, there’s the card…”

“Neither of us can go in, only the cat can. Afterward, we have to apologize to the greenhouse owner and compensate them.”

Heng Yuze understood that Zheng Lang was willing to help him and Chendeng, and he smiled and nodded.

“Don’t worry, Brother Zheng, that was my plan too.”

The two began studying the rusted iron frame using natural light. When the light was truly insufficient, they dimmed their phone screens and shone them on the frame for observation.

Finally, near the tightly shut door, close to the ground, they found a section of the iron frame that was clearly rusted through.

Bai Chendeng tapped that section twice, causing rust to flake off and accumulate in a small pile on the ground.

The entire greenhouse must have been quite old for such brittle iron to exist.

Bai Chendeng let out a particularly joyful “Meow,” its impatience clearly audible in its voice.

The wind picked up again, making the surrounding tree branches and leaves rustle incessantly. It sounded as if the trees were laughing in chorus, perhaps at their impending success, or perhaps at something else entirely.

The noise was welcome, providing cover for their upcoming actions.

Nature seemed to favor them; the sound of the leaves never stopped, growing louder and louder. Soon, even quieter tapping sounds were indistinguishable.

The sound of friction hidden within the rustling leaves was also ignored.

The same friction sound that had occurred that night at the residential house appeared, clinging like a maggot to bone, approaching the two men and one cat.

They tapped the iron frame a few times, but nothing came off except rust.

Just as the two men were quietly discussing whether they should resort to more forceful methods, Zheng Lang, tired from bending over for so long, straightened up and stretched for a moment.

As he stretched, he looked around.

It was a good thing he did, because he noticed a subtle change in their surroundings.

Zheng Lang let out a surprised sound, causing Heng Yuze to instinctively look up. The next second, numerous black, slender ghostly shadows emerged from all directions, writhing and surging toward them!

Zheng Lang and Heng Yuze were stunned. One moment they were figuring out how to get the cat into the greenhouse, and the next they were suddenly attacked by a swarm of long, shadowy figures. The overly stimulating scene froze them in place!

Unexpectedly, a black shadow had crept up to Heng Yuze’s feet at some point, wrapping around his ankle and hoisting him upside down!

Heng Yuze was yanked by immense force, leaving him powerless, his backpack dangling precariously from his arm.

Zheng Lang cursed and immediately grabbed Heng Yuze’s leg, finally getting a clear look at what these long, thin, moving shadows were!

    They were branches!

Living, moving branches, as flexible as snakes and astonishingly strong!

In a flash of insight, fragmented thoughts connected: so the sound they had heard that night at the guesthouse was the sound of branches growing and spreading along the ground!

The two adult men barely managed to stabilize the situation. The branches sagged under their combined weight. Zheng Lang reached out to grab the branches, while Heng Yuze, with his upper body close to the ground, seized the opportunity to pull the embroidered ball drum from his backpack!

Throwing the drum out with force, Heng Yuze thought of the old woman who had been struck. It was clear something was controlling her. Since throwing the small drum had a noticeable effect that night, he hoped it would still be useful this time!

An invisible shockwave vibrated through the air, and a deep, heavy drum sound abruptly rang out near their ears. Heng Yuze waited for the branches to release themselves, but to his disbelief, the branches remained completely unchanged after the drum strike.

The evil drum, which he considered his trump card, had no effect on the branches?

Everything happened extremely fast. Zheng Lang hadn’t seen what Heng Yuze did. He heard the drum sound and thought Heng Yuze had a drum hidden in his backpack and had used it to strike the branches.

The reality was similar, except Heng Yuze was using no ordinary drum, but the evil drum. And the evil drum, which was highly effective against flesh-and-blood creatures, had no effect against plants.

Zheng Lang glanced at his hand. Human skin and tree bark were incomparable, but he still acted ruthlessly, clenching his fists and smashing them onto the branches!

The effect of the strike was surprisingly good. The branch recoiled as if a predator had encountered its natural enemy or been burned. It instantly released Heng Yuze’s ankle and retreated quickly.

Heng Yuze regained his freedom. He first put away the small drum, unable to understand why his attack failed while Zheng Lang’s fists played the crucial role.

The two men stood up, watching the constantly spreading branches around them.

In an instant, the area surrounding them, except for a few meters around their position, was completely covered by branches. The branches twisted and coiled on the ground, resembling black-brown giant worms constantly wriggling. It felt less like vibrant life and more like something disgusting.

“Brother Heng, don’t leave my side.”

Zheng Lang’s reaction was near perfect, from grabbing Heng Yuze to prevent him from being dragged away, to punching the branches away, and now maintaining a forced calm without panic. It all showed how reliable this middle-aged man was.

There was no time for further thought. After briefly retreating, the branches immediately surged forward again.

Zheng Lang stood in front, but the branches were pouring in from all directions. He only had two hands, and even using all four limbs, he couldn’t block the pervasive flow of the branches.

In just one encounter, Heng Yuze was seized again, his hands and feet wrapped in branches!

Just as Zheng Lang, eyes red, was about to lunge forward again, a snowy white shadow, like a silent bolt of lightning, shot forward with unstoppable momentum, leaping onto Heng Yuze’s shoulder!

How could Heng Yuze ignore Chendeng? He had known from the start that the cat definitely had its own plan. He just needed to trust the little cat immortal!

Sure enough, after the white cat appeared on Heng Yuze, the branches paused for a moment, then began to writhe even more violently, as if in a frenzy.

Heng Yuze cried out in pain.

Bai Chendeng let out a meow, comforting the human. Gathering its strength, and illuminated by the moonlight tonight, every strand of its fur carried a moist, moonlit sheen, radiating a cold spiritual energy. It pounced onto the branches wrapped around Heng Yuze!

Like a crescent moon plunging into a black lake, the white cat’s form was graceful. In the pitch-black night, it was the only source of light.

    Zheng Lang watched in awe.

As Bai Chendeng stepped across them, the moonlight enveloped the black-brown branches like a light veil.

The sacred, pure moonlight purified all evil energy, penetrating the branches like sharp, tiny blades of light.

Heng Yuze was pleasantly surprised. The branches restraining him suddenly lost their strength. He struggled lightly and broke free from the bondage.

Bai Chendeng landed on the ground at the same time.

A gust of wind blew past. The fibers lost their vitality, and the branches instantly turned into dust, scattering onto the earth.

This immediate, dramatic effect stunned the observing Zheng Lang.

“The cat… the cat… is glowing?”

Although he prided himself on having a tough fate that warded off ghosts, Old Zheng had never seen a living immortal in all his years.

Bai Chendeng’s single strike destroyed a large number of branches. However, the branches surrounding them were still dense and seemingly undiminished.

Just then, a sharp “crack” sound came from the greenhouse.

The two men and one cat looked toward the sound and saw that the branches had actually pierced the glass pane, creating a large hole in the greenhouse.

Bai Chendeng’s pupils contracted slightly. He immediately chased after it. Clumps of branches were writhing and entering. The white cat cut down every branch it encountered as it rushed toward the breach.

In a matter of seconds, Bai Chendeng reached the edge of the hole.

Quite a few branches and leaves had already slipped inside. And in places Bai Chendeng couldn’t see, perhaps this entity was entering through other openings. In any case, he had to enter the greenhouse now.

He turned his head one last time to look at the two men.

    “Meow—”

    Take care of yourselves.

Then, without hesitation, he dashed inside.

Night Chrysanthemum (Yejú) was a new variety carefully cultivated by Feng Chengji, the third-generation successor of the Feng family in Kuju Village. It only bloomed at night, its flowers as large as silver plates and breathtakingly beautiful.

Feng Chengji, the greenhouse owner, wore a headscarf and leaned next to a dim yellow night lamp, intently gazing at a flower bud.

He was hardworking and patient, and after more than ten years, he had finally cultivated the Night Chrysanthemum.

This particular flower was the most outstanding one he had ever grown. He had invited twelve fellow plant enthusiasts to admire the moment of its beautiful bloom.

He estimated the flower wouldn’t open tonight.

He had arranged for the twelve guests to stay in the guest rooms connected to the greenhouse. They had eaten together, and the others were asleep, but he refused to rest, not wanting to miss any possible moment of the Night Chrysanthemum opening.

Feng Chengji sat on a small stool, his long legs curled up. His eyes showed fatigue, but his senses were suddenly triggered. He seemed to detect something, causing his nerves, which were tending toward rest, to gradually tighten until a sound of shattering glass made him jump up.

    “Who is it?!”

Was it a bird, a cat, a dog?

    Or…

    A person?

Feng Chengji grabbed the night lamp, intending to check the situation, but in the periphery of the lamplight, he saw the residual image of something flashing past.

He sternly repeated, “Who is it?”

Branches instantly spread throughout the greenhouse, searching for something.

Evil demons possessed the power to cause great calamity, yet they dared not expose themselves to humans, because human vitality would shatter the outer shell of resentment and malevolence they carried, causing them severe damage.

Therefore, the tree demon did not want to rampage inside the greenhouse. For a demon like this, with a history of evil deeds, minimizing its influence and reducing its presence was a habit ingrained in its very being.

Feng Chengji spun around where he stood, feeling a strange fluctuation filling his glass greenhouse from all directions. Only the area illuminated by the lamp remained relatively clean.

At this point, he dared not venture further. He slowly moved closer to the Night Chrysanthemum and tried to pick up the flower and leave.

Just then, a small, snowy white creature shot toward him like a cannonball. Feng Chengji was startled. He could only clutch the flowerpot tightly, not daring to let go.

Through the glass, bright silver light spilled down. Feng Chengji clearly saw that the small creature was a cat, a snowy white cat that seemed to be glowing.
