Chapter 59 Go to the Hospital to Keep Me Company

Xia Li and Jian Guo fell silent.

After a long while, they both reached out, cautiously checking the temperature of the other’s forehead, and said in unison, “I don’t have a fever.”

Then they pinched each other’s ears. “It hurts, so we’re not dreaming.”

A long time passed again, and Xia Li gave an awkward laugh. “Lu Shangyan, you are not suited to making jokes like that.”

If Lu Shangyan hadn’t immediately lifted his shirt to show them his belly, she really would have burst out laughing on the spot. Because whenever Lu Shangyan was around them, the changes in his facial expression were minimal, like an old cadre. If he suddenly cracked a “joke” like this, she would absolutely lose it!

But that belly… made it impossible for her to laugh.

Lu Shangyan looked at them, his tone firm. “It’s true.”

Jian Guo took a deep breath, inhaling until he couldn’t take in any more air. His eyes rolled back, and he looked like he was about to faint. “No way, are you cross-dressing?”

Lu Shangyan shook his head. “I don’t know why this happened, but it has.”

Jian Guo lowered his head, momentarily unsure what to do. He picked up the chopsticks on the table and then put them down. His hands were shaking uncontrollably. “How can you be pregnant? Did you only just find out? Why did you choose to keep it?”

“Did you not know you were pregnant at first, so you treated it as an ‘illness,’ which is why you dragged it out until now? If that’s the case, I have to warn you, after treating it for so long, the baby might not be healthy. Although it’s quite far along now, if you abort it, it should… damn it, I don’t even know if it’s too late!”

Lu Shangyan opened his mouth. He knew that his current appearance might seem very strange to outsiders, but there were some things he didn’t need to explain too clearly. “I want to keep it.”

Jian Guo’s eyes were red as he looked at Pei Yumin beside him. “Did he force you to have it?”

“No.” Lu Shangyan denied it quickly, then slowly and carefully added, “I forced him to let me keep it.”

Pei Yumin was also confused. He turned to look at Lu Shangyan, and just as he was about to say something, Lu Shangyan squeezed his palm, and he immediately pursed his lips and stayed silent.

Jian Guo’s breathing was ragged. After a long time, he slowly nodded. “Since it’s your decision, I support you.”

“Don’t take what I just said to heart. I was just afraid you weren’t doing this voluntarily. After all, a man being pregnant, if word gets out…” Wouldn’t that make him a monster in other people’s eyes?

“I don’t want people to look at you strangely. Plus, you haven’t known Pei Yumin for very long. You’re taking such a huge risk carrying this child, and I’m afraid you’ll get hurt.”

At first, Pei Yumin thought Jian Guo would immediately flip out after saying that, but he didn’t expect Jian Guo to accept it so quickly. He looked at Jian Guo, understanding that everything Jian Guo did and said was for Lu Shangyan’s benefit.

Even if he unconsciously attacked everyone around him, he truly stood completely behind Lu Shangyan, speaking up for him unconditionally.

No wonder Lu Shangyan risked telling him the truth, and no wonder Lu Shangyan never got angry despite his “blunt” remarks. It turned out Lu Shangyan knew all along that Jian Guo was the one he could trust, from beginning to end.

Pei Yumin looked at Jian Guo and said with certainty, “Don’t worry. I will use every means possible, find the best doctors, and use the most advanced technology to ensure nothing happens to him.”

Jian Guo glared at him, grinding his teeth. “You better keep your word!”

After speaking, he pulled out a tissue and covered his face. For a moment, he had deeply imagined how helpless and terrified he would be if he were the one pregnant.

His heart ached for Lu Shangyan.

Xia Li was still petrified on the side. Listening to their conversation, her gaze remained fixed on Lu Shangyan’s belly, not moving an inch. She sat there in a daze, as if isolated from the world.

Only when Lu Shangyan zipped his shirt back up did she suddenly blink several times, shifting her gaze back to Lu Shangyan’s face.

Her worldview had just undergone the largest reorganization in her twenty years of life, all within a few short minutes.

    “Holy crap!”

This was the first time she had ever cursed so emotionally.

Lu Shangyan was startled by her sudden roar.

Xia Li rubbed her face. “Lu Shangyan, you’ve been keeping a huge secret!”

“You should have told us sooner. You must have had a hard time these past few months at school, trying to keep people from finding out. If you had told us earlier, we could have helped cover for you.”

She cursed a few more times, wanting to jump up and spin around on the spot, but finally pressed her hands onto the table, forcing herself to calm down.

“I remember when I asked you to help me set up my stall a while ago, and you were moving so slowly. I regret it now, making a pregnant woman… a pregnant man do work for me!”

Lu Shangyan was also stunned. Xia Li usually seemed lively and well-behaved, but now she was like a completely different person.

Xia Li chugged two glasses of cold water and let out a heavy sigh. “Lu Shangyan, you are seriously amazing!”

Jian Guo crumpled the damp tissue into a ball and threw it at her. “Can you keep it down? Don’t let people outside hear!”

Xia Li quickly covered her mouth and whispered, “Right, right, I got too excited.”

Afterward, she gave Lu Shangyan two thumbs up. “Amazing, amazing, amazing.”

    Amazing x N.

Lu Shangyan felt a little embarrassed. He gave a few helpless laughs and started looking around aimlessly.

Jian Guo finally calmed down. “Don’t worry, we will definitely keep this a secret for you.”

Lu Shangyan finally found a chance to talk business. “I could only tell the two of you first because Tun Tun is going to be born soon. Exams are next week, and the doctor also said that unexpected situations could easily arise.”

“I’m afraid that if something happens… I won’t be able to handle it myself at school. So, I hope you can help me.”

Xia Li immediately said, “What is there to say?! Help! Of course, we’ll help!”

Jian Guo pouted, looking like he might cry again. “Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of you and the little guy.”

Xia Li rolled up her sleeves. “Um, there’s something I don’t know if I should ask.”

Lu Shangyan looked at her questioningly, signaling her to continue. Xia Li reached out across the table. “Can I touch him?”

This time, before Lu Shangyan could speak, Pei Yumin quickly refused. “No.”

Xia Li awkwardly retracted her hand. “Fine, if I can’t touch him, I can’t touch him.”

She knew she would have plenty of opportunities to sneak a touch when Pei Yumin wasn’t around.

Jian Guo had also wanted to touch, but when he saw Lu Shangyan relax the hand he had placed on his belly after Pei Yumin refused, he knew it wasn’t going to happen.

However, he was too curious about the child and couldn’t help but ask, “His nickname is Tun Tun?”

Lu Shangyan nodded. Pei Yumin also gradually relaxed. “Shangyan gave me the chance to choose the nickname. How is it? Does it sound good?”

Pei Yumin had been anxious for a while, but now his shoulders were less tense than before, and he finally looked a little more relaxed.

Lu Shangyan knew that this “confession” had not been a waste of effort.

Jian Guo still looked at him with disdain. “It doesn’t sound good.” Then he looked at Lu Shangyan, but after less than a second, his gaze began to drift downward again. Ever since he learned that Lu Shangyan had a baby in his belly, he couldn’t help but want to look at it.

“If Lu Shangyan chose it himself, it would definitely sound better.”

Pei Yumin didn’t argue about this. “Of course. That’s why I’m looking forward to Tun Tun’s official name.”

Jian Guo glanced at him sideways. “Tun Tun will take the Lu surname, right?”

Lu Shangyan had been considering this. Originally, he was quite certain that Tun Tun should take his surname, but ever since he realized that if Tun Tun took the Pei surname, his future path might be much smoother, he started to hesitate.

After weighing the options, he was still afraid that Tun Tun would be bullied in the future, so he was trying to choose the best path for him.

But Pei Yumin was firm on this matter. “Of course. He’ll be Lu Tun Tun. Shangyan risked his life to bring him into the world, so he must take his surname.”

Jian Guo’s gaze toward him became a little more satisfied. “That’s more like it.”

“But don’t think that just because Tun Tun is surnamed Lu, you can shirk your responsibility as the other father. You need to let everyone know that Tun Tun is also your precious darling, and you must protect him well.”

Pei Yumin readily agreed. “Naturally. Although I can’t currently admit to the media that I am Tun Tun’s other biological father, I can announce that Tun Tun is the next generation of the Pei family.”

Jian Guo was stunned, then gradually understood what he meant. “Your family does have an ‘imperial throne’ to inherit. If you dare announce he’s the next generation of your family, it’s equivalent to acknowledging him as the Pei family heir. Tun Tun will have a big tree to lean on in the future.”

A smile finally appeared on his face after he finished speaking. “I like you a lot more now. I hope you and Lu Shangyan can stay well together.”

Lu Shangyan hadn’t expected Pei Yumin to do this. He clearly remembered what Yuan Qingwan had said when she visited their home last time.

Since Yuan Qingwan saw that Pei Yumin’s marriage partner was a man and realized they wouldn’t have children, even someone who looked down on Yuan Qingyu had come to their house to try and push a child onto Pei Yumin.

Not to mention other relatives. It was likely that many people had already probed or outright suggested things without his knowledge.

If Pei Yumin really went ahead and acknowledged Tun Tun, the pressure he would face would be immense, especially since he had already suffered a lot from his relatives over the years.

After seeing Xia Li and Jian Guo off, Lu Shangyan finally had a chance to ask him, “Will your relatives agree to you doing this?”

Pei Yumin looked very confused. “Why wouldn’t they agree?” Seeing Lu Shangyan’s worried expression, he finally realized that he hadn’t clearly explained to Lu Shangyan that, apart from Yuan Qingwan, all his elders actually doted on him!

Pei Yumin took a deep breath and slowly said, “Anyway, I’m an adult now. They can’t control what I do. As long as Mom and Dad support me, their opinions don’t matter at all.”

Lu Shangyan was still worried. “Really?”

“But didn’t you say they would try every means to deal with you? What if they don’t accept Tun Tun in the future and try to deal with him too?”

Pei Yumin quickly said, “They won’t. The me now is completely different from the me before. They rely on our family to live, so they wouldn’t dare cause trouble and make me angry.”

Lu Shangyan didn’t understand the complexities of wealthy family feuds. He only knew that in the small county of Chongxian, he couldn’t even handle family matters over a hundred thousand yuan.

If a conflict broke out now, it could truly be a bloodbath.

He sighed and finally settled the matter of Tun Tun’s surname again. “Let Tun Tun take my surname, Lu. That way, if something unpredictable happens in the future, there might be room for compromise.”

Pei Yumin paused while driving. He was starting to regret randomly setting up a persona for himself in front of Lu Shangyan.

And now he had a new goal: he had to find a way to make Lu Shangyan understand that his elders and siblings would no longer cause trouble.

They had “changed” now and were a loving, harmonious family.

Pei Yumin thought about it and decided to tell Lu Shangyan slowly after Tun Tun was born, lest Lu Shangyan get too emotional and give birth to Tun Tun right then and there.

On the day of the exam, heavy snow began to fall again.

The journey from home to school was nearly half an hour longer than before. Fortunately, Lu Shangyan’s classes were usually scheduled in the afternoon, so it didn’t affect him too much.

However, during the exam week, he had to wake up very early every day and stay up late to study, making him look much more tired than usual.

To let him sleep longer, Pei Yumin woke up early every day to help him get dressed. While Lu Shangyan was still groggy, he quickly carried him into the car so he could sleep a little longer on the way.

At first, Lu Shangyan refused because he wouldn’t have a chance to wash up.

Pei Yumin immediately offered to drive him in an RV so Lu Shangyan could lie down and sleep more comfortably on the road, but Lu Shangyan felt that was too ostentatious, and driving an RV directly into the campus would be too strange.

So, Pei Yumin started filling a thermos with warm water, placing a small basin in the car, and preparing a set of toiletries. He would wake Lu Shangyan up when they were close to school, and Lu Shangyan would wash up in the car.

Lu Shangyan only struggled for one day before being won over by Pei Yumin’s thoughtful service.

From the start of his exams until the end, Pei Yumin waited outside the academic building every time he dropped him off, afraid that if an emergency occurred, he wouldn’t be able to reach Lu Shangyan immediately. He didn’t want Lu Shangyan to be scared for too long.

If circumstances allowed, he truly wanted to sit beside Lu Shangyan and take the exams with him.

Jian Guo waited for Lu Shangyan after every exam. Lu Shangyan’s legs and feet were swollen now, making walking extremely inconvenient. Jian Guo was known to be “affectionate” by everyone; he liked to lean on people, whether male or female.

Now, he stuck to Lu Shangyan every day, holding his arm and letting Lu Shangyan lean his weight onto him. The school didn’t have an elevator, and climbing the stairs was especially difficult for Lu Shangyan.

During the first exam, the classroom was on the fifth floor. Halfway up, he was panting heavily, and his stomach was aching badly. He leaned against the wall at the stair landing to recover for a long time.

He started regretting again… Ever since his pregnancy advanced, he often regretted things over small matters.

This time, he regretted being so stubborn about taking the exams. If he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have had to walk in such an awkward posture and feel anxious throughout the entire test.

He also wouldn’t have to trouble Xia Li and Jian Guo to constantly look after him, or make Pei Yumin wait outside, even in the snow.

But regret was useless. His emotions had become very sensitive, but he shouldn’t cry right now. He just waited until no one was around, then slowly supported himself up with Jian Guo or Pei Yumin.

Fortunately, the exam period wasn’t too long. After Lu Shangyan submitted his paper for the last exam, he felt completely relieved. The things he had worried about hadn’t happened.

The moment Pei Yumin saw him come out safely, his lips trembled. Perhaps Lu Shangyan’s sensitive emotions had transferred to him, as he also inexplicably felt like crying.

That night, Pei Yumin packed their bags, not daring to delay for a moment, intending to take Lu Shangyan to stay at the hospital immediately.

But Lu Shangyan said, “I don’t want to go to the hospital.” He patted Tun Tun. “There hasn’t been any movement yet. It will probably be a while.”

“Didn’t Uncle Wu also say it won’t be until after the New Year in February? That’s still half a month away.”

“That won’t do.” Pei Yumin refused very decisively. “You promised me you’d go to the hospital after the exams. You can’t go back on your word.”

Lu Shangyan popped a grape into his mouth, slowly chewing it before saying with less conviction, “But I don’t really like hospitals. I get nervous when I go there.”

Pei Yumin squatted down and looked at him. “But if you’re at home, the doctor can’t get to you within a minute.”

Lu Shangyan said, “This is the first New Year we’re spending together. I don’t want to spend it in the hospital.”

Since his parents passed away, he hadn’t celebrated the New Year. This was the first time in years he would have family to celebrate with.

Pei Yumin was extremely persistent on this matter. “Then I’ll have Mom and Dad stay at the hospital too. Most of the VIP rooms are empty anyway. I’ll negotiate with the hospital.”

This scared Lu Shangyan, who quickly grabbed his hand. “Forget it, let’s just keep it to the two of us.”

Pei Yumin was finally satisfied. “I’ll take a bath with you later, and then we’ll go to the hospital first thing tomorrow morning to complete the procedures.”

Lu Shangyan had no choice but to agree.

After Pei Yumin left, he started chatting in their small group.

[S: When are you guys planning to go home?]

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: I’m already home. What’s up?]

[Sugar-Coated Chestnut (Future Godmother Edition): Don’t ask what you shouldn’t ask.]

[Sugar-Coated Chestnut (Future Godmother Edition): I still have some things at school. I’ll be back in about five days. Is there anything you need me to help you with? @S]

[Jian Fugui (Future Godfather Edition): My train ticket is for the day after tomorrow. I’m free, so do you want me to come keep you company and help you pass the time? @S]

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: What are you guys talking about so mysteriously?]

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: Also, what’s with your usernames? What’s with the Godfather and Godmother stuff? Couple usernames?]

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: Wait, Jian Guo, aren’t you purely gay? What, you turned straight like me after a few days?]

[Jian Fugui (Future Godfather Edition): I said stop asking! Stop asking!]

[Jian Fugui (Future Godfather Edition): Some things you shouldn’t know, so don’t ask!]

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: I feel like you guys are isolating me, but I can’t find the evidence.]

[Sugar-Coated Chestnut (Future Godmother Edition): Isn’t the evidence obvious? Stop pretending you can’t see it!]

Lu Shangyan couldn’t hold back anymore and slowly typed.

[S: I’ll send you the location tomorrow. If you’re free, you can come see me, because I’m going to be very bored for a long time.]

He could already imagine Pei Yumin’s attitude once they entered the hospital. He would definitely forbid him from leaving the hospital gates!

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: Are you guys really isolating me? If you keep this up, I’m leaving the group!]

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: So, before I leave the group, you better tell me everything! This is your last chance!]

[Jian Fugui (Future Godfather Edition): Hurry up and leave! I told you long ago you shouldn’t be in this group!]

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: Who are you insulting?!]

[S: Stop arguing. I’m pregnant, and I’m being forced to check into the hospital tomorrow. I’ll be bored alone in the hospital, so I want people to come keep me company.]

[Little Fu is not Little Jian: You don’t have to make up stuff like that if you don’t want to tell me! Who would believe that?!]

[Jian Fugui (Future Godfather Edition): We told you, and you still don’t believe it. Fine, don’t believe it! Leave the group!]

Lu Shangyan was exasperated. He knew Jian Guo and Zhao Jian liked to bicker in the group, and sometimes they even seemed to dislike each other in person. Although they constantly complained about each other, they never truly fought.

After watching for a while, he noticed his bowl of grapes was empty, so he quickly left a message:

[S: It’s true. If you don’t believe me, come to the hospital tomorrow and see for yourself.]

After that, he secretly scurried to the kitchen, planning to grab another bunch of grapes.

But just as he opened the refrigerator and before his hand could reach the grapes, Pei Yumin rushed down from upstairs. “No eating!”

He hadn’t made a sound, so Lu Shangyan didn’t know how Pei Yumin had found out.

He watched Pei Yumin stand in front of him and close the refrigerator. He couldn’t help but ask, “Did you install surveillance cameras everywhere in this house? How else do you know everything I do the moment I do it?”

A flicker of unnaturalness crossed Pei Yumin’s eyes, but since his back was to Lu Shangyan, Lu Shangyan didn’t notice.

When he turned around, he had already composed his expression. “No, how could I do something like that?”

“It’s because I love you too much, so we have a telepathic connection.”

Lu Shangyan looked confused. “Is that so? Then why don’t I have it?”

Pei Yumin didn’t know how to answer this time, but fortunately, his phone rang immediately. It was Tang Suichen.

He didn’t want to answer, but afraid Lu Shangyan would press him for an explanation, he picked up.

As soon as he connected, he heard Tang Suichen wail, “Lu Shangyan is pregnant?! A man, pregnant?!”

    Note
