Chapter 58: Chapter Fifty-Eight: Tun Tun, Come Out Quickly

Yuan Qingwan’s expression shifted, but she quickly regained her composure.

She didn’t want to show even a hint of weakness in front of these people. “Xiao Pei, you should worry more about yourself when you have time. Your aunt’s family is happy and harmonious, and we are living very well. We don’t need your concern.”

Pei Yumin let out a sneer. “Alright, it seems I was overly concerned.”

“However, since Aunt says so, she must have a foolproof and stable solution.”

The implication was that if she came to him for help in the future, he wouldn’t offer any.

Yuan Qingwan gripped the strap of her handbag, snorted, and walked away. If she had known she wouldn’t gain anything today, she absolutely wouldn’t have stepped foot inside this house!

But as she walked out the main gate, panic began to set in. She hadn’t completed the task her husband assigned her: to place one of their grandchildren into the Pei family.

She stood there, stomping her feet several times in frustration, then turned back and glared fiercely at the house.

Pei Yumin placed the storybooks on the table and picked up the top one, The Little Hamster’s Winter Food Storage. He showed it to Lu Shangyan. “How about I read this one to Tun Tun tonight?”

“I glanced at it when I bought the books. The little hamster inside is so cute. Tun Tun will definitely love it.”

Lu Shangyan secretly glanced at Yuan Qingyu and quickly said, “Take these upstairs first. You can choose later tonight.”

Pei Yumin was unconcerned. “You weren’t shy about defending me and speaking up for me just now, so why are you shy now?”

Lu Shangyan curled his fingers. So Pei Yumin had heard everything! He forced himself to say, “I’m not shy.”

Pei Yumin shrugged and, right in front of Yuan Qingyu, lay down on Lu Shangyan’s lap. “Then I’ll read it to the baby right now.”

Lu Shangyan looked at Yuan Qingyu again. He had just said he wasn’t shy, and if he pushed Pei Yumin away now, his lie would be exposed. So he could only grit his teeth, resting his arms on either side of his body, letting Pei Yumin rub against his legs.

Yuan Qingyu chuckled a few times, then went upstairs to change clothes and grab her bag. “I’m going to check on the dojo. I’ll be back soon.” She didn’t want to stay here and be a third wheel.

After she left, Pei Yumin became even more reckless. Taking Lu Shangyan by surprise, he turned his head and buried his face directly into Lu Shangyan’s lower abdomen.

Fortunately, Lu Shangyan’s belly was already protruding, which somewhat blocked Pei Yumin’s face. Otherwise, Pei Yumin’s face would have been buried right there!

Pei Yumin mischievously kept talking, his warm breath spraying out. Especially when he would occasionally snicker, Lu Shangyan realized he was doing it on purpose!

No longer trusting him, he slapped Pei Yumin’s forehead. “That’s enough.”

Pei Yumin sat up. He was also afraid that lying down for too long would make Lu Shangyan’s legs numb. Now, if Lu Shangyan walked a few extra steps during the day, his waist and legs would ache terribly at night.

He kept bringing up the issue. “Tomorrow, I’m going to the hospital to find someone to teach me massage techniques. Your legs are already starting to swell. It will definitely get more uncomfortable later.”

He never tried to comfort Lu Shangyan by saying that pregnancy and childbirth weren’t scary. He always spoke plainly: if it hurt, it hurt; if it was uncomfortable, it was uncomfortable.

He wanted Lu Shangyan to subconsciously know that his current pain and discomfort were normal, lest Lu Shangyan keep enduring it and refuse to tell him until he couldn’t bear it anymore.

However, judging by the current situation, Lu Shangyan’s behavior had greatly improved. He now dared to make requests and even express his feelings in front of outsiders.

It was a huge leap in their relationship!

Pei Yumin didn’t dare to show his happiness too obviously, as he needed to keep up the effort. “I’ll go learn some massage techniques and help you massage several times a day to relieve the pain. Whether it helps or not, you have to let me do something for you. Otherwise, seeing you work so hard makes me feel bad.”

Lu Shangyan narrowed his eyes, curled his finger, and hooked Pei Yumin’s chin. “I want to eat the spicy hot pot near the school right now. Can you satisfy this small request of mine?”

This was no longer a small request. If it weren’t for Tun Tun, Pei Yumin could take him anytime, but now… for health and nutritional balance, there were too many things to consider regarding food.

Lu Shangyan sighed, mimicking Pei Yumin’s usual mannerisms. “Oh well, forget it if you can’t.”

Seeing his disappointed look, Pei Yumin immediately stood up. “We can go, but you have to promise to only eat a very, very small amount, just enough to taste it.”

“Tun Tun will be born soon. You can eat as much as you want then. Since you won’t be breastfeeding, you won’t need to restrict your diet.”

Lu Shangyan made a dissatisfied “tsk.” “I was just about to put on a jacket to go eat the spicy hot pot, and you suddenly mentioned breast… that. Now I don’t even feel like going anymore.”

    Pei Yumin glanced at him.

    That would be even better!

But he dared not actually say it, instead putting on a strong performance. “Are you really not going? If we don’t go now, once Mom gets back, we really won’t be able to.”

Lu Shangyan was silent for a moment, then stood up anyway.

Once in the car, he was inexplicably in a good mood, stealing glances at Pei Yumin many times along the way. This made Pei Yumin overjoyed, wishing he could pull over right then and there and give him a big kiss!

But he wasn’t sure if doing so would upset Lu Shangyan, so he had to restrain himself.

When getting out of the car, Lu Shangyan opened the door, suddenly turned back, and quickly said, “Pei Yumin, you are really good to me.”

After saying that, he immediately got out of the car and hurried into the shop.

Pei Yumin was still savoring the sweet moment. Lu Shangyan’s emotions were truly unpredictable now, almost unlike the Lu Shangyan he knew.

Sometimes he couldn’t even tell if Lu Shangyan was acting this way due to the hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy, or if he genuinely liked him so much that he dared to express his feelings.

Although this declaration was only a declaration as far as he was concerned, it was still something Lu Shangyan had never said before.

When Lu Shangyan used to eat spicy hot pot, he needed at least fifty yuan worth of food to feel full. But it was different now. With Pei Yumin watching over him, he spent a long time choosing, and when it was weighed, it came to nine yuan and seventy-two cents—less than ten yuan.

Pei Yumin saw him standing there, momentarily frozen like a statue, so he stepped forward and added a fried egg for him. “Alright, eat this much for now.”

After they sat down, he reminded Lu Shangyan, “After we finish eating, I’ll take you for a walk outside to air out and digest the food. Otherwise, if you don’t eat much dinner at home, Mom will worry again.”

Lu Shangyan nodded, pulled out a tissue, and wiped the grease off the table in front of him. “Aren’t you eating?”

Pei Yumin shook his head. “I’m here to serve you.”

Then, he quietly asked Lu Shangyan, “When Aunt came to see my mom just now, the things you said weren’t like something you would usually say. Was it because of me? Or because you completely cut off my family? Is that why this change happened?”

Lu Shangyan felt there was nothing to hide and answered directly, “It’s because Mom is very good to me. I can’t stand by and watch her be bullied.”

“Actually, I didn’t know how to handle that situation. I thought a lot while standing in the entryway, constantly wondering how you would handle it if you were me. I figured you would probably say something like that.”

“Because that’s how you are. You always say a bunch of random nonsense, completely ignoring what the other person says, and end up infuriating them.”

Pei Yumin looked into his eyes, feeling bubbles gurgling in his heart—bubbles of happiness.

He couldn’t resist and hugged Lu Shangyan. “Shang Shang, how can you be so cute? You’re even imitating your husband’s every move and trying to talk like your husband.”

Lu Shangyan’s expression changed, and Pei Yumin immediately let go, only raising his arm to prop up his chin, continuing to look at Lu Shangyan with a happy expression.

Lu Shangyan felt uncomfortable under his gaze. When the spicy hot pot was served, he found it hard to swallow for a moment. Fortunately, he hadn’t ordered much, and he finished quickly.

Pei Yumin followed behind him. “We still have time. Do you want to go shopping at the mall? There’s one nearby.”

“Tun Tun is going to be born soon, and you haven’t bought her little clothes and shoes yet. Although our mom has prepared quite a bit, those are still different from what we buy.”

“After all, we are Tun Tun’s fathers. The clothes we buy for her have a different meaning.”

Lu Shangyan had been busy studying recently, occasionally running to his part-time job. With winter setting in, he had become incredibly lazy, sometimes only wanting to rest at home when tired. He hadn’t prepared many things for Tun Tun’s birth yet. Now that he had eaten something and felt warm, he agreed to Pei Yumin’s suggestion.

The maternity and baby section was on the fourth floor. Most people there were couples or two close girlfriends. It was rare to see two grown men shopping in the baby section together.

When the saleslady approached, she didn’t know how to start the conversation for a moment.

Lu Shangyan didn’t want anyone following them, and Pei Yumin, like a mind-reader, immediately declined the saleslady. “We can look around ourselves.”

The saleslady soon returned to her post to assist other customers.

Lu Shangyan wandered aimlessly through the store and finally spotted a pale yellow onesie. He held it in his hand; it was tiny.

Lu Shangyan could only hold the garment with two fingers, afraid to use too much force, worried that the small outfit might tear.

Pei Yumin was much more professional. He picked it up, checked the quality, the material, and even examined every loose thread.

Finally, he said, “This is very cute. We can buy it.”

Pei Yumin looked up and saw a small bib on the shelf, also pale yellow, with a little hamster in the center. “Let’s buy this too. It’s adorable.”

Lu Shangyan was so impressed by his familiarity that he didn’t know what to say, only nodding woodenly.

Pei Yumin saw the confusion in his eyes and smiled proudly, explaining, “Sometimes when you’re in class, and I’m not busy with work, I come shopping with our mom. She taught me all this.”

Lu Shangyan looked at him. “You’ve worked hard and put in so much effort.”

“How is this effort?” Pei Yumin placed his hand on Lu Shangyan’s lower back, massaging him intermittently. “At most, I’m just the driver who brought you here to buy things. I took the opportunity to secretly learn a few things so I could show off a little today.”

Lu Shangyan said, “I think you’ve put in more effort than me in preparing everything for Tun Tun’s birth.”

Pei Yumin sighed. “This is what I should do. Besides, he hasn’t even been born yet. How do you know that your effort won’t be more than mine? Don’t just look at the present; look to the future.”

Lu Shangyan paid and waited for the items to be packaged. Hearing Pei Yumin’s words, the previous atmosphere vanished. “Why are you turning into a motivational coach again?”

Pei Yumin said, “I’m telling the truth. We are married, and we have a lifetime to ‘compare’ like this. There are too many uncertainties.”

As he spoke, the smile on his face deepened. “Just thinking about us having to support each other when we’re old makes me very happy and content.”

Lu Shangyan pursed his lips, carrying Tun Tun’s little clothes as he headed downstairs. He had wanted to browse more, but the constant scrutiny from those around them made him uncomfortable, so he hurried away after only buying one outfit.

It was fine; they could come back more often when there were fewer people. As Pei Yumin said, they had a lifetime, so there was no rush.

In January, Tun Tun was over eight months old. Pei Yumin lived in constant fear, checking on Lu Shangyan the moment he woke up.

Sometimes he would wake up several times in the middle of the night, terrified that Lu Shangyan might have a medical issue that he wouldn’t notice in time.

Lu Shangyan told him every night that his body was fine and he wasn’t uncomfortable, but Pei Yumin couldn’t stop worrying.

Lu Shangyan could no longer sleep wrapped in his arms as before; his waist would ache terribly if he stayed in one position for too long at night. To soothe Pei Yumin, he had to hold his hand every night.

But this meant that the moment Lu Shangyan moved, Pei Yumin would wake up. Yet, if they didn’t hold hands, Pei Yumin couldn’t sleep at all.

Lu Shangyan drank his milk and told him once again, “Uncle Wu said that Tun Tun is very healthy right now, and so am I. You don’t need to worry at all.”

Pei Yumin hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in a long time. The dark circles under his eyes and the bloodshot veins were severe.

He crouched in front of Lu Shangyan. Before, he had to touch Tun Tun every day and talk to him for a long time, but now, he didn’t even dare to touch Tun Tun easily.

“Uncle Wu also said that because you are male, the unknown variables increase in the eighth month. The baby might be born prematurely, and the risk to the mother’s body will also increase.”

“I’m really scared. I know you will be safe, but I just…”

He still couldn’t bring himself to say that he regretted letting Lu Shangyan keep the child. This was Lu Shangyan’s choice, and he respected it completely from beginning to end.

As for his current fear, that was his own issue. He didn’t want Lu Shangyan to worry too. Halfway through his sentence, he couldn’t help but stand up and try to walk away.

The pressure Lu Shangyan was under might not be less than his, and he couldn’t bring any more negative emotions to him.

His eyes became moist. Lu Shangyan grabbed his wrist and shook it a few times. “I’m really fine.”

“Besides, I promised you a long time ago, didn’t I? I won’t hide my physical condition from you anymore. I will tell you immediately if I feel any discomfort.”

“I think Tun Tun is doing great right now. He shows no intention of meeting us yet. You can enjoy a few more weeks of peace, otherwise, once he’s born, you won’t be able to rest anymore.”

Pei Yumin quickly wiped away his tears. “I actually wish he would hurry up and come out now, so that…” He closed his mouth. He shouldn’t say that now! He wanted to slap himself twice. How could he say something so unlucky at a time like this!

Lu Shangyan leaned over and kissed the corner of his lips. “Alright, stop overthinking. I have exams next week. After the exams, I’ll stay home and won’t go anywhere.”

Pei Yumin nodded, then quickly denied it. “Let’s just stay at the hospital.”

He was afraid of sudden complications. Uncle Wu had told him about all the possibilities. He was terrified of premature birth, and then complications during surgery. If anything happened to Lu Shangyan, he couldn’t even bear to imagine it!

Lu Shangyan said, “Okay, I promise you.”

Seeing Pei Yumin so anxious, Lu Shangyan wondered if his decision not to take leave at this critical moment was right or wrong.

He had chosen to pursue graduate studies, and every exam result was extremely important. Although Pei Yumin had said that with his ability, he would definitely succeed, he still didn’t want any mistakes.

He had planned everything well before. After the exams, Tun Tun would still have two weeks before reaching nine months, so there was plenty of time. But after his most recent check-up, Lu Shangyan also started to have some regrets.

Especially after seeing Pei Yumin in this state.

He felt a sour, unpleasant feeling in his heart.

He also started to worry about what would happen if an emergency occurred during the exam.

On the last day of school for the final class, Lu Shangyan was bundled up like a ball. Jian Guo was startled when he saw him.

Xia Li was also busy studying recently and didn’t have time to join them for class and hang out.

Lu Shangyan arranged to meet them in the evening.

Xia Li’s hair was greasy from studying. When she saw his message about dinner, she initially thought she had misread it.

Lu Shangyan had never proactively suggested dinner before, and he said he had something important to tell her and Jian Guo. She immediately became nervous, fearing it was bad news.

Jian Guo couldn’t hold back at all and leaned over to ask him, “Did Pei Yumin make you angry? You’re suddenly so serious. Is there a problem with your marriage?”

Lu Shangyan placed his hand, wearing his wedding ring, on the table. “It’s not about that. I’ll tell you both when Xia Li arrives.”

Jian Guo sat back down, but after a few seconds, he leaned over again. “You didn’t mention it in the group chat. Do you not want Zhao Jian to know about this?”

Letting Zhao Jian know meant letting Tang Suichen know. He didn’t know what had happened between Zhao Jian and Tang Suichen in the past few months, but now the two were as close as brothers.

Lu Shangyan didn’t want Tang Suichen to know yet. Besides, even if he did want him to know, he felt that Pei Yumin should be the one to tell him.

He nodded. “I don’t want him to know for now.”

Jian Guo automatically ignored the word “for now,” looking up at the ceiling. He had finally surpassed Zhao Jian today!

He was so anxious he wished it was six o’clock right now.

It got dark very quickly now. By six o’clock, the sky was already dim. Lu Shangyan said he wouldn’t be home for dinner tonight, and Pei Yumin was the first to object vehemently.

Lu Shangyan tried to soothe him for a long time but failed. Besides, he couldn’t keep checking his phone during class, so he eventually stopped replying to his messages.

Unexpectedly, Pei Yumin followed him directly to the school gate. His anxiety was getting worse and worse. Lu Shangyan couldn’t bear to say anything harsh to him, nor did he want to criticize his actions.

Pei Yumin scrutinized him up and down several times before finally relaxing slightly. “You suddenly stopped replying to my messages. I was worried.”

Lu Shangyan handed him his backpack. “I was in class.”

Pei Yumin acknowledged this, not saying anything more, afraid his voice would tremble too much.

Jian Guo put his backpack back in his dorm room, quickly fixed his hair, and came out to see Lu Shangyan and Pei Yumin standing side by side. Lu Shangyan’s arm was leaning against Pei Yumin’s arm—a very normal posture, but Jian Guo felt that Pei Yumin was exerting effort to support Lu Shangyan.

Lu Shangyan got tired after walking just a few steps recently. Looking at Pei Yumin’s near-breakdown state… and what Lu Shangyan had said not long ago about a growth in his stomach, which was supposedly benign, but had been dragging on for so long…

When Jian Guo walked over, his mind was a blank, chaotic mess.

Xia Li was completely unaware of anything until halfway through the meal, when Jian Guo couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst into tears. “Lu Shangyan, is your illness really incurable? Isn’t President Pei very capable? Why doesn’t he find professional doctors, search the whole country, the whole world! It’s just a small tumor, what’s so hard to cure!”

Xia Li’s chopsticks dropped onto the table, and she finally realized what was happening. “Are you saying this dinner might be a farewell meal?!”

Lu Shangyan didn’t understand how things had escalated like this. He quickly pulled out tissues for both of them, explaining in a panic, “It’s not what you think. I’m very healthy right now. I didn’t ask you here because my illness is incurable, but because I need your help with something.”

Jian Guo sniffled, finally managing to stop crying after a long while.

Pei Yumin knew what he wanted to say and asked him, unusually serious, “Lu Shangyan, are you really sure you want to tell them? The secret about this matter won’t be kept, and it will greatly affect you.”

Lu Shangyan took a deep breath, as if having made a certain decision. He said, “Actually, I’ve been considering this for a while. They will have to know after Tun Tun is born. I can’t cut off contact with them forever, can I? Besides, I trust my friends.”

Lu Shangyan gripped Pei Yumin’s hand under the table. Although he said this, his fingers were still trembling with nervousness.

Jian Guo was utterly confused listening to them. “What Tun Tun? What birth? What cutting off contact forever?”

Xia Li’s voice also rose. “Lu Shangyan, what do you mean by this?”

Lu Shangyan slowly pulled open his thick down jacket, looking down at his bulging abdomen. “I’m not sick.”

He gathered all his courage and looked up at the two people in front of him. “I’m pregnant.”

    Note
