Chapter 56: Don’t Be Afraid, Just Leave Everything to Me…

After hearing what he said, Pei Yumin immediately replied without any hesitation: “I’ll go out and cut it right now, okay?”

Lu Shangyan nodded, watching him stand up to change clothes, and immediately followed him.

Pei Yumin said: “I’ll take you with me, don’t panic.”

In this situation, he didn’t dare leave Lu Shangyan alone at home.

Lu Shangyan looked at his face, suddenly blinked several times as if snapping back to reality, rubbed his sore eyes, and said: “No need.”

Hearing this, Pei Yumin sped up his movements: “We must go. It’s fine, it’s just hair. If you want to see me without hair, I’ll go get a haircut.”

Lu Shangyan shook his head and snatched the jacket from his hand: “I’m fine now, really.”

He pointed to his head: “I don’t know what came over me just now, I kept saying all sorts of nonsense. I’m really fine now.”

Pei Yumin met his gaze, seeing his eyes clear and bright, devoid of the confusion and sadness from moments ago. He finally let out a sigh of relief.

But he still didn’t dare to relax: “Then is there anything else you want me to do?”

Lu Shangyan shook his head: “I’m acting so strange, am I sick?”

“You’re not sick.” Pei Yumin pulled him into a tight embrace, wrapping his arms around him: “Did you forget? You have a mischievous little sprout causing trouble in your belly.”

“Didn’t you complain about backaches and sore legs a few days ago? That was him playing tricks. It must be because of him now too.”

Lu Shangyan swayed slowly with his movements, feeling as if he were lying in a cradle: “He hasn’t even been born yet, and he’s already taking the blame for so much.”

Pei Yumin said: “I’m telling the truth. If you don’t believe me, we can call Uncle Wu right now and ask.”

“It’s already tiring and difficult for women to carry a child, let alone your body which isn’t ideally suited for pregnancy. Your hormone levels will be even more chaotic, so the situation just now is actually very normal.”

Lu Shangyan buried his face in his neck and took a deep breath: “When I was little, many people said I had a mother who gave birth to me but no mother to raise me. Sometimes when I went to collect bottles to sell for money, people would deliberately make things difficult for me and shortchange me.”

“At first, I didn’t dare to fight back, but later, more and more people tried to steal my things, so I had to use my own methods to get them back. Many people said I was crazy, that I got rabies after being bitten by a stray dog in the village when my aunt locked me outside.”

“That was many years ago. I can’t remember if I was actually bitten by a dog. I was scared, and I worried that I really was like they said—that because my childhood was so difficult, my heart started to become twisted.”

Pei Yumin’s eyes felt hot listening to this: “It’s okay, you’re not sick. We went to the hospital for checkups several times before, remember? Every time, the doctor said you were very healthy.”

“Think about it, at first the doctor said you were malnourished, but when we went for the follow-up checkup last time, that condition had already improved, and the baby is developing very well.”

“So you truly don’t have any problems. The ones who did wrong weren’t you, but those people. They lied and made you unhappy. I think they are the ones with sick minds.”

Lu Shangyan didn’t understand why Pei Yumin smelled so good and always made him feel safe, even though they used the same shower gel and washed their clothes with the same detergent.

He took several more deep breaths: “Actually, that incident was a long time ago. After I received the compensation from my uncle and aunt, I decided I had to forget all the bad things that happened before. I haven’t thought about it in a long time. I don’t know why my mind was suddenly filled with all that upsetting stuff just now.”

Pei Yumin knew in his heart that these events had left too much psychological damage on Lu Shangyan. Even if the root was pulled out, even if time could heal the wound, scars would remain.

He couldn’t let Lu Shangyan stay home alone anymore: “Let’s move back tomorrow. My mom has been telling me for days that she wants to set up a nursery room at home. If you don’t go back, she’ll buy a bunch of random things, and they might not be to your liking. It’ll be perfect if you go back to supervise.”

“It’s almost the end of the year, and I’m busy with company matters, so I probably won’t have time to buy baby supplies. You’ll have to worry about that.” After saying this, he quickly added, afraid Lu Shangyan would wander off alone: “But you can’t get too tired, or your legs might swell up at night and keep you from sleeping well. If there’s anything you want to buy and I’m busy, just let my mom go with you. You must have someone accompany you.”

That last sentence was the main point, and Lu Shangyan understood his meaning somewhat.

Pei Yumin was being tactful, and Lu Shangyan knew he was doing it for his own good: “But if we move back tomorrow, won’t Auntie think it’s too sudden?”

Pei Yumin only dared to slowly release him when his voice had stabilized. Lu Shangyan’s emotions flared up suddenly today, and thankfully, he happened to be home. What if he had to work late one day and Lu Shangyan was alone?

So, this time, even if he had to use coercion, temptation, or every trick in the book to coax him, he had to bring Lu Shangyan home and have his mother personally look after him.

Pei Yumin kept his voice very soft: “No, you haven’t forgotten, have you? We’re already married. You can’t call her Auntie anymore; you should call her Mom.”

“Since she’s your mother, you can ask her to do anything for you. Besides, she talks about you every day. She’s been wanting you to come home quickly since your body is currently inconvenienced.”

Lu Shangyan pointed to the anti-slip mats outside: “But we just laid these anti-slip mats down.”

Pei Yumin said: “I’ll pack them up tonight, and we’ll take them with us tomorrow morning. Then we’ll lay them all in our bathroom. How does that sound?”

Lu Shangyan no longer hesitated and slowly nodded.

Pei Yumin immediately called Yuan Qingyu, afraid Lu Shangyan would regret it if he waited even a moment longer.

Yuan Qingyu instantly jumped up from the sofa in excitement: “Don’t wait until tomorrow! It’s still early today. I’ll go pick him up right now.”

“I told you two to come back early! Shangyan’s situation is special; how can he manage without someone looking after him?”

Lu Shangyan blushed and said into the phone: “Auntie, I’m really fine. I just felt sad for a moment, but I’m better now.”

“I have a lot of classes during the day today, and Pei Yumin has to go to work, so we probably won’t have time to move. We’re both free tomorrow, so we can move everything at once.”

Yuan Qingyu thought for a moment, then said: “Then I still need to come over now. That way, when you get home, someone will be there, and you won’t feel too sad.”

Lu Shangyan was about to say not to bother, but then he heard Yuan Qingyu let out a long sigh, saying sadly: “Shangyan, do you think the red packet I gave you for changing the address was too small? How about Auntie takes you to buy some pretty stones later?”

She deliberately emphasized the word “Auntie.” How could Lu Shangyan not understand what she meant? He quickly said: “No, it was already a lot.”

Yuan Qingyu stopped talking, only sighing repeatedly on the other end of the phone. Lu Shangyan frantically signaled Pei Yumin with his eyes to speak up for him, but Pei Yumin just kept smiling at him, as if he hadn’t received the signal, and didn’t say a single word.

Lu Shangyan surrendered, hanging his head low, and softly called out: “Mom, I really didn’t think it was too little. I just haven’t gotten used to it yet.”

Yuan Qingyu let out a cheerful “Yoo-hoo!” and immediately jumped up from the sofa. Her joyful reaction was exactly like Pei Yumin’s.

Lu Shangyan’s face was bright red. Then he heard Yuan Qingyu say: “I’m going to buy some groceries now and then come find you. You finish school early, so come back for dinner. If I have time, I’ll help you pack your luggage first, so tomorrow isn’t too rushed and everyone gets exhausted.”

Pei Yumin agreed with Yuan Qingyu on this point: “Just let her come. Otherwise, she won’t sleep well tonight and will keep worrying about this.”

“She wants to help us work, why stop her? The more she does, the less you have to do. You absolutely cannot overexert yourself right now.”

Lu Shangyan still didn’t want to trouble Yuan Qingyu. In his view, Yuan Qingyu was an elder, and he should be filial to her.

So, when packing the luggage, he still did as much as he could, showing no intention of resting.

In the end, Yuan Qingyu had to pull him away and force him to sit on the sofa and chat with her before he finally settled down.

In fact, even with Yuan Qingyu there, they didn’t gain an extra laborer. Only Pei Yumin was busy moving things in and out. However, his earlier words were just for Lu Shangyan’s benefit. If he really let his mother move things, his father would be unhappy.

His father’s most famous quote was that his mother’s hands were not meant for doing housework at home, but for delivering a decisive blow to opponents on the competition stage.

Pei Yumin rolled up his sleeves and moved the last few boxes of luggage into the living room: “Alright, let’s hire someone to pack the rest.”

He had packed Lu Shangyan’s things himself, afraid that if he let the housekeepers do it, they might damage something and upset Lu Shangyan. He had also packed his own important documents. Only clothes were left, and it wouldn’t matter if those got damaged.

Lu Shangyan, however, was not satisfied. He looked at the full cabinets: “Why aren’t you packing these? We have to pack them ourselves.”

Pack them themselves… Pei Yumin still couldn’t escape it. He had suggested earlier that Yuan Qingyu bring a few housekeepers to help, but Lu Shangyan stood at the door and wouldn’t let them in, insisting on packing them himself.

Hearing Lu Shangyan say this again, Pei Yumin sighed and resignedly turned back.

Lu Shangyan also felt it was inappropriate to let him do all the work alone, so he followed him in to help fold clothes. This was light work and quick to do. Yuan Qingyu even praised him for how neatly he folded the clothes.

Pei Yumin wiped the sweat from his forehead, panting heavily: “Shangshang does everything beautifully.”

By the time they finished moving, it was completely dark.

Pei Yumin hadn’t realized that living in that small room for just a few months would accumulate so many things.

Lu Shangyan placed the toothbrushes and towels they brought from the rental apartment into the bathroom. Although these items were bought on sale and were cheap, they held significant meaning for him, carrying the memories of his journey with Pei Yumin. He couldn’t just throw them away.

Pei Yumin was still wearing the nine-yuan-ninety-cent slippers (two pairs for that price), which were too cold for this weather. Lu Shangyan looked at his exposed toes: “Are you tired now?”

Pei Yumin was lying on the bed, about to close his eyes and fall asleep, but hearing him speak instantly energized him: “I’m not tired at all!”

He remembered the agreement he and Lu Shangyan had made for tonight. He was burning up all over, just waiting for Lu Shangyan’s command so he could pounce on him and then… go straight in for a night of pleasure.

But unexpectedly, Lu Shangyan just opened the closet and handed him a scarf: “If you’re not tired, come with me to the supermarket now.”

Pei Yumin pulled open the bedside drawer and checked. There were indeed no condoms. Besides, he had never brought anyone home—no, he should say he had never been with anyone other than Lu Shangyan—so how could there be such things at home?

They had some at the rental apartment, but they were long gone, and since he and Lu Shangyan had never gone all the way, they hadn’t bought more.

But for tonight, for novices like them, it was better to be fully prepared.

He smiled and gently nudged Lu Shangyan’s shoulder: “Shangshang, I didn’t realize your studies were so effective; you’re even more thoughtful than I am.”

He was referring to the videos on Lu Shangyan’s phone, but Lu Shangyan kept looking at his toes: “This doesn’t require studying; it’s basic life knowledge.”

Pei Yumin smiled and agreed: “Yes, yes, yes. Let’s go now. The supermarket hasn’t closed yet.”

As soon as Lu Shangyan entered the supermarket, he headed straight for the daily necessities section. Pei Yumin stopped him: “They usually sell those things near the checkout counter.”

Lu Shangyan turned sideways and glanced: “No, they wouldn’t be able to display them there.”

Pei Yumin froze, and an unpleasant memory immediately surfaced. He suddenly recalled how he had misunderstood Lu Shangyan in Chong County and ran to an adult store to buy things, only to find out Lu Shangyan hadn’t meant that at all.

He watched Lu Shangyan rub his waist and slowly walk ahead of him, swallowing all the questions he wanted to ask, afraid that asking would make Lu Shangyan overthink and become unhappy.

Lu Shangyan picked out two pairs of cotton slippers, placing one in front of Pei Yumin and one in front of himself: “Compare them to see if they fit.”

The last time they bought slippers, Lu Shangyan could still bend down and compare them to the shoes Pei Yumin was wearing, but now, even that simple posture was very difficult for him.

After straightening up, Lu Shangyan took a heavy breath. He grabbed Pei Yumin’s arm, asking him to support some of his weight, and whispered: “This pair looks like my size, but I probably need to buy one size larger, because my legs and feet sometimes swell up.”

Pei Yumin said: “This pair fits me perfectly.”

So, he had only wanted to buy him a pair of cotton slippers because he was still wearing sandals. It was a good thing he hadn’t asked just now.

Lu Shangyan saw his low spirits: “Don’t you like the style?”

“But you always send me little shark emojis. I thought you liked sharks. This one even has shark teeth in the front and a shark tail in the back.”

Pei Yumin immediately smiled and said: “No, I love it! I just didn’t dare to get too excited because there are so many people here.”

Lu Shangyan told him to pick up the slippers and go to the checkout counter. When they passed the fruit section, he saw grapes: “I want to eat some.”

The supermarket didn’t have many items, and Pei Yumin was afraid the fruit wasn’t fresh, so he only bought a small amount for him.

Lu Shangyan, rarely craving something, reminded him: “I’ll finish these quickly.”

Pei Yumin said: “I’ll buy you good ones tomorrow. These don’t look very fresh, and they might upset your stomach if you eat them.”

Lu Shangyan, who had felt a slight pang of sourness rising to his nose, suppressed it instantly upon hearing this. He no longer felt wronged at all.

“Then buy a lot. I get hungry easily when I’m in class during the day. I got hungry halfway through class this morning. Drinking half a cup of water didn’t help at all.”

Pei Yumin frowned: “You should just ask for leave to go buy something to eat, or text me, and I can bring it to you.”

Lu Shangyan drew out his voice, a rare hint of a spoiled tone in his voice: “Young Master Pei, by the time you deliver it, I’ll have fainted from hunger!”

“So, starting next Monday, you need to prepare more food for me. If I have a full day of classes, I need to take it to school to eat.”

This sense of dependence was something Pei Yumin could never get enough of, especially now that Lu Shangyan was slowly starting to make more requests of him. This time, he smiled genuinely: “Alright, just tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll personally make it for you.”

“I’m telling you, my cooking is better than the cook at home. I guarantee that when you take it to school, Xia Li and Jian Guo will be drooling with envy.”

Lu Shangyan placed the items from the shopping cart onto the checkout counter. While waiting to pay, he saw various condoms on the shelf nearby.

Lu Shangyan recalled what Pei Yumin had said when they first entered the supermarket.

He pursed his lips and quickly grabbed two boxes from the shelf, placing them on the counter: “Please ring up these two as well.”

The cashier looked up at him, then looked down, felt something was off, and looked up at Pei Yumin again.

Pei Yumin, who hadn’t reacted yet, had his mouth stretched into a grin that almost reached his ears in the blink of an eye.

He looked at the two boxes of condoms. Good heavens, thankfully he looked! They weren’t his size!

He quickly took them back and selected two different boxes from the shelf. Lu Shangyan looked at him in confusion. Pei Yumin leaned close to his ear and whispered in a voice only they could hear: “Don’t you know your husband’s size? The ones you picked are too small. I need the largest size.”

Lu Shangyan actually recalled it. It was indeed plump…

Realizing what he was thinking, he buried half his face in his scarf and impatiently patted Pei Yumin’s back.

Pei Yumin was in high spirits and hummed a tune all the way back, his butt practically bouncing off the car seat with smugness.

Fortunately, the drive back wasn’t too long. Lu Shangyan sighed, wishing he hadn’t been so proactive just now.

Yet, he didn’t regret being proactive.

Passing the living room, Pei Yumin saw Yuan Qingyu slumped on the sofa, watching the news with Pei Yicheng. In reality, she was drowsy and looked like she was about to fall asleep.

He was too excited and needed to vent. Seeing his mother like this, he immediately rushed over: “Mom! Don’t sleep! Great news!”

Yuan Qingyu was startled awake and instantly sat up: “What? Shangyan gave birth? I’m going to be a grandma!”

“No.” Pei Yumin clicked his tongue, about to say something else, but Lu Shangyan, who had rushed over in time, covered his mouth.

Lu Shangyan whispered through gritted teeth, reminding him: “If you dare say anything, you’re finished.”

Then he smiled, looking embarrassed as he faced Yuan Qingyu: “Mom, it’s nothing. He just has intermittent fits of madness.”

He immediately pulled Pei Yumin upstairs.

Pei Yicheng’s mind was no longer on the news. He turned to look at Lu Shangyan, then at the smiling Yuan Qingyu: “Why did he only call you Mom and not me Dad? Is there something I’m not doing well enough? Or did you secretly do something behind my back again?”

“It shouldn’t be. I gave gifts when you did, and mine were even better than yours.”

Yuan Qingyu snorted and patted his chest: “Feel your heart and tell me, were your gifts really better than mine? Mine were gifts that touched his heart. What were yours? Hmph.”

Pei Yicheng’s chest hurt from her patting, but he thought it was his heart fluttering. His serious expression changed, and he immediately walked over, grinning: “Then tell me, what should I give him?”

Yuan Qingyu pulled out her phone and selected a bag worth nearly seven figures: “Buy me a bag, and I’ll tell you. This amount of money for a cute and reliable good son—that’s a good deal, isn’t it?”

Pei Yicheng: “…” Seeing Yuan Qingyu’s expectant look, he nodded and said: “It certainly is a windfall. So, I’ve decided to buy you two.”

Upstairs, Lu Shangyan was nervous, listening at the door, afraid Yuan Qingyu would guess what Pei Yumin had been about to say downstairs.

However, the soundproofing in the house was excellent. He listened for a long time but heard nothing.

Pei Yumin, on the other hand, quickly stripped off his clothes and stood naked in front of him, even turning his body to force him to look.

Lu Shangyan covered his eyes: “I’m going to get a sty.”

Pei Yumin triumphantly lifted his clothes, intending to take them off too: “You’ve seen it so many times, why are you shy?”

“I’m not shy at all. Come, let me say hello to Tun-Tun and kiss little Shangshang.”

Lu Shangyan looked down and saw that he was still wearing those cotton slippers. With that attire and that shameless posture, Lu Shangyan felt even more embarrassed to look at him.

But in that moment of distraction, Pei Yumin seized the opportunity. By the time he reacted, he was only wearing a pair of underwear, which was already pooled around his ankles.

Lu Shangyan wanted to cover himself, but for a moment, he didn’t know where to cover first. Pei Yumin laughed and carried him into the bathroom, setting him down on the anti-slip mat with the little shark and the little pufferfish.

He tried to say something, but his lips were sealed. After kissing for what felt like an eternity, just as he was about to pass out,

Pei Yumin’s husky voice sounded in his ear: “Don’t be afraid of anything. Just leave everything to me.”

    Note
