Chapter 41 I Did It, Can’t I Even Talk About It?!

Lu Lin’s eyes instantly widened when he heard that, his entire face flushing red. Although he was flustered, he still felt that these people were deliberately trying to trick him.

Pei Yumin didn’t lay a hand on him; he was now disdainful of inflicting physical pain on him again.

Lu Lin was stubborn: “You have no evidence! Why are you arresting me!”

Tang Suichen laughed: “I dared to let you come back, so I’m not afraid of you running away again.”

Lu Lin’s heart sank. He instinctively felt that this time he had completely fallen into a trap and could never escape: “What do you mean?”

He had indeed planned to seize the opportunity to run as far away as possible after leaving this door, hide for a few days, and then return. After all, Pei Yumin was only guessing now and had no substantial evidence. Even if they sent him in, so what? He would be released in a few hours.

But looking at Tang Suichen’s confident demeanor, his earlier confidence suddenly dissipated quite a bit.

Tang Suichen smiled without speaking, pulling out his phone in front of him and calling someone whose contact name was “Little Yi.”

The other side answered quickly. Before Tang Suichen could speak, a cheerful, joking voice came through: “Bro.”

Just one word made Lu Lin’s legs instantly go weak, and his whole body was instantly covered in cold sweat.

He was too familiar with this voice. He had received no small amount of “care” from the owner of this voice recently.

He almost thought he wouldn’t be able to return, but unexpectedly, the two people who had been following him suddenly disappeared the last time he went out. He thought that even the heavens were helping him successfully escape.

He felt excited all the way back. He even thought that after escaping this time, everything from the past would become a fleeting cloud.

He knew that his family had scammed a lot of money from Lu Shangyan. If he could get his hands on that money and return a little bit to that man, he would have a chance to make a comeback.

He had always felt that his previous business failure wasn’t his fault, but bad luck. But this time, when he ran out, he felt that his luck had arrived, and he would soon rise to prominence.

But now, hearing that person’s voice and seeing Tang Suichen’s disdainful look, he suddenly realized that all of this might be an illusion. He had long become a lamb waiting to be slaughtered on someone else’s platter!

A look of despair appeared on his face, and his gaze towards Tang Suichen became increasingly panicked.

Tang Suichen ignored him, only speaking to the person on the phone: “Where are you now? Have you finished the task I assigned you?”

“Bro, are you still worried when I’m handling things?” The words were full of intimacy. “Little Yi” smiled brightly: “You’ve given me so much pocket money. If I don’t help you do things properly, wouldn’t I be letting you down?”

“Besides, I’ll need your help in many more places in the future.”

Tang Suichen knew what he meant: “Send the evidence of his crime to Sui County. Get it there before four o’clock this afternoon. You won’t be shortchanged on the benefits.”

“Little Yi” immediately agreed, without a second of hesitation, picking up his things and heading out: “I remember that Lu Lin is from Sui County, right? But it seems quite far from us. Aren’t you making a mountain out of a molehill? Wouldn’t it be simpler to deal with him right here? The person is here; you can even kill him if you want. But if you go to that small place, it might become much more complicated to operate.”

“It’s fine,” Tang Suichen said. “The main thing is that his family is also quite troublesome. They scammed a lot of money from a friend of mine, and I want to take this opportunity to get it all back.”

“This matter is quite old, and investigating is difficult. I’m afraid he’ll run away, so I want to get some evidence of his crime to detain him for a few more days, which will make the investigation easier.”

“I’m good at collecting money!” The other party immediately became excited: “I’ve been bored stiff at home recently. How about you let me help you collect the debt? I can also find some fun while I’m at it.”

Lu Lin’s lips trembled, but his voice was a shout: “You can’t let him come!”

He would be skinned alive under “Little Yi’s” hands, let alone his mother?

And those so-called uncles and aunts of his—if it weren’t for the money, they would have probably completely fallen out over that incident many years ago!

If they knew now that he owed so much money outside, they might push all the blame onto him and choose to sacrifice him to protect the bigger picture!

He absolutely could not let such a thing happen: “My mother didn’t do anything wrong! Why are you treating her like this!”

Pei Yumin held the listless Lu Shangyan, settling him down on the steps nearby, then sat next to him, wrapping an arm around his shoulder to let him lean on him.

Hearing the words, his gaze turned fierce: “Did she really do nothing wrong?!”

Lu Lin instantly dared not speak: “The one who owes you money is me, not my mother. If you want money, take care of yourselves!”

As long as his mother was safe, she and those uncles and aunts would remain tied together. They would always help each other and wouldn’t constantly think about pushing one person out.

But at this moment, he was already full of flaws. In front of these people, his anger had become a joke. No matter how hard he tried to salvage the situation, it only made people think he was foolish, incompetent, and laughable!

The person on the other end also heard Lu Lin’s voice, and a hint of mockery was mixed in his tone: “Bro, are you with him right now?”

“Speaking of which, I haven’t seen him for a while, and I kind of miss him. But it’s okay, I’ll be able to see him this afternoon.”

Lu Lin’s mind instantly conjured a smiling face. Little Yi’s face looked younger than his actual age, and he always appeared innocent and harmless when talking to people.

But now, he knew clearly that this “Little Yi” was ruthless and vicious. Once entangled with him, it meant eternal damnation!

Tang Suichen hung up the phone and warned Lu Lin: “Even if you run now, you won’t get far. I can know every place you go. I can catch you anytime I want.”

Lu Lin’s tightly clenched arms relaxed. He had originally thought about pushing away the two people beside him and running while they weren’t paying attention, but after hearing this, he had no thoughts of escape left.

If he hadn’t made that call to “Little Yi,” he felt there might still be a turning point. But now, it was over, completely over!

In the beginning, he and Little Yi drank a few glasses of wine together outside. Little Yi wore designer clothes and spent money like water. At the time, he only felt envious.

Later, when he met Little Yi again, many people respectfully called him “Brother Yi” along the way, and he started to feel jealous.

He didn’t know why such a clean and seemingly weak person was surrounded by so many people holding him up and flattering him.

He, on the other hand, had been busy for so many years and was still unsuccessful. His eyes burned with desire. That day, he had a dream where he was the one being called “Bro.”

So, the first thing he did after waking up was to find Little Yi and ask him if there was any way to make money. Little Yi had always been very enthusiastic and sincere towards him, even taking out 100,000 yuan for him to invest in a business.

However, Little Yi was soon going out of town. For the sake of that 100,000 yuan and his future prosperity, he immediately followed him.

In the early stages, he was essentially getting something for nothing. He didn’t spend a penny. After the money was invested, he did nothing but follow “Little Yi” to eat and drink, attending what were called social engagements with big bosses every day.

He was drunk and muddled every day. Half a month later, he vaguely received 200,000 yuan.

In one week, he had earned 100,000.

So, without thinking, he threw all his connections into it. He earned more and more, and his appetite grew bigger and bigger. Every day, alcohol was poured into his stomach like water, and his life was dark, decadent, and unbearable.

But sometimes, when he sobered up and saw the balance in his bank account, he would smile and go back to drinking and indulging.

Perhaps on the last day, he woke up to find that his millions had vanished overnight, and he even owed a lot of money.

With interest compounding, he couldn’t even count how many zeros were after the debt amount now.

Little Yi also seemed like a different person after that. Although he still wore that smiling expression, two poisonous sharp swords were hidden behind those smiling eyes!

As long as his gaze fell upon him, he would rather die!

He didn’t know what “Little Yi” had used on him. He only knew that if he didn’t obey, he might not survive.

He thought he had finally escaped, and he didn’t dare to linger outside, fleeing back overnight.

In Sui County, he felt absolutely safe.

But he never expected that Lu Shangyan had somehow gotten acquainted with this group of powerful and tricky people!

And, Little Yi had followed him here too.

He slumped dejectedly onto the ground, bending his legs and burying his head between his knees, his hands weakly clutching his hair.

Pei Yumin saw that Lu Shangyan’s emotions were unstable and wanted to take him away first: “Chenzi, I’ll leave the rest to you.”

Tang Suichen glanced at the still-dazed Lu Shangyan and felt even more that this Lu Lin was no good. He wished he could smash him to death with a shovel right there!

But he held back. After all, he had just gotten married. He needed to be an obedient boy who didn’t need Song Yuxin to clean up his messes later.

So, he just gritted his teeth and nodded: “You guys go back to the hotel first. I’ll notify you when Little Yi arrives. Anyway, the evidence hasn’t arrived yet, so we can’t do much.”

With Tang Suichen personally supervising, Pei Yumin felt reassured. He helped Lu Shangyan up again, but after walking a few steps, Lu Shangyan suddenly turned his head, gathered his strength, and retreated back: “No, I can’t leave!”

“You need rest now.” Pei Yumin’s lips brushed against his soft hair, and a gentle, comforting voice sounded in his ear: “It’s okay. There are so many people watching him here; he won’t escape.”

“Tang Suichen and Zhao Jian are both here. They will notify you immediately if anything happens, don’t worry.”

“Tonight will definitely be busy. You need to take this time to eat and get a good night’s sleep to replenish your energy. Otherwise, how will you fight those people to the end tonight?”

Lu Shangyan was still unwilling to leave, so Pei Yumin cupped his face, making him look at himself.

His eyes were firm: “Trust me, I won’t lie to you.”

Lu Shangyan slowly moved his eyes, finally regaining a little spirit. Pei Yumin seized the opportunity to lead him to the car.

Lu Shangyan remained silent the entire way. Pei Yumin tried every way to talk to him, but he didn’t even make a gesture. Finally, Pei Yumin gave up, deciding to let him rest properly.

Lu Shangyan didn’t want to eat. He drove Lu Shangyan around the city for a while. Lu Shangyan became increasingly tired, and only when he was close to falling asleep did Pei Yumin bring him back to the hotel.

But after lying down, Lu Shangyan became alert again, staring wide-eyed and refusing to sleep. His eyes were moist, but no more tears flowed out.

Pei Yumin felt heartbroken watching him. Without asking for Lu Shangyan’s permission, he took a shower and lay down beside Lu Shangyan. During this time, Lu Shangyan’s gaze silently followed his figure.

Lu Shangyan saw him lie down on his bed and slightly parted his lips, wanting to say something, but when the words reached his mouth, he forgot what he wanted to say. He only knew that Pei Yumin smelled good and his chest was warm.

Lu Shangyan felt that the current environment was safe. His eyelids then grew heavy, and he truly fell asleep, burdened with worries.

He had many nightmares. He saw his parents, who hadn’t appeared in his dreams for a long time. His mother’s face was devoid of smiles, and his father severely scolded him: Why did you support our enemy for so many years! Why didn’t you investigate the cause of their death all these years!

He repeatedly had the same dreams, repeatedly heard the same words. When he woke up, the curtains were tightly drawn, the room was pitch black, and he was covered in cold sweat.

He sniffled, trembling as he picked up his phone and called Pei Yumin.

The call didn’t connect. Footsteps quickly sounded outside, and then, Pei Yumin rushed in, looking wind-swept. Their eyes met, and Lu Shangyan fell into a warm embrace: “What’s wrong, Shangshang baby? I’m here.”

He originally wanted to tell Lu Shangyan not to cry, but seeing his red-rimmed eyes, he pressed his head against his shoulder: “Cry if you want to. I’ve got everything covered.”

Lu Shangyan just leaned on his shoulder. When he came to his senses, his face was covered in tears, and his vision was blurred. He couldn’t see anything clearly.

He felt that he had shed too many tears in the past few days and was too fragile in front of Pei Yumin.

But he just couldn’t control it.

The person covered in thorns met Pei Yumin, who had full wings, and rested briefly in his arms.

From then on, the thorns gradually softened, revealing the long-unhealed scars hidden beneath.

But the scars only appeared for a second in front of him before being carefully licked and gradually healed.

Pei Yumin told him: “No matter how big the problem is, I’ll back you up.”

Lu Shangyan had been exposed outside for half a day and hadn’t had a drop of water. His tears had also dried up. He released his grip, stood up, and went to drink water nearby.

His state was much more normal than before, which scared Pei Yumin so much that he didn’t dare to speak, afraid that his voice would startle Lu Shangyan.

After all, Lu Shangyan’s current behavior was too unusual. He even poured another glass of water and handed it to him after drinking his own.

Pei Yumin didn’t dare not accept it and drank half a glass under his gaze.

Lu Shangyan sat back down next to him: “If the murderer who killed my parents really is Lu Lin, then haven’t I been useless all these years? I was already suspicious of them, yet I couldn’t do anything and even gave them so much money.”

But at first, he was only suspicious. After his parents were rescued, his uncles and aunts refused to pay for medical expenses, delaying treatment. Only today did he realize that the alleged murderer, Ye Xu, was framed, and the real killer was hiding right beside him, draining everything his parents had left him!

Pei Yumin knew what he was thinking: “You just didn’t know they could be so shameless. This matter has never been your fault. You are one of the victims.”

“Besides, you’ve been very capable on your own. You protected your parents’ old house, grew up healthy, fulfilled their wish by getting into a good university. They forced you to give them money. If you hadn’t, the house would be gone, and you wouldn’t have been able to go to university. Your parents would be even sadder.”

Lu Shangyan’s hands were trembling again. He wanted to hide them so Pei Yumin wouldn’t see, but they were grasped by Pei Yumin just before he could put them behind his back.

He felt the warmth and realized how cold his fingers were.

Pei Yumin squeezed his palm: “Blame those scumbags.”

“I will help you get the money back. By then, it won’t count as you giving it to them, but as you having planned in advance to make them bleed heavily a decade later, dealing them a fatal blow!”

Lu Shangyan pursed his lips, knowing that Pei Yumin was trying to comfort him. If Tang Suichen and Pei Yumin hadn’t helped him this time, he might have been kept in the dark forever, always following their demands and throwing money into their bottomless pit. But for a moment, he felt much better inside.

The last time he went back with Pei Yumin, he gave everyone two thousand yuan, thinking it was the last payment and he wouldn’t give any more in the future.

But thinking about it now, if Pei Yumin hadn’t completely torn off the mask with those people back then, he might have returned to his old ways when those aunts came knocking again, continuing to send them money every month. Perhaps the old house might not have been saved either.

He had always believed that because he wanted to give his child a home and a stable life, he had to live for himself now. And it was because of the child in his belly that he had the courage to completely say goodbye to the past.

But now it seemed that his so-called courage was minimal. If it weren’t for Pei Yumin, even if he had taken that step, he would eventually be scared and retreat completely.

It was Pei Yumin behind him, pushing him onto a path where there was no turning back.

Lu Shangyan turned to look at Pei Yumin: “I just dreamed of my parents. They said in the dream that I raised their enemy for so many years and that I was useless.”

Pei Yumin covered his ears: “It’s all fake. You were just scared by that bastard Lu Lin today. You’ll be fine after a while.”

“You are so outstanding now. They would be happy for you; how could they scold you?”

Lu Shangyan lowered his head, lost in thought. Since he wasn’t speaking, Pei Yumin didn’t dare to ask casually.

The two sat shoulder to shoulder in silence for a long time, so long that Pei Yumin unconsciously softened his breathing.

Lu Shangyan was thirsty again and drank the remaining half glass of water Pei Yumin had left: “Did Tang Suichen contact you just now?”

Pei Yumin understood who he was asking about and explained: “You know Sui County is a bit far. Tang Suichen was being demanding. Little Yi probably won’t arrive until after five o’clock.”

Lu Shangyan blinked his sore eyes: “It’s okay. You won’t let Lu Lin run away, right?”

“Of course!” Pei Yumin immediately promised: “Not only will he not escape today, but he won’t escape in the future either! And those uncles and aunts of yours will all have to pay the price for what they did.”

Lu Shangyan was silent for a moment before saying: “You are very good to me.”

Pei Yumin answered frankly: “Of course I have to be good to you, because I like you.”

Lu Shangyan’s eyelids fluttered. Pei Yumin added: “You know that. You said so on the train; you know I like you.”

Lu Shangyan said: “I feel like I’m taking advantage of your affection by having you help me deal with trouble.”

“That’s not taking advantage; I’m doing this willingly.” Pei Yumin sighed, pretending to be relaxed: “I wish you would take advantage of me more, but you always stop me from helping with many things, so I can only find things within my capability to solve for you. Otherwise, I, your future quasi-boyfriend, would seem too useless.”

“I want to become your family. I have to find ways to be your support. I am pursuing you, so I need to show sincerity to move you, not just say nice things to soften your heart.”

But Lu Shangyan didn’t catch the meaning: “Aren’t you saying nice things right now?”

Pei Yumin heard the tone in his voice and knew that his emotions had stabilized quite a bit. He also dared to start coaxing Lu Shangyan in his previous playful manner: “I did it, can’t I even talk about it?!”

Lu Shangyan’s lips curved up: “Thank you. I know.”

“You must know!” Pei Yumin hugged his arm and shook it a few times: “Because only then will you fall for me, and we can walk into the hall of marriage together!”

Lu Shangyan saw him drifting off-topic and turned his head away: “I haven’t considered that much yet.”

“It’s okay, take your time considering.” Pei Yumin said: “Anyway, I’ve decided on you for this life. If you don’t agree, I’ll just keep waiting.”

Lu Shangyan frowned slightly: “Let’s talk properly after everything is over.”

Pei Yumin’s heart leaped, but he still pretended to be calm: “Alright, however you want to talk, we’ll talk.”

Lu Shangyan checked the time: “Are Tang Suichen and the others still at the old house?”

Pei Yumin shook his head: “Shortly after we left, he brought Lu Lin back. He’s currently waiting at the police station. Zhao Jian and Tang Suichen are also at the hotel. When you called me just now, I was next door.”

Tang Suichen was sleeping next door.

Lu Shangyan asked again: “What did he say? Can we confirm that the child from back then was Lu Lin?”

Pei Yumin replied: “When Lu Lin was a child, he had a mole the size of a fingernail on his face. The melanin was very deep, so when it was surgically removed, it left a scar that hasn’t completely disappeared. The drunk man said that the child he saw at the time also had a fingernail-sized mole on his left cheek.”

“You also said that Lu Lin and his mother didn’t appear after the incident until after your parents’ funeral was over. They probably went to have surgery to remove the mole for Lu Lin because that mole was direct evidence.”

“Also, they must have told people that the child was you, because you were their son, and it would be normal for you to go out with them. You said you didn’t know anything, which means they didn’t want you to appear, fearing the truth would be exposed. But they always claimed externally that you witnessed your parents’ death firsthand and were so shocked that you had a continuous high fever.”

Being overly shocked was true, and seeing his parents die was also true, but it wasn’t witnessing it firsthand.

They saw that Lu Shangyan was young, so they could arbitrarily change the established facts and managed to conceal it for so many years.

Lu Shangyan clenched his fists: “I’m going to find them right now!”

    Note
