Chapter 23 This Pei Yumin Must Not Be Simple…

When Pei Yumin heard him say that, his face immediately flushed red. He wished he could kneel down and propose right then and there, followed by a passionate embrace, walking down the aisle, and then closing the door to live their happy little life together.

He licked his dry lips, his voice hoarse with excitement: “Then let it be forever.”

Fortunately, he only wanted to say this to Lu Shangyan, and he lowered his voice considerably. Otherwise, outsiders might have thought some Donald Duck was attending Z University for advanced studies.

Lu Shangyan’s lips curved upward, and he quietly released the hand he was gripping.

Mother Chen had originally intended to seize the opportunity to say more mocking things, seeing them enjoying a peaceful moment, eyes only for each other, hoping to escalate the situation again to help Chen Shuo regain face.

But just as she was about to open her mouth, her phone vibrated frantically. She hung up once, and the moment a sound escaped her throat, it immediately started vibrating again. She took it out and saw it was Chen Hongfei.

In just one minute, he had called over a dozen times—more calls than they had exchanged during their entire year of separation!

Mother Chen was extremely annoyed. She decided to first curse Chen Hongfei, that coward, until he shrank back into his shell, and then continue lecturing Lu Shangyan.

After answering the call, she launched into a furious tirade. Just before she hung up again, a short laugh came from the other end.

    It was a woman.

For some reason, Mother Chen’s brow twitched. Then she heard the voice on the other side say: “After all these years, Wanfang is still so sharp-tongued.”

Her given name was Xu Wanfang. For years, outsiders called her Mrs. Chen, and few people called her by her given name. Moreover, the voice that spoke her name carried a great sense of pressure. Her heart sank. This voice was all too familiar—wasn’t it Madam Yuan, whom she had just spoken to on the phone yesterday!

Pei Yumin took another deep look at Lu Shangyan. When he snapped back to reality, the class bell had already rung once.

Seeing Xu Wanfang holding her phone, her face pale, he told Lu Shangyan to go to class first, saying he would handle the rest.

Lu Shangyan did not refuse this time, nor did he ask why. He turned and left decisively. Xu Wanfang stood there with a wooden expression, watching him go but not daring to utter another word.

Chen Shuo was oblivious to everything that had transpired. Seeing her like this, he immediately said with displeasure: “Mom! Why are you afraid of Dad, of all people!”

Xu Wanfang turned around and slapped him across the face. Chen Shuo turned his head away, and bright red finger marks quickly appeared on his face. Half of his face visibly swelled up.

Since Chen Shuo was a child, she had been the one who spoiled him the most. Forget hitting him, she had barely even spoken a harsh word to him. This slap completely stunned him, leaving him speechless for a long time.

It was Xu Wanfang who, looking at Pei Yumin, forced out an awkward, ingratiating smile: “Yumin, you’ve grown up and changed completely. The things Auntie said just now were entirely because I didn’t recognize you. Auntie apologizes for what happened just now. Could you please go and talk to your mother…”

Pei Yumin interrupted her: “Let’s talk somewhere private. There are too many people here, and I don’t want to cause any more trouble for Lu Shangyan because of you.”

They went to a small milk tea shop. Pei Yumin transferred twenty thousand yuan to the owner and asked him to turn off the surveillance cameras.

Pei Yumin used his straw to suck up a pearl, chewing it in his mouth: “This matter cannot be resolved peacefully.”

After Lu Shangyan’s class ended, he saw Chen Shuo standing at the classroom door, eyes red and face swollen. He retracted the foot he was about to step out with, planning to exit through the back door to avoid the annoyance of seeing him again.

But this time, when Chen Shuo saw him, he didn’t shout and yell like before. Instead, he ran up to him, bowed a perfect ninety degrees, and shouted: “I’m sorry! I was wrong! Please forgive me!”

This display startled Lu Shangyan. The strap of his backpack slipped down to his wrist, but he caught it firmly.

Someone like Chen Shuo valued face above all else. Even if he was wrong, he wouldn’t apologize, let alone do so publicly in this manner. Whatever the reason for his sudden change in temperament, his face was still clearly etched with humiliation.

Lu Shangyan tilted his head and glanced at him: “I don’t accept.”

Chen Shuo was sweating profusely: “What do I have to do for you to forgive me?”

Lu Shangyan narrowed his eyes, staring at him. Chen Shuo’s current appearance didn’t look like he understood his mistake; he simply looked afraid. Lu Shangyan didn’t know what he was afraid of, but he knew it wasn’t him. If he were to forgive him now, he would be too kind, and the survival rules he had struggled to live by until now did not allow for boundless kindness.

Lu Shangyan ignored him, turned, and walked downstairs, leaving Chen Shuo alone standing there, letting the surrounding schoolmates gossip about him and spread rumors he didn’t want to hear.

The Chen family went bankrupt seven days later. Chen Hongfei had been cautious for half his life, and his back had been bent for half his life. Finally, on the day the assets were liquidated, he straightened up again. Now that things had come to this, he actually felt relieved.

A while ago, when he brought Chen Shuo back from outside the police station, he hadn’t had time to lecture him on the road before he received a call from Xu Wanfang. Xu Wanfang cursed him, saying he was a useless husband before and now a useless father!

After finally managing to hang up, Xu Wanfang had already found him based on the location Chen Shuo had sent, blocking his necessary route and taking Chen Shuo away early.

He knew Xu Wanfang had also been spoiled growing up. Her upbringing meant she feared nothing and was too lazy to think of cunning schemes, often acting straightforwardly.

If Xu Wanfang knew Lu Shangyan was just a poor student with no parents, she would probably have been even more ruthless. So, he patiently endured her scolding, rushed over to her, and told her about Pei Yumin, urging her not to interfere anymore.

Unexpectedly, she let it go in one ear and out the other, her mind entirely focused on getting revenge for Chen Shuo. She even called Pei Yumin’s mother to inquire. Chen Shuo’s brainless behavior was exactly inherited from her!

Now, because of her and Chen Shuo’s actions, the Xu family was also implicated. Before her elder brother took over the company, she could walk sideways in the family home. Now she couldn’t. Her elder brother was married, and he had a formidable sister-in-law.

As soon as the company was implicated, the sister-in-law packed Xu Wanfang’s belongings and threw her out. Then she paid a visit to the Pei family, implying that she had severed ties with Xu Wanfang and asking them to be lenient.

But Madam Yuan completely ignored her, acting as if she knew nothing about anything. Feeling snubbed, the sister-in-law returned and took out her anger on Xu Wanfang. She had disliked Xu Wanfang for a long time, and now she finally found a suitable opportunity to completely sweep her out the door!

She was in the right this time. For the sake of the company, even if Xu Wanfang’s elder brother wanted to mediate, he couldn’t. The Xu family was also precarious. If Xu Wanfang continued to stay in the family home, they probably wouldn’t last much longer!

Xu Wanfang could only grab her luggage and move back in with Chen Hongfei.

Chen Hongfei finished tidying up their things, sat on the sofa, and glanced at her: “I have no business acumen, and I’m getting old. I can’t handle the stress anymore. I only have some spare cash left. I plan to go back to my hometown and open a small store. If you can’t accept that, let’s go get a divorce certificate today.”

When she was young, she thought Chen Hongfei looked good and cried and fussed until she married beneath her to him.

After getting married and having Chen Shuo, Chen Hongfei aged, and she felt he was embarrassing. But the two families were already closely linked, and divorce wasn’t the best option. So, she found an opportunity to have a huge fight with Chen Hongfei and moved out. For the past few years, she had traveled the world and had countless friends, but now she had nowhere to go, and only Chen Hongfei was willing to take her in.

She couldn’t survive on her own. She immediately grabbed his hand and burst into tears, terrified: “I’ll go with you. I’ll follow you obediently from now on.”

Lu Shangyan’s ears were quiet for several days before he realized Chen Shuo had vanished into thin air.

His phone was not very sensitive, so he didn’t frequently check the school forum, and he had few friends at school, so he was always a bit behind on gossip.

He only heard about this incident from Zhao Jian. That’s when he learned that Chen Shuo had withdrawn from school, and it wasn’t as simple as being kept home to reflect for a few days.

Zhao Jian chattered in his ear: “The video of him apologizing to you has gone viral in your school! You mean you didn’t know anything about it?”

Lu Shangyan paid for the girl in front of him. He really hadn’t known about this!

He hadn’t been interested a few days ago, but now that Zhao Jian mentioned it, he was genuinely curious what Pei Yumin had said to Chen Shuo after he went to class that day, causing such a troublemaker to be completely subdued, even disappearing without a trace.

Zhao Jian looked at him and clicked his tongue a few times: “Looking at this, this Pei Yumin must not be simple! You said before that he was just an ordinary working man, but now, why don’t I believe it at all?”

Lu Shangyan lowered his eyes in thought. His brow didn’t unfurrow until Pei Yumin came to pick him up to go home.

That night after returning home, he kept waiting for Lu Shangyan to bring it up proactively. He was also considerate, knowing Lu Shangyan was thin-skinned, so he only dared to cautiously probe.

But Lu Shangyan acted as if nothing had happened, which left him a bit puzzled. Today, he really couldn’t wait any longer and began to formally hint: “Four days ago, what did you mean by ‘forever’?”

Lu Shangyan was peeling the chestnuts Pei Yumin brought and popping them into his mouth. Hearing the question, he mumbled a reply: “Forever good brothers.”

Pei Yumin’s hands trembled. He had never been this scared in his life: “You’re kidding, right?”

Wife turning into brother—he couldn’t even bear to think about it!

Lu Shangyan, however, looked at him with clear eyes, showing no sign of joking.

He had thought Lu Shangyan was finally catching on and was ready to break through the window paper and confirm their relationship. Who knew there wasn’t a window paper between them, but an insurmountable high wall? In this situation, even if he poked his finger until it broke, it wouldn’t help!

Good brother sounded even worse than live-in roommate!

He was truly restless. After holding it in for a long time, he couldn’t help but ask awkwardly: “Lu Shangyan, can we not be good brothers? I don’t want to just be brothers with you.”
