Chapter Index

Lu Shangyan’s gaze drifted away after he finished speaking. He wanted to know the answer, yet for some inexplicable reason, he didn’t dare to listen closely, hoping to escape reality by emptying his mind.

But Pei Yumin kept his eyes subtly fixed on Lu Shangyan’s profile, not saying a word for a long time.

Lu Shangyan grew impatient waiting, his brows furrowing. He quickly glanced at Pei Yumin, feeling slightly awkward and a little annoyed, so he pretended to be nonchalant and said, “Maybe it was just an accidental brush.”

Pei Yumin’s mouth opened wider the more he looked. Finally, he simply pulled the car over to the side of the road and stammered out, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, “Lu Shangyan, I will take responsibility!”

Lu Shangyan blinked, not expecting Pei Yumin to give him that kind of answer, though he hadn’t figured out what answer he wanted to hear either.

Pei Yumin’s eyes were full of sincerity. Seeing Lu Shangyan remain silent, he repeated firmly, word by word, “I will definitely take responsibility! If you are willing, I can have my parents come over today to propose marriage.”

Lu Shangyan took a deep breath, tossing the messy, tangled thoughts out of his head. Under Pei Yumin’s starry-eyed gaze, he gradually calmed his anxious mood and let out a light, forced laugh. “That doesn’t even count as a kiss. What is there to take responsibility for?”

They had slept together and messed around for nearly a night, and he hadn’t needed to take responsibility then. Now, it was even less necessary. He wasn’t some ancient young lady who would panic about losing her chastity just because someone held her hand.

Pei Yumin’s ears turned bright red. He belatedly realized what he had just said and annoyedly rubbed his neck, following Lu Shangyan’s lead. “I was just joking.”

He secretly breathed a sigh of relief, realizing he had been too hasty just now and almost let Lu Shangyan discover his malicious intent in approaching him.

He didn’t want to have to go through a long, winding process to finally be with Lu Shangyan. Moreover, if he really had to go through the “crematorium” phase—which would be physically and emotionally damaging—how badly would he be ruined? He was already older than Lu Shangyan. Even if he managed to win him over, he might be disliked for not being handsome enough, and this whole ordeal might become a lifelong knot in their relationship.

The more he thought about it, the more terrifying it seemed. If he broke an arm or a leg during the wife-chasing process, that would be fine; at least he could recover in bed. But what if he lost a kidney or other organs? Then he wouldn’t be a complete man anymore…

He felt lingering fear. “Lu Shangyan, you won’t secretly run away because of this, will you?”

It was a very strange question. Lu Shangyan shook his head in confusion, not understanding why he would need to run away.

It was just a kiss… he just couldn’t remember a kiss… and wanting to be with him was just a joke…

Lu Shangyan sighed again. The more he thought, the more annoyed he became, so he simply closed his eyes to review the day’s lesson content and try to summon sleep.

Pei Yumin genuinely believed he didn’t care and temporarily relaxed.

After dropping Lu Shangyan off at home, he used the excuse of an urgent company matter to sneak out and quickly returned to the milk tea shop where he and Lu Shangyan had hidden. He was very grateful that this shop, less than twelve square meters, had been willing to spend money on two surveillance cameras.

The owner was in his fifties and looked kind and approachable. Pei Yumin leaned on the counter and asked him to retrieve the surveillance footage, starting from when Lu Shangyan ran into the shop with him. He watched until he saw the kiss Lu Shangyan mentioned.

Xia Li was there at the time, and the shop space was small. To leave enough room for Xia Li, they had to stand close together. The aisle could temporarily accommodate two people. Initially, when he and Lu Shangyan stood face-to-face, there was some distance, but then there was a sudden rush of footsteps outside. Fearing Lu Shangyan would be discovered, he moved closer to him.

Lu Shangyan wasn’t much shorter than him. If he had leaned in, he would have kissed the tip of Lu Shangyan’s nose! A sense of regret arose in him.

However, he hadn’t thought much about it then, only focusing on protecting Lu Shangyan. But Lu Shangyan was leaning against the wall, panting, and due to Pei Yumin’s sudden closeness, he instinctively tried to dodge. But the distance was too small; even dodging didn’t help, and Pei Yumin’s lips unintentionally brushed past Lu Shangyan’s eyelid.

It happened very quickly, perhaps less than a second. Pei Yumin hadn’t noticed, but Lu Shangyan’s eyes instantly widened, his gaze shifting repeatedly before he pursed his lips and lowered his head, making no further movement.

Pei Yumin watched this segment repeatedly until the owner couldn’t stand it anymore. “Young man, you standing here is really disrupting my business.”

Tall and long-legged, he was hunched over the counter with his butt sticking out, completely blocking the not-so-wide aisle. Moreover, he kept smiling foolishly at the screen with a look of happiness. If it weren’t for the fact that he was well-dressed, handsome, and spoke clearly when asking for help, the owner would have thought he was some family’s simpleton who had run away and would have called the police to send him home, counting it as a good deed.

Pei Yumin finally snapped back to reality, realizing he had been watching for over half an hour. He picked up his phone, scanned the QR code on the counter, and transferred fifty thousand yuan to the owner. “I’m buying this video clip. Can you send it to my phone now? Delete all copies after sending.”

The owner hadn’t seen this kind of situation in years. Before he could react, the video was clipped and sent. Pei Yumin quickly saved it and watched the owner delete the file.

His first intimacy with Lu Shangyan could only be saved and watched repeatedly by him alone. No one else could possess it!

After getting into the car, he screenshotted the frame where his lips landed on Lu Shangyan’s eyelid and set it as his phone wallpaper.

He didn’t dare change the lock screen as well, afraid Lu Shangyan might notice.

On the way back, he routinely picked up the groceries from the housekeeper, planning to immediately return and make fish soup for Lu Shangyan after dropping him off at his part-time job. By the time Lu Shangyan finished work, the soup would be ready, and he could take it to pick him up, ensuring he had a hot meal right after work.

Lu Shangyan’s stomach hadn’t been as uncomfortable recently, but he was still getting thinner. Occasionally, halfway through a meal, his stomach would feel sour, or he would feel bloated after eating, asking for digestive tablets. His appetite had dropped by more than half. Pei Yumin wanted to seize every opportunity to feed Lu Shangyan more and find ways to nourish his stomach, preferably helping him gain back some weight.

Just as he was thinking this, Old Pei called him. Seeing the photo of himself and Lu Shangyan on the screen, he couldn’t help but belt out a loud roar along with the phone’s ringtone.

He managed to sing the theme song of Calabash Brothers with the passionate intensity of a couple deeply in love. If he didn’t know that both he and Lu Shangyan were male and couldn’t have children, he might have even roared out the satisfaction of having seven kids.

When he finally answered the phone after roaring, his voice was hoarse. Old Pei told him, “The donation matter is settled. Do you want to represent me at the ceremony at the university?”

Pei Yumin refused without hesitation. “I’m still just a small employee right now. Don’t blow my cover.”

Old Pei snorted a laugh. “Fine, go or don’t go. I was planning to let you show off in front of Lu Shangyan.”

“He’s young, studies well, highly capable, and good-looking. And you? A poor student, older, inferior to him in every way. The only thing you have going for you is a bit of money in your pocket and decent business acumen. Yet you decided to pretend to be poor. Now you don’t even have the one thing you could show off. How is Lu Shangyan supposed to like you? I told you to go for your own good, and you’re being ungrateful.”

Pei Yumin felt deeply wounded. “Are you really my biological father?”

Old Pei snorted again, only to be nudged on the arm by Madam Yuan, who was eavesdropping nearby, and became compliant. “A few days ago, I attended a friend’s full moon banquet for his grandson and saw Chen Hongfei. He was very humble, asking me not to hold a grudge against Chen Shuo. What do you think about this?”

Pei Yumin said, “He made the mistake; he bears the consequences. If Chen Hongfei dares to be a troublemaker, we’ll take him down too.”

Madam Yuan snatched the phone and added, “I was with Chen Hongfei’s wife at the time. Chen Hongfei is easy to deal with, but she is not. While chatting, I heard her mention some poor wretch climbing into beds at the university, using someone else’s influence to bully her son. She said she came back this time specifically to handle this matter and back up her son.”

Madam Yuan knew exactly how difficult this woman was. “You must take good care of Xiao Yan. Don’t let her exploit any loopholes. She has many nasty tricks.”

Pei Yumin pursed his lips. “Mom, you need to keep a close eye on her. The moment she makes a move, crush her immediately.”

“I even told Shang Shang today that I would take responsibility for him. I can’t let him down.”

Madam Yuan grew excited upon hearing this. “Take responsibility? What did you do to him?!”

But this was Pei Yumin’s little secret, which he couldn’t reveal. Seeing that they had arrived home, he used the excuse of needing to go home and cook to hang up the phone.

Having only heard half the story, Madam Yuan became restless, pacing in the living room. Finally, she slapped Old Pei on his rapidly balding forehead. “No! We must go to propose marriage! If he’s taking responsibility, what kind of parents don’t show up?”

“Besides, Xiao Yan has no parents. No one is there to advise him or plan for him. He’s such a pitiful child; we absolutely cannot treat him lightly!”

Old Pei grabbed her hand. “Alright, let’s listen to our son first.”

Seeing Madam Yuan glare, he added, “If you really want to see him, we can go secretly.”

Madam Yuan finally relented. Soon after, she received a call from Chen Hongfei, but when she answered, the voice was female. Madam Yuan recognized it as Chen Shuo’s mother.

After exchanging a few pleasantries, Mother Chen steered the conversation to the main topic. “I heard from my husband that Yu Min often meets my son at the university. Is he at Z University for something?”

Madam Yuan laughed. “Nothing much, just busy with the donation matters.”

This matter couldn’t be kept secret; Mother Chen would find out sooner or later. It was better to use this opportunity to dispel her concerns, lest she overthink things and resort to even harder-to-handle schemes against Lu Shangyan.

Mother Chen then said, “I also heard that one of Chen Shuo’s roommates is very close to him. Is there something going on? If so, I’ll stay a little longer and wait for the wedding.”

She was testing the waters subtly, and Madam Yuan played along. “How could Yu Min have time for anyone else? Maybe someone is trying to use Yu Min’s name to gain benefits for themselves. Yu Min is so busy, he doesn’t have time to deal with those people.”

Mother Chen was reassured. After a few more words, she hung up.

Madam Yuan immediately slammed her phone down. “I can’t wait another minute! We are going to see Xiao Yan right now!”
