    Chapter 10 Scum

Lu Shangyan had originally intended to refuse, but the moment Pei Yumin pressed him onto the bed, he couldn’t utter a single word.

Pei Yumin’s bed was softer than his, and it had a pleasant scent, like a baby’s cradle.

His gaze swept around the room, finally resting on Pei Yumin’s face with a hint of awkwardness. He hesitated before saying, “Then I’ll just sleep for a little while.”

Pei Yumin was still thinking about taking off his clothes and lying down together, but Lu Shangyan didn’t give him the chance. Before he could find an opportunity to speak, the person on the bed had already closed his eyes.

He looked at the bed again. The space in the rental apartment was limited. He had tried his best to get a large bed, but if two people lay down, they would still be pressed skin to skin. After careful consideration, he had no choice but to pull up a chair and sit by the bedside.

Yesterday’s short video already showed that Lu Shangyan wanted to do *that* kind of thing with him, but wanting was one thing; he hadn’t actually invited him to “sleep” together now.

As the sole heir to the Pei family’s billions upon billions in assets, as a pure and innocent virgin who had kept himself clean for his first love, and as Lu Shangyan’s steadfast protector…

He accepted this challenge and was determined to win.

Lu Shangyan was very quiet when he slept, though his brows were often subtly furrowed, making him look restless.

Pei Yumin couldn’t resist reaching out and stroking his forehead. Lu Shangyan, still dreaming, swatted at a fly, brushing his hand across his forehead, and then his frown deepened.

So, Pei Yumin didn’t dare to make any more moves. He just watched Lu Shangyan’s right hand resting by the pillow, right next to his own cheek.

He looked even more obedient like this, just like the children in the educational cartoons he watched when he was little, who slept with their hands under their heads.

Pei Yumin felt a stampede of emotions in his heart, his heartbeat accelerating. Finally, he grabbed his laptop and started reviewing the documents Secretary Qi had sent him.

But after only a few seconds, he switched screens and messaged Secretary Qi.

[My heart is uncomfortable today. I need to take the day off. Call me if it’s urgent.]

Qi Min had just arrived at the company. Seeing the message, he sighed silently and showed the screen to Assistant Dai. “He still hasn’t won him over?”

Dai Qin shrugged, looking slightly helpless. “It’s going to take a while. I’ve become his wingman now, helping him deal with all the difficulties in his love life.”

Qi Min took the cup from his hand and took a sip of the freshly brewed coffee. “I hope you can be useful. I just want to focus on work; I don’t want to manage his love life.”

Dai Qin held up a finger. “He gave me an extra ten thousand a month.”

Qi Min’s face wrinkled from the bitterness. “It’s getting too bitter. I’m not drinking it.”

Pei Yumin held back well, enduring for a full five minutes this time, keeping his eyes fixed on the computer screen. However, his fingers unconsciously and quietly touched Lu Shangyan’s exposed hand, his pinky finger subtly hooking around it.

The room had excellent lighting. Pei Yumin had to sit up straight to shield Lu Shangyan from it. He wanted Lu Shangyan to sleep longer, but someone outside was unwilling and kept making frantic phone calls.

Lu Shangyan was eventually woken up, staring blankly ahead for a moment.

He always did this when he woke up, but this time was different. Before his consciousness fully returned, a magnified face suddenly appeared in front of him, startling him. He flinched and instinctively raised his hand to strike.

But his fingers were tightly grasped. It only took a few seconds for him to finally recognize Pei Yumin’s face, and the cold sweat that had broken out slowly subsided.

Feeling awkward under the scrutiny, he excused himself to take the call on the balcony.

When he returned, his expression was even worse. He looked at Pei Yumin with difficulty. “Can you move out today? My brother suddenly said he’s coming over today.”

He knew in his heart that his brother just wanted to catch him off guard.

Pei Yumin couldn’t help but reach out and pinch his earlobe. “Don’t be afraid. If you have any trouble you can’t solve, call me. I’ll be sitting at the dessert shop downstairs.”

Lu Shangyan wanted to say no, but Pei Yumin pinched him again. He felt ticklish and wanted to dodge, but inexplicably nodded instead.

“Then I’ll put your things outside into your bedroom. Remember to lock the door so you don’t give anything away.”

Lu Lin was arriving in a hurry, so Lu Shangyan could only ask him to wait temporarily at the complex entrance. When Pei Yumin went downstairs first, he saw Lu Lin standing by the security booth, smoking.

His features bore some resemblance to Lu Shangyan, but on his high-cheekboned face, they looked extremely jarring.

Pei Yumin looked at him a few times, and Lu Lin glared back. “Do you live here too? Then do you know Lu Shangyan? Where does he live? I’m here to find him, but this old geezer won’t tell me his apartment number!”

Pei Yumin glared back intentionally. “How uncivilized.”

Lu Lin rushed forward to continue yelling, but Lu Shangyan appeared just in time to stop him. He had deliberately staggered his exit from Pei Yumin’s to avoid arousing suspicion.

Lu Shangyan glanced at Pei Yumin. He had been embarrassed so many times since childhood that he no longer cared, but being watched by Pei Yumin now made his cheeks feel hot.

He quickly lowered his head. “Brother.”

Lu Lin immediately wrapped an arm around his neck, forcing him downward. “What, ashamed of me?”

The posture was full of oppression. Lu Shangyan’s entire body bent over, yet he didn’t dare to resist at all. His face showed only panic, without a hint of anger.

Pei Yumin had seen him clash with Chen Shuo, and he looked completely different now.

Before leaving, Pei Yumin kept stealing glances at Lu Lin, determined to engrave this person in his mind so that when he found an opportunity, he could help Lu Shangyan get revenge.

This look, however, took on a different meaning in Lu Shangyan’s eyes. He buried his head lower, a bitter sense of grievance rising in his heart. He just wanted to drag Lu Lin away and disappear from Pei Yumin’s sight forever.

Lu Lin kept pressing down on him, making him lead the way to Lu Shangyan’s rented apartment, shouting the whole way. “You wouldn’t let me find you directly, are you trying to hide all the valuables at home?!”

“It hasn’t been that long since we last met, and you’ve already grown a backbone? But don’t forget whose food you grew up eating! If it weren’t for us, you would have starved to death outside!”

His voice was loud, and several residents were already standing by their windows. Lu Shangyan had to quicken his pace. He didn’t care what others said about him, but he felt awkward, afraid that these neighbors would run into Pei Yumin.

Lu Lin deliberately tried to humiliate him. “Now that you’re grown up, you want to cut ties? I’m telling you, impossible!”

Lu Shangyan took a breath and replied in a trembling voice, “I didn’t.”

Lu Lin said, “Then why didn’t you come back during the holidays before? My dad and I work outside, and my mom takes care of the few acres of land at home all by herself. She said her arms hurt recently. How heartless are you? You don’t care about her, you didn’t go back to help!”

Lu Shangyan explained, “I need to work part-time to earn tuition, and I also sent money to Second Aunt. She can hire someone to help.”

“What good is that little bit of money!” Lu Lin got into the elevator, and once they were alone, he kicked him again. “You have scholarships and work part-time every day, so you must have saved a lot of money. But you only give my mom that little bit every month? Are you trying to give her charity?”

Lu Shangyan stood in the corner of the elevator. “But I have to send money to all three aunts. I can’t afford to give more.”

Lu Lin wanted to kick him again. This was a habit he had developed since childhood, and Lu Shangyan’s habit was not to dodge.

Fortunately, the elevator opened in time, and Lu Lin stopped his cursing. After entering the apartment, he started again. “You have money to live out here, but no money for my mom? My mom is still living in the village. She’s never lived in a nice place like this. You ungrateful wretch, we raised you for nothing!”

“If I had known this, I shouldn’t have let you go to university. I should have made you start earning money to support the family earlier, so my mom wouldn’t have to work so hard at her age!”

Lu Shangyan’s head ached. “What about you?”

Lu Lin froze, then slapped the back of his head, making him even dizzier. “You’ve really grown wings, now you dare to talk back to me?”

“I’m a man destined for great things. My money is for business, unlike you! ”

His head spun, and his stomach started to feel sick. Lu Shangyan rubbed his stinging nose, forcing himself to calm down. He already knew what Lu Lin wanted. “How much money do you want?”

Lu Lin’s expression finally improved. “Fifty thousand.”

Lu Shangyan was stunned for a moment, then mumbled, “I don’t have that much.”

Lu Lin wouldn’t listen. “Stop trying to fool me. You definitely saved money. This apartment clearly isn’t cheap. If you don’t give it to me, I won’t leave. Tomorrow, I’ll go borrow it from your classmates.”

Lu Shangyan gritted his teeth and showed him his bank balance. “I only have a little over five thousand. Summer vacation is coming soon, and I need to pay tuition after that. This is the tuition I’ve saved, and I still haven’t saved enough.”

“Transfer it all to me,” Lu Lin said again. “You have no parents, yet you want to climb the social ladder. If you can’t afford it, don’t go!”

Lu Shangyan didn’t dare to resist. He transferred the entire amount in front of Lu Lin, not daring to keep a single cent for himself.

He had been afraid to apply for student loans before, fearing that his entire salary would be taken away when he started working, and he wouldn’t be able to pay it back. But now, it seemed he had no choice.

Lu Lin tapped the table. “I’m going into business with a big boss this time. He values and appreciates me. It looks like he’s even going to marry his only daughter to me. If this investment succeeds, I can marry his daughter, and all his money will be mine in the future. I’ll be much better off than you, this so-called university student. You can’t afford to give my mom money, but I will be able to, and I can even bring her to live in the city.”

Lu Shangyan knew Lu Lin was arrogant and easily deceived. “Fifty thousand is not a small amount. I really can’t give it to you. I’ve given Second Aunt a lot of money over the years. You can ask her for some; maybe that will be enough.”

Lu Lin grew anxious. “That’s my mom’s retirement money. How can I touch it? I’m not like you, who doesn’t know how to be filial to elders.”

“I already called my mom. She said if you don’t give it to me, she’ll come with First Aunt and Third Aunt to find you and have a good talk.”

Lu Shangyan felt drained. He sat on the nearby sofa, wanting a cigarette.

Lu Lin continued, “Aren’t you working part-time? Just borrow it or get a salary advance. If I make money, I’ll give you a big red envelope when you get married, so you’ll benefit too, right?”

Lu Shangyan had a terrible headache and felt unwell all over. After a moment of silence, he compromised. “I can try to find a way, but you can’t go to the university again.”

Lu Lin laughed out loud. “As long as the money is in hand, I’ll leave immediately.”

The living room was spotless everywhere, except for a small object near the TV cabinet’s flower pot that faintly glittered when the sunlight shone on it.

Pei Yumin heard and saw everything Lu Lin said.

Lu Shangyan’s eyes were red in the camera view. Pei Yumin took a deep breath and stood up, walking toward the apartment. He couldn’t stand by and watch Lu Shangyan face this… this scum alone!

Halfway there, he ran into a cheerful Lu Lin whistling as he walked out. Lu Lin said he had friends here and was going drinking tonight, telling Lu Shangyan to use this time to raise the money.

Pei Yumin was furious at his frivolous appearance. He rushed forward and grabbed his collar.

His so-called innocent facade completely vanished in that moment. His eyes were dark and gloomy, and he exuded a viciousness Lu Shangyan had never seen. “If you don’t get lost now, I guarantee you’ll die a miserable death!”
