    Chapter 39 Separation

Returning to the small house they could call home for the time being, the two of them began vigorous cleaning without taking any time to rest.

Without professional cleaning tools, they scrubbed bit by bit with a basin and old towels.Dust danced in the light coming from the window, and then gradually fell.

Sweat mixed with dust left traces on the face, but watching this small space become brighter and cleaner little by little in my hands, it took on a completely new look, and I felt a full sense of exhaustion.

The last floor was mopped, and the sun just fell again, coating the entire room with a warm golden color.

Xu Wen solemnly placed the pot of pothos in the center of the polished window sill, and a few new green leaves seemed to glow in the light.

“It’s done!” Xu Wen let out a long breath and collapsed on the bed that had just been covered with new sheets, feeling that his limbs were about to fall apart.

Lu Qingrang was also very tired, leaning against the wall, his forehead wet with sweat and sticking to his smooth forehead, but looking at the neat and tidy cabin, there was a slight satisfaction in his eyes.

After a short break, the urgency of reality caught up with me.

Xu Wen sat up straight, grabbed his phone, and took a deep breath: “Okay, let’s get down to business, find a job!”

He clicked on several mainstream recruitment software, his expression gradually changed from expectant to solemn, and his frown became tighter and tighter. The finger slides quickly on the screen, but the speed becomes slower and slower.

“Hiss…” He couldn’t help but smacked his lips, turned the phone screen to Lu Qingrang, and said with disbelief in his tone, “Brother Lu, look… the employment environment in Lin City, compared with City A, is simply… the Stone Age!”

There were only a few positions displayed on the screen. Most of them were scattered information about local small stores recruiting clerks and restaurants recruiting dishwashers. The salaries were pitifully low.

What’s worse is that the software interface itself is laggy and slow, and the job information pushed is seriously lagging behind, and is even obviously mixed with a lot of false advertisements.

“It’s not that I’m picky,” Xu Wen scratched his hair and felt a little irritated, “It’s this place… it hasn’t kept up with the times at all! It’s hard to find a job that is more reliable and uses your brain. These apps here have more than half of their functions reduced, and they are simply useless.”

He originally expected to rely on his accumulated work experience to find an office job that could make a living, but now it seems that it is simply a fantasy.

Lu Qingrang took a closer look and listened quietly to Xu Wen’s complaint before speaking softly: “Small cities are like this. There is a single industry and few opportunities.”

He paused and looked at Xu Wen, his eyes calm and tolerant, “Don’t worry, we will look for it slowly. There will always be a way.”

Xu Wen looked into Lu Qingrang’s calm eyes, took a deep breath, picked up the phone again, and started searching again unwillingly.

After another futile search, Xu Wen finally put down his phone dejectedly.

“No, the information on this is either false, or the salary is ridiculously low. It’s not enough for us to eat for a day.”

He rubbed his brows and looked at Lu Qingrang, “It seems there is no point sitting at home and waiting for the opportunity. I have to go out and see if any stores directly post recruitment notices.”

This was a stupid method he used to find part-time jobs in his previous life. Although it was inefficient, it was often more direct and reliable.

When Lu Qingrang heard this, he paused slightly in wiping the table, raised his head, and a trace of worry flashed in his eyes.

He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he just whispered: “Okay, you…be careful.”

Xu Wen saw his uneasiness, grinned, and tried to liven up the atmosphere: “Don’t worry, I have a family now, and I cherish my life very much!”

The words blurted out with a bit of joking, but it made Lu Qing’s ears warm slightly. He lowered his head and continued to wipe the table, but his movements were a little slower.

All joking aside, Xu Wen was also beating the drum in his heart. He also couldn’t feel completely at ease leaving Lu Qingrang alone at home.

“How about…” he suggested hesitantly, “you go out with me?”

Lu Qingrang shook his head. He looked out the window, his voice calm but firm: “My face is too recognizable, and I need a quiet environment to think about… ways to make money.”

He paused and added extra seriously, “You don’t have to worry about me, I won’t run around.”

Having said that, the worry in Xu Wen’s eyebrows has not dissipated.

Lu Qingrang looked at him, as if he had made up his mind. He stood up and walked to the bed, carefully taking out the old mobile phone with a broken screen from under the pillow.

“This,” he handed the phone to Xu Wen, deliberately maintaining a relaxed tone, “I have handled it myself before. It has been restored to factory settings, there is nothing in it, and it is clean. With this new number you have now, you can contact me at any time.”

This was his decision after careful consideration.

The phone has not been restored to factory settings at all. The remaining data inside, especially some of the technical backups and encrypted contact information he made before, are one of the key trump cards that he may use to make a comeback in the future, or even fight against Nangong Chen.

But he couldn’t tell Xu Wen at the moment.

He also didn’t want Xu Wen to see the side of him that was still tied up in the past and indecisive.

Before he could sort out this mess, he needed to face this embarrassment alone.

More importantly, he wants to make sure every step is taken safely.

Xu Wen took the cracked mobile phone and looked at it over and over.

He really had no interest in prying into other people’s privacy. After hearing what Lu Qingrang said and seeing his calm expression, most of his doubts were dispelled.

“Okay!” Xu Wen breathed a sigh of relief, as if he had received some promise, and stuffed the phone back into Lu Qingrang’s hand, “Then hold it carefully, and you must reply to me at any time when I send a message! I will just wander around the nearby streets, and I will never go far. Come back as soon as possible!”

With this reassurance, Xu Wen felt much more at ease.He put on the slightly bloated second-hand coat, put on his few dozen dollars in change, and went out again.

The door closed gently, and Lu Qingrang was the only one left in the small room.

He held the old mobile phone, his fingertips slowly traced across the broken screen, his eyes were complicated and difficult to distinguish.

Lying to Xu Wen filled him with guilt.

But to protect Xu Wenhe and to gain the ability to protect each other as soon as possible, these two thoughts were stronger than any emotion at this moment, like burning flames, driving all his actions.

Lu Qingrang walked to the window, his eyes following the familiar figure downstairs, watching Xu Wen blend into the sparse flow of people on the street, until the figure completely disappeared around the corner, and then he slowly looked back.

He took a deep breath, as if to press down the worry and determination into his heart. Then, he lowered his head and pressed the power button of the cracked screen phone.
