Chapter 16: Horror, A Mistake?! Until two days later, he still…

Lin Yu looked at the flowers gathered together by an invisible force. The broken and damaged petals still had crushed sap clinging to them, but they had clearly been treated with care.

It wasn’t hard to imagine how the other party had picked them up one by one and reassembled them.

A wave of tenderness washed over Lin Yu. “It’s alright. How about I give Mr. Caretaker an even prettier flower?”

The large white flower nodded up and down.

It was Yanyan’s big head swaying.

But he still didn’t discard the ruined flower. He looked into the little person’s eyes and asked, “Jiaojiao, what are you looking at?”

When he had first emerged, he clearly saw a complex expression on the other party’s face.

Yanyan’s gaze fell upon the mural behind him.

    These?

They were just some colored paintings.

They weren’t as beautiful as the scales on his body.

Lin Yu’s attention returned to the spreading blue color. “What do these depict?”

Yanyan wasn’t entirely sure himself. A segment of memory seemed to be missing from his mind, not to mention that the time period was too chaotic. He only remembered the people surrounding him, their eyes filled with fanaticism and dread.

He said flatly, “Just a story.”

    A story?

Somehow, Lin Yu felt that his caretaker didn’t seem to like this story. He patted the flower, offering a form of comfort.

Yet, Lin Yu’s mind was still drawn to that blue hue. He hesitated for a few seconds before asking, “What is the blue color in the mural?”

Could it be his little Pet?

Although, judging by the shape, the two bore no resemblance.

One was an ethereal, diffuse blue, like a phantom; the other was a small snake with hard, beautiful scales. One was virtual, the other physical.

But perhaps it was the color, so similar to the one in his memory, and the inexplicable attachment in his heart, that compelled Lin Yu to get to the bottom of it.

Yanyan hadn’t expected the little person to be so concerned, specifically asking about him.

But the figure on the mural, without scales or his dark red tail, wasn’t very attractive, which made Yanyan reluctant to admit it.

However, he saw the complex look in the little person’s eyes, as if waiting for a very important answer.

After a moment of hesitation, Yanyan decided not to deceive him.

After all, he now had beautiful scales and a tail as red as a fiery sunset.

He spoke softly, with an anticipation he didn’t even realize he held, “That is me.”

    Lin Yu’s eyes widened abruptly.

    His heart sank instantly.

He didn’t know if it was disappointment because a certain wish in his heart had been dashed, or if he was happy to know that his caretaker wasn’t some pitch-black, blue-faced, fanged ghost, but a soul entity with a clear blue aura.

After all, if the owner was good-looking, the Pet would have face when going out.

However, the disappointment on his face, though brief, was too obvious.

This caused Yanyan’s heart to instantly twist into a knot.

The answer he gave was not the one the other party wanted.

    The flower completely scattered.

White petals fluttered and danced in the air, spiraling down, only to be swept away by a sudden gust of wind, like a pale, mournful elegy rising softly.

The pitch-black behemoth, which had been silently lurking in the corner for an unknown amount of time, finally found its chance to attack.

A foul, stinking wind rushed towards Lin Yu! He could even clearly see the bloodstains remaining on the sharp fangs—teeth that could tear him apart, a gaping maw that could swallow him whole into the abyss.

The throat was blood-red and deep, like a fleshy passage leading to hell.

Lin Yu had no way to evade it.

Yet, the hideous giant mouth merely paused right before his eyes, not advancing another inch.

Time seemed to stop at that moment.

Lin Yu’s pupils contracted sharply. The next second, the massive, pitch-black beast disintegrated and crashed down in the air.

It was like a bloody and violent curtain call.

Viscous blood spread out beneath his feet, flesh tumbling everywhere. Lin Yu felt as if he were in hell.

    “Ugh—”

He was so overwhelmed by the sight that he began to dry heave uncontrollably.

Tears fell from the corners of his eyes, creating a crystalline shower in the air. In the clear reflection, Yanyan saw the fear and pain in the other party’s expression.

He suddenly realized what he had done.

The surge of brutality in his heart instantly vanished.

He shouldn’t have dealt with this damned food in front of Jiaojiao like this. He should have adopted a more direct, swift, and clean method.

    Eat it!

That way, he wouldn’t have scared Jiaojiao.

Yanyan felt a pang of regret. He dared not look into the other party’s eyes.

Because he hadn’t protected the little person well.

And because he was even more afraid of seeing that familiar dread in those gentle, smiling, clear eyes.

A sense of distance and fear directed at him.

Even though he had a faint premonition.

Lin Yu had never truly understood what a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood looked like until now. Although he forced himself not to look at the scattered chunks of meat, the ground was covered in fresh, flowing blood.

He could only close his eyes, but even with his eyes shut, the terrifying red color persisted in his mind, the scene looping endlessly.

    Like an American horror film.

He spoke with a trembling voice, “Can I leave?”

    “Mr. Caretaker.”

Even now, he was still impossibly polite.

    Yanyan was unhappy.

His gaze fell on the constantly trembling little person. He didn’t know what words to use to make him stay.

Jiaojiao was going to leave him.

His lead-colored vertical pupils suddenly constricted. He heard his own voice begin to tremble, “You may.”

His Mental Power carried the little person away, disappearing into the deep passage.

It felt like a farewell with no turning back.

Fortunately, the other party hadn’t rejected his Mental Power. Yanyan felt a subtle sense of relief.

Lin Yu’s mind was still blank. He couldn’t think about what he should do next. He only knew that he needed to sleep now.

To avoid recalling that horrifying scene when idle.

For the first time, he clearly realized that his caretaker possessed powerful and savage strength.

This, of course, wouldn’t make Lin Yu view him negatively; he wished the other party was stronger so he could cling to him. It was just that the impact of that scene was too great. Lin Yu felt his throat dry, as if he had aphasia. He struggled to utter a single word of praise like ‘you’re amazing.’

Being able to leave that place was probably his only driving force.

Lin Yu curled up in the fluffy blanket. The soft and warm sensation enveloped him. Lin Yu gradually felt a sense of peace and security. Like a victim who had suffered immense trauma, he hugged the blanket and fell asleep.

The ground was covered in fresh red. Lin Yu looked up at the constantly wriggling mountain of corpses, piled high.

Beneath his feet, blood-red liquid, ankle-deep, spread out, emitting the stench of blood, viscous and threatening to swallow him.

He remembered the last time he choked in the sea of blood and couldn’t help but dry heave, his stomach cramping, painfully curling up.

The moonlight was clear and bright, enveloping Lin Yu.

Yanyan had already cleaned the area. Because he had made the wrong decision by not swallowing the food and thus scaring the little person, he had eaten the scattered limbs, and the remaining blood had been absorbed by the Dark Sea.

Now, the area had returned to its original state, looking as if nothing had ever happened.

But seeing the little person’s deeply furrowed brow and painfully curled body, Yanyan knew he had still caused harm.

So much so that the other party was trapped in an unending nightmare.

He could perceive the other party’s dreams. This was an ability he couldn’t control. He once found this ability too noisy; he disliked observing human desires. But at this moment, he was grateful that he could know the little person’s dream.

This was the second time he had perceived the other party’s dream.

In the time they had spent together, he knew the other party didn’t dream often. The first time was the night the little person first stumbled in. After that, the other party’s dreams were blank; he slept very obediently and quietly.

But this time, through the other party’s eyes, Yanyan saw a sky-obscuring blood-red.

And the fear hidden deep within his heart.

His tail gently brushed against the little person’s fair, smooth cheek, as if sweeping away an invisible speck of dust.

In the dream, the blood-red background seemed to be gently erased by an eraser. The fresh, bloody stench slowly receded, like a retreating tide. Immediately following, surging white waves swept him into a glowing blue scene.

The sea and sky were one color, azure and clear.

Seagulls circled and cried. White waves gently lapped at his ankles, as if washing something away.

Lin Yu looked up in a daze, feeling the memory from before gradually blurring, and his heavy mood unconsciously began to ease.

But he still felt like something was missing.

He looked at the sand beneath his feet, fine and loose, and picked up a wooden stick that had appeared beside him at some point.

He drew a long, winding snake on the sand, followed by a cartoon little person with short hair wearing a T-shirt.

Lin Yu didn’t stop. Next to the little person, he drew a flower, and then a massive, completely smeared, irregular shape wearing that blooming flower.

It was more than twice the size of the little person, exuding a sense of simple-mindedness.

After observing his masterpiece, looking at the three completely different types of creatures, Lin Yu finally felt satisfied. He dropped the stick.

He used his index finger to draw a heart, enclosing all three creatures within it.

He sat in front of his sand drawing. The waves had also become very calm and didn’t rush over again. Lin Yu quietly looked at the distant sea and clouds, his eyes curved, his smile relaxed.

He knew he had been protected once again.

As the first ray of light appeared on the horizon, darkness retreated, and the sun rose. Lin Yu also opened his eyes. The serenity of the dream still lingered in his mind; all gloom seemed to have vanished. He rolled over in the blanket, looked at the rising sun, which resembled a salted duck egg yolk, and softly said, “Mr. Caretaker, are you there?”

He wanted to invite the other party to watch the sunrise with him.

But the air was silent; no one answered.

Lin Yu blinked. No floating flowers or plants appeared in his sight, so he asked softly again, “Mr. Caretaker?”

Suppressing the disappointment in his heart, this was the first time he hadn’t received a response from the other party.

Perhaps he was busy, or perhaps he shouldn’t be so clingy.

    Give each other some space.

Until two days later, Lin Yu still hadn’t received any response.
