Chapter 1 Died and Came Back to Life. Whose Pet Are You?

Lin Yu never imagined he would collapse like this one day.

Long hours of staying up late and an irregular schedule caused a sharp, pulling pain in his heart the moment he stood up. It felt as if countless threads were tugging at his heart from his left back, threatening to tear it apart. His chest was heavy, like a giant boulder was pressing down on him. It was a severe affliction.

With trembling hands, he dialed the emergency number, then forced himself to walk over to the Terrarium, closing the feeding window he hadn’t had time to cover after feeding.

Although the occupant was usually very well-behaved and quiet, it was, after all, a venomous reptile. The combination of the two Debuffs made it inherently terrifying.

Even though Lin Yu found it incomparably beautiful.

Like a clear, boundless sea under the sun.

    “Yanyan.”

He softly called out to his good boy.

These few brief movements already caused cold sweat to bead on his forehead.

Lin Yu struggled to control his breathing and lay flat on the floor. He gently blinked his eyelashes, the only small movement he could manage now.

Through his scattered vision, he vaguely felt a patch of blue approaching him.

    The seawater swallowed him whole.

When consciousness returned, the first thing Lin Yu saw was not a clean white ceiling, but a tilted trash can.

Deep green and red trash cans that were significantly taller than him.

    Lin Yu: “?”

    What happened?

    Had the hospital been invaded?

After the initial visual shock, Lin Yu belatedly felt a lightness in his body, unlike the exhaustion he had felt from staying up all night before.

    A miracle cure?!

He lowered his gaze and placed a hand over his heart, satisfied to hear its vigorous, powerful beat. Only then did he slowly raise his head and survey his surroundings.

    Cramped, oppressive.

That was his first impression of the environment.

If it weren’t for the ridiculously large trash cans and scattered food scraps around him, Lin Yu might have suspected he had been dumped.

He pulled open his collar and saw a familiar small mole on his collarbone. He was wearing the same clothes as that day—the unchanging oversized T-shirt and close-fitting shorts. His slippers had flown off somewhere. After confirming it was his own body, Lin Yu pondered for a moment. He skirted the corner, avoiding the dirty water on the ground, and walked out of the area.

He needed to figure out where he was and what had happened.

Even though everything made him feel uneasy and fearful.

    Staying put here was pointless.

In just twenty seconds, everything before his eyes changed completely. If the people on the street had shrunk by half, he might have thought this was a commercial street near his home.

But the abnormally tall people he saw, and the beeping robots walking toward him, all indicated one thing.

    He had transmigrated.

The robot in front of him was a square, pure white cube, even taller than he was. Its forehead screen displayed winding data lines and several scattered red dots. Lin Yu didn’t understand what they meant.

Until the robot stopped and scanned him up and down.

(Micro-life Form detected. Not trash. Not trash.)

Lin Yu: “…” This level of artificial stupidity wasn’t much better.

It bypassed Lin Yu and walked into the alley he had just emerged from.

Then it swept all the garbage into its belly.

After cleaning up, the unfamiliar Cleaning Robot turned around and gave him a condescending glance. Lin Yu watched as flames suddenly erupted inside its belly, turning it into a walking furnace. With a few whooshing sounds, the previously full pile of trash was reduced to a few inches of black ash.

    Lin Yu: “…”

    Yes, he was not trash.

He waved at the robot, making his movements much larger, even making his breathing heavy and deliberate, trying to get the robot to repeat that he was not trash.

Lin Yu did not want to face the tragic one-stop service of immediate cremation right after being resurrected.

Fortunately, although the Cleaning Robot didn’t repeat itself, it didn’t make any other unnecessary movements. It tilted its head, examined Lin Yu, then puffed out a few wisps of white smoke and slowly walked away.

    “Phew…”

Lin Yu finally let out the breath he had been holding.

But halfway through exhaling, he felt the area around him become much cooler, as if covered by a massive, drifting cumulonimbus cloud, blocking the intense sunlight.

He looked up in astonishment. A huge figure was looking down at him.

As their eyes met, Lin Yu clearly saw the other person’s eyes light up. Then, a fluffy tail appeared in his line of sight, wagging constantly behind the person like a propeller.

Lin Yu felt his recently recovered heartbeat start pounding violently again. He was so nervous he could barely breathe.

Could someone please tell him where this was?

More terrifying than seeing a giant was seeing a giant with a wolf’s tail.

The only saving grace was that while the other person’s gaze was curious and confused, it showed little malice. Lin Yu shook his hand, forcing himself to greet them, “Hi.”

    “Woof!”

    Lin Yu: “…”

He calmly smoothed his wind-tousled hair. Was it a dog, then?

    That was good.

Humans and dogs were, of course, the best of friends.

He reached out, intending to greet the dog as he used to do on Blue Star, letting it sniff his scent for friendly communication.

But his body language was tense. Based on Lin Yu’s understanding of some dogs, they would put their paws on a human’s leg and wag their tails frantically when they were very happy.

He looked down at his small frame and decided he couldn’t handle that kind of behavior or size from the other party.

The person didn’t know what he was doing and tilted their head in confusion.

And Lin Yu actually heard an unfamiliar voice ring out, “Did you get lost from your owner?”

    “You cute little Pet.”

    Lin Yu: “…”

He looked at the creature before him, which he wasn’t sure was human or dog, with surprise, but his eyes brightened. He could actually understand them! The hope that had faded in Lin Yu’s heart slowly gathered again. He asked the person, “Do you know where this is?”

The moment he spoke, he distinctly saw the person abruptly step back. The previously curious face was now filled with terror.

    “Woof! You can talk!”

    Lin Yu froze.

He seemed to have done something wrong. In any era, behavior that deviated from the norm was bad. They would attract more attention, perhaps even be treated as an anomaly and eliminated. The best outcome seemed to be being used as entertainment fodder for money.

    Lin Yu turned and ran.

    “Woof! Woof!”

But his current body was not large, yet not small enough to be virtually ignored.

The rough ground scraped the soles of his feet, causing a burning sting.

Lin Yu frantically squeezed through narrow gaps. Fortunately, his body was fully recovered, and for some reason, it was much better than his previous sub-healthy state. He ran quickly for at least four or five kilometers, feeling only slightly tired.

By Lin Yu’s old standards, he was practically a superhero!

He silently gave himself a thumbs-up.

The person with the dog tail had lost sight of him behind layers of obstacles. Lin Yu looked back and could only see a tiny black dot.

    They were far apart now.

He finally relaxed and let out a breath.

After passing through the tightly packed alleyway, the view ahead suddenly opened up. What greeted him were elevated bridges winding like snakes, and towering buildings that stood like upright trees, gathering the flowing clouds into lush foliage. The sky was endlessly high, mirroring his relentlessly sinking heart. The completely unfamiliar architectural style made Lin Yu slowly stop.

    He felt afraid.

After the tension subsided, only endless fatigue remained—not physical, but psychological.

The ground was intensely hot. Occasionally, tall people passed by, but none of them noticed him. Lin Yu didn’t dare go up and greet them. He hid under an eave, where the shadow in the corner of the wall brought coolness and concealed his figure.

His thoughts drifted, and he thought of his little Pet in the other world.

He wondered how Yanyan was doing.

Lin Yu valued his life and wasn’t reckless. He had originally only kept a few geckos, but his overly curious friend had also gotten into the reptile hobby because of him.

And his friend was incredibly bold. Lin Yu didn’t understand why he didn’t choose the dominant Black King Snake or the adorable Hognose Snake, but instead went through all the trouble to buy a highly venomous Bamboo Pit Viper.

Then, one creature couldn’t get out to forage, and the other was too scared to feed it even after half a month of pacing the floor. Lin Yu felt like he was dreaming when he received his friend’s distress call.

“They’re all reptiles. You’re the expert. Please help me.”

Lin Yu still remembered the first time he saw the little snake curled up in the corner of the box. The blue color gathered together, like the smallest ocean in the world—dazzling, mysterious, and dangerous.

    He suddenly understood why.

Afterward, he gradually gave his small geckos to experienced enthusiasts and moved to a secluded house in the suburbs. But that blue island Bamboo Pit Viper stayed with him, slowly growing from the thickness of a chopstick to a somewhat plump adult.

Yet, it remained the same lazy, stay-up-late couch potato it had always been.

Lin Yu liked all things lively but disliked participating in them. Perhaps it was because becoming too reliant on each other and forming deep bonds would lead to double the pain when separating. He tried to avoid forming deep relationships with many people.

So, a quiet, cold-blooded animal that only needed feeding every few days became his most compatible roommate.

It wasn’t clingy like a cat or dog, nor did it possess a warm body temperature. His final relationship with it was merely familiarity.

Lin Yu had been very satisfied.

His thoughts gradually returned. As he stood there quietly spacing out, he suddenly heard a deep male voice, “Sweetie, I have to go to work now. Be a good boy and stay home, okay?”

“Your food is here. Rest if you get tired of playing. I ordered the new massager from Pet Tech. If you feel fatigued, call me in front of the monitor, okay? Owner will turn it on for you.”

“Good boy, let me give you a kiss.”

    “Mwah!!”

Following that was the sound of a loud kiss. The voice of the man in the room became slightly mournful. Lin Yu heard him grumbling, his tone seeming to tremble slightly, “It must be because I didn’t pet Rongrong that day. Otherwise, why would I have such bad luck to be chosen out of twenty people to report? Please, please, let the Tyrant be in a good mood today…”

“But Rick and the others say the King is never in a good mood.”

The oppressive force of the person he spoke of seemed too strong, and the man’s voice abruptly cut off. Lin Yu could almost picture him praying devoutly.

    “Heaven protect me.”

Lin Yu initially thought it was an affectionate couple, but then he heard a clear, young voice grumbling with a hint of dissatisfaction, “Always going out, out, out! So annoying!”

    “Can’t you stay with Rongrong?”

    Lin Yu: “…”

    Such deep affection.

After saying that, who could bear to leave?

Yet, he waited for a long time and didn’t hear the voice of the other occupant of the room until the door clicked shut.

    Lin Yu: “??”

So direct, so much pleading—and no comfort?

He suddenly felt a strange sense of disconnect.

However, he was in no position to comment on other people’s relationships when he couldn’t even protect himself.

Lin Yu quietly leaned against the wall, occasionally looking at the unfamiliar buildings outside, hoping that the next time he opened his eyes, he would be back in his previous world.

The facts proved that this was unrealistic.

He sighed and prepared to sit down.

But the wall behind him suddenly gave way, like leaning against an unlatched door. The sudden inertia forced Lin Yu to cover his head, and he fell heavily to the ground.

When he got up, seeing stars, he realized his cheek was brushing against a light, fluffy sensation, like willow catkins.

A white ball of fluff with bright black eyes was looking at him curiously.

    “Awoo.”

    “Whose Pet are you?”
