Chapter 6 006 Returning to the Shen Family

    “Shen Qing’an.”

Yuan Yanyu’s expression was ugly. It was the first time she had called her daughter by her full name. Her emotions were somewhat agitated, and the more she looked at her daughter’s cold, businesslike demeanor, the angrier she became.

She said, “Do you think I’m old, and that every decision I make, even who I invite home for dinner, needs your approval? I gave birth to you and raised you for twenty-six years, not so you could oppose me. Don’t use your business tactics on me. I didn’t fall for your father’s threats decades ago, and I certainly won’t fall for yours now.”

By the end of her speech, Yuan Yanyu’s voice carried a hint of disappointment. She couldn’t understand why her daughter was so wary of Chen Xiaonuan.

Shen Qing’an watched her mother grow increasingly agitated and heard the disappointment in her words. The retort that was on her lips was ultimately swallowed. She understood her mother’s personality—usually gentle and kind to others, but once she set her mind on something, eight horses couldn’t pull her back.

Especially after her father passed away a few years ago, her mother had become even more stubborn.

The deep sense of guilt towards her mother made it difficult for Shen Qing’an to forcefully defy her at this moment.

Shen Qing’an’s gaze fell once again on Chen Xiaonuan.

The girl in front of her kept her head down, knowing they were arguing over her, wishing she could shrink into herself. Her cheeks were flushed crimson, and her fingers unconsciously twisted the hem of her clothes. Her entire body conveyed a message of helplessness and a desire to escape.

A tense atmosphere permeated the hospital entrance.

Butler Xu, the two maids, and the driver had long since adopted a respectful, invisible stance, looking at the ground.

    Similarly, Shen Qing’an remained silent.

Pale golden sunlight shone on Shen Qing’an. Her features were exceptionally beautiful, but her lovely eyes always held a coldness when she looked at people.

Standing before her was her stubborn mother, and the other was a girl who looked terrified.

In the end, Shen Qing’an conceded.

“Since you insist,” Shen Qing’an’s voice returned to its usual calm, making it impossible to discern her emotions, “then let Miss Chen come along.”

After saying this, she stopped looking at anyone, turned, and walked toward her sports car, leaving only a faint instruction.

    “Butler Xu, make the arrangements.”

Yuan Yanyu’s expression brightened like the sun after the rain. She pulled Chen Xiaonuan’s hand. “There, there, Xiaonuan, come home with Auntie. Let’s not pay attention to that Iceberg Sister.”

Chen Xiaonuan was still in a state of shock. She was stunned by Miss Shen’s compromise, and her brain had almost stopped functioning. She was led dizzily by Yuan Yanyu toward the luxurious Bentley.

Butler Xu thoughtfully opened the rear car door.

As for Shen Qing’an, she was already in the driver’s seat of her sports car. The window was up, obscuring her expression.

The air conditioning inside the Bentley was ample, completely isolating them from the outside heat. The leather seats were incredibly soft, and a faint, clean fragrance permeated the air.

The car smoothly drove away from the hospital.

Yuan Yanyu was in high spirits, chattering away to Chen Xiaonuan.

Chen Xiaonuan responded obediently, her heart still racing, her palms sweaty. She secretly glanced out the window. The black sports car maintained a consistent, moderate distance behind their Bentley.

Was she really going to the Shen Family?

Anxiety, unease, a hint of secret joy, and an indescribable complex emotion toward Shen Qing’an intertwined in Chen Xiaonuan’s heart. She felt that something different was quietly changing.

The black Bentley and the sports car drove one after the other into the Shen Family Villa.

Butler Xu got out first and respectfully opened the car door.

Yuan Yanyu, supported by Chen Xiaonuan, stepped out and slowly walked up the steps in front of the villa entrance.

The afternoon sun was intense, shining on the sharp edges of the magnificent architecture, and reflecting the subtle, undeniable nervousness and unfamiliarity in Chen Xiaonuan’s eyes.

This was her first time stepping into a place like this. Chen Xiaonuan had only seen villas like the Shen Family’s in TV idol dramas.

The carved entrance door of the villa opened from the inside. A middle-aged woman in a neat uniform was already waiting, smiling kindly. “Madam.”

“Aunt Liu, we’re back.” Yuan Yanyu smiled in response, clearly in a good mood. She pulled Chen Xiaonuan’s hand and introduced her. “This is the girl I told you about who took care of me at the hospital, Chen Xiaonuan. She’s obedient and thoughtful.”

“Oh, what a good child. Miss Chen, please come in, please come in.” Aunt Liu quickly stepped aside, her eyes crinkling with a warm, maternal smile as she looked at Chen Xiaonuan.

The entryway was spacious and bright. The floor was made of dark, high-grade marble, and the cool air mixed with a faint, woody sandalwood scent wafted over them. The adjacent shoe cabinet was an embedded design, simple in line, exuding a sense of luxury.

Aunt Liu skillfully retrieved two pairs of soft indoor slippers: one was the soft-soled, embroidered pair Yuan Yanyu usually wore, and the other was a brand-new, comfortable-looking pair of women’s slippers, prepared for guests.

Yuan Yanyu put on her own shoes. Just as Aunt Liu was about to place the guest slippers at Chen Xiaonuan’s feet, she seemed to suddenly remember something and waved her hand at Aunt Liu. “No need for the new ones.”

Saying this, Yuan Yanyu turned to the shoe cabinet, opened one of the doors, and took out another pair of slippers from inside.

This pair of slippers was made of light gray sheepskin, simple in style without any unnecessary decoration, but the craftsmanship and texture immediately indicated they were not ordinary. The only unique detail was a tiny letter ‘S’ embroidered in silver thread on the inner side, indicating they were custom-made.

    “Xiaonuan, wear this pair.”

Yuan Yanyu handed the slippers to the slightly bewildered Chen Xiaonuan, her tone as casual as if she were commenting on the weather. “These are Qing’an’s slippers. She has several pairs. She’s the most particular; even her slippers have to be custom-made to ensure her feet aren’t uncomfortable.”

Chen Xiaonuan subconsciously took them. They felt incredibly soft in her hands.

Before Chen Xiaonuan could react, clear footsteps and a cool voice sounded from behind her.

    “Mom.”

Shen Qing’an walked in. She had just parked the car, and her cheeks still held a trace of the outdoor heat. When her gaze landed precisely on the light gray slippers in Chen Xiaonuan’s hand, her beautiful eyebrows furrowed slightly.

“Those are my slippers.” Her voice was neither loud nor soft, carrying a clear, unmistakable declaration of ownership, as if reminding an encroacher.

Chen Xiaonuan’s hand recoiled as if burned, and she nearly dropped the slippers.

Her cheeks instantly flushed crimson. She frantically tried to hand the slippers back. “I—I’m sorry, Miss Shen. I… I’ll wear the new ones…”

Yuan Yanyu, however, pressed down on Chen Xiaonuan’s hand and glared at Shen Qing’an in displeasure. “Why are you speaking so loudly? You’ve scared Xiaonuan. It’s just a pair of slippers, what’s the big deal? Don’t you have two other identical pairs? I told Xiaonuan to wear these. Your custom-designed slippers are more comfortable than the new guest ones.”

Shen Qing’an looked at her mother’s protective stance and then glanced at the timid Chen Xiaonuan, her lips pressed into a cold, straight line.

Clearly, she was extremely displeased that her mother had so casually assigned her private property to an outsider.

But facing her mother, who had just been discharged from the hospital, Shen Qing’an ultimately refrained from arguing.

Shen Qing’an remained silent for two seconds, then, with a hint of suppressed anger, she spat out, “Suit yourself.”

Without waiting for a reaction from the two women, Shen Qing’an quickly changed into another pair of gray slippers, though the style was slightly different, and walked straight past the entryway.

Her cold silhouette headed toward the living room.

Chen Xiaonuan froze in place, holding the slippers, unsure whether she should put them on.

“Don’t mind her, she just has that bad temper,” Yuan Yanyu patted Chen Xiaonuan’s hand reassuringly, completely disregarding her daughter’s mood. “Xiaonuan, hurry and put them on. These shoes are soft and comfortable.”

Under Yuan Yanyu’s encouraging gaze, Chen Xiaonuan took off her old running shoes and put on the slippers that belonged to Shen Qing’an. They were indeed very comfortable.

The sheepskin lining was incredibly soft, enveloping her feet, but… they were too big.

Her feet were about two sizes smaller than Shen Qing’an’s. The slippers felt a little loose, making a faint “pat-pat” sound when she walked.

She looked like a child secretly wearing adult shoes.

The sound was particularly clear in the silent, spacious entryway. Chen Xiaonuan felt a little embarrassed, but thinking that these were the slippers the Great Beauty had worn made her cheeks burn fiercely.

Yuan Yanyu was amused by her adorable appearance. “They are a bit big. It’s fine, just walk slowly, as long as they don’t fall off.”

Saying this, Yuan Yanyu affectionately pulled Chen Xiaonuan into the living room.

    Lunch was already prepared.

In the spacious dining room, the long table was set with exquisite tableware and delicious food. Every dish was meticulously prepared, colorful, fragrant, and flavorful—all carefully arranged to celebrate Yuan Yanyu’s discharge.

Shen Qing’an sat on one side of the head of the table, slowly unfolding her napkin, her expression still faint, as if the small incident in the entryway had never happened.

Yuan Yanyu sat at the head of the table and enthusiastically invited Chen Xiaonuan to sit next to her, directly across from Shen Qing’an.

Chen Xiaonuan ate this meal with little appetite.

The dishes were exquisite, unlike anything she had ever tasted, but most of Chen Xiaonuan’s attention was drawn by the faint, cool gaze from across the table.

Chen Xiaonuan could clearly feel Shen Qing’an’s eyes occasionally sweeping over the slippers that were two sizes too big on her feet. This made Chen Xiaonuan feel like she was sitting on pins and needles. The blush on her cheeks never faded, and she could only try to tuck her feet under the chair.

    It was truly too strange.

Yuan Yanyu was in high spirits, constantly putting food on Chen Xiaonuan’s plate and asking about her well-being.

“Xiaonuan,” halfway through the meal, Yuan Yanyu put down her spoon, as if suddenly remembering something, and spoke gently, “You’ve been busy all day, you must be tired. Don’t rush back after dinner. Stay the night here, and I’ll have the driver take you home tomorrow.”

Yuan Yanyu asked, “How does that sound?”

Before Chen Xiaonuan could respond, Shen Qing’an immediately called out, “Mom.”

What was going on? Her mother seemed to be pushing her luck.

Shen Qing’an frowned. She had a feeling she was falling into a trap.

    “You be quiet, don’t speak.”

    Shen Qing’an: “…”

    Fine, she would endure it.
