    Chapter 22: 022 “Please, Sister~”

The dormitory was a quad room with beds on top and desks underneath. The washroom had a huge mirror, a washing machine, a separate toilet, and a separate shower room. It wasn’t huge, but it was much more complete than dorms at other universities.

Shen Qing’an’s brows furrowed slightly, clearly dissatisfied with the dormitory environment.

When she was in college, she lived in a fully equipped single dorm, and by sophomore year, she had moved directly into a detached apartment near the school. She couldn’t imagine how Chen Xiaonuan would live in this cramped four-person space.

Chen Xiaonuan opened her suitcase, took out the mattress and thin blanket on top, and started making her bed.

After a summer break, the bed board had accumulated a lot of dust and was quite dirty.

Chen Xiaonuan immediately found a stack of English newspapers from her drawer—all from the previous semester, which she hadn’t looked at much—and planned to use them to cover the bed board.

Shen Qing’an’s gaze fell on the thin mattress and the blanket that clearly wouldn’t provide much warmth. The displeasure in her eyes intensified.

She walked over, pressed the hard bed board with her finger, and her tone was stiff: “You’re going to sleep on this?”

Chen Xiaonuan was putting luggage into her wardrobe with Liu Qian. Hearing this, she looked up at Shen Qing’an with a bewildered expression: “Yes, what’s wrong, Sister? The bed board is a bit hard, but you get used to it. Sleeping on a hard board is good for your health!”

Shen Qing’an narrowed her eyes, said nothing, but turned and walked out of the dorm to make a phone call.

“Wow, Xiaonuan, your sister looks really fierce,” Liu Qian whispered to Chen Xiaonuan while Shen Qing’an was outside.

Chen Xiaonuan paused her folding, glanced at Shen Qing’an standing in the hallway, and lowered her voice as well: “Not really, maybe she just has a cold face. My sister usually keeps a cold expression. Don’t let the cold aura she sometimes gives off fool you; she treats people very well.”

“She’s an Iceberg Sister who is beautiful and kind-hearted. Don’t worry that she has an issue with you; she really doesn’t think that way.”

Liu Qian: “Is… is that so?”

Don’t put such a thick filter on your sister! That Great Beauty’s eyes looked like they wanted to skin her alive. Fortunately, it was a society governed by law, which guaranteed her personal safety.

Chen Xiaonuan nodded quickly: “It is. Sister is so good to me.”

As she spoke, Chen Xiaonuan rummaged through her belongings and found another unused towel. She ran to the sink to wash it clean, intending to use it as a rag.

Shen Qing’an finished her call and walked in, seeing Chen Xiaonuan diligently wiping the desk, like a hardworking little gardener. She took a deep breath, suppressing her emotions.

She said in a deep voice, “Stop cleaning.”

“Huh?” Chen Xiaonuan, who was wiping the desk, froze and turned to look at Shen Qing’an, her eyes full of confusion.

“I’ve arranged for someone to come and clean for you. The mattress is too thin; I’ll replace it with a new, soft one.” Shen Qing’an’s voice was gentle. Her eyes fell on Chen Xiaonuan’s slightly dirty face. She stepped forward, pulled out a tissue, gently wiped the dirt away, and casually crumpled the tissue into a ball, tossing it into the trash bin.

    “Now, let’s go eat first.”

Liu Qian, standing next to the two, thought: “?”

She felt the atmosphere was strange. Something wasn’t right.

Speaking of which, this Great Beauty was so affectionate towards Xiaonuan that she personally wiped her face. It seemed Xiaonuan was right; she was very good to her.

Chen Xiaonuan asked, “Sister, are you hungry?”

Shen Qing’an lowered her gaze and, following Chen Xiaonuan’s implication, gave an expressionless ‘mm,’ acknowledging that she was hungry.

“Oh, then let’s go eat right now!” Chen Xiaonuan took her seriously, believing Shen Qing’an was truly starving. She immediately dropped the rag and pulled Liu Qian to wash her hands.

Chen Xiaonuan spoke like a little rich woman: “Come on, let’s all three of us go. It’s the first meal of the semester; my treat. I have… uh, a little money now.”

She almost let slip that her mother gave her a card for the semester, and her sister transferred her 200,000 yuan via WeChat. Luckily, she stopped herself in time. She wasn’t stupid and knew not to flaunt wealth, but the slight smugness on Chen Xiaonuan’s face was impossible to hide.

Seeing her like this, a smile touched Shen Qing’an’s eyes.

When Liu Qian heard there was good food, and it was her good friend treating, she forgot everything else, completely casting her fear of Shen Qing’an to the back of her mind.

She linked arms with Chen Xiaonuan and happily said, “Great, we must go. The first meal of the semester! I am honored to have Comrade Xiao Chen bleed money to treat me to a feast.”

The two girls excitedly planned which restaurant to go to and what to eat.

Shen Qing’an listened to their conversation, which ignored her presence. Especially when she heard Chen Xiaonuan was bringing this other girl along for the meal, her expression instantly darkened.

When they set off, Chen Xiaonuan had been thinking about having a meal alone with her.

Shen Qing’an didn’t even wait for Chen Xiaonuan to mention the location of the meal. She turned around and walked out of the dorm door without a word. Her high heels clicked clearly on the marble floor of the hallway, the sound faintly carrying a hint of anger.

Chen Xiaonuan and Liu Qian exchanged glances.

“What’s wrong with Sister?” Chen Xiaonuan asked, feeling a little uneasy.

Liu Qian shook her head. If her close friend didn’t know, there was no way she would.

She guessed, “Maybe she’s… not in a good mood?”

Chen Xiaonuan didn’t think too much of it and quickly pulled Liu Qian to chase after her. She called out behind Shen Qing’an, “Sister, wait for us.”

A rather eye-catching and strange scene appeared at Yunjing University: a tall, cold-tempered beauty with a displeased expression walked in the lead, her pace quick, radiating an aura that warned people to keep away. Trailing closely behind her were two younger girls. One tried to keep up with the person in front, while the other followed timidly beside her. The two chatted softly, forming a stark contrast to the state of the Great Beauty ahead.

It was a very beautiful sight, causing many people to stop and look, and some even secretly took photos with their phones.

“Xiaonuan, your sister doesn’t seem very happy about us eating together?” Liu Qian observed Shen Qing’an’s back and whispered.

“No way,” Chen Xiaonuan said, slightly unconvinced. “I told Sister before I came to school, and she agreed perfectly. Maybe she’s hungry and in a bad mood. She sometimes gets like this; it must be a common ailment for cold beauties.”

Liu Qian was skeptical: “I think so too. I heard that Great Beauties usually have a bit of a temper. But if you’re beautiful, it’s fine to be willful.”

Walking ahead, Shen Qing’an heard the sporadic laughter behind her, and the irritation in her heart intensified. The sour feeling was almost overflowing.

This first day of school seemed to have deviated from Shen Qing’an’s expected trajectory from the very beginning.

“Sister, Sister, it’s the shop behind you, you walked past it!” Seeing that Shen Qing’an was about to continue walking, Chen Xiaonuan quickly called out to stop her.

Shen Qing’an paused and turned around.

She saw Chen Xiaonuan standing in front of a slightly dilapidated small restaurant. The restaurant was unremarkable, completely inconspicuous among the surrounding street shops.

The storefront was small, and the characters on the sign, “Yang Ji Braised Chicken,” were somewhat faded. Through the glass window, one could see about ten greasy dining tables crowded inside. It wasn’t mealtime, and it was the first day of school, so only seven or eight students were sparsely seated inside.

A rich aroma permeated the air.

    Shen Qing’an’s brows furrowed.

Could the hygiene conditions of a place like this meet standards? Would the kitchen be dirty and messy, with cockroaches crawling everywhere? Would the tableware be uniformly sterilized?

She felt her years of cultivated cleanliness obsession were setting off alarms in her mind.

“Sister, hurry and come in. The food here is really good, and the prices are super affordable.” As if guessing Shen Qing’an’s thoughts, Chen Xiaonuan didn’t give her a chance to hesitate. She pushed open the glass door and pulled Shen Qing’an’s wrist, leading her inside.

The warm touch on her wrist made Shen Qing’an lose herself, and she was almost half-coaxed into following.

The air conditioning was on inside. Pushing open the glass door, a cool breeze greeted them, instantly cutting off the summer heat outside. The space inside was not large, especially since it was filled with dining tables, and the noise was loud. The air was mixed with the tempting aroma of simmering food, as if trying to lure out the gluttonous worms in one’s stomach.

Chen Xiaonuan was quick, finding a wall seat close to the air conditioner, and urged Shen Qing’an and Liu Qian to sit down quickly.

“There are a few other braised chicken places nearby, but this one is the best; it’s definitely not pre-made food.” Chen Xiaonuan skillfully took out her phone, opened WeChat, scanned the QR code on the table, and showed it to Shen Qing’an like a treasure: “Sister, what do you want to eat? I like braised pork ribs the most. Why don’t you order a serving too?”

“But their chili is very spicy. Sister can’t handle spice, so I’ll order mild for you, and I’ll have medium.”

Shen Qing’an stood by the table, looking down at the greasy tabletop and the seemingly unclean high plastic stools. Her tightly furrowed brow never relaxed.

She regretted agreeing to eat near the school with Chen Xiaonuan.

If she had known the restaurant’s hygiene environment was substandard, she would have arranged for a private chef long ago.

“Sister, are you going to eat the braised pork ribs?” Chen Xiaonuan’s inquiry came again.

Shen Qing’an gave a faint ‘mm,’ agreeing to Chen Xiaonuan’s suggestion, but her body seemed nailed to the spot, showing no intention of sitting down.

With this action, Chen Xiaonuan immediately understood the problem.

Her sister’s germaphobia had flared up.

Chen Xiaonuan was secretly laughing. Her sister must be particularly conflicted right now, wanting to eat with her but not wanting to stay in a dirty little restaurant.

Chen Xiaonuan quickly pulled out a stack of napkins, first meticulously wiping the tabletop in front of Shen Qing’an several times until the paper was clean. Then, she bent down and wiped the plastic stool until it shone.

Having done all this, Chen Xiaonuan looked up, her eyes moist, with a slightly coquettish smile. Her voice was soft: “Sister, look, I’ve wiped it all clean. Hurry and sit down. All the small restaurants near the school are like this; don’t dislike it.”

“Please, the food tastes really great. Just eat with me this once, okay, Sister~” Chen Xiaonuan shook Shen Qing’an’s hand, looking pitiful, much like a cute puppy begging its owner for a head scratch.

That drawn-out ‘Sister’ was like a thin, soft feather, gently tickling Shen Qing’an’s heart.

It felt as if Chen Xiaonuan would cry in front of her if she didn’t agree.

Shen Qing’an took a deep breath, forcefully suppressed her inner resistance, and sat down in compromise.

The moment she sat down, Chen Xiaonuan beamed, sticking to her like a piece of taffy, rubbing her arm against hers, and saying cheerfully, “Sister~ I knew you were the best.”

Shen Qing’an scoffed, her tense body relaxing considerably.

Liu Qian, sitting across from the two, took all of this in, her mind screaming: ???

Something was wrong, truly wrong! Why was Xiaonuan’s way of interacting with her sister so strange? As for what was strange, Liu Qian couldn’t quite pinpoint it.

Forget it. Xiaonuan was both timid and obedient in front of this sister, and she even knew how to act spoiled. The Great Beauty seemed to fall for it. Perhaps a goddess-like beauty always had her own ideas and unique qualities that mere mortals like her couldn’t understand.

Liu Qian silently lowered her head, pretending to study the menu on her phone.
