Chapter 14: Horror Movie

At night, after washing up, Gu Yuwei and Qin Qing curled up on the sofa to watch a movie. The lights in the room were turned off, and the sounds of ghosts wailing and wolves howling drifted from the horror film on the screen. Gu Yuwei turned her head to look at Qin Qing, who was munching on potato chips and watching with great interest. Everything felt just like the time when she still lived at Qin Qing’s house.

Back then, Qin Qing often couldn’t sleep in the middle of the night and would get up to watch movies, specifically horror movies. Once, Gu Yuwei, who was sleeping in Qin An’an’s room, had bumped into her when getting up during the night, only to find that the woman had already fallen asleep on the sofa.

Does Teacher Qin not feel afraid? Watching horror movies in the middle of the night as a sleep aid. This was what Gu Yuwei had asked Qin Qing the next day.

They are all fake, there is nothing to be afraid of. Is Xiao Wei scared? Qin Qing had replied dismissively. She felt no fear toward horror movies and would even burst out laughing while watching them. She remembered how she used to be pummeled by her cowardly roommates for watching horror films in their university dorm.

Gu Yuwei lowered her head and paused for a moment. I am okay.

Pulling her thoughts back to the present, Gu Yuwei looked at the images on the television, unable to feel any emotion at all. She shifted her body, moving a bit closer to Qin Qing. The faint fragrance lingering on Qin Qing made Gu Yuwei feel a sense of joy. Gu Yuwei lowered her head, suddenly grabbed Qin Qing’s hand, and buried her head in her embrace.

Xiao Wei? Qin Qing was startled by Gu Yuwei’s sudden movement. Looking down, she saw the young girl clutching her tightly. Qin Qing smiled and reached out to wrap her arms around the girl. If Xiao Wei is scared, we won’t watch it anymore. Qin Qing reached for the remote control.

No, that is not it. Seeing that Qin Qing was about to change the channel, Gu Yuwei hurriedly reached out to grab the remote. Teacher Qin, I am not afraid. Gu Yuwei held the remote firmly in her own hand.

If you are not afraid, why are you holding me so tightly? Qin Qing arched an eyebrow, but she smiled and pulled Gu Yuwei even closer. Hidden in Qin Qing’s arms, Gu Yuwei’s eyes sparkled, and a smile played at the corners of her mouth.

The movie gradually reached its climax. Gu Yuwei watched the female ghost crawling and shrieking from the bottom of a well without even blinking. The doorbell suddenly rang at that moment, giving Qin Qing a fright. Gu Yuwei stood up, suppressing a smile as she looked at Qin Qing, then turned to switch on the living room light and looked through the peephole.

It was a woman wearing a long dress, appearing to be around the same age as Qin Qing. Gu Yuwei had never seen this person before. She turned around just as Qin Qing walked over. Who is it? Qin Qing asked instinctively, only to realize how silly she sounded after the words left her mouth. How could Xiao Wei possibly know her?

Gu Yuwei shook her head and stepped back behind Qin Qing. Qin Qing looked through the peephole, but the moment she saw the visitor, her body involuntarily stiffened. Gu Yuwei caught Qin Qing’s reaction. The doorbell rang again. Qin Qing frowned, took two steps back, and opened the door.

When the woman outside saw Qin Qing, her previously dejected face instantly turned into one of joy. She stepped forward and threw herself onto Qin Qing. Qin Qing! I didn’t expect you to actually be here.

Gu Yuwei looked at the woman, feeling a sense of irritation in her heart, though she remained obediently silent.

Qin Qing pushed the woman out of her embrace. Cai Yun, you… Qin Qing had intended to ask how Cai Yun found this place, but then she remembered that Qin An’an knew her. Cai Yun was a high school classmate. As for what kind of classmate she was, Qin Qing still hadn’t figured out what she truly thought of her.

But without a doubt, Cai Yun considered her a friend—a very good friend, and nothing more.

Cai Yun noticed Gu Yuwei behind Qin Qing, and the expression on her face shifted slightly. She then smiled and said, What, am I not welcome? We haven’t seen each other for so long, yet you didn’t even tell me when you came back. If I hadn’t asked An’an…

Gu Yuwei’s gaze darkened. She looked away from Cai Yun and reached out to tug at the corner of Qin Qing’s clothes. Qin Qing turned her head, her expression returning to its usual gentleness. Xiao Wei, this is Cai Yun, a high school classmate. After she spoke, Cai Yun’s expression stiffened almost imperceptibly. And this is? Cai Yun asked Qin Qing, her gaze sizing up Gu Yuwei.

This is Gu Yuwei, she is my… student. Qin Qing paused, perhaps thinking for a moment, before finally speaking the words.

The three of them entered the living room and sat on the sofa. Cai Yun looked at Gu Yuwei and smiled. Qin Qing, I couldn’t tell, but your teacher-student relationship is unusually close. Qin Qing’s brow furrowed slightly at the comment. Gu Yuwei looked at Qin Qing and then lowered her head in silence. Cai Yun smiled and dropped the subject, shifting the conversation as she sat next to Qin Qing and took her arm, complaining, Xiao Qing, can I stay here with you for one night?

Gu Yuwei pursed her lips. Qin Qing looked at Cai Yun. There are only two rooms in the house. If you don’t go back, will he be worried?

The “he” naturally referred to Cai Yun’s boyfriend—or more accurately, her fiancé now.

Oh, don’t even mention him. It’s annoying just thinking about him. We had a fight, Cai Yun grumbled.

Qin Qing thought for a moment, turned to look at Gu Yuwei, and then looked back. It is possible, but you will sleep in the room An’an usually uses tonight. Xiao Wei will sleep with me.

Gu Yuwei was stunned. Before she could react, Cai Yun spoke up. Ah~ why can’t I sleep with Xiao Qing?

Qin Qing paused, her frown deepening. Seeing this, Cai Yun didn’t ask further, but when her eyes met Gu Yuwei’s, they carried an increasingly inquisitive look.

Lying in bed, Gu Yuwei found herself unable to sleep. She had never slept in the same bed as Qin Qing before; during that previous period, she had only stayed in Qin An’an’s room. Qin Qing turned to face Gu Yuwei; she wasn’t sleepy either. Cai Yun’s sudden arrival was something she hadn’t expected. Aside from Qin An’an’s family, she hadn’t mentioned her return to Linqi County to any of her former classmates.

Can’t sleep? Qin Qing reached out to brush the stray hairs from Gu Yuwei’s forehead.

Gu Yuwei nodded. Teacher Qin can’t sleep either? Qin Qing didn’t answer, but simply smiled and moved closer to the girl, pulling her into her arms. Smelling the familiar and pleasant scent surrounding Qin Qing, Gu Yuwei closed her eyes in peace.

The next morning, when Qin Qing woke up, Cai Yun was already gone. Gu Yuwei didn’t know what had happened but didn’t ask. While the two were eating breakfast, the doorbell rang again. Gu Yuwei glanced at Qin Qing. Qin Qing stood up and headed for the door, with Gu Yuwei following behind her.

A man was standing outside. Qin Qing had only seen photos of this person with Cai Yun; there was no doubt who he was.

The man was slightly taken down when he saw Qin Qing. He had never met her before and had only found this place by looking through Cai Yun’s phone. His expression was very poor, and looking at Qin Qing, it felt as if he might start a fight at any second. The man asked, You are Qin Qing. It wasn’t a question, but a statement.

Qin Qing nodded. If you are looking for Cai Yun, she has already left. Qin Qing had no desire to get involved in their business. The man was someone Cai Yun had started dating in university. During university, Qin Qing and Cai Yun were not at the same school, and she only saw news about Cai Yun on her social media feed. After high school graduation, their contact had grown increasingly sparse.

The man glanced into the house as if he hadn’t quite given up, but then he caught sight of Gu Yuwei walking over. He paused for a moment, his eyes turning even colder. She left in a hurry last night and didn’t take her phone. Since she isn’t here, I won’t disturb you.

Qin Qing nodded, her expression also turning cold. After the man left, Qin Qing closed the door. She didn’t care where the man eventually found Cai Yun, but not long after that, she received a wedding invitation from her. Qin Qing did not go to the wedding. If asked why, she didn’t really know. Perhaps it was because she had associated Cai Yun with her own realization of her sexual orientation in university, or perhaps she simply disliked the man’s attitude toward her.

But none of that mattered anymore.

After the National Day holiday, Gu Yuwei went to school as usual. The days passed one by one, but Sun Songxin’s gaze toward Gu Yuwei became increasingly strange. One evening, Gu Yuwei was in her room doing homework. Gu Jiang and his wife had not yet returned. The only sound in the quiet room was the scratching of Gu Yuwei’s pen. Suddenly, the door was pushed open, and the silhouette of a youth was cast into the room by the living room light.

Hearing the noise, Gu Yuwei turned around. Although she felt very uncomfortable, she patiently greeted the visitor. Cousin? Is something the matter? Sun Songxin looked at Gu Yuwei, his steps hesitating before he finally entered the room. He stood by her desk, his eyes fixed on the notebook. I just wanted to ask if Xiao Wei is hungry.

Sun Songxin fixed his gaze on Gu Yuwei’s face, placing his hand on the desk. Gu Yuwei said, I am okay. The two stood in silence. Sun Songxin looked at Gu Yuwei, hesitating repeatedly before he suddenly grabbed her hand resting on the desk. Xiao Wei, I…

Gu Yuwei was startled by the sudden touch. The youth’s hot body temperature disgusted her. She pulled her hand away from his grip, her eyes darkening as she stood up and walked toward the door. If Cousin has nothing else to say, I still have homework to finish.

The blunt dismissal caused Sun Songxin’s heart to sink, but it did not extinguish the wicked fire in his heart. Sun Songxin walked to the door. Gu Yuwei thought he had listened to her and was leaving, but unexpectedly, he reached out and grabbed her, pushing her toward the bed. Gu Yuwei’s heart skipped a beat, but she couldn’t withstand the boy’s strength. He covered her mouth with one hand while the other tugged at his own trousers. Xiao Wei, Xiao Wei, I like you… Xiao Wei, just once, just once. I can’t hold back anymore. I’ve wanted you for so long, Xiao Wei…

The youth’s heavy, ragged breath hit Gu Yuwei’s face. She struggled to get away, but she simply couldn’t overcome his weight. Gu Yuwei reached out to grab the desk lamp on the nightstand, but the boy pulled her hand back. Xiao Wei, be good, I’ll treat you well. He laughed wildly.

Gu Yuwei’s eyes filled with tears. As the boy leaned down to press against her, she took advantage of a moment of laxity and bit down hard on his hand. He pulled away in pain, and Gu Yuwei raised her right leg, kicking him squarely in the groin. The boy’s face instantly turned ashen, and he collapsed by the bed with a groan. Seeing that she had broken free, Gu Yuwei scrambled off the bed and ran out.

At that moment, the door lock turned. Gu Jiang and Sun Ming entered, startled to see Gu Yuwei with her eyes red and brimming with tears. Gu Jiang stepped forward and took her hand, asking with concern, Xiao Wei, what’s wrong? What happened?

Gu Yuwei glanced back at her room, then bit her lip and shook her head. Aunt, I’m fine. I just fell asleep and had a nightmare. Hearing this, Gu Jiang pulled her into a distressed embrace, gently comforting her.
