Chapter 18 The bonds of family and the farewell sign of the soul

As the days passed, A Zhi’s life gradually got on the right track.

He is still busy with work every day, still volunteers at the foundation every week, and still visits Qi’s mother often.Qi’s mother also became more and more dependent on him, often cooking his favorite meals and waiting for him to come. The relationship between the two has long gone beyond that of an ordinary mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and is more like a mother and son who depend on each other for life.

It was the weekend, and Ah Zhi came to Qi’s mother’s house carrying fresh fruits and vegetables. As soon as I walked in, I smelled a strong aroma of food.

“Auntie, I’m here.” Azhi said with a smile.

Qi’s mother walked out of the kitchen with a kind smile on her face: “Azhi is here, sit down quickly. The food will be ready soon. I made your favorite braised pork today.”

“Thank you, Auntie.” Azhi put down his things and walked into the kitchen to help.

The kitchen was steaming, and Qi’s mother was stir-frying braised pork, and the aroma was fragrant.Ah Zhi looked at her busy figure and felt a warm current in his heart – this was the first time he felt the warmth of home after losing Qi.

“Auntie, don’t be too tired.” Azhi took the spatula from her hand, “I’ll fry it, you go and take a rest.”

Qi’s mother smiled and nodded, walked to the living room, looked at Qi’s photo on the wall, her eyes full of longing.

Ah Zhi is frying braised pork with skillful movements. In the past, Mr. Qi liked to watch him cook and said that the braised pork he cooked was the most delicious in the world. At that time, he thought Qi was nagging, but now that he thinks about it, it was such a precious time.

After the meal was ready, the two sat at the dining table and chatted while eating.

“Azhi, you have lost a lot of weight recently. You should eat more.” Qi’s mother put a piece of braised pork into his bowl. “No matter how busy you are at work, you must pay attention to your health. Xiao Qi has a spirit in heaven, and I don’t want to see you like this.”

Azhi nodded, his eyes slightly red: “I know, Auntie. I will take good care of myself.”

“That’s good.” Qi’s mother sighed, “Xiao Qi is gone. I originally thought that I would be alone for the rest of my life. Fortunately, I have you, Ah Zhi. Thank you for always staying with me and taking care of me.”

“Auntie, don’t say that.” Ah Zhi put down his chopsticks and held her hand, “It’s my duty to take care of you. When Xiao Qi is gone, I will be your son. From now on, I will always be with you and take care of you until you die.”

Tears burst out of Qi’s mother’s eyes. She held Ah Zhi’s hand tightly and choked with sobs: “Good boy, good boy… Xiao Qi didn’t see the wrong person…”

The two just held each other’s hands, tears falling silently. The smell of cedar in the living room lingered around them, as if Qi was also moved by this family affection.

After eating, Ah Zhi sat with Qi’s mother in the living room and watched TV.Qi’s mother leaned on the sofa and gradually fell asleep.Ah Zhi gently covered her with a blanket, then sat aside, looking at Qi’s photo on the wall, his heart filled with longing.

“Qi,” he whispered into the void, “Look, Auntie is fine now. I will take good care of her, you don’t have to worry.”

The scent of cedar came closer, and Qi’s voice came softly, but with a trace of imperceptible fatigue: “Well… thank you… Ah Zhi…”

Ah Zhi’s heart skipped a beat.Qi’s voice was weaker than ever, as if it would disappear at any time.

He frowned and stretched out his hand, trying to grasp the void beside him: “Qi, what’s wrong with you? Are you feeling uncomfortable?”

    “It’s okay…” Qi’s voice contained a forced smile, “I’m just…a little tired…”

A strong uneasiness surged in Ah Zhi’s heart. He remembered that he had heard someone say before that the soul stranded in the world would one day leave because of the dissipation of obsession. Is Qi’s obsession about to dissipate?

“Qi, don’t leave me.” There was a hint of panic in his voice, and he hugged Void tightly beside him, “You promised me that you would always stay with me. You can’t keep your word.”

The scent of cedar wrapped around him gently, as if Qi was gently comforting him.”Azhi… don’t be afraid…” Qi’s voice was choked, “I… just… want to go to a place… far away…”

“Where is that far away place?” Azhi’s voice trembled, “Can I go with you?”

“Can’t…” Qi’s voice was full of reluctance, “Azhi… you have to live well… with my love… live well…”

“I don’t want it!” Ah Zhi burst into tears, “I just want you! Qi, I just want you! Don’t leave, okay?”

Qi’s mother was awakened by his crying. She opened her eyes and saw Ah Zhi holding Xukong crying bitterly, and she understood something in her heart instantly. She walked up to Ah Zhi, patted his back gently, and said with sobs: “Azhi, don’t be sad. Xiao Qi… he just went to a place without pain. He will look at us in the sky and watch us live well.”

Azhi leaned in Qi’s mother’s arms and cried like a child. He knew that Qi’s soul was about to leave.

Late at night, Azhi returned to the villa. He sat on the sofa in the living room, the smell of cedar still lingering around him, but it was lighter than ever.

“Qi,” he said softly, “are you leaving?”

There was silence in the air for a long time before Qi’s weak voice came: “Yes…Azhi…I’m leaving…”

Ah Zhi’s tears burst out instantly. He stretched out his hand and hugged the void beside him tightly, as if he was hugging Qi’s last breath.

“Qi, I can’t bear to leave you.” He choked, “What would I do without you?”

“Azhi…” Qi’s voice had a hint of tenderness, “I can’t bear to leave you either…but…I have to go…”

He paused and continued: “Promise me… take good care of yourself… take good care of your aunt… live well… find someone… who loves you… and live your whole life…”

“I don’t want anyone else, I just want you.” Ah Zhi’s voice was full of despair.

“Fool…” Qi’s voice contained a hint of smile, but also a deep sense of reluctance, “I will be in heaven…watching you…protecting you…you want to be happy…”

The smell of cedar is getting weaker and weaker, as if it will disappear at any time.

Azhi knew that Qi was leaving. He used all his strength to hug the void around him, as if he wanted to retain Qi’s last breath.

“Qi, I love you.” He choked and said over and over again, “I love you, I will love you forever.”

    “I love you too…Azhi…forever…”

Qi’s voice became weaker and weaker, and finally disappeared completely into the air.

The smell of cedar around me also gradually disappeared.

Ah Zhi hugged Vukong, collapsed on the sofa, and cried bitterly. He knew that Qi was gone, really gone this time.

The distance of three meters is finally no longer a fetter, but an eternal gap.

There was silence in the living room, except for Ah Zhi’s cry and the sound of the wind outside the window.

He knew that Qi was gone, but Qi’s love would always stay in his heart and accompany him through every day and night in the future.

He will live well with Qi’s love and fulfill all his promises to Qi until the end of his life.
