    Chapter 90

When Liang Jian rushed to the hospital, the rain outside had not stopped yet.

At the end of November, the late autumn rains came and went, and the sycamore trees on both sides of the road were covered with dead leaves, which made a crisp cracking sound when stepped on.

There was a slight trace of water on the toe of the shoe. As soon as Liang Ji’an pushed open the door of the ward, the original slight crying and sobbing stopped abruptly, and another voice of coaxing also stopped. Instead, there were two eyes looking at him at the same time. The eyes were so enthusiastic that they were exactly the same, as if he was some kind of savior who suddenly came.

Before He Wen could say anything, Shen Lingjun held on to the edge of the bed and jumped down quickly and rushed towards Liang Ji’an. Fresh tears were rolling on the wet tear stains. You can imagine how hard he cried during this period.

Twelve-year-old Liang Ji’an put down the schoolbag in his hand. He had just entered puberty and had grown as tall as a strip. Holding four-year-old Shen Lingjun was like holding a doll. As soon as the child entered his arms, he hugged his neck tightly and refused to let go. Tears and snot were everywhere, all rubbing against his shoulders. He still sobbed and said intermittently: “I don’t want an injection, brother, I don’t want an injection…”

He Wen stood aside with his hands down. He had been a housekeeper for more than ten years, and he rarely felt so helpless.

It’s not because the young master is naughty and difficult to control. On the contrary, when a beautiful and well-behaved child throws a tantrum when he is sick, he will not be dissatisfied at all except for making people feel distressed. But there is also nothing he can do about it, because Shen Lingjun is not even crying heartbreakingly, but just sits there quietly and sheds tears, hiding his hands tightly behind his back and refusing to take the injection.

No matter whether he came to persuade him or the doctor came to persuade him, he would only look at the other person with his big eyes and repeat that he wanted to see his brother.

For such a child, especially when he has clearly made a request that is not difficult to meet, it would be a bit unhumane to force his hand to be given an injection.

    And it is very unbearable.

Shen Lingjun curled up like a tortoise and lay in Liang Ji’an’s arms. His body temperature was very high, and his illness and non-stop crying had consumed most of his energy. Liang Ji’an patted his back and coaxed: “When Uncle He called me, he said that you would only get the injection if I was with you.”

“Why did you change your mind as soon as I came?”

Shen Lingjun almost fainted from crying, and raised his face pitifully, “I want to go home.”

“You can’t go home.” Liang Ji’an carried him back to the hospital bed and signaled He Wen to call the doctor. He turned Shen Lingjun in his arms and let him lean on his side. “You have a fever. If you don’t get an injection, you will never be able to watch cartoons again.”

Shen Lingjun’s burnt brain couldn’t figure out whether it was scarier to have an injection or to never watch cartoons again, but at least he didn’t resist anymore. The doctor bent down and motioned for him to stretch out his hand. He glanced at Liang Jian and whispered: “Then can I go home after the injection?”

“Yes.” Liang Ji’an responded, protecting his head in his arms to signal him not to watch the injection process. The doctor moved quickly, expertly inserted the needle into him and adjusted the speed of the infusion. Finally, he gave him a lollipop as a compliment.

Shen Lingjun’s face was pressed against Liang Ji’an’s school uniform, leaving very obvious tear stains on the gray vest.

Liang Ji’an stared at his crying face and frowned slightly. He Wen handed over a warm towel at the right time. Liang Ji’an protected Shen Lingjun’s body with one hand to prevent him from sliding off her body, and used the towel with one hand to wipe away his tears. Shen Lingjun lowered his wet eyelashes and twitched to calm down the intense crying.

Then he lifted the unopened lollipop and handed it to Liang Jian, probably wanting him to open it for himself.

Liang Ji’an had a cold face, changed to a softer towel to wipe his entire face, and refused: “You can’t eat sweets.”

“Shen Lingjun, it’s wrong to come to the hospital when you’re sick and not get a proper injection. It’s wrong to keep crying for your brother.”

“No matter if I can’t make it through, you still have to get the injection. Do you understand?”

Shen Lingjun curled his lips, as if he was about to cry again, but he held it back and explained in a low voice: “I didn’t ask for candy… I want to give you something to eat, brother.”

Liang Jian was choked inexplicably and was speechless for a moment. After a while, he said, “I’m holding you now, so it’s not convenient for me to eat sweets.”

Shen Lingjun turned around and handed the candy to He Wen.

He Wen hesitantly took the lollipop under Liang Ji’an’s judgmental eyes. He was not sure whether Shen Lingjun wanted to share the candy with him, but fortunately Shen Lingjun quickly said: “Uncle, can you save it for me first? He will eat it after my brother finishes hugging me.”

Then he took out another chocolate from his pocket and put it into He Wen’s hand, “Thank you, uncle.”

Liang Jian waited for him to finish sharing and immediately said: “Don’t move around, otherwise the needle will slip.”

Shen Lingjun tilted her head and leaned in his arms, and as expected, she obediently stopped moving.

He Wen took out the bottle of baby cream that Shen Lingjun often used from the care bag he carried with him. Liang Ji’an put some on his forehead and cheeks with his fingertips, and gently rubbed it for him with his palms. Shen Lingjun’s small face was wrinkled by the rubbing, but his amber eyes stared at Liang Ji’an motionless, grinning like a little fool and not knowing what he was enjoying.

It didn’t take long before I fell asleep.

He had a fever and was not very comfortable to begin with, nor did he sleep very peacefully. Liang Ji’an was afraid that he would be uncomfortable sleeping in his arms, so he wanted to put him back on the bed. Shen Lingjun would wake up in a daze at the slightest movement, but in the end he just kept holding him.

He Wen sighed in relief after realizing it.

Liang Ji’an pushed aside Shen Lingjun’s sweaty forehead and put a new fever-reducing patch on it. His voice was very soft, but his tone was the same as usual, cold and straight as always, “Why did you call me after so long?”

He Wen was stunned for a moment and said, “You should be taking shooting lessons at that time.”

Liang Jian glanced at him and said, “Are you afraid that you can’t get through to me?”

“Or do you think his crying is insignificant and you don’t need to tell me?”

He is still young, but he is very coercive. He doesn’t know whose temper he follows. It is rare for him to be like this in the entire Liang family. His father’s generation is always a little childish at his age, but Liang Jian does not have a trace of childishness or innocence that belongs to his age. Most things in the outside world cannot have any appeal to him. He will only quickly select things that can be used for him.

His parents are not often around him, and the emotional contact during family reunions every year is only superficial. But even though they spend very little time together, Liang Ji’an’s mother still has an unspeakable fear of this child.

Although Liang Ji’an’s behavior was in line with the standards of an outstanding child in the secular sense, anyone would feel frightened if he looked at him with such inhuman eyes for a long time.

He Wen even felt a cold sweat on his back, but fortunately Liang Ji’an seemed to be in a good mood today and did not dwell too much on this issue. He just said as a reminder: “Next time a similar situation occurs, remember to call me and tell me as soon as possible.”

He Wenxin thought, he had clearly taught the young master not to ask his brother for everything just now in front of him, but now who is turning around and condoning this behavior?

But even though he felt that Liang Ji’an’s words and deeds were contradictory, he immediately nodded in agreement and did not dare to have any objections.

“Change another group of people to take care of him.” Liang Jian looked at Shen Lingjun’s cheeks that were flushed from sleep and said softly: “If you can’t even take care of children well, there is no need to stay in the Liang family.”

The rain pattered outside the window, and Shen Lingjun hadn’t woken up after taking the water. Liang Jian carried him all the way to the car. The child’s soft cheek flesh was pressed against the side of his neck, giving people an inexplicable sense of peace of mind.

As soon as he got into the car and sat down, Shen Lingjun seemed to have sensed the changes in the surrounding environment. Before his eyes were fully opened, he called out to his brother indistinctly. Liang responded to him, and he quickly stopped, paused for a while, and said as if he remembered something: “Can I watch cartoons now?”

“No.” Liang Ji’an still refused, “It’s not stable while driving and it’s not good for your eyes.”

“We’ll see when we get home.”

Shen Lingjun was very reasonable around his brother. If Liang Jian said no, it was no, because his brother would always have legitimate reasons to reject him.

So without saying anything else, he pressed the button in the car twice and pulled out a pack of biscuits from his special snack box to eat.

It was already past his dinner time. Before he had a fever, he was still playing wildly in the kindergarten. His physical strength was completely zero or even negative, and his stomach was very hungry. So he ate the biscuits quietly, and from time to time he stuffed two pieces into Liang Ji’an’s mouth.

After eating the biscuits and eating a cheese stick, when he regained some energy, he began to share with Liang Ji’an what he ate and played in the kindergarten today, and asked Liang Ji’an what he had done that day.

Although he still couldn’t fully understand some of the words, it didn’t stop him from chatting with Liang Ji’an, although most of the time it was him, the little chatterbox, who did the talking.

Liang Ji’an responded to him from time to time while doing his homework.

When they got home, the meal was ready. Shen Lingjun’s fever had just subsided, so the dinner was light. Shen Lingjun sat next to Liang Ji’an, waiting for the meal to be served. A strange aunt came to feed him. Shen Lingjun shook his head, holding a spoon and said, “I’ll eat it myself.”

People in the family are always changing, and Shen Lingjun doesn’t care much. After all, to him, the only person he is most familiar with in the entire Liang family is Liang Ji’an, and the rest is He Wen. No one else is important.

He has adapted to life in the Liang family very comfortably. He will no longer be at a loss like when he was just taken back to the Liang family last winter, and he was so panicked that he didn’t even know where to stand.

Shen Lingjun remembered things very early, and probably no one would believe that such an old child could remember things from earlier, but Shen Lingjun couldn’t forget, the isolation and panic of being alone and unaccompanied by everyone.

He didn’t understand what an illegitimate child meant, and he didn’t know why the adults in the family looked at him with such complicated eyes. Of course, he couldn’t understand what those eyes meant. He just felt scared because he was not with his mother and was surrounded by strangers.

So at that moment, Liang Ji’an, who looked the least like an adult and least cared about his arrival, became his life-saving straw.

He almost quickly developed a serious dependence on Liang Ji’an, almost like a little follower, following him when he ate and sleeping. Even when Liang Ji’an went to the bathroom, he had to squat outside the door and wait.

As if he was afraid that his brother would be sucked away from the other end of the toilet.

I have to go to school with him.

In the end, Liang Ji’an spent a long time explaining to him repeatedly, and told him that after completing certain things at home every day, his brother would go home.

Shen Lingjun silently wrote it down and strictly followed it as if it were a rule of the game.

But Liang Jian felt a headache. In his not-so-long life, the appearance of Shen Lingjun was completely a thorny problem.

But what was even more strange to him was that he wasn’t disgusted by it.

Sometimes he would feed Shen Lingjun on a whim. Shen Lingjun loved sleeping and eating. Watching him eat would make people feel satisfied unconsciously.

    Like it is now.

Liang Ji’an held the spoon and scooped a spoonful of milk and sesame paste into Shen Lingjun’s round mouth. He would always be distracted when eating, and would stop while chewing. But now he was anxious because the cartoon was about to be released, and Liang Ji’an told him that he must finish eating before watching.

So he simply put the spoon into Liang Jian’s hand, raised his face and said, “Hey, brother.”

There were also a few glutinous rice balls stuffed with red bean paste in the sesame paste. This stew-like dinner brought together all Shen Lingjun’s favorite foods. He ate it deliciously, and his cheek meat became more and more cute as he chewed. Liang Jian occasionally teased him by raising the spoon slightly like fishing, which made him stretch his neck to bite the spoon.

Shen Lingjun didn’t realize that Liang Ji’an was teasing him. After all, no matter how far away the spoon was, it was always within the range that he could eat. He would only feel that his brother was feeding him until his hands were tired, and he had to take the initiative to get closer to Liang Ji’an.

After eating a bowl of sesame paste, his belly was rounded. He slumped in the chair and had no strength to move. He secretly looked at Liang Jian from the corner of his eye. When his brother had almost finished eating, he said coquettishly: “Brother, can you watch cartoons with me tonight?”

Liang Jian finally said this time: “Okay.”

He walked over and picked up Shen Lingjun, moved him for a while and then moved him to the sofa in the living room. Shen Lingjun’s favorite yellow sponge and pink starfish were playing on the TV screen.

Shen Lingjun really, really likes watching the yellow sponge fry meat patties and make burgers. There are many spatula toys at home.

His ideal in life is to become as good a chef as a yellow sponge.

He leaned on Liang Ji’an and watched with gusto, but he was not as attentive as before because he couldn’t help turning his head to look at Liang Ji’an. When he confirmed that Liang Ji’an was also looking at it seriously, he suddenly stood up, hugged Liang Ji’an’s head, and kissed him on the cheek.

    “My favorite brother!”

Liang Jian looked at him funny, “Where’s mom?”

Shen Lingjun said loudly: “I also like my mother the most!”

Liang Ji’an pinched his face and did not insist on correcting his usage of the word “most”. He just said: “Go to bed early tonight.”

Shen Lingjun nodded and leaned back against him peacefully and happily.
