    Chapter 28: Zombies Retaining Humanity?

Shi Yi took out the map from her backpack, carefully studying the route to City Y. She lightly traced her finger across the map, her eyes focused.

Finally, she raised her head and said to the other two, “Let’s go, I’ll lead the way.”

The three of them walked cautiously, warily observing their surroundings. Suddenly, a shopping mall appeared ahead. Shi Yi frowned, thinking that shopping malls are densely populated, so there must be a lot of zombies. Therefore, she decided to quicken her pace and pass through this dangerous area as quickly as possible.

However, just as they walked past the entrance of the mall, a baby zombie appeared in their sight.

After seeing them, this little zombie immediately let out a piercing cry. Hearing the sound, the other zombies rushed towards them like crazy.

Jiang Xianchuan’s face changed, and he shouted, “Run!” The three of them ran desperately, trying to escape the pursuing horde of zombies behind them. But the zombies chased closely, getting closer and closer.

Jiang Xianchuan was extremely anxious. While running, he thought about how to deal with the situation. Suddenly, he saw a small alley next to him and had an idea. He turned his head and shouted to the others, “Go this way!” As he spoke, he took the lead and rushed into the alley.

After entering the alley, Jiang Xianchuan used the terrain advantage to skillfully evade the zombies’ attacks. He nimbly weaved through the narrow passages, making it difficult for the zombies to catch up.

At the same time, he didn’t forget to look back and observe the situation of his teammates, ensuring everyone was safe.

After a fierce chase and fight, the three of them finally managed to escape the pursuit of the zombies. They gasped for breath, leaning against the wall to rest.

Jiang Xianchuan wiped the sweat from his forehead and said to his companions, “We need to leave here quickly, otherwise more zombies will come.”

After resting, the three of them continued their journey. Along the way, they discovered that these zombies were completely different from the ones they had encountered in the residential area before. They all seemed to be immersed in their own worlds, constantly repeating the same thing. х

Take the female zombie wearing a dress in front of them, for example. She was holding a piece of clothing and stood motionless in front of the mirror in the clothing store, then hit the mirror with her head over and over again, as if trying to shatter it. Each impact made a crisp sound, but she didn’t stop at all.

This bizarre behavior confused the three of them. They couldn’t help but wonder what these zombies had experienced to become like this. As they went deeper into the city center, they found more and more zombies with similar actions.

Some zombies walked in circles non-stop, while others repeatedly opened and closed the same door. These strange behaviors made the whole city seem particularly eerie and terrifying.

“Do you think these zombies are all doing the last thing they did in life? Or their favorite thing?” Shi Yi said her guess, her voice echoing in the silent street.

Shi Yi took a deep breath and continued, “Like that woman we saw before, she kept looking in the mirror, maybe she was a person who loved beauty when she was alive; and that old man, he kept looking at his watch, maybe he had something important to do when he was alive.”

Jiang Xianchuan listened quietly, his brows furrowed slightly, thinking about Shi Yi’s words.

Suddenly, his gaze fell on the zombie pushing a stroller in front of him. This zombie was different from the other zombies. It didn’t attack them, but focused on pushing the stroller, as if protecting the child inside.

A complex emotion welled up in Jiang Xianchuan’s heart, and he couldn’t help but think of his family and friends. If these zombies were really doing the last thing they did in life or their favorite thing, then would they be like this if they were infected? He didn’t know, but he knew he had to find the answer.

Jiang Xianchuan decided to follow and see what happened. He carefully approached the zombie, holding his weapon tightly in case of an accident.

When he approached the zombie, he noticed a hint of gentleness in the zombie’s eyes, which shocked him. He never thought that zombies would have such a human side.

“Could it be…” Jiang Xianchuan murmured to himself, “that they are not completely irrational monsters?” Countless thoughts flashed through his mind, trying to understand this phenomenon. Perhaps, these zombies were not just walking corpses, they still retained some humanity and memories.

Just then, a gust of wind blew, and a corner of the blanket in the stroller was lifted. Jiang Xianchuan took a closer look and saw that the stroller was empty, with only a tattered teddy bear.

A strange sadness welled up in his heart, and he realized that everything this zombie was doing was in vain. But at the same time, he had a little more understanding of the behavior of these zombies.
