Chapter Index

    Success

After the only outsider present had departed, Qiao Yunlan thought to herself that it was time to settle the score.

But before Qiao Yunlan could speak, Qin Zhao was the first to voice his interrogation. “Why didn’t you just accept the matter of the Prince’s study companion just now? Is any child of mine, the Governor of Jiangzhou, unworthy? And to mention the Qin family’s legitimate son—are you even capable of giving birth to one?”

Qiao Yunlan ignored him, instead signaling Nanny Wu with her eyes. “Today’s banquet at Baixiang Garden was originally set for Prince Ronghua. Since the guest of honor has left, the rest of you redundant people should leave if you have no business here.”

Nanny Wu understood immediately and dismissed everyone who was not involved in the matter.

Slap! Qiao Yunlan turned and struck Qin Zhao across the face.

Qin Zhao was in disbelief. Beside himself with rage, he pointed a trembling hand at Qiao Yunlan and roared, “You… you venomous woman! I will divorce you!”

“Divorce me? You think you’re worthy?!” Qiao Yunlan sneered as if she had heard a joke. “How do you think you became the Governor of Jiangzhou? Qin Zhao, don’t you forget that back when we married, you were the one who begged my father to let you marry me. What? It’s only been a few years, has your brain already forgotten?”

“You…” Qin Zhao had not expected Qiao Yunlan to be so aggressive today, but he remained stubborn. “So what if I begged to marry you? It is your own womb that is useless. In all these years, you haven’t added a single son or daughter to my Qin family. Am I supposed to just let my lineage end with me?”

Zhu Hua added, “Sister, the Master is right. If you hadn’t accidentally miscarried back then and become unable to conceive again, the Master wouldn’t treat you like this.”

Qin Zhao continued, “You had better go to the Lou family tomorrow and make it clear. The position of study companion goes to Qin Chi. Don’t say anything else.”

Qiao Yunlan was moved to angry laughter. She had only stepped back from power for a few years because she was tired; she hadn’t expected these people to truly take her for a weak, easily bullied cat.

At this moment, Qiao Yunlan didn’t want to pretend anymore. “Qin Zhao, if you want to keep sitting in your position as Governor, then stand there quietly and act like a wooden post.”

    Qin Zhao stammered, “You…”

Qiao Yunlan cut him off. “Me what? I only rested for a few years, and you actually thought about promoting a prostitute to my position? Don’t forget, though my child from back then is gone, I am still here! The right to manage the household? Ha! Is she even worthy?”

Zhu Hua pleaded, “Sister, I truly have no intention of replacing you. It’s just that you have lived in the Buddhist hall for so long, and someone had to manage the affairs of the manor. The Master, he only…”

    Slap!

Qiao Yunlan backhanded her and glared coldly at Zhu Hua. “Did I give you permission to speak? A lowly servant girl actually thinks she’s someone important? Furthermore, my parents only had one daughter—me. I have no sister, so stop trying to sicken me with that talk!”

Seeing Zhu Hua get hit, Qin Zhao grew truly anxious and shouted, “Qiao Yunlan, don’t push things too far!”

Qiao Yunlan countered, “I’m pushing too far? Ha! I only spent a few years eating vegetarian meals and praying to Buddha for the sake of my child. Did you really take me for a merciful Guanyin?”

Qin Zhao supported Zhu Hua, who was covering her face with both hands. His face was full of rage, but he truly did not dare to speak up or lay a hand on Qiao Yunlan.

Watching them, Qiao Yunlan let out a mocking laugh. “Fine! Stop pretending to be a devoted couple here. Since you dared to call me out of the Buddhist hall today, you should have expected your ending.”

Zhu Hua, her face hidden in Qin Zhao’s embrace, gritted her teeth so hard they nearly broke, and the handkerchief in her hand was almost torn to shreds.

Over the years, what little affection Qiao Yunlan had for Qin Zhao had long since withered away. If it weren’t for her father and the Qiao family, why would she have chosen to stay here?

“I am taking back the household management rights of the Qin family. I can’t be bothered to investigate the things you’ve done in the past,” Qiao Yunlan said, looking at Qin Zhao and Zhu Hua. “I don’t care how many concubines you take or how many illegitimate sons and daughters you have, but my position allows for no coveting or provocation. Otherwise, there’s no telling who will be the next Governor. Do you understand?”

Hearing this, Qiao Yi felt something was wrong. How could it end so easily?

But Qiao Yi wasn’t about to let things pass so simply. He was just about to start acting pitiful to stir up deeper conflict when, before he could even think of an excuse, the conflict walked right in.

Just then, a voice burst into the room.

“Mother! That brat, he actually… Why are you here?!”

Qiao Yi looked over. As expected, it was the fat pig who had tried to kill him in the alley earlier today.

Qiao Yi always believed in repaying grievances and seeking revenge. Since these people wanted to kill him, he wouldn’t let them off either.

The moment he saw Qin Chi, Qiao Yi put on a terrified expression and ran to hide behind Nanny Wu. “I’m scared. Sixth Brother wants to kill me.”

Zhu Hua panicked and scolded, “What nonsense are you talking? Qin Chi wouldn’t even step on an ant. Don’t you dare slander him here!”

Qiao Yi cried out, “I’m not slandering him! He clearly wanted to kill me! Look at the injuries on my body—they were all caused by the men he ordered to beat me. If I hadn’t been smart and run fast, how could I be standing here talking to you now?”

Looking at the shocking bruises and wounds Qiao Yi unhesitatingly revealed, Qiao Yunlan frowned.

Qin Chi pointed at Qiao Yi and cursed, “You’re full of it! If I’d known you were this much of a pain, I should have had them kill you in that alley today! Mmph…”

Before he could finish, Zhu Hua covered Qin Chi’s mouth and pulled him aside.

Sensing Qiao Yunlan’s sweeping gaze, Zhu Hua explained, “This child has a hot temper. When he gets excited, he loves to say these kinds of foolish things.”

Qiao Yunlan looked at Qin Chi and Zhu Hua but said nothing. Her face remained cold as she turned to Nanny Wu. “Take this child back first to get him cleaned up. Also, call a doctor to look at his injuries. I will handle the matters here personally, one by one.”

    Nanny Wu replied, “Yes, Madam.”
