    Chapter 15

Xie Yuzhan felt it wasn’t difficult to reach this conclusion.

Bai Zhi wasn’t actually afraid of him during their usual interactions; his nervousness and confusion stemmed from affection. He wasn’t sure when the other party started feeling this way, but now—

Nine times out of ten, he was trying to cultivate their relationship first, and then confess when the time was right?

However, it was also possible that he held no hope, given that Xie Yuzhan had been talking about divorce for a year, and the little rabbit was simply cherishing this year they had together.

But none of that mattered. He would let nature take its course. He had no such plans, and it seemed Bai Zhi was also very aware of boundaries, so it was fine.

And he genuinely wanted to taste the other person’s cooking.

He hadn’t asked, yet the other party had taken the initiative to cook. It couldn’t be denied… this made him happy. Zheng Feng’s words were correct to a certain extent; they did have a bit of tacit understanding.

Bai Zhi focused intently on preparing dinner. Only after finishing the last dish did he let out a sigh of relief. He exchanged a smile with Lin Haiyan—mission accomplished. He hoped these dishes would suit Xie Yuzhan’s taste.

As he snapped out of his food-focused state, he felt a gaze fixed on him. He turned his head and saw the very person he had been thinking about!

He wondered how long Xie Yuzhan had been standing in the doorway.

He slowly took a breath and adjusted his mood. It was fine, it was fine. CEO Xie might be a wolf in front of him, but his temper was genuinely good in front of Zheng Feng and Lin Haiyan. He wouldn’t bare his fangs at him in front of others.

As Xie Yuzhan walked over, Bai Zhi picked up the last dish he had just plated and smiled, “You came back at the perfect time. This is the freshly made vegetarian spare ribs. It’s made from lotus root, potatoes, and small dough sticks. The texture is almost like real meat.”

Lin Haiyan added with a beaming smile, “It took all afternoon. We tried several times, and this batch turned out the best.”

Bai Zhi felt a little embarrassed. Other vegetarian dishes were easy, but this mock meat was his first attempt. Either the texture was way off, or the presentation was unsatisfactory. Only this time did everything turn out well.

    It was finally presentable.

Xie Yuzhan looked at the vegetarian spare ribs before him, which were excellent in color, aroma, and taste. His mood was subtle. His gaze swept over the kitchen counter; the other dishes were also ready.

Effort had been put into this.

He raised his hand and smoothed a few stray hairs from Bai Zhi’s forehead, saying, “Thank you for your hard work. It looks like I’m in for a treat tonight. I must try everything.”

Bai Zhi smiled, only realizing after he finished smiling that he had forgotten to dodge Xie Yuzhan’s hand…

    Well, that was fine too.

Perhaps the other party’s demeanor was gentle right now, keeping his true nature hidden.

Bai Zhi was very satisfied with the dinner. He hadn’t been idle all afternoon and was genuinely hungry, so he ate heartily. When he looked over at CEO Xie, ah, he had finished his food too.

    Today’s Clean Plate Campaign: Successful!

Xie Yuzhan put down his napkin and praised, “The taste is excellent. Aunt Lin wasn’t exaggerating; opening a restaurant wouldn’t be a problem at all, especially this steamed egg custard. It’s delicate and smooth, with impeccable texture and flavor.”

Having received sincere praise, Bai Zhi couldn’t help but let his lips curl upward. He knew how picky the other party was, and given CEO Xie’s status and temperament, he wouldn’t say this against his conscience—there was no need.

So, he was genuinely praising him!

He wiggled his feet and smiled, “Then how about I occasionally make dinner for you in the future? I probably can’t get up early enough for breakfast, but dinner is doable.”

Xie Yuzhan chuckled softly. The little rabbit wasn’t very subtle; whatever he was plotting was clearly written on his face. He was easy to understand.

He replied, “That would be my honor. Thank you for your trouble.”

Bai Zhi waved his hand, then spoke up a little nervously, “If you eat the food I make, you can’t eat me, okay?”

He meant: Don’t scheme against him or think about devouring him anymore. The big boss understood, right?

Hearing this, Xie Yuzhan raised his eyebrows slightly. This little rabbit was learning to flirt with him. He wasn’t averse to it and played along, “Of course. Don’t worry, I don’t eat people.”

Bai Zhi’s cautious affection—who could remain completely unmoved?

As long as the other party didn’t cross the line, affection was a personal matter. He wouldn’t expose anything. Since he had accepted this gesture of goodwill, he would also show some consideration where needed.

In any case, it was a rare source of amusement in his otherwise bland life.

    He should express some gratitude.

And right now, the first priority was dealing with the “aftermath” of last night’s incident. It couldn’t be delayed any longer.

He stood up, walked to the other side of the dining table, picked up a gift box, and placed it on the table next to Bai Zhi. “This is for you. Regarding last night… I apologize. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

Bai Zhi was a little bewildered.

He looked up at Xie Yuzhan, blinking, then blinking again. What was going on?

He had noticed the large gift box earlier but hadn’t thought it was for him; he hadn’t considered that possibility at all. And what was CEO Xie doing? Apologizing to him?

Gods, an apex predator with overwhelming dominance was apologizing to him, a little rabbit?

    This defied the natural order!

The rules of the wild no longer applied.

His face was blank. After realizing what was happening, he abruptly stood up, took a step back, and stammered while holding onto the chair, “That… getting scared last night was just because I’m timid… You don’t, you don’t need to apologize to me!”

    He couldn’t handle this!

Xie Yuzhan paused. Bai Zhi’s words confirmed his suspicion: he had indeed frightened the person badly.

A hint of helplessness entered his gaze, and he offered a rare explanation, “Yesterday, there was a difficult collaboration at the company, so my mood wasn’t great. I thought you had gone to bed early and didn’t restrain myself much. I didn’t expect us to run into each other.”

As the words left his mouth, he was somewhat surprised himself.

That matter had been specially arranged by his paternal uncle. He had done the work, but that didn’t mean he was willing to suffer the loss. He wasn’t late because of that collaboration; it was because—

He had found some loopholes in the subsidiary managed by his cousin.

It was a considerably difficult and energy-consuming task, no less troublesome than the collaboration. But resolving it was beneficial to the Xie Corporation and harmless otherwise.

The other party would probably just think they had bad luck and their mistakes were discovered.

    That was good enough.

He wouldn’t discuss these matters with Zheng Feng or Lin Haiyan, yet he had confessed them to Bai Zhi without any mental burden. Could it be that… the little rabbit’s straightforward style was contagious?

Bai Zhi’s hands gripped the chair. He was still processing the situation.

After a long moment, he pursed his lips and said, “People aren’t machines; it’s normal to be unhappy. Even a little rabbit, cat, or dog has moments when they’re in a bad mood. It’s okay, really, no need to apologize. It’s just that I’m too timid.”

An apology from an apex predator felt quite unsettling.

Who had ever seen a fox director apologize to a pika rabbit? One kowtow wouldn’t be enough! After all, they were the source of food and clothing.

A wolf was on a much higher level than a Tibetan fox or a manul.

Xie Yuzhan saw Bai Zhi’s panic and surprise. He had known how timid the other person was since their first meeting—easily startled, like a little rabbit.

He gently tapped the gift box and adjusted his phrasing, “Regardless, scaring you is an objective fact. Apologizing is my business; accepting or refusing is yours.

“If you accept the apology, then this is an apology gift.

“If you don’t accept, that’s fine too. Just take it as a thank you gift for the dinner you prepared so thoughtfully today.”

Bai Zhi was surprised after hearing and processing the meaning of the words. Xie Yuzhan wasn’t forcing him to accept the apology; he was being so considerate.

If he didn’t know about the other party’s ruthlessness and cold severity, he would truly believe this was a good wolf.

Since Xie Yuzhan had put it that way, he didn’t refuse anymore. Xie Yuzhan was very articulate and pleasant to listen to.

After his emotions calmed down a bit, he grew curious. Although he didn’t like wearing formal attire or a full set of accessories, he could tell that CEO Xie had excellent taste. What kind of gift would he prepare?

He reached out and took the gift box, tilting his head. “Can I open it?”

“Of course,” Xie Yuzhan curved his lips. “It’s yours.”

It was his first time giving a gift like this, but… he probably hadn’t chosen wrong.

Bai Zhi nodded and lowered his head to unwrap the gift. When he saw what was inside, his non-existent rabbit ears instantly perked up. It was a limited edition Pikachu plush wearing overalls and a small shirt!

    Wow!

He held the Pikachu out with both hands, liking it more and more. He hugged it close and rubbed his cheek against the plush. The dense, fine fur felt incredibly good; the snuggling was very comfortable, and it carried a faint, subtle fragrance. He couldn’t put it down.

Clutching the Pikachu, he looked at Xie Yuzhan and smiled, “Thank you, I really love this gift!”

Seeing Bai Zhi’s starry eyes, Xie Yuzhan’s gaze was also tinged with a smile. “I’m glad you like it.”

    “Mhm!”

After snuggling the plush, Bai Zhi tidied up the clothes on his little buddy that he had messed up. Super cute.

As the two walked upstairs together, Xie Yuzhan’s gaze remained fixed on Bai Zhi, who was walking a step ahead of him. The other party’s good mood was palpable. He walked lightly, as if he would fly away if not for gravity.

It was a light, bubbling happiness.

He had chosen the right gift.

It was strange. Bai Zhi saw many things clearly, cutting straight to the heart of the matter. Despite being so afraid of him, he still had the courage to negotiate terms. And he also had this childlike, pure side. Being with him offered a temporary space for his heavy, suppressed emotions to breathe.

This year, he would wait and see.

His paternal uncle had committed a grave mistake back then, and he would eventually have to pay a sufficient price. Xie Yuzhan hadn’t forgotten; not for a moment over the years.

But the half-moment of relaxation he had now was enough.

Bai Zhi said goodnight to Xie Yuzhan. After returning to his room, he placed the overall-wearing Pikachu on the bed, sitting it side-by-side with the original one. He snapped a photo. Now he had two Pikachus to sleep with him.

Double the electric power to protect him!

He definitely wouldn’t have nightmares and would sleep soundly.

However, man proposes, God disposes. There are always unexpected situations. He didn’t have a nightmare that night, but he woke up feeling hot for some unknown reason.

Dazed, he got out of bed and checked the single control switch. He discovered that the villa’s constant temperature and humidity system had malfunctioned. Instead of cooling, it had started heating—in the middle of summer!

This was going to kill the rabbit!

He slapped the system off. He touched his forehead; it was burning hot, yet cold sweat was pouring down.

The temperature seemed to be rising higher and higher. The lights in front of his eyes grew dimmer, his heart pounded rapidly, and his breathing became increasingly shallow. He leaned against the wall and crouched down, finally curling up against the wall, feeling like he was being roasted alive…

In his hazy consciousness, he heard the sound of a door opening, too far away to hear clearly. Before passing out, he only saw a figure approaching. It looked like Xie Yuzhan.

Was this the wolf taking advantage of the weak and pliable rabbit to come and eat him?

But a suffocating rabbit doesn’t taste good, QAQ.

    Note
