Chapter 77: The Mermaid Comes Ashore

Yan Ye’s diet hadn’t changed since arriving at the institute; it was still fish. Song Qiuyi continued to feed him. They were often the only two in Laboratory 52. This life was very similar to being on the ship, with no major changes, except that Song Qiuyi wouldn’t sleep in the lab.

This was all thanks to Tan Fei being forced to take sick leave.

Today, Song Qiuyi came to deliver food, but Yan Ye unusually didn’t see fish, but soft bread instead. He swam over in surprise, “Why the sudden improvement in my meals today?”

Song Qiuyi stared at his tail for a good while before tearing off a piece of bread. “Tan Fei’s vacation ends tomorrow?”

Yan Ye ate the bread he offered, seeing through his little scheme. “You want me to beat him up again?”

Song Qiuyi’s eyes lit up; he did have that idea, to make Tan Fei sick for another ten days or half a month.

Yan Ye finished all the bread, swam further inside, and then asked with a smile, “Why do you want me to beat him up?”

Song Qiuyi stood on the other side of the glass, getting closer to Yan Ye. “Tan Fei wants to draw your blood!”

Yan Ye’s eyes flickered slightly, and his smile faded a bit. “Aren’t you the same? Essentially, you’re all the same. Shouldn’t I draw your blood too?”

Song Qiuyi couldn’t argue. Yan Ye’s words reminded him that he and Tan Fei were the same; they approached this mermaid with strong motives.

Song Qiuyi suddenly became speechless, not daring to look at him any longer, and hurriedly took the plate and left.

Yan Ye watched his flustered back, a hint of a smile appearing in his narrow, deep eyes. It was a unique possessiveness, and he was pleased by Song Qiuyi’s possessiveness.

Leaving the laboratory, Song Qiuyi ran into Tony and Mark in the corridor. Tony respectfully called him “Professor,” but the respect in his eyes had now turned into envy and jealousy, unable to be hidden.

The three of them captured the mermaid together, but Song Qiuyi was ultimately in charge, which really dissatisfied the other two, but they couldn’t do anything about it.

They should resent the other professor who gained without effort, but they chose to resent this professor who, like them, captured the mermaid but had the qualification to participate in the mermaid’s research.

Mark saw the emotions in his colleague’s eyes and carefully reminded him, nudging him with his elbow.

Song Qiuyi’s gaze locked onto Mark. “You’re Mark?”

He had checked Mark’s information, and the face in the photo on the file clearly matched the person in front of him.

Being called by Professor Song, Mark was flattered and nodded. Before he could say anything flattering or polite, he heard Professor Song’s warning, “Stay away from my mermaid!”

Yes, it was his mermaid. Perhaps it should belong to him alone, and not to the entire institute!

This wasn’t the first time Song Qiuyi had this idea, but this time it came so strongly that he couldn’t help wanting to possess him alone.

Mark was frightened by his cold gaze and stammered “yes” twice, his steps involuntarily retreating, and he dared not think about seeing the mermaid again.

While Song Qiuyi could stop others, he couldn’t stop Tan Fei. The other party, like him, was in charge of Laboratory 52, and it was only a matter of time before he would act against the mermaid, which made Song Qiuyi very irritable.

That night, Song Qiuyi stood on the balcony of his room, letting the cold wind blow on him, flipping through the diary his teacher had left behind, which was more like an observation diary of the mermaid.

He had never thought about whether to show this diary to others, but now, Song Qiuyi wanted to keep it to himself. Even if his teacher wanted it back, he wouldn’t give it.

This was a secret between him alone and the mermaid.

Song Qiuyi took out another fountain pen and wrote two lines about the mermaid’s scales in the diary. Between the lines, he couldn’t help but praise the beauty of the mermaid’s scales, and finally, he clipped the scale he had carefully preserved into the diary.

The diary was placed in the gemstone box by Song Qiuyi. They were the same, both of great significance to him, and couldn’t be lost, because it was a gift from the mermaid.

The next day, Tan Fei went to work. This time, he learned a lot and didn’t try to release the anesthetic to knock the mermaid unconscious right away. Instead, he snatched the food Song Qiuyi had prepared for the mermaid.

Yan Ye watched as Tan Fei threw the fish in one by one. He didn’t eat them right away, but used his tail to flick them into a corner, and then swam away under Tan Fei’s expectant gaze.

The glass tank prepared for Yan Ye in the laboratory was very large, large enough to accommodate more than a dozen people standing inside without being crowded. Of course, the only people qualified to enter were Song Qiuyi and Tan Fei, the latter having to be careful of his tail.

After the last lesson, Tan Fei knew that this mermaid was very aggressive, so he wanted to learn from Song Qiuyi and become familiar with the mermaid, to see if it would gradually lower its guard against him.

Tan Fei always remembered that although the mermaid’s tail had lashed out last time, it hadn’t ultimately attacked Song Qiuyi.

This should also be because Song Qiuyi had spent a long time with it. The mermaid was clearly deceived by him, thinking that Song Qiuyi was different from himself.

Tan Fei walked to the other side of the glass, coaxing him in a gentle voice, “You’re not going to eat? It’s the food I prepared for you!”

Song Qiuyi watched this scene from behind. Hearing Tan Fei talking to the mermaid, his brow furrowed. Did Tan Fei know that Yan Ye could speak? Was that why he said that?

Just as he was feeling upset about this, he saw Tan Fei making several funny gestures to Yan Ye, all of them actions of eating.

The displeasure in Song Qiuyi’s heart slowly disappeared. He went to scoop up some fish from the fish tank and threw three of them into the water tank.

The fish had just entered the water tank and hadn’t adapted yet when they were cut open by a sharp finger. Before they could even struggle, they entered Yan Ye’s belly.

It had to be said that Yan Ye still gave a lot of face to a certain person, but the face given made the other person’s face turn black, and even the way he looked at him became hateful.

Mermaids have sharp teeth. Yan Ye felt this gaze, and he slowly turned around, using sharp fingers to draw a wave in the water, baring a mouthful of white teeth, intimidating the man in front of him.

Tan Fei was so frightened by him that his body reacted first, taking several steps back. The impact the mermaid had given him last time was not small.

Yan Ye didn’t expect the man in front of him to be so easily frightened; his courage was no match for his family’s.

Thinking this, Yan Ye moved his gaze away from Tan Fei, even disliking the fish he had thrown in.

Song Qiuyi’s mood was inexplicably good, but this good mood sank all of a sudden when he saw Tan Fei looking at Yan Ye with that kind of look.

Tan Fei’s character in the institute was very good, but this was all an evaluation given by those who didn’t know him well enough. He himself was narrow-minded and cruel, and any research creatures in his hands died very painfully.

Song Qiuyi had once witnessed Tan Fei doing an experiment on a pregnant cat. The cat should have died, but he used something as if to prolong the cat’s death time and deepen the cat’s sense of pain. He just happened to pass by and heard the cat’s screams in the laboratory.

Afterward, he heard other researchers say that the cat’s research had actually failed, and the cat should have died, but he didn’t know what Tan Fei did to the cat that allowed it to be resurrected for half an hour after death!
