    Chapter 7

The Lotus Soul Struggles to Return

The day Lianhua successfully passed her tribulation, the lifespan of her mortal body in the human world happened to reach its end. According to the laws of the Heavenly Dao, her soul should have returned to her immortal body and ascended directly to the Celestial Realm. However, her mortal body seemed to have taken root, stubbornly refusing to depart with her soul. Even in her final moments, she was twice rushed to the emergency room for resuscitation, but ultimately, they were powerless to save her.

The Immortal Officials panicked, using every immortal technique to help her soul return to its rightful place and ascend, but they were repeatedly repelled by an invisible force of attachment. Lianhua’s soul hovered above her mortal body, watching the mortals weeping around the bed, and a dull ache spread through her heart first.

Father Emperor’s voice echoed from the heavens, carrying a mix of helplessness and tenderness: “Enough. The past cannot be chased. This mortal body was merely the vessel for your tribulation. I shall take one look and return to the Celestial Realm. Do not use your magic to try and keep me here. I know you will return to your position. Do not worry.”

The Immortal Officials also urged her: “Immortal Maiden, do not linger in this mortal dust. You have suffered enough hardship here! We shall return to the Celestial Realm first. If you need anything, just send a message, and we will rush back immediately!”

As the words faded, the immortal light gradually dispersed, and all the Immortal Officials departed, leaving only Lianhua’s soul wandering in the human world. She looked at her cold mortal body and sighed softly: “Why go through all this trouble, only to suffer this ordeal?”

A young man in green robes raised his tear-filled eyes from the bedside. He was Young Master Liu, who was actually a single soul and spirit fragment of Hu Si. The youth choked out: “To receive the Immortal Maiden’s compassion and be by your side has been the greatest fortune of my life. I dare not delay your return to the heavens, but I… I truly cannot let go.”

Lianhua’s soul floated before him, her voice gentle: “You have two things you cannot let go of, is that right?”

The youth was startled, then nodded: “One is myself. Fourth Fox Brother once instructed me to only be the Immortal Maiden’s attendant and never to develop feelings. But my heart loves the Immortal Maiden. I do not seek status, only to be able to stay by your side always. Even if I follow your soul back to the Celestial Realm, it would comfort my foolish devotion and ensure you are not lonely after you return to your position.”

“And the second thing?” Lianhua pressed.

“The second is Zixun, my neighbor. Because of his obsessive dreams, he is now struggling and destitute. I want to see him one last time. I wonder if the Immortal Maiden would permit it?” The youth’s tone was full of pleading.

Lianhua nodded: “Go. Say your goodbyes properly, and do not forget your manners.”

Just as the youth was about to leave, he suddenly turned back, gathering his courage to ask: “Immortal Maiden, could you tell me, did you… did you ever love me?”

Lianhua’s soul paused slightly, her voice carrying a hint of melancholy and warning: “One must not be too attached to obsession. You must not, you must not.” Seeing the youth look confused, she added, “Don’t ask again, alright?”

The youth lowered his head and mumbled, “Alright.”

After the youth left, Lianhua’s soul merged with the residual consciousness remaining in her mortal body. Suddenly, another voice sounded—it was the manifestation of her mortal body’s attachment: “The matter here is concluded. You have divine duties awaiting you in the Celestial Realm. Return now, can you?”

“I can, and I cannot,” Lianhua’s immortal soul and mortal consciousness intertwined, her voice flickering between clarity and obscurity. “Returning to the Celestial Realm is naturally good, but there is still a trace of lingering thought that remains unresolved.”

“Then don’t dwell on it, alright?” The mortal consciousness’s voice was soothing.

    “Alright.”

With that word, silence fell. Lianhua’s immortal soul and mortal consciousness rested quietly together, speaking no more. Yet, the thought of wanting to return but not yet returning still circled deep within her soul consciousness, refusing to dissipate.
