Oh My Hero – Episode 78

    78. Change

Today begins much like any other day.

That’s because I wake up at 5 AM every morning to go for a jog.

As always, I showered after jogging and woke up Cha Woojin.

He seemed to have a restless sleep at dawn, and today I had to wake him up for quite a while before he finally got up.

Cha Wooreen, who barely woke up with her brother, whined again today.

    “Oppa, my head hurts…”

Today’s whining was a more serious matter than before.

Perhaps that’s why Woojin, who was still half-asleep even after getting out of bed, suddenly snapped awake.

“It hurts? Where, where does it hurt? Here? Or here? You seem to have a slight fever…”

Woojin quickly approached Cha Wooreen, touched her forehead, and felt her head in various places, checking her condition.

However, Cha Wooreen seemed to be in really bad shape, as she started to sob despite Woojin’s sincere concern.

“I, here… my head hurts… sob, waaaah! It hurts, here it hurts!”

In the end, Cha Wooreen burst into tears from the early morning.

Thanks to the little monster also crying along with Cha Wooreen, it became even noisier.

Apart from the noise, it was pitiful to see a child crying in pain.

Woojin seemed almost dazed at the sight of his younger sister like that.

Woojin, hugging and patting Cha Wooreen, said to me,

“D, do you have any over-the-counter medicine? Like Tylenol, or a fever reducer… She, she’s never been like this before…”

Woojin was severely flustered because of Cha Wooreen. Listening to his dazed muttering, it seemed that she had been healthy without any minor illnesses until now.

A child living such a tough life outside could be like that. Cha Wooreen, she was quite the dutiful daughter.

    Though not right now.

Anyway, it seemed like I needed to give the kid some pain relievers or fever reducers, but there was a problem.

I don’t have any over-the-counter medicine in my room.

‘But I didn’t need it because medicine doesn’t work on me due to my ability. How would medicine work when I don’t even get drunk? Besides, I don’t even get sick.’

I grumbled inwardly, feeling preemptively guilty.

Besides, since I had always lived alone, I had forgotten that other people suddenly get sick or have problems.

Well, when Woojin was sick… I just thought he was a bit frail, so I took him straight to the Medical Bureau.

When someone is sick, you should go to a medical facility first.

I calmed Woojin down and took Cha Wooreen to the Medical Bureau.

    *

    “Hmm, there’s nothing wrong.”

Lee Hwayoung said indifferently while looking at the test results.

“Nothing wrong? The kid was crying her eyes out, how can there be nothing wrong? Are the results wrong?”

“That’s what the tests show so far. Do you want to do another test if you don’t trust it?”

Woojin’s face turned pale at the mention of another test.

Woojin looked at me with a desperate expression and shook his head vigorously.

It was the result of various tests to find out what was wrong with Cha Wooreen.

It was a bit difficult to prepare for the tests while comforting a sick child.

It’s not that I couldn’t do it again if I had to, but Woojin seemed to have had a hard time. I respected Woojin’s wishes.

“No, it’s okay. Then what medicine did you give her?”

“I just gave her a pain reliever, and what she’s getting now is glucose. She seemed very tired.”

    -Beep beep…….

The little monster, which I had put in my pocket to keep it away while Cha Wooreen was being examined, cried at the worst possible moment. Hwayoung hates all animals except humans, so this is a big problem.

“What, did you change your smartwatch alarm from vibration to sound?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah, just trying to, give some change to my life. Hahaha…”

Fortunately, Hwayoung didn’t seem to realize that I had a monster in my pocket. I should be able to get away with this if I slip by unnoticed.

“Hmm. You’re very suspicious, aren’t you? You’re making a face like you’re hiding something.”

    “N, no~! What would I be hiding?”

The perceptive Lee Hwayoung looked me up and down with sharp eyes.

I smiled slyly, put my hand in my pocket, and blocked the monster’s mouth. If the monster doesn’t make a sound, I should be able to get through this safely.

“Why is she still in pain if there’s nothing wrong with her? Should I keep giving her pain relievers until she says she’s not in pain?”

Just then, Woojin spoke to Hwayoung with good timing.

“Ah, it could just be because she’s tired. If you let her rest now…”

Lee Hwayoung moved away from me to give Woojin a detailed explanation.

    ‘Whew~ that was close.’

If I get caught bringing a monster to the Medical Bureau, they will report it to the Medical Bureau first, and the Medical Bureau will hold me responsible for why I’m carrying a monster around.

That would lead to the Research Center being held responsible, and if they find out about the collaboration with the Guide Bureau, the final blame will fall on Woojin.

I must never get caught by Lee Hwayoung.

Hwayoung said to either admit the child for a day to see how it goes, or just take her home, and then left, saying she had been called.

    I watched Woojin carefully.

Woojin was staring blankly at the sleeping Cha Wooreen.

It was pitiful to see the little child crying from the morning because she was sick and then falling asleep from exhaustion due to the medicine.

But it’s not Woojin’s fault. I felt sorry for Woojin, who looked haggard from worrying about Cha Wooreen.

Woojin looked sadly at the small hand with the IV drip and the eyes that were sore from crying so much.

Seeing his clear, winter-lake-like eyes darken, I felt sad too.

I also wanted to stay with Woojin and take care of Cha Wooreen.

    But we have a schedule.

I patted Woojin’s shoulder and said.

“Woojin, we have to go now. I know you want to be with Wooreen because she’s in so much pain, but it’s an important matter externally, so we have to go. Let’s finish quickly and pick Wooreen up when her IV is done.”

    “…Yes. …Let’s go.”

Woojin answered weakly and left the hospital room with me.

I poked the monster in my pocket with my finger, feeling resentful for no reason. It was because of this guy that Woojin and I had to go to the Research Center.

    *

    -Beep beep-

    -Squawk squawk!

The monster kept crying as if it felt good from the researchers’ touch.

But unlike the monster, the researchers didn’t look satisfied.

“Hmm~ You didn’t just say it was special because it was naturally born, right?”

“I heard that even the color was different, but it’s an average scale color? Same with the eyes.”

“Baby Mirnare is always cute, but still… I don’t think it’s worth giving up a golden weekend and coming to work for, Director Chae.”

The researchers’ complaints eventually turned to Director Chae Sooji.

Of course, Chae Sooji wasn’t someone who would take the brunt of the complaints.

He immediately turned the arrows towards us.

“You clearly proved that the child who was with you made this Mirnare special, so why didn’t you bring her?”

“I told you, the kid is very sick today.”

“Then you should have come even if you had to maintain the appearance of the Mirnare. You knew that the color changes when you touch its head, so why did you do that, Esper Gang Hana? Our Research Center staff gave up their golden Sunday solely for the passion for work, but hasn’t it become meaningless?”

It’s unfair because I didn’t ask to meet today.

I’m spending my golden holiday on you guys, you know? I came to meet you even though it’s my day off and I can’t even take care of the sick child, and you’re being so brazen.

Woojin didn’t say anything, probably because he felt bad about leaving Cha Wooreen behind.

I thought I should get rid of these guys quickly so I said,

“Then let’s call it a day and spend our holidays, and meet tomorrow, which is a working day. I’ll definitely change the color next time.”

“That’s not it! Shouldn’t we find out exactly what the difference is between this naturally born Mirnare and the Mirnare that was artificially born on a specific date? Rather, it’s more suitable to measure now that the appearance has become ordinary.”

“That’s right! We can’t waste this time we’ve been given!”

These Research Center people were too eager, so things didn’t go as planned.

But the kid is sick, you know? Shouldn’t you try to let me go quickly in this situation?

But if they could have these normal thoughts, they wouldn’t be EGA Association researchers.

They really invested time to dig into the monster in earnest. If that’s the case, I don’t know why they complained about being made to work on the weekend.

    *

By the time I was freed from the Research Center guys, the sun was setting.

It took much longer than I thought.

Woojin, who came out of the Research Center, seemed impatient and started running, leaving me behind.

‘I understand how he feels, but I’m a little sad.’

Maybe because his legs are long, Woojin was running fast.

But there’s no way I, an Enhancement-Type Esper, can’t catch up.

I ran towards the Medical Bureau with Woojin.

    Slam-

Perhaps because he was anxious, Woojin opened the hospital room door roughly.

That tough side of him is cool, but it felt a bit awkward to do that in a multi-bed hospital room. Luckily, Cha Wooreen was the only patient.

    “Oppa!”

Cha Wooreen, who had woken up at some point, jumped out of bed and ran to Woojin.

She looked like a puppy as she ran and jumped into Woojin’s arms.

Woojin hugged Cha Wooreen tightly and said,

“Are you okay now? How’s your head? Does it still hurt?”

“I don’t hurt at all now. Look. The unni gave me juice.”

Cha Wooreen seemed to be really okay, as she chattered to Woojin as usual.

Woojin was so worried. Whether she knows it or not, she was her usual energetic self.

‘Well, it’s good that she’s healthy.’

I stroked Cha Wooreen’s hair and said,

“Wooreen, don’t be sick anymore. Your oppa was worried. I was worried too, of course.”

    “I’m not sick anymore.”

“Yeah. Don’t be sick in the future either.”

“I’m not sick. I won’t be sick, so you can’t abandon me. Okay?”

“Huh? What are you talking about? When did I say I would abandon you if you were sick? No, why are you saying that?”

    -Beep beep

    “Squawk squawk! I missed you!”

Cha Wooreen ignored my question and enjoyed reuniting with the monster that escaped from my pocket.

    The disappointment was all mine.
