Oh My Hero – Episode 2

    2. Cha Woojin (1)

After doing that bonus rescue mission at dawn, a new schedule was added to my life.

When I didn’t have a mission, I always spent my day like this: jogging > breakfast > morning training > lunch > afternoon training > dinner > late-night training > sleep. But now, “Cha Woojin visitation” was added.

The handsome man I rescued was named Cha Woojin. He’s still unconscious, so it’s not like he told me himself. Apparently, the Medical Bureau arbitrarily took his fingerprints and ran a background check.

It can’t be helped, since it would be a disaster if monsters invaded the Medical Bureau and caused chaos. Woojin will understand even if they ran a background check without his consent. This is the only medical institution now, so the patient’s identity needs to be certain.

If his identity is unknown, we’d be stuck in a long and painful marathon until he’s proven not to be a monster. In this respect, Cyberpunk Korea is so convenient. Everything is registered with fingerprints, making it easy to manage. It’s a national blessing that you can figure out who almost anyone is just by taking their fingerprints.

After finishing afternoon training, I bought three ranunculus flowers from the flower shop and went to see Woojin. Last time, I bought lilies because Woojin resembled lilies, but I got scolded a lot, saying they weren’t suitable for hospital visits. The scent was too strong and not good for patients.

So today, I bought ranunculus flowers, which are moderately large, white, and pinkish like lilies.

‘Woojin’s skin is fair and neat, so they’ll suit him well.’

On the second day of visitation, I bought food like juice and fruit, but Woojin was unconscious, so he couldn’t eat it. So, that day I shared it with Hwayoung and our friends at the Medical Bureau.

Today, the fourth day, I didn’t make that mistake. I felt lighthearted, thinking I’d gotten the hang of visiting Woojin. Plus, there’s good news today.

It’s been determined that Woojin doesn’t have any toxic substances from monster contamination, so he’s been moved from the protective tent to a regular hospital room.

So, I don’t have to wear a hazmat suit when I see Woojin anymore.

I put the flower vase on the bedside table next to Woojin’s head and put the ranunculus flowers in it. As expected, my eye for things is great. Woojin and ranunculus flowers suited each other remarkably well. Handsome men and flowers are the best. It’s no wonder there used to be a brand name called “A Man with Flowers.”

After enjoying the view to my heart’s content, I wiped Woojin’s face and hands and feet with a wet towel. The dark bruises on Woojin’s stomach had faded a lot, and they were turning yellow. They say they’ll remove his oxygen mask tomorrow, so he’s really getting better.

Now, all that’s left is for him to regain consciousness.

I finished today’s visitation and went back to my daily life.

    *

As soon as morning came, an emergency dispatch order was issued.

A mass appearance of monsters occurred in E District. From what I heard, the monsters are huge.

‘Gang Hana of the exploration team is perfect for this kind of mission.’

With my Adamantine Body/Invulnerable Physique and strength enhancement ability, combined with martial arts and combat skills, I’m perfect for messing with monsters and figuring out their weaknesses. And dealing the finishing blow as a bonus.

Well, there are also psychic Espers who read objects, which is a real exploration ability, or Enhancement-Type Espers with clairvoyance who can see far away, but they’re non-combatants. I have combat abilities, so I’m better at handling emergencies.

Anyway, the Great Monster Extermination Team travels with an exploration team, an attack team, and a medical team. And along with about 30 team members, including the Guides who Guide each team member, we moved to E District.

Because the existing local autonomy system collapsed, the names of the areas were changed to impersonal names like A, B, C, D, E, F, and G Districts. Various cities, districts, towns, and villages are all boringly called by letters. a-point, b-point, and so on.

‘Well, the Association takes me to the mission location, and I live in the Center, so I don’t really care.’

The place that came up with these boring names is the Esper Guide Association, abbreviated as EGA Association.

This organization suddenly appeared in the world after the government collapsed, swallowed up the systems that the government used to manage, and is acting like the government of Korea.

In fact, the EGA Association manages the whole world. They attach names like Korean Branch and Taiwanese Branch.

And the monsters played a big role in the world becoming so bizarre.

Seven years ago, the world experienced an unprecedented major event called the “Gate Break.” That’s when the sky suddenly turned red, and monsters popped out and hunted all the existing living things indiscriminately.

In the completely collapsed pandemonium, people who were almost dying were saved by the sudden appearance of the EGA Association. Superpowered people called “Espers” appeared in droves, killing monsters and creating safe zones.

The EGA Association, which appeared like a comet, created their hideouts all over the world and gathered Espers and Guides. And they advertised that they would be a safety net to protect people and diligently used the gathered Espers and Guides.

    Just like right now.

The E District, which we arrived at by helicopter, had a Yonggary the size of a 5-story building breathing fire and roaming the streets.

‘No, it’s not Yonggary, it’s a giant rat. Why does it have a horn on the line connecting its head to its tail, being a rat? And it even breathes fire.’

Song Jooha, an S-grade Psychokinetic Esper from the attack team who was in the same helicopter, tried to drop the debris of a building on the rat’s head and tried to burn the rat by blocking the fire with a Magnetic Field, but the giant rat was perfectly fine as if its fur was fireproofed.

I could try to bind it with psychokinesis, but that takes a lot of energy, so I should step in at this point.

My role is to reduce the burden on the attack team.

If I target the monster’s weaknesses and knock it down instead of the attack team members who only pour out dull attacks, I can save the attack team members’ abilities.

‘There are still 7 more giant monsters that haven’t been identified, so I’ll be busy.’

I jumped out of the helicopter to start working.

    Whoosh-

I aimed the landing point at the rat’s head while facing the strong wind.

At the same time, I took a stance and prepared to strike down.

Despite being in descent, I stood up and lifted my left leg high. At the same time, I prepared for a strong impact with my muscle enhancement ability, and as I fell, I struck the rat’s head with my left foot.

    Bang!

With a dull sound, the rat, which was hit directly by the strike, staggered slightly.

But it didn’t seem to take a big hit.

‘I wanted to crack its skull, but that’s a shame.’

The giant rat was not only perfectly fine, but it seemed angry at me, and it rummaged through its head with its forepaws to grab me, who was on top of its head.

But I’m not someone who would be caught by the monster’s obvious forepaw movements.

I dodged the rat’s forepaws that were flying to catch me and ran around on the rat’s head.

While running around, I also kicked the horn once, but the horn on its head was firmly fixed, so it seemed difficult to give it an impact with a normal attack.

I could increase the output of my muscle enhancement ability and attack to give it an impact, but I needed a process to measure how much firepower I needed to generate. And this process will inevitably waste time and my ability.

I was thinking of using as little ability as possible, so I changed my attack direction. Attack the soft spots instead of the hard ones. I don’t even need muscle enhancement ability for these parts.

    Whack, whack, whack!

I dodged the pouring forepaw attacks and ran to the giant rat’s ear and kicked it hard. With the sound of cartilage breaking, the rat’s ear was crumpled in the shape it was kicked.

‘It’s not a fatal wound, but it’ll be easier if I get rid of its sensory organs.’

In addition, the pain will reduce the attempts to catch me with its forepaws.

The rat twisted its huge body and made a fuss while breathing fire due to the pain, but I grabbed its fur and held on and crossed over to the other ear and tore off the remaining ear as well.

‘I’ve distracted its nerves, so now I need to aim for the real vital point.’

The giant rat shook its head from side to side and writhed, but it didn’t bury its head in the ground, so it was worth holding on.

I crossed over to its eyes as it was and punched both eyes alternately.

    “Kuaaaaa!”

This time it really hurt, and the giant rat screamed. It was doing its size’s worth, and it didn’t make a ‘squeak’ sound even though it looked like a rat.

The monster, which let out a huge roar, spewed out a huge fire that was incomparable to what it had done so far.

‘Haha, that fire won’t reach me, who’s sitting on your nose.’

I wasn’t afraid at all even though a huge flame was soaring up under my shoes that were near its snout. Because that flame won’t reach me.

    But something was strange.

The altitude of the giant rat’s nose, where I was sitting, was gradually rising. I felt uneasy and looked behind me, and the flames were pouring directly on the helicopter above.

[Static, you crazy! Gang Hana- [email protected]#$%]

Curses towards me poured out over the radio, but instead of receiving the radio, I finished my work by punching a hole in the rat’s neck with a straight punch.

I was cursed at throughout the mission for making all the team members except me get a baptism of fire. The team leader told me to write a Statement of Circumstances/Letter of Apology when I went to Headquarters.

“Hing, that’s too much. But I ran around everywhere and reduced the Ability Wasting.”

I felt wronged and argued to the team leader that I worked hard.

The more an Esper uses their ability, the more strain it puts on their body. It mainly puts a lot of strain on the brain, and there is additional strain depending on the ability.

An Esper whose body has been strained by using too much ability returns to a normal state with the Guide’s ability, Guiding. The ability used by the Esper is filled with another ability called Guiding.

In addition, Guides are said to put a physical burden on their bodies if they do too much Guiding. I’m not a Guide, so I don’t know what it’s like.

    Anyway, ability is labor.

So, saving ability is like saving labor costs.

For that reason, I can confidently argue.

“So, I’m always financially helping the EGA Association!”

But just because I’m confident doesn’t mean everything is accepted.

“But it was too much to have all the team members get attacked… Yes… I know. My role is my role, and the mistake is the mistake…”

I, who was explaining at length to the team leader, gave up making excuses and decided to write a Statement of Circumstances/Letter of Apology quietly.
