Chapter 98 – Approaching the Target
That very night, Ning Fei called Yu Zhou to complain about the transportation team.
After listening, Yu Zhou was speechless. “You called me late at night just to tell me this? Are you still in kindergarten, tattling to your parents?”
Ning Fei calmly replied, “Didn’t you say you’re so busy you often don’t check your messages?”
“Then you don’t need to call right now, do you? I thought something urgent was happening!”
“What, disturbing your nightlife?” Ning Fei sneered, “What can I do? I wouldn’t know, I don’t have a nightlife.”
“You better not have a nightlife, or I’ll return the favor,” Yu Zhou retorted. “The moment I find Duan Yunhong in the population system, I’ll find a way to shove him in your face.”
“He’s an ultimate destroyer, if you want to ruin your own career, go ahead,” Ning Fei wasn’t afraid he’d actually do it. No matter what jokes they made verbally, they were always on the same page when it came to actions. It was a long-lasting understanding, an unbreakable alliance, regardless of their relationship at the time. Many people in the Administration still believed they “had something,” and they initially denied it, but later got tired of arguing.
“He’s really that powerful?” Yu Zhou scoffed. “Didn’t you beat him before? Why are you so afraid? That’s not like you.”
“It’s not fear, it’s annoyance,” Ning Fei complained. “No matter what you do, he can match your actions and disrupt you accordingly, accurately enraging the debt collector.”
Yu Zhou said, “If he comes to the Tian Yue base, no matter how high his position, he’s still under me. What am I afraid of? Alright, I’m hanging up. Don’t bother me late at night unless it’s urgent.”
Ning Fei: “Alright, bye.”
He hung up first, completely ignoring whether Yu Zhou had anything else to say, or if he’d be angry at being hung up on.
He put away his phone, planning to find an inconspicuous place in the settlement outside the Hui Chuan base to spend the night. The settlement was very dim, with clusters of old or even dilapidated tents, with only a few flashlights shining dimly. Most of the people living here couldn’t afford the rent inside the base and were afraid to venture out. They found odd jobs in the base during the day and slept in the settlement outside at night. Although the living conditions were poor, at least they were within the safety guarantee of the Hui Chuan base, and didn’t have to worry about attacks from zombies or other mutated creatures.
But with fewer threats from mutated creatures, there were more threats from people.
Ning Fei had just turned two corners near the tent area of the settlement when he suddenly stopped. He turned back, facing the quiet and dim road he had come from, where it was hard to tell if there were people or ghosts, and pulled out a dagger from his waist.
However, he didn’t immediately attack, but instead used his flashlight to illuminate the dagger, and then used his wind ability to make the dagger float and spin above his palm. The light from the flashlight reflected on the blade, and the sharp, cold light seemed to dazzle the eyes.
“Stay away,” Ning Fei said coldly, “I don’t want to waste energy killing someone late at night.”
He knew very well that it was most likely that he had been targeted by robbers while he was talking on the phone alone. He didn’t want to cause trouble, but he wasn’t afraid of it either, so he decided to give a warning first. But no one answered him. He initially thought the person following him would retreat quietly, but instead, he heard a faint “click” in the silence.
He knew this sound well – someone was pulling the bolt of a gun.
Judging from the sound, it seemed like a pistol, maybe not a standard firearm, or maybe it was just because Ning Fei wasn’t familiar with the guns of this world yet. In any case, Ning Fei’s first reaction was to immediately turn off the flashlight.
The wind carried him along the ground, his movement was light and silent; the wind spread around him, changing the wind direction and speed, informing Ning Fei of the details of the environment.
He quietly circled around to the place where the sound had come from.
The other party obviously understood that this was Ning Fei’s doing. But this person couldn’t read this flow, and the wind direction, which was sometimes east and sometimes west, made him suddenly nervous. His gun pointed left and then right. There was only one instinctive thought in his mind: danger was approaching!
Finally, at the moment when the strong wind suddenly swept over his face, he seemed to see the wind ability user already close at hand, and immediately pulled the trigger!
Bang!
The gunshot tore through the night, and a scream came randomly: “Ahhh!!!”
Hit! He thought. But he quickly realized that the distance of the scream was wrong. The source was too far away, at least seven or eight meters away. He had hit someone in a nearby tent!
But before he could carefully distinguish, he only felt a chill on his neck, followed by a slight stinging sensation. His brain hadn’t realized what this meant, but instinctively turned the gun towards the direction he sensed someone. However, as soon as he turned around, his wrist was suddenly grabbed and twisted forcefully, and a huge wind force slammed him to the ground!
The moment he fell, his gun was also snatched away.
“You shoot without seeing the target? Do you want me to teach you?”
Ning Fei stepped on the opponent’s chest with so much force that he felt he could break his ribs, and pointed the gun at the opponent’s head: “The sights, some guns have a triangular sight, and you can shoot when it’s on the person. Oh, this gun is square. Square ones are even simpler, just move it over to frame the person. You don’t need to pay money or calculate anything, just pull the trigger. Did you even frame him?”
The person on the ground made a wheezing sound, struggling, suffering, but unable to let out a single wail. Blood was rushing into his throat, and he began to suffocate and couldn’t breathe. He belatedly realized that the wind ability user’s dagger had cut his aorta.
He wanted to beg for mercy, to ask for help, but it was too late.
Ning Fei was still saying quietly: “Do you understand? Do you need me to make a tutorial with pictures and texts? Just as a reward for this gun… Oh, it seems you can’t use it anymore.”
A person will die from blood loss, but the person on the ground couldn’t wait until then. Suffocation was making him quickly lose strength and consciousness.
He entered the most painful dying moment.
“Then let’s change the reward, give you a bullet back, leave early and have peace.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Ning Fei pulled the trigger.
Bang!!!
“You see, shoot when you see the person, it’s that simple.”
*
That night, no one dared to provoke Ning Fei again.
Ning Fei later mentioned the incident of killing a robber to Yu Zhou. Yu Zhou didn’t care and said it was a small matter, as long as Yue Fengping didn’t know, everything would be fine. So these two debt collectors easily hid the matter. This is a story for later.
And Ning Fei successfully entered the Hui Chuan base the day after the incident.
Although he was carrying a gun and a dagger that had just killed someone, no one cared too much about where these weapons came from, or what they had been used for, at this time. Therefore, even though the gun was obviously “hand-crafted” and modified, the staff only made a simple note during registration. Ning Fei then paid an entrance fee of 20 points, and he was allowed to pass.
After all, a level three wind ability user was welcomed by a large base like Hui Chuan, and they wouldn’t make things difficult for him.
Ning Fei went straight to the Ability User Center to report. In order to quickly approach the research and development team, he had to speed up his steps to break into the middle and high levels of Hui Chuan. Still because of his wind ability level, he smoothly entered the internal ranks of Hui Chuan’s ability user team.
The task execution of Hui Chuan was also in the “military police + ability user + X” mode. But instead of directly mixing the military police and ability users into a small team, and then taking the entire team out to perform tasks; there were separate military police formations and ability user groups, and they were drawn and matched when performing tasks. There were advantages and disadvantages to doing so. Ning Fei didn’t comment. Anyway, what he had to do was to understand the rules and use them. “Becoming the rules” was not necessary for the time being. He was here to be an undercover agent, not to be the top leader.
Ning Fei’s level, plus his (newly created) combat experience, could theoretically make him the captain of an ability user team. However, since he was new here, he was first assigned to a team as a vice-captain.
Ning Fei had no objections. He fully utilized the setting of a “speed-running passerby” character, listened to the captain’s command, didn’t casually command the old team members, did his own thing within a small range, and also rescued two team members along the way. So, in the continuous two-month assessment, the team captain didn’t point out any mistakes with Ning Fei, but instead gave him a lot of praise. He also suggested that in the future, for medium and large tasks, they could jointly apply with Ning Fei’s team, because doing tasks with him was quite comfortable.
Faced with the other party’s team invitation, Ning Fei smiled and agreed on the surface, and then forgot about it completely. He wanted him to continue being worldly after the team was divided? Dream on.
The first two months were more like his vice-captain internship period, rather than Hui Chuan base’s “loyalty assessment period.” After this stage, Ning Fei officially had the title of captain, moved into a more spacious single dormitory, and had more authority. He moved around with the “ability team captain” identity certification, and the staff wouldn’t be too suspicious.
In this way, Ning Fei ran to the cafeteria at lunchtime one day, ordered a few good dishes, and bought snacks and drinks, and sat down at a public table.
This was a long table. Diagonally across from him was a family of three, or to be more accurate, a mother and two sons. The mother looked tired and haggard, and looked like she was over forty-five, but Ning Fei knew she had just passed her forty-second birthday. The older daughter was ten years old and was now able to sit and eat properly by herself. However, her plate was bland, with minced meat and green peas that were good for eating with rice, but there was little minced meat and little oil in the green peas. The other child was a five-year-old boy who couldn’t sit still. He took a few bites of rice and ran around. Although his mother didn’t grab him to eat, her eyes were always on him. If he ran too far, his mother would open her mouth and call him back.
And Ning Fei’s sumptuous lunch immediately attracted the boy’s attention.
He ran over, pointed to the rare soda drink on the table, and asked, “This, is it soda?”
Ning Fei rarely responded to the boy with patience: “Yes, it’s soda.”
The boy’s eyes lit up, and he asked, “I knew it! I drank it once, it’s sweet and has bubbles in it!”
Ning Fei replied: “Yes, it’s sweet, and it’s especially delicious.”
The boy finally couldn’t help but move closer to him: “Can I have a sip? I really want to drink soda!”
Ning Fei was silent, seeming a little embarrassed.
Seconds later, the boy’s mother seemed to realize her son’s situation, and her face sank as she stopped him: “Fanfan, you can’t be so rude, don’t disturb other people’s meals. The drink was bought by that uncle, you have your own lunch, come back quickly!”
