Chapter Index

“Why won’t you let me see?”

Ning Fei pulled Duan Yunhong’s hand away, glancing at him, “If you want to see, go get another telescope yourself.”

Duan Yunhong said, “You seem to be getting more and more unhappy as you watch.”

“You understand again?” Ning Fei took back the telescope from his hand, “Don’t act in front of me, and you can’t control me either. Don’t take yourself too seriously, Director Duan.”

“Someone was burning just now?” Although Duan Yunhong didn’t use the telescope, he could still see the general outline. A moving, strangely shaped fire – he could tell at a glance that it was a human being burning.

Ning Fei had already raised the telescope again, coldly saying, “Look for yourself if you want to know.”

Duan Yunhong said, “If you want to know who’s name was written, the casino will announce it. If you want to know who wrote it and how they wrote it, ask another question, and the casino will tell you. You knew from the start that this rule would inevitably lead to unrest, turmoil, and bloodshed, so isn’t this scene what you expected? Why stay up all night to come here and personally watch the burning of a living person that you don’t want to see?”

“Are you deaf?” Ning Fei abruptly turned his head to stare at him, “I told you not to guess about me, and not to stand here acting superior, do you have to be such a cheapskate?”

He suddenly spoke so harshly, obviously on purpose. Duan Yunhong narrowed his eyes slightly, but still suppressed his temper, insisting on expressing his thoughts: “Guessing? Do you dare face the real thoughts in your heart, to truly feel whether you want to see it or not?”

“I said I want to see it, and you insist I admit I don’t want to see it. Do you think only you are right in this world? Classic, so classic, this is the robber logic of you ‘fortune thieves’!” Ning Fei was most annoyed by Duan Yunhong’s routine, coldly sneering, “And whether I want to or not, whether I watch or not, is none of your business! Who are you to me? At best, you’re a simp who slept with me a few times and helped me kill a few people, and then automatically leveled up and want to control me?”

“Because I can’t stand you torturing yourself like this, clearly not wanting to watch but forcing yourself to!”

Duan Yunhong was finally provoked by his words. He knew this was Ning Fei’s emotional trap, but he still jumped in. The man held Ning Fei’s hand with the telescope, continuing, “You said you were just treating this as a game, as entertainment, but what about now? Now that the common people have started rioting, risking their lives to write names, just waiting for you to save them, you can’t sit still and had to come watch.

“The reason you have to come watch is just because they are believers who are additionally sacrificing their lives under your ‘game rules’. They are ignorant and blind, but if you hadn’t come up with this, they wouldn’t be dying now, dying in such large numbers, and dying so tragically. This is even worse than you killing them with your own hands, because they have really started to believe in you. You’re staring with your eyes open as they set themselves on fire, forcing yourself to bear that sense of guilt, forcibly pulling the guilt, responsibility, and karma onto yourself to torment yourself!

“The reason you have to watch them burn is because you also want to ‘burn’ yourself. You came back to this world to throw yourself into the fire. Stop pushing yourself into the fire pit, Ning Fei, you’ve been detached from this world for a long time!”

Duan Yunhong, throwing caution to the wind, said such a long paragraph, originally prepared to be rebutted by Ning Fei.

Perhaps a stern rebuttal, perhaps a torrent of abuse, or perhaps just purely trampling Duan Yunhong’s personality to death, Duan Yunhong had anticipated all of it. But after he finished speaking, Ning Fei just stared at him coldly.

Then, he forcefully pulled his hand back, coldly saying, “Get out.”

    Duan Yunhong said, “I won’t.”

Ning Fei got up to leave, and Duan Yunhong quickly grabbed his hand again. Ning Fei struggled again, but couldn’t break free. He raised his hand and chopped at the man’s wrist. Duan Yunhong let go first, but in the next instant, he also got up and flipped over the sofa. Just as he landed, Ning Fei’s fist came fiercely, the force of the punch biting! Duan Yunhong didn’t block it head-on, but dodged by tilting his head, then went to grab Ning Fei again. In the cramped space of the small attic, the two of them started fighting.

But Duan Yunhong only wanted to control Ning Fei, while Ning Fei kept attacking, even drawing his personal dagger. He didn’t care whether the next move would hit his head, whether it would smash into the sofa, he just attacked, attacked, and attacked again, ruthlessly stabbing his dagger in Duan Yunhong’s direction. It was Duan Yunhong who, seeing that Ning Fei’s head was about to hit the corner of the table squarely, pulled him back. Ning Fei seemed to be waiting for this move of his, seizing his shoulders, flipping and pressing, and then pinning Duan Yunhong down!

    Bang!

Duan Yunhong fell to the ground, and Ning Fei’s dagger was also pressed against his throat.

“Can’t you understand human speech, huh?” Ning Fei stared down at Duan Yunhong, “Does it take death to make you learn to shut up?”

The tip of the dagger even touched the skin of his neck, the cold sensation giving the illusion that he had already started bleeding.

Duan Yunhong didn’t care at all, even laughing madly, raising his hand to weakly grasp the blade of the dagger: “Kill me. Anyway, even if you kill me, I’ll come back again. Even if you use light magic to cleanse me ten times, I’ll still stop you from doing this. Because I’ve made a decision, I won’t stand by and watch you self-destruct like this – I will definitely hold you back!”

He didn’t grab hard, but the sharp dagger still caused blood to seep out from his palm. A thin, small line, slowly falling.

“…Do you think you’re especially great, saying you’re going to save me for no reason, and I should be grateful to you?!” Ning Fei was simply amused to the point of laughter, “Arbitrarily judging that I’m self-destructing, coming to save me on your own, what right do you have? Do you think you’re a god above me? Get your delusions treated early, don’t go crazy outside!”

“I’m not a god above you, and I’m indeed not yet anyone to you, but I’ve decided to meddle in this. You set the rules, others want to enter the game with their lives, that’s their choice. Others are willing to use their lives to exchange for an opportunity, that’s also their choice. Can you stop randomly carrying people’s lives on your back, stop taking responsibility for others?”

Ning Fei seemed to be attracted by the blood dripping on Duan Yunhong’s neck and sliding to the ground beside him, remaining silent.

Two seconds later, Ning Fei gave an irrelevant answer, “Carrying people’s lives on my back is nothing, the number of people I’ve killed is beyond your imagination.”

“Guessed it. What a joke, you’ve never shown much of a purely good side, you haven’t even pretended to, would I care about that?” Duan Yunhong didn’t seem to feel the pain of his fingers being cut, continuing, “Whether you want to save the world or destroy it, it’s all in your mind. Even if you want to repeatedly revise it, it doesn’t matter, I’m willing to help you. But no matter what, this isn’t something you have to do. You’re not a god of this world, and you don’t have the responsibility to control its life or death, and it doesn’t deserve to be the cage that binds you. Your broken Bureau only manages fortune, what are you shouldering the whole world for?”

Ning Fei smiled mockingly: “At this time, you still want to take the opportunity to belittle the Bureau, to make me betray the Bureau and become a bandit?”

“No, although I look down on the Bureau, I suddenly feel grateful for its existence.” Duan Yunhong also suddenly realized at some point that one of the most important reasons why Ning Fei chose to be constrained by the Bureau for so long and not leave was probably because he also desired “self-help” in his heart.

The Bureau still has some constraints on its members’ behavior, and it also gives clear action goals. Ning Fei is driven to act by work, and is restricted by the Bureau’s rules and regulations, so he has much less time to let his thoughts run wild.

Thinking of this, Duan Yunhong added, “Don’t defect, at least until the shackles on you in this world are completely gone, just be exploited by the Bureau in peace.”

“F*ck your mother…” Ning Fei was truly amused by his absurd statement, couldn’t help but curse, and then suddenly pulled out the dagger.

Very straight, very fast, but without any warning, not giving Duan Yunhong any mental preparation. Duan Yunhong only felt a sharp, piercing pain in his fingers and palm. Ning Fei had already gotten up from him.

He even bent down, grabbed his collar, wiped the blood from both sides of the dagger clean, and then stood up straight and put the dagger away.

After putting away the dagger, Ning Fei turned his head and realized that Duan Yunhong hadn’t gotten up yet. Not only was he lying down, but he was also holding up his slashed left palm, looking at it over and over again. Blood dripped on the front of his clothes, staining a small bloodstain.

Ning Fei kicked him speechlessly: “Aren’t you getting up, trying to scam me?”

“I just suddenly remembered the third time we met.” Duan Yunhong turned his palm towards him, letting him see the scars on his palm and fingers, “You were covered in blood back then, but the worst injuries were on your hands. They were also sword cuts, plus a few burns.”

“Nonsense, I had dog blood on me back then, there weren’t any injuries anywhere else.”

“Then you were also deliberately grabbing the sword back then? Those kinds of charlatan scammers couldn’t hurt you at all, right?”

“…None of your business.” Ning Fei felt that this guy was going to say some nonsense analysis like “self-destruction” again, which was really enough. So Ning Fei tore off the hem of his clothes and grabbed the strip of cloth, changing the topic: “Perfect, I’ll take this opportunity to repay Director Duan’s kindness, and bandage Director Duan up.”

Duan Yunhong really got up and reached out for him to bandage it. Ning Fei’s movements were very rough, and it was more like forcefully making him bleed more and hurt more than helping him stop the bleeding. Duan Yunhong certainly felt it, but he just kept a straight face, as if a small pain was not worth paying attention to.

Ning Fei certainly knew his own strength, and after finishing the bandage, seeing Duan Yunhong put on that deadpan look again, he unceremoniously sneered.

After they messed around like this, the action on the square had basically ended. At least the chaotic and noisy commotion had lessened a lot. It was unknown how many people had died on the scene, and how much blood had been shed. Although Ning Fei had just seen the scene of the conflict, had seen Salai, he couldn’t see the words written on the ground, and he didn’t know which nobleman Salai had a feud with. Fortunately, the casino’s news channels were still well-informed, and before long, someone came to tell them the first-hand news.

“Those people actually used torches to poke the ground, and poured kerosene on the ground, using fire to burn out the names!” the messenger said with emotion, “I’ve never seen names written like this. It is said that after the fire burns out, the marks left on the ground are especially deep, and it will definitely be difficult to erase…”

Ning Fei interrupted him: “Who did they write?”

“Oh, oh!” The messenger quickly came back to his senses, replying, “This is really going to be a rebellion –

“They wrote the names of the King and the Prince!”
