    Chapter 223: Let’s Divorce

The emotions swirling deep within Gu Changxuan’s eyes momentarily froze when he heard the name “Yu Qin.”

A moment later, he lowered his gaze to hide the complex feelings in his eyes, and when he looked up again, his expression was calm.

“I indeed didn’t tell you the truth about this,” he said softly, a hint of guilt in his voice, “But I was afraid you’d be jealous. After all, she’s gone, and it’s all in the past.”

After he finished speaking, his eyes fixed intently on Ji Shutíng. “The person I love now is you. Don’t be like this because of someone who has passed away, okay?”

Ji Shutíng looked at the man before her, pretending to be calm, and clutched her sleeve tightly in her hand:

“Yes! From the moment I discovered the portrait, my thoughts were just as you said. Day and night, I suppressed that hint of jealousy in my heart, unwilling to compete with a deceased person for a place in your heart.”

Tears welled up in her eyes, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall. “But in the end, I realized I was wrong, terribly wrong. Your heart is clearly full of her, and it seems I don’t even have that one place.”

Her voice choked with emotion as she asked Gu Changxuan, “Between us, was it all just a pretense from the very beginning?”

Gu Changxuan looked at Ji Shutíng’s appearance, and a strange feeling of discomfort arose in his heart.

He reached out to brush a strand of hair away from Ji Shutíng’s forehead. “No, you are my wife. How could I not have you in my heart?”

“Don’t be difficult. I know you resent me for helping Shi Yan, but birds choose trees to perch on. How can matters of the court be swayed by the friendship between women?”

“Besides, they’ve already divorced. The Crown Prince has abandoned Miss Jiang.”

Ji Shutíng didn’t avoid Gu Changxuan’s hand, but only looked at him indifferently, and said calmly, “It’s not for the Crown Prince, nor do I understand or want to interfere in court politics, but I know that there’s risk involved in taking sides.”

“Winning is a great achievement, but what about losing?” She looked directly at Gu Changxuan, questioning:

“Have you thought about your own situation? Have you thought about my situation? When the time comes, our whole family will have to pay the price for your choice.”

Gu Changxuan took Ji Shutíng’s hand and comforted her gently:

“Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. Not to mention the current obvious situation, but also as for taking sides, I’m just one of the crowd in the court. No one knows we’re secretly close.”

“So, even if there is that one in ten thousand chance, I won’t be sentenced to death. At most, I’ll no longer hold an important position.”

Not sentenced to death? Ji Shutíng sneered inwardly. He hid it well, but her own brother was in the eye of the storm.

Gu Changxuan continued to patiently coax her, “Don’t worry about matters of the court, and don’t think too much about that portrait, okay? She’s just a lingering memory of mine.”

Ji Shutíng stared unblinkingly at Gu Changxuan and stubbornly asked:

“Okay, I won’t ask about anything before. I’ll only ask if you love me now. If… if Miss Yu Qin appeared before you right now, who would you choose, her or me?”

Gu Changxuan seemed not to have expected Ji Shutíng to ask such a question. His eyes froze for a moment, and then he immediately said:

“Of course, I’d choose you. You are my wife. No matter when, where, or why, I would choose you.”

Ji Shutíng’s earlier anger seemed to have dissipated, but it seemed that even the energy flowing through her body had disappeared with it.

She seemed unwilling to argue with him anymore. “Okay, I like hearing that. Husband, would you be willing to write it down in black and white and give it to me?”

Upon hearing this, Gu Changxuan’s heart relaxed, and he looked at Ji Shutíng with a joyful expression. “Okay, husband will write it a hundred times for you.”

As he said this, he pulled Ji Shutíng up and walked towards the study.

At this moment, he felt that as long as it could make Ji Shutíng feel better, he was genuinely willing to write it a hundred times.

In front of the desk, Ji Shutíng stood beside Gu Changxuan, grinding the ink. Her movements were slow and gentle, seemingly calm.

As Gu Changxuan lifted his brush to write, she put down the ink stick and slowly walked to the other side of Gu Changxuan, taking advantage of his inattention to open the drawer on the left side of his desk.

“Shu Ting, you…?” Seeing this, Gu Changxuan put down his brush and looked at Ji Shutíng in astonishment.

Ji Shutíng quickly took a step back, creating distance between herself and Gu Changxuan. Without saying a word, she quickly tore the portrait in her hand in half.

Just as she was about to tear it into pieces, her hands were suddenly grabbed by Gu Changxuan. The force was so strong that her heart turned cold.

Gu Changxuan snatched the portrait from her hand and angrily pushed her backward, causing Ji Shutíng to crash into the bookshelf beside her.

The pain in her chest left her with no time to care about the pain in her back. She looked in disappointment at the person who had snatched the portrait away, supported herself on the bookshelf to stand up straight, and slowly said, “Let’s divorce!”

Upon hearing this, Gu Changxuan shifted his gaze from the damaged portrait, looked up at Ji Shutíng, and asked in disbelief, “What did you say?”

    “I said, let’s divorce.”

“Impossible.” Gu Changxuan walked to Ji Shutíng’s side, his voice mixed with a hint of panic.

“I’ve already said that you are my wife now. Why do you have to be at odds with a portrait or a deceased person?”

Ji Shutíng held back her tears and lowered her eyes to look at the portrait in his hand that she had torn in half.

“You keep saying deceased, but she clearly still lives in your heart, and I’m just a wife who’s not even as good as a portrait. This wife… I don’t want it.”

“You…” Gu Changxuan was stunned by the resolute look in Ji Shutíng’s eyes and was momentarily speechless. After a moment, he said, “Calm down. Marriage is not a game.”

Ji Shutíng looked at Gu Changxuan’s back as he turned to leave and quickly said:

“Don’t worry, even if we divorce, I won’t hinder your great cause. More importantly, even if I wanted to hinder you, my brother has already been brought down by you.”

“So, even if I don’t consider you, I have to consider my brother. Besides, as you said, the situation in court is already set. I have no use for you anymore.”

“For the sake of my sincerity towards you, just do a good deed and let me go, let me escape from this false marriage.”

Gu Changxuan’s footsteps stopped, and his back stiffened slightly.

He didn’t expect that the girl whose heart and eyes were full of him would now be so eager to leave him.

His eyes flickered slightly, and without turning his head, he said, “You’re angry right now. I won’t argue with you. Divorce is impossible.”

As Gu Changxuan walked out of the courtyard gate, Ji Shutíng’s words that she had betrayed him for the sake of her sweetheart echoed in his mind. So, she had heard that his actions were to avenge Yu Qin.

A trace of regret flashed in his eyes. After closing his eyes, he immediately called a few servants to guard the door.

It was true that he had pulled Ji Huaizhou into the game, but if she impulsively ran back to the Gu mansion and talked nonsense, it was hard to guarantee that Ji Huaizhou wouldn’t temporarily defect.

He sighed, and only today did he realize that her character was so fierce.
