Chapter Index

Wen Di was fed another empty promise.

Then what do you want to eat? Lu Huaichu asked, feeling both curious and amused. Only in front of him would the formidable Reporter Wen act like this. It felt good! Very satisfying!

I want spicy strips, Wen Di said without hesitation.

    Your stomach…

The really numbing, extra spicy kind! Ever since he had been with Lu Huaichu, Wen Di had been stripped of his right to enjoy spicy strips freely. He immediately cut off Lu Huaichu’s nagging.

Violent resistance and passive defiance both proved futile. Wen Di could not understand how a hand meant for a scalpel could be so strong.

… Lu Huaichu frowned at Wen Di, but his hands did not stop. He scooped a spoonful of porridge and held it to Wen Di’s lips. His gaze was so tender it could melt into silk, but his tone brooked no argument. Not right now. Once your stomach is better, I will buy you as many as you want, baby.

Unable to vent his frustration, Wen Di could only bite down hard on the spoon and glare at Lu Huaichu with puffed-out cheeks.

Here, eat. Take your time. Lu Huaichu pulled the spoon out and tucked it into Wen Di’s hand, his tone full of doting affection.

The two of them squeezed onto the small two-seater sofa to eat lunch slowly. Wen Di took a sip of the porridge. It was bland—incredibly bland. He set the bowl down and leaned back comfortably against the sofa, watching Lu Huaichu eat heartily. He could not understand how such bland food could taste so good to him.

Lu Huaichu, the editor-in-chief fed me another empty promise this morning. Wen Di closed his eyes and unceremoniously shoved his legs into Lu Huaichu’s lap.

What did he say? Lu Huaichu naturally lifted the hem of his sweater and tucked Wen Di’s slightly cold feet inside, then continued gnawing on a pork rib.

He said the report I wrote will definitely win an award. And if it does, I can be promoted to deputy head of the editorial department. He didn’t even stop to think—how many people are eyeing that promotion? How could one report lead to a promotion? If I actually took that position, those people would be so angry they would swallow me alive.

Just thinking about it gave Wen Di a headache. He had witnessed the turbulent undercurrents of the Radio and Television Center when he first joined. Few people in the media circle were easy to deal with. After joining the Anzhou Times, Wen Di had volunteered for the grueling role of an investigative reporter. He did it for no other reason than to use the excuse of field research to get out of the office and reduce the time spent suffering from the mental pollution there.

Lu Huaichu finally finished the last pork rib and efficiently cleared the leftovers from the table. Which report? The one you were investigating at our hospital?

Yeah, that one. Wen Di pulled his feet out and sat cross-legged. Seeing Lu Huaichu use a tissue to wipe even the condensation off the food containers, Wen Di’s lips twitched. This was probably a common trait among doctors. It definitely wasn’t that his boyfriend had OCD or was a germaphobe, right?

Baby, wait for me a moment. His slender fingers tied the trash bag into a perfect butterfly knot. After throwing it into the hallway bin, Lu Huaichu rushed back to wash his hands for a full minute before pulling Wen Di into his arms.

That just shows how capable my baby is! Besides, if you are unhappy, just quit. I will support you. I won’t be a doctor anymore either; I will just go home and be a rich second-generation heir. Lu Huaichu wrapped his arms around Wen Di and kissed his temple. His hand naturally moved to Wen Di’s stomach, gently rubbing in circles. Rest for a bit before taking your medicine.

Having eaten something, Wen Di finally regained some energy. He really wants to screw me over! Not a single leader is a good person! Wait, that’s not right. Who would be a good person and still become a leader?

Lu Huaichu, who had just been promoted to Associate Chief Physician, rubbed the tip of his nose awkwardly. You can’t be that absolute… I think I’m pretty good to the juniors in the department…

That’s true. Sigh, wouldn’t it be great if you were my boss? Lu Huaichu…

    Hmm?

Can you just buy the Anzhou Times?

… The air stilled for a moment. They looked at each other and suddenly burst into laughter.

If I bought the Anzhou Times, my baby wouldn’t have to work. You could sit in the office every day, drinking tea and reading the paper. When you’re happy, you sign some papers; when you’re not, you scold your subordinates…

Stop, stop, stop! Wouldn’t that make me just as annoying as the editor-in-chief? Wen Di struggled to cover Lu Huaichu’s mouth.

The two of them collapsed into a fit of laughter on the sofa, messing around for a long while before stopping.

Wen Di was laughing so hard he was a bit out of breath. His chest heaved, and his eyelashes were damp with moisture.

Startled, Lu Huaichu quickly began stroking his back to help him catch his breath. Alright, alright, let’s stop playing, baby. Deep breaths, take it slow…

Wen Di finally caught his breath and looked up at Lu Huaichu, who was as tense as if he were defusing a bomb. I’m fine now, don’t be scared…

Lie down for a bit. I’ll go get your medicine.

Watching Lu Huaichu’s retreating figure, Wen Di didn’t realize a smile had already touched his lips.

The feeling of being cherished… was wonderful.

Mom, Dad, I don’t seem… to be so afraid of being alone in this world anymore.

I’ve found someone who makes me willing to let down my guard.

May your spirits in heaven protect us and let us stay together for a long, long time.

And protect Lu Huaichu… may everything go smoothly for him.

What are you thinking about? Lu Huaichu knelt by the arm of the sofa, holding a tray. On it were the IV fluids and needles, along with a few tablets. As soon as he entered, he saw Wen Di staring blankly out the window.

Wen Di pulled back his thoughts and looked at the man kneeling beside him. I was thinking about… you.

Wen Di rarely expressed his love so directly. This sudden confession made Lu Huaichu’s ears turn red instantly.

Thank you, baby. I love you too. Lu Huaichu placed the tray on the coffee table, braced his hands on either side of Wen Di, and leaned down to gently kiss his eyes.

The touch of his lips felt hot; the fever was rising again. Lu Huaichu sighed inwardly and turned to disinfect his hands. Two bags of fluids, then take the medicine.

Mm… I didn’t say I loved you… Wen Di was dazed from the fever. He couldn’t really hear what Lu Huaichu was muttering; he just felt alternating waves of heat and cold.

Lu Huaichu pulled over a small stool from beside the desk and sat opposite Wen Di. He took one of Wen Di’s hands and patted the back of it carefully for a while before finding a tiny vein.

When they first got together, Wen Di had fallen ill, and a nurse had administered the IV. She had poked his hand several times like she was stitching a shoe sole before finding the right spot, which had broken Lu Huaichu’s heart. From then on, whether it was an injection or an IV, Lu Huaichu did it himself. His baby was afraid of pain, and he didn’t trust anyone else to do it.

The needle pierced the skin, and blood began to flow back into the tube. Lu Huaichu immediately released the clamp, and the cool liquid flowed through the thin tube into Wen Di’s body.

Baby… this job is too exhausting. Your body… Lu Huaichu said suddenly as he carefully taped the back of Wen Di’s hand.
