    Chapter 67: Preparing for Rehabilitation

Gu Nian stared at Lin Sui for a long time before slowly lying down.

Five minutes later, a strong arm forcefully wrapped around Lin Sui’s shoulder, pulling him onto the pillow.

Lin Sui opened his eyes and saw Gu Nian looking at him sideways, his arm naturally moving to rest around his waist. He said calmly, “Sleep.”

    “…Okay.”

Lin Sui closed his eyes again, but this time his face was a little red.

Lin Sui originally thought he wouldn’t be able to sleep lying in the same bed as Gu Nian, but in reality, he fell asleep soon after closing his eyes, sinking into a dark dream.

Gu Nian, however, didn’t sleep, and kept watching Lin Sui’s sleeping face, lost in thought.

The clock on the wall ticked away, and time passed second by second. Lin Sui’s eyebrows gradually furrowed, and his long, steady breathing became rapid, an uneasy expression appearing on his face.

“Um…don’t be afraid…I’m okay…” Lin Sui murmured, his voice too mumbled to be understood clearly. Gu Nian leaned closer to try and make out the words, but was instead hugged tightly by the person in his arms. The slender arms wrapped around his body, holding him tightly, as if afraid of being snatched away.

    “Don’t…go…don’t leave…”

Not knowing what he was dreaming about, Lin Sui’s voice suddenly became clearer, and the expression on his face became even more pained, tears seemingly welling up under his eyelids. Gu Nian reached out to touch them, only to realize it was just his imagination.

He looked at his own hand, a momentary daze washing over him.

After a while, perhaps the feeling of fullness in his arms soothed the anxiety in Lin Sui’s subconscious, and Lin Sui quickly calmed down again, his expression returning to peace.

Gu Nian unconsciously patted the young man’s back, absentmindedly wondering if Lin Sui had been crying in his dream.

Thinking about it, it made sense. After experiencing something like that, even if he pretended to be calm on the surface, he must still be scared inside.

And the reason why Lin Sui had to pretend to be relaxed was also obvious.

Gu Nian suddenly felt a little irritable, rubbed his fingers together a few times, and reached out to grab the cigarette from the bedside table, but he retracted his arm almost as soon as he extended it, his arm hanging in the air, unsure of what to do.

He wasn’t actually a heavy smoker, only smoking occasionally when he was upset. He had completely quit after meeting Lin Sui.

Come to think of it, this was the first time he had wanted a cigarette since he and Lin Sui got married.

Gu Nian thought for a while, then carefully picked up his phone. After hesitating again and again, he opened a chat window that he hadn’t opened in a long time, typing and deleting, spending a full half hour before finally sending a brief message.

[Can you send me a copy of the details of the treatment plan you mentioned last time?]

Using a rare tone of request, Gu Nian stared at the chat page with no reply after sending the message, and even felt the urge to withdraw it.

But two minutes had passed, and he couldn’t withdraw it. Gu Nian’s mood was a bit complicated, so he simply locked the phone screen. After a while, he opened it again and changed the contact to “special attention” before tossing it aside.

After doing all this, Gu Nian let out a long sigh, and the stone that had been weighing on his chest felt lighter. Even though he had made a difficult decision, he felt much more relaxed.

Gu Nian closed his eyes and didn’t suffer from insomnia this time, quickly falling asleep while holding Lin Sui.

The two woke up in the evening. Lin Sui had a headache from sleeping, and it took him a few seconds to remember that he had temporarily moved into Gu Nian’s room when he opened his eyes.

Lin Sui leaned against the pillow, openly admiring the beautiful face, happily praising his good taste in his heart.

Soon, Gu Nian also woke up, and as soon as he opened his eyes, he met Lin Sui’s gaze, which could be described as scorching. The corner of his lips curved up a little. “Have you seen enough?”

Lin Sui shook his head, honestly saying, “I don’t think I’ll ever see enough in my lifetime.”

Gu Nian was stunned for a moment, then laughed. He reached out and vigorously ruffled the young man’s messy hair, his voice a bit hoarse from just waking up, extremely sexy: “Don’t starve yourself. Get up and eat. If you eat your fill, I’ll let you look at me for the rest of your life.”

Lin Sui, with a flushed face, climbed out of bed and stumbled out of the room, looking like a rabbit chased by a wolf.

Oh my god, how did Gu Nian suddenly become so flirtatious!

Lin Sui covered his hot face and thought in his heart that it seemed like he needed to speed up his studies.

He had to flirt back! He couldn’t be the only one blushing!

Lin Sui casually cooked some noodles. While boiling water, he took out his phone and found those hundreds of learning materials, and began to study them piously.

On the other side, after Lin Sui went out, Gu Nian slowly retracted the smile on his face, remaining frozen like a statue for a long time before picking up the phone that had been tossed aside like an old robot.

The screen lit up, and a latest message notification was prominently displayed in the reminder bar. Gu Nian suddenly tightened his fingers, his knuckles turning white with force.

A few seconds later, he opened the message.

    Three hours ago.

    [Shared File]

[You finally decided to get rehabilitation? It’s not clear just from the materials. Find some time for me to do an examination for you. We can talk about the specific plan then.]

    Ten minutes ago.

[Why aren’t you replying? You haven’t regretted it, have you?]

After that, there were no more messages. Gu Nian repeatedly read the last sentence over and over, and gave a bitter laugh.

Regret, he did want to regret it.

But now he had a reason why he couldn’t regret it.

The next morning, because Gu Nian needed someone to take care of his arm, Lin Sui continued to sleep in Gu Nian’s room. After being thoroughly influenced by hundreds of thousands of words of learning materials, Lin Sui was obviously much more at ease this time. After waking up, he immediately gave Gu Nian a good morning kiss, recalling the content of the books, and confidently said:

“Good morning, did you dream of me last night?” At the same time, he gave a perfect smile.

Gu Nian was silent for a while, then pinched Lin Sui’s soft cheek, and said grumpily: “Read less of those messy things, don’t learn things randomly.”

Lin Sui pouted unhappily, and mumbled: “You’re not cooperating at all, you should say ‘Yes, I did’ now, and then kiss me back!”

Gu Nian didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, so he had to complete the process and kissed Lin Sui on the corner of his lips.

Lin Sui was finally satisfied and prepared to get up and go downstairs.

“Wait a minute.” Gu Nian said, “There will be a guest coming today, and I need you to be there too, around ten in the morning.”

Lin Sui thought for a while and asked, “Is it like Jiang Sheng?”

Gu Nian hesitated: “I guess so.”

Lin Sui laughed from the bottom of his heart, and said happily: “So a friend is coming, then I have to prepare carefully.”

After speaking, he jumped into the elevator and went downstairs.

Time passed quickly to the agreed time, and Lin Sui arranged the prepared snacks neatly on the coffee table, looking expectantly at the door.

At ten o’clock sharp, the doorbell rang on time, and Lin Sui rushed to the door, raising the brightest smile: “Welcome…uh, who are you?”

Lin Sui looked at the doctor wearing a white coat and carrying a medical kit, and was stunned.

The doctor pushed up his glasses, “Gu Nian asked me to come over.”

Lin Sui said “Oh”, and ushered the person in, scratching his head. He leaned closer to Gu Nian and said in a low voice: “Your friend is very professional, huh?”

To actually wear a white coat when visiting friends, how much did he have to love his profession.

Gu Nian didn’t know how to explain, and said softly to the doctor, “Thank you for your trouble.”

“It’s my duty.” The doctor said in a low voice as he opened the medical kit.

Lin Sui looked at the various instruments taken out of the medical kit and suddenly realized something.

In his previous life, he had spent more than 20 years in the hospital due to his paralyzed legs, and had tried countless rehabilitation methods, so he was very familiar with these things.

Lin Sui stood there blankly, his eyes filled with heat in an instant. Too strong emotions blocked his throat, making him unable to speak for a moment.

“Please step aside.” The doctor said politely.

“Oh, oh, oh, okay.” Lin Sui quickly stepped aside and looked at the doctor examining Gu Nian with anticipation.

Gu Nian sat in a wheelchair, letting the doctor manipulate his numb legs. At first, he felt a little embarrassed and didn’t want Lin Sui to see it, but after a while, he looked at Lin Sui, who seemed more nervous than him, and somehow found it a bit funny, and chuckled softly.

The doctor looked up at him and said lightly, “If there are any psychological problems, you can also contact me. My studio has professional psychologists.”

    Gu Nian: …

    Lin Sui: …

This doctor, your way of speaking is a bit hardcore!

The tense mood of Lin Sui was mostly gone after that, but he still squatted next to him, watching without blinking.

The examination took a long time. After watching for a while, Gu Nian began to feel sorry for Lin Sui and asked him to sit on the sofa and wait.

But Lin Sui shook his head, didn’t say anything, but his attitude was very firm.

Gu Nian had no way to deal with him, so he had to cooperate with the doctor more silently, hoping to end it soon.

Nearly an hour later, the doctor finally put all the instruments back in the medical kit and said, “I still need to go back and discuss the specific situation with my colleagues. I can give you the treatment plan by the end of this week at the latest, but.” The doctor glanced at Lin Sui and pushed his glasses, “The rehabilitation process will be very painful, both psychologically and physically. I hope you are prepared. The family members must also do relevant work.”

Lin Sui nodded immediately like a chicken pecking at rice, and thought for a while and took the initiative to say: “Let me see you off, thank you for your trip.”

The doctor was about to shake his head to indicate that it was unnecessary, but suddenly saw Lin Sui wink at him, and immediately understood: “Thank you.”

The two walked to the door together, and Lin Sui secretly turned his head to look, wanting to see if Gu Nian was looking this way.

“Don’t look, Gu Nian isn’t looking here.” The doctor suddenly opened his mouth, startling Lin Sui.

“Oh, well, I’m just afraid that he will feel stressed if he hears it.” Lin Sui touched his nose and asked in a low voice: “What is the success rate of this rehabilitation?”

The doctor pushed his glasses and said rigorously: “Less than 3%, 60% chance that there will be no effect, 30% will have slight sensation but cannot walk, and the rest may have various serious sequelae, even if recovered, a lot of time is needed for follow-up training. If you are lucky, maybe you can return to normal life.”

Lin Sui nodded and asked, “Can you please not tell Gu Nian this?”

The doctor was a little surprised: “You don’t seem disappointed at all.”

Lin Sui smiled and said softly: “For me, whether Gu Nian can stand up is not the most important thing. I hope he can be happy, that’s enough.”
