    Chapter 30: A Love Rival

Lin Sui walked over in surprise, looking at Gu Nian’s ashen face with concern. “Why are you up so early? Couldn’t sleep? I’ll go heat up some milk for you.”

Gu Nian lifted his eyelids and stared at him. His expression softened slightly, but his tone remained icy. “Don’t change the subject. Answer my question.”

Lin Sui walked to his side and sat down, casually touching his hand to make sure it wasn’t too cold before speaking. “I’m going to the library. I have an exam.”

Gu Nian narrowed his eyes, watching him as if trying to determine if he was telling the truth.

Lin Sui’s face fell as he talked about the exam, muttering with a pout, forgetting to let go of Gu Nian’s hand and unconsciously playing with it as he complained. “I failed too many subjects before. I have a makeup exam the day after tomorrow, and I’m so afraid I won’t pass. Otherwise, I’ll have to retake them.”

His first real experience of attending school was being spent catching up on missed work, which in a way, could be considered a complete life.

Lin Sui consoled himself with this bittersweet thought.

Gu Nian had originally been quite angry, determined to question Lin Sui properly about what was going on. But that plan was defeated from the start. His entire mind was now focused on the hand that Lin Sui was holding. He was as stiff as a board, and upon hearing Lin Sui’s words, he only dryly said, “Is that so?”

Lin Sui took this stiff response surprisingly well, quickly adjusted his mood, and looked up curiously to ask, “Did you ever fail any subjects when you were in school?”

Gu Nian shook his head with a straight face, and the next sentence blurted out, “I was always first in my major.” Damn it, why did he say that?

It made it seem like he was deliberately showing off in front of Lin Sui.

Gu Nian severely condemned himself in his heart, which manifested in an even worse expression on his face.

“Really? That’s amazing.” Lin Sui cooperatively showed an adoring gaze and said with admiration, “If I had studied the same major as you, I definitely wouldn’t be worried about failing the exam now.”

Gu Nian curled his lips, and after Tolerance and tolerate, he couldn’t help but say in a reserved voice, “I’ve also been involved in some art-related fields. You can ask me if you have any questions.”

Lin Sui blinked, then suddenly pounced on Gu Nian and hugged him, nuzzling his ear and happily shaking his head. “Thank you.” His good son has learned to care for his old father. So gratifying.

Gu Nian was caught off guard, and his ears quickly turned red. He turned his head away pretending to be impatient. “Don’t get so close.” But his hand quietly lifted, struggling whether or not to wrap around Lin Sui’s waist.

Lin Sui knew Gu Nian’s tsundere nature, so he was already satisfied with the hug and simply let go, walking towards the kitchen with a refreshed feeling. “I bought cream and strawberries yesterday. I’ll make you some cake for afternoon tea today.”

Gu Nian lowered his eyes and looked at his empty hand, expressionlessly humming in acknowledgment.

However, with this little commotion, he also forgot about Lin Sui’s absence from home these past few days.

Anyway, Lin Sui would return to his previous life after his exam the day after tomorrow. He could wait for this little bit of time.

Lin Sui made the cake as promised, put it in the refrigerator to chill, and then hurried off to the library.

Sitting down at his familiar seat, Lin Sui skillfully took out his textbook and, with a pen in hand, began to study earnestly.

It was not long after the start of the semester, so there were not many people studying here. After ten o’clock, the number of people in the study room gradually increased. Lin Sui heard the sound of a chair being pulled out and then felt someone sit down across from him. He subconsciously looked up.

    “Huh?”

    Lin Sui exclaimed softly.

Why did this person look a little familiar?

Lin Sui stopped writing and thought for a while, finally finding this face in the corner of his memory—the lucky person he had randomly grabbed to ask for directions when he first came to school.

Although they had exchanged WeChat accounts at the time, Lin Sui hadn’t spoken to him since then, except for the initial greeting, because of Shi Qingzhou’s helpful guidance.

Lin Sui gave a polite smile. “Long time no see. You’re here to study too?”

The boy nodded, his face red, and seemed to hesitate for a moment before gathering his courage to speak. “If you have any questions recently, you can contact me. I’m mostly free.”

After saying this, he looked at Lin Sui anxiously.

To be honest, he knew that Lin Sui had no romantic interest in him, but love required taking the initiative. After that day, he always thought about this junior. When he saw him in the library just now, he suddenly had a feeling of fate’s arrangement, and he rushed over in a moment of impulse.

Lin Sui was stunned and didn’t understand the deeper meaning of his words, so he earnestly explained, “My roommate is helping me with everything, but thank you anyway.”

In the eyes of others, this sentence was equivalent to a rejection. The boy awkwardly and disappointedly said, “Oh,” but he didn’t give up. “I still don’t know your name. Can we be friends?”

Lin Sui nodded and smiled. “My name is Lin Sui. I’m happy to be friends with you.”

“My name is Lin Lin, the Lin of Qilin.” Lin Lin quickly introduced himself, then laughed at himself. “My name is quite strange, right? You can just call me Brother Lin.”

Lin Sui suddenly raised the book in his hand when he heard the latter title. “You might have misunderstood. I’m a senior this year, so I should be a few years older than you.” After a pause, Lin Sui awkwardly tried to salvage his dignity. “I had some things happen before, so I haven’t been to school for a long time. I just couldn’t find the place that day.”

Lin Lin’s eyes widened, and his mouth dropped open in surprise. It took him a long time to lift his chin back up, and he stammered as if he was about to cry, “I’m, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.” Oh god, he even said that the other person could ask him questions, but it turned out that he was a senior!

He felt like his toes were about to dig out a villa. Lin Lin lowered his head, embarrassed and wanting to disappear.

Lin Sui understandingly skipped the topic. Seeing that he didn’t want to talk for a while, he lowered his head to continue reviewing.

After a while, the sound of flipping pages resumed across from him.

The library was very quiet, and the slight white noise made it easier to calm down. Lin Sui quickly forgot about this little interlude and recited a large chapter in one breath until he felt dizzy and went to get a drink of water.

The cold liquid flowed down his throat, bringing a burst of refreshment. Lin Sui glanced at his phone while drinking and realized that it was already past one in the afternoon.

His stomach also rumbled at the right time.

Lin Sui guiltily covered the source of the sound, carefully looking around to make sure no one noticed before he breathed a sigh of relief and got up to go to the cafeteria to see if there was any lunch left.

Just as he walked out of his seat, another figure walked in from the door, holding a plastic bag in his hand, waving in Lin Sui’s direction from afar.

Lin Sui subconsciously turned his head to look, but only saw the bright and clean glass and his reflection on it. After a while, he realized that he was probably the one being called, so he quickly walked to the door.

“Senior, this is for you.” Lin Lin adapted well to his new title. Before Lin Sui could refuse, he stuffed the plastic bag into his hand, smiling innocently. “I saw that you were reading, so I guessed you forgot the time. I just went to the cafeteria and brought you a portion.”

Lin Sui held the lunchbox, feeling a little at a loss. He subconsciously started to say, “I’ll transfer the money to you—”

“No need.” Lin Lin shook his head without thinking, his tone surprisingly firm. Lin Sui was stunned. He was about to continue speaking when he saw him suddenly put his hands together and give him a pleading look. “It’s like this, Senior. I want to go to a lecture, but it’s my first time going, and I’m a little scared to go alone. My roommates all Dislike that the credits for attending lectures are too low, so…”

He didn’t finish his sentence, but his expression was even more sincere.

Lin Sui suddenly understood. “You want me to go with you?”

Lin Lin nodded quickly. “Yes. I know Senior is busy, but I really can’t find anyone to go with me for the time being. So, Senior, for the sake of this lunch, please go with me.”

Lin Sui knew from the internet that many people were used to doing everything together, whether it was eating, going to class, or going to the bathroom, so he didn’t suspect anything. After hesitating slightly, he agreed.

Lin Lin’s eyes lit up, and his smile became even brighter. “Thank you for your help, Senior. The lecture starts at three o’clock in the afternoon, and the location is in our school’s auditorium. I asked someone to help me reserve seats in the front row. I’ll send you the specific location when the time comes.”

Lin Sui nodded Quite ignorant, and his time after three o’clock was arranged without him realizing it.

Lin Lin knew when to stop and didn’t continue to pester him. He thanked him again and then couldn’t wait to run back to his dorm. His steps were so excited that he felt like he was flying. He had to hurry up and dress up nicely to leave a good impression on his senior!

Lin Sui watched him leave, touching the still-warm lunchbox in his arms. He couldn’t help but sigh that there were indeed many good people in college.

However, the reason he agreed wasn’t because of this meal, but because of—credits.

The original owner was just someone who coasted through life, not attending many classes in his major. He hadn’t been expelled yet only because the Lin family couldn’t afford to lose face and used their connections to keep him in school. As a result, the original owner was even more unscrupulous, and now he didn’t have enough credits to graduate.

Lin Sui didn’t aspire to be a top student, but since this was his first time really attending school, he still wanted to get a diploma and wear a graduation gown to take graduation photos like other young people enjoying their youth.

For this little dream, Lin Sui was now not only catching up on missed work but also paying attention to activities that could add credits. Lin Lin’s request was like someone offering a pillow when he was sleepy.

Lin Sui quickly finished lunch and continued reading until two-thirty, then got up and walked towards the entrance of the auditorium, where he happened to meet Lin Lin.

“Wow.” As soon as they met, Lin Sui couldn’t help but exclaim in amazement, his eyes fixed on Lin Lin’s hair, which seemed to have used up a whole can of hairspray. He was a little puzzled. “Is the lecturer this time very young?” Otherwise, why would he be acting like a peacock courting a mate?

    “…”

The smile with eight teeth gradually stiffened.

Lin Lin had been standing here for ten minutes just to cheer himself up, secretly tidying up his hair in front of his phone for a long time. As a result, Lin Sui’s words completely deflated him. He forced a smile and said, “It’s okay. It’s an outstanding alumnus of our school, quite famous in the oil painting world, probably around thirty years old.”

Lin Sui nodded earnestly, but in reality, he only had credits in his mind. Lin Lin secretly smoothed down his towering hairstyle, knowing that this opening was probably a failure. He now wished that Lin Sui would quickly forget this part and led him into the venue.

Once inside, Lin Sui realized that there were more people in the auditorium than he had imagined. It was an understatement to say that it was crowded; some people had even brought small stools and were squeezed into the corners.

Lin Sui paused, finally vaguely sensing that something was wrong.

How did this look… not like a boring lecture that only credit-hungry students would attend?
