Chapter 22 The singing competition begins

The spotlight drew a soft arc behind the host. As his clear voice fell, the noise in the audience seemed to have been pressed on the mute button, leaving only sporadic sounds of seat movement and breathing.

“Teachers and students, welcome to the ‘Voice Campus’ singing competition!” The host held a microphone and stood in the center of the stage with a bright smile.

“Tonight the stars are shining brightly, and singing is the wings. Let us witness young girls conveying their love and stories with their voices. Next, the competition officially begins. First of all, we invite the first contestant, Chen Zimo from the Department of Computer Science, to bring us “Evening Star Falls”!”

Amidst thunderous applause, a boy wearing a black hooded sweater slowly walked onto the stage.

He was thin and his hair was slightly long, covering half of his eyebrows. When he walked to the center of the stage, he lowered his head slightly to adjust the height of the microphone.

The accompaniment of the piano sounded softly, with a touch of sadness, instantly bringing the atmosphere of the scene to silence.

Chen Zimo’s voice was low and magnetic, like a private whisper late at night.

“When the evening star falls, the promises you made are like sand scattered in the wind…”

The lyrics are straightforward and heart-wrenching, and paired with his slightly hoarse singing voice, he vividly interprets the regret and melancholy after a broken love.

The lights on the stage were adjusted to a deep blue-purple color. The interplay of light and shadow, the boy’s slightly frowned brows and the loneliness in his eyes made many audience members hold their breath.

Lu Jin leaned on the back of the chair and tapped the armrest with his fingers unconsciously.

A girl in the front row quietly took out a tissue to wipe the corners of her eyes, and a low sigh came from the back row.

He subconsciously glanced at Zhou Yan beside him and saw that he was leaning forward slightly.

His eyes were focused on the stage, his fingers were gently placed on his knees, tapping gently to the rhythm of the melody, his expression serious as if he was appreciating a work of art.

“Are you so devoted?” Lu Jin muttered in his heart, then looked away, his eyes drifting involuntarily towards the backstage of the stage.

I don’t know how prepared Xie Shuhan is.

Lu Jin’s heart couldn’t help but pound when he thought of Xie Shuhan standing under the light. The low mood aroused by the song was instantly replaced by expectation.

Chen Zimo’s singing ended with the last long coda, and the sound of the piano gradually disappeared. The scene was quiet for two seconds, and then burst into warm applause.

The host came up to the stage again and said with a smile: “Thank you, classmate Chen Zimo, for your soulful performance. It’s really heart-wrenching! Next, let’s invite the second contestant, Lin Wan from the financial management major. The song she brought is “Nobody Knows”!”

Different from Chen Zimo’s low tone, Lin Wan has a cool temperament as soon as he appears.

She was wearing a white dress, with long hair shawl, holding a microphone in her hand, standing quietly in the center of the stage.

The accompaniment sounded, a soothing but lonely guitar music, and Lin Wan’s voice was as clear as spring water, but with a hint of unnoticeable choking, as if she was telling a secret that no one understood.

“Through the crowds, I can’t find anyone who understands me. Loneliness is like a tide, drowning me in the dusk…”

Her singing is extremely penetrating, and every note is like a thin needle, gently piercing the softest part of the human heart.

The spotlights on the stage followed her closely, making her figure look even more lonely. The audience was immersed in this ultimate emo atmosphere, and even their breathing became softer.

Lu Jin did not look at Zhou Yan again this time. Although his eyes fell on the stage, his mind was already far away.

All he could think about now was Xie Shuhan.

    How long until he appears?

    Third place, soon?

Emotions of anticipation and nervousness intertwined in his heart, making him restless and tapping his fingers on the armrest a little faster.

Yu Yifan was sitting next to him, aware of his anxiety, and quietly came over and whispered: “Brother Jin, don’t worry, we will be at Xie Shuhan soon.”

Lu Jin glanced sideways at him and lowered his voice: “Who’s in a hurry? I just took a look.”

Yu Yifan suppressed his laughter, stopped talking, and turned to look at the stage.

Lin Wan’s singing was coming to an end. Her voice gradually rose higher, with a hint of relief and a hint of unwillingness, and finally ended on a high note.

The scene fell into brief silence again, and then the applause was even more enthusiastic than before, and many audience members stood up and applauded her.

The host walked onto the stage with an appreciative smile on his face: “Thank you Lin Wan for your wonderful singing. It really touched everyone’s heart! Next, we will ask the judges to give scores to the top two contestants.”

The five teachers at the judges’ table lowered their heads to deliberate for a moment, and then showed their scores one by one.

Chen Zimo scored a good score of 8.6 points, while Lin Wan scored 8.9 points for his more infectious singing, temporarily ranking first.

There were bursts of exclamations from the audience, obviously recognizing this score.

Lu Jin was not interested in scores. He just felt that time passed too slowly.

Zhou Yan breathed a sigh of relief at this time, turned to look at Lu Jin, and said in a gentle tone: “The first two contestants are very capable, especially Lin Wan, whose emotional expression is very good.”

Lu Jin gave a perfunctory “hmm”, his eyes still stayed in the background, and he had no intention of continuing to communicate with him.

He could feel Zhou Yan’s eyes lingering on him for a few seconds, and then turned back to the stage again.

The invisible smoke in the air did not seem to dissipate due to the brief exchange between the two. Instead, it became more intense as Xie Shuhan’s appearance time approached.

The audience in the audience also became restless, and many people were whispering about the next contestant.

“Xie Shuhan is next, right? I came here specially to see him!”

“The first two were emo songs just now. I wonder what style Xie Shuhan will sing?”

When Lu Jin heard these discussions, his expectations became even stronger.

He straightened his back, put his hands on his knees, fixed his eyes firmly on the entrance to the stage, and even his breathing became a little short.

The host adjusted the microphone with a mysterious smile on his face: “The performance of the first two contestants was very exciting. I believe everyone, like me, is full of expectations for the next contestants.

Next, we invite the third contestant, Xie Shuhan from the Department of Law, who will sing the song “The Truth Is True” for us!Applause please!”

As soon as he finished speaking, the applause from the audience reached a climax instantly, even more enthusiastic than when the first two contestants appeared.

Lu Jin suddenly stood up from his seat and clapped his hands vigorously. His short silver-gray hair danced in the light, and his face was full of uncontrollable excitement and anticipation.

Zhou Yan also clapped, the smile on his face was still gentle, but his eyes could not hide the look of anticipation, and he also cast his gaze in the direction of the stage entrance.

The lights on the stage suddenly dimmed, and then a warm spotlight slowly turned on, focusing on the entrance to the stage.

Under the gaze of the entire audience, a slender figure slowly walked out.

Xie Shuhan was wearing a clean white shirt, with the cuffs neatly rolled up to his forearms, revealing his smooth wrists.

His hair was neatly styled, and the broken hair on his forehead glowed softly under the light.

His originally pale face had improved a lot and was stained with a faint blood color, but there was still a slight alienation between his brows.

He walked to the center of the stage, lowered his head slightly to adjust the height of the microphone, then raised his head and swept the audience calmly.

When his gaze passed over the first row, he happened to meet Lu Jin’s fiery gaze.

Lu Jin’s heartbeat skipped a beat for a moment. He subconsciously stopped clapping and looked at Xie Shuhan without blinking. The excitement on his face was beyond words.

Xie Shuhan’s eyes stayed on his face for a second, then he nodded slightly, as if to say hello, and then looked away and looked in the direction of the judges’ seat.

Just this brief glance made Lu Jin feel like fireworks exploded in his heart, and his joy was indescribable.

He clapped again, and the applause was louder than before, even with too much force, and his palms were slightly numb.

Yu Yifan looked at his appearance and shook his head helplessly, thinking to himself: Brother Jin, this is too obvious, for fear that others will not know that he is Xie Shuhan’s number one fan.

Zhou Yan’s eyes also stayed on Xie Shuhan, with a gentle smile on his lips and eyes full of encouragement and expectation.
