Chapter Index

You aren’t afraid I’ll die in bed?

That night, Qiu Zhijie didn’t say a single word. Kong Xunwen was silent at first too. Inside the bathroom, only the hollow sound of rushing water echoed, drowning out all other noises, as if only that pool of water existed.

Later, the water cooled, granting them a brief moment of rest. Kong Xunwen felt very comfortable, lying on the bed, drowsy, his hair being handled and blown dry by the man.

He thought they would go to sleep after it ended, but he was roused again in bed. He didn’t want to speak, only the sounds of breathing and panting could be heard, but the rain never stopped. In the end, even his words were cut short and fragmented by the continuous sound of the downpour.

Just before he almost drifted into unconsciousness, Kong Xunwen felt as if he had been drenched in a heavy rain outside, a rain that, through restraint, left few traces behind.

Only a faint flush remained on the young man’s body.

The youth’s eyes were half-closed, the moisture in them overflowing and tracing paths down his face, like wet, glistening sequins. He couldn’t see anything clearly; his entire body felt soft and weak.

It was as if that bone-deep pleasure still lingered.

When Kong Xunwen closed his eyes, a sense of lingering fear settled in his heart regarding that feeling of losing control. Compared to that, he now felt a strange emptiness.

He closed his eyes, feeling the movement finally cease. A gentle hand began to massage him. He didn’t know what kind of emotions were accumulating and bursting forth.

A low, hoarse voice sounded, making it hard to distinguish: “You aren’t afraid I’ll die in bed?”

The hand stiffened and paused for a moment before continuing the massage.

When he woke up again, Kong Xunwen’s vision was blurry, his body ached, feeling weak and powerless. His fingertips were numb, and he couldn’t muster any strength to lift them.

The curtains were completely drawn. Once his vision cleared, Kong Xunwen shifted his gaze, no longer looking at the curtains that reminded him of other things.

However, when he turned his head, he found a head resting on his neck. He hadn’t noticed it immediately, but now he did.

He really wanted to push him away.

Kong Xunwen thought faintly as he stared at the ceiling.

But he didn’t have any strength left.

No use, he might as well save his energy.

Yet, he couldn’t fall back asleep. Kong Xunwen thought of the last thing he had said yesterday. It had been satisfying, but thinking about it today, he felt it was too much, and he regretted it a little.

Why did he have to curse himself?

As he pondered, the head resting on his neck stirred, moving away slightly, seemingly having woken up.

    Kong Xunwen tilted his head.

    The head moved closer again.

Once more, it nestled against the skin of his neck.

Kong Xunwen decided to resist to the end, rubbing his head in the opposite direction, moving further away from that breath.

    He was quickly pursued.

He dodged again, and the other continued the chase.

The two of them quietly played this game for a while, until both had shifted as far as they could, ending up crookedly near the edge of the bed.

Kong Xunwen’s hand finally regained some strength. He couldn’t help but smile as he raised his hand to push Qiu Zhijie’s head away, his voice still soft: “Move over a bit.”

    “I won’t.”

Qiu Zhijie moved his head back.

    “Hurry up.”

    “No.”

    “Your hair is prickly.”

“Still no, even if it’s prickly.”

Pushing and returning, the two suddenly started to playfully squabble, laughter filling the room, as if they were back in the time before any conflict had occurred between them.

    Both temporarily forgot those things.

Until Kong Xunwen lost his strength and was pressed beneath Qiu Zhijie, lying on his side and breathing lightly. His face was flushed, a smile still on his lips. He was curled up in the small area enclosed by Qiu Zhijie, his bare, pale shoulder and neck exposed.

After a night, the faint marks left by the gentle movements mixed with a few careless moments emerged, looking like exquisite tattoos on his fair skin.

Only soft panting remained in the air, quickly followed by the curve of their lips in the quiet.

Kong Xunwen felt as if a long time had passed, yet perhaps not that long, because when Qiu Zhijie buried his face back into his neck, the man’s hands were still supporting him, not placing the slightest burden on him.

He couldn’t see the man’s expression, only hearing his very low voice near his ear, almost inaudible.

    “I’m afraid.”

A hot hand gripped the back of his neck. Kong Xunwen saw a small red mole on the man’s muscular chest and clearly heard the subsequent whisper, like raindrops pattering down, enveloping the room.

    “Don’t say things like that…”

Something truly hot seemed to drop into his neck hollow, scalding Kong Xunwen, making his body tremble, and then quickly turn cold, the warmth draining away.

It was a very wet feeling, reminding Kong Xunwen of the cold winter, as if the chill had seeped into his very bones.

He suddenly realized, thinking of the reflection on his words from last night that he had deliberately avoided.

It wasn’t just too much for him; it was the same for Qiu Zhijie.

What a heartbreaking thing to say. How could he have uttered it so easily?

The long-ignored pain in Kong Xunwen’s heart rose bit by bit, and regret invaded his entire body.

He raised his stiff hands, feeling the protruding spine on his back, thinking that spot felt cold too. He closed his eyes, and warm moisture slipped down, disappearing into his temples: “…I’m sorry.”

    *

Qiu Zhijie quickly rushed off to work. Kong Xunwen didn’t go with him this time. Yesterday’s session had truly been too much; his thighs were weak, and he felt completely drained.

He gritted his teeth, managing to hold back from cursing the man.

But sitting at the dining table, looking at the breakfast Qiu Zhijie had prepared despite his rush, Kong Xunwen recalled the string of events and suddenly felt lost.

He had apologized, and then what?

They continue to be together? But his illness…

    Will this matter just pass?

Kong Xunwen had no appetite, but he still forced mouthfuls into his mouth, staring blankly ahead.

After a long while, the plate in front of him was unknowingly empty. The fork scraped against the plate, making a harsh sound that irritated Kong Xunwen even more. He couldn’t help but raise his hand and mess up his hair.

Why do people always have to think about these things?

He looked forward with messy hair and vacant eyes.

Just take it one day at a time…

If only he could truly be that carefree.

Suddenly, his phone rang beside him. Kong Xunwen frowned and looked over. The screen light flashed on and off, displaying the note he had assigned: Teacher.

Staring at it for a moment, Kong Xunwen prepared himself mentally before reaching out to pick up the phone.

He lit up the screen, answered the call, and put it to his ear: “Hello, Teacher.”

“I’ve almost finished handling things here. How are things on your end?” Yun Yueluan’s robust voice came through.

Kong Xunwen lowered his eyes upon hearing it, gently pinching his fingertips. After a few seconds of silence, he suddenly realized and quickly spoke: “Well… still the same.”

Yun Yueluan, who was watering the vegetable garden, paused his movements upon hearing this: “Still the same? What does that mean?”

He frowned: “Did he bully you?”

Kong Xunwen quickly shook his head, then realized he was on the phone and hurriedly said: “No, no, it has nothing to do with that.”

    “Oh, then what happened?”

“…Nothing, what could have happened? I said it’s the same as before, just normal life.” Kong Xunwen realized he had been tricked into revealing something, but he stubbornly tried to cover it up.

However, Yun Yueluan had watched him grow up and could easily tell something was off, but he didn’t press the issue, seemingly believing him: “That’s good.”

“I’ve been watching your live streams these past few days. It looks like you’re doing very well now.”

With the topic shifted, Kong Xunwen breathed a sigh of relief and replied: “Yes, yes.”

Just as the two were chatting happily, the person on the other end suddenly asked unexpectedly: “Are you hiding something from me?”

His mind went blank for a moment. Kong Xunwen opened his mouth, only realizing he had been silent for a while when he heard the familiar voice calling his name.

    “…No,” he said weakly.

“Tell me, what are you hiding? Something about your relationship?” Yun Yueluan stated with certainty, completely disregarding Kong Xunwen’s weak denial.

Kong Xunwen pursed his lips and vaguely explained the issue between himself and Qiu Zhijie with a different excuse.

“…Because you don’t want a long-distance relationship?” Yun Yueluan repeated his problem.

“That’s a bit far-fetched. That’s not something that can’t be solved. If you were so determined to stay in your hometown, you wouldn’t be at his house right now.”

A moment of silence followed. Kong Xunwen realized he couldn’t think of any counter-argument. He was truly bad at lying.

“Hiding it from me like this, tell me, what exactly is going on?” Yun Yueluan lowered his voice, making it very gentle.

Kong Xunwen didn’t speak. He didn’t want to tell his teacher about this matter.

“Don’t lie anymore. Whatever it is, I hope I’m not the one being kept in the dark.”

    “I’m your teacher.”

The sharp sound of cicadas came through the phone receiver, entering Kong Xunwen’s ears. For a moment, it suppressed the sound of his accelerating heartbeat, leaving only the piercing silence around him.

He swallowed: “…The girl named Lele who was on the trending searches before.”

He couldn’t hide it from his teacher.

Yun Yueluan didn’t understand why she was mentioned, but he had heard about the incident and thus knew about the symptoms of that Genetic Disease.

There was actually a disease in the world that was so nerve-wracking, depending only on luck.

Hearing the name now, he had a bad feeling, but he still said: “I know her.”

“I have the same disease as her.”

Kong Xunwen whispered, as if that would make him less audible.

He had a premonition, but hearing it confirmed was still indescribable. Yun Yueluan suddenly remembered many years ago, on a very ordinary day, when he learned that his wife, Hu Shengyun, had entered a countdown to the end of her life.

He felt as if he had been transported back to that time, seeing the woman who, despite her reluctance and pain, still managed to smile to comfort him.

“…Oh,” he responded flatly. Nothing changed except for his throat suddenly feeling dry. “When did you find out?”

“During a physical examination arranged by the studio,” Kong Xunwen revealed the matter, yet he didn’t relax at all. He knew that sometimes, the people around you suffered more than the person themselves in such situations.

“So resigning was also because of this.”

    “…Yes.”

    “…”

A long silence followed. Kong Xunwen could only hear the breathing on the other end. Neither of them hung up the phone.

When he heard the voice again, Yun Yueluan had returned to his usual demeanor, though without the previous liveliness.

“Is there a possibility of treatment?”

“This thing, well, it’s all about luck,” Kong Xunwen made his tone cheerful, as if he didn’t care at all. “Teacher, you know my luck… has always been very good.”

He received no answer, but Yun Yueluan already knew the truth. As for the last sentence.

He chuckled lightly: “When have you ever relied on luck?”

He smoothly moved past the subject: “So this is why you’ve been struggling with things concerning your boyfriend.”

    “Mhm…”

    *

Qiu Zhijie picked up his phone, looked at the quiet message thread for a while, frowned, and couldn’t resist sending a message: Are you asleep again?

    No reply.

The man rubbed his forehead. It seemed installing surveillance at home was indeed necessary.
