I Should Install a Monitor at Home

He woke up in a daze, was carried to the bathroom to wash up, and then carried to the dining table.

Kong Xunwen propped his chin on his hand, looking at his phone. Unusually, he finished eating quickly today. In contrast, Qiu Zhijie across from him was eating slowly and methodically, still having more than half of his meal left.

There was nothing interesting on his phone, so he raised his head to look at the face bathed in the morning light across the table. The weather was exceptionally good today, signaling the approach of summer. The sunlight during breakfast was intense, casting a boundary between shadow and light that glowed with a dazzling orange hue.

It seemed that a bright light had fallen into those black pupils, making them less dark.

A vibration came from his hand. Kong Xunwen snapped back to reality, meeting Qiu Zhijie’s eyes, which had turned to look at him at some point. The tips of his ears flushed involuntarily as he lowered his head to check the message.

Qiu Zhijie didn’t withdraw his gaze, but his own phone vibrated—someone was calling him.

Kong Xunwen looked over as well, a hint of confusion still in his eyes. The vibration on his phone had been a message from his teacher.

Although he had looked up, the words he had just read were still playing in his mind: I will arrive this afternoon.

    This afternoon…

That was too quick, wasn’t it?

Kong Xunwen thought distractedly, watching the person across from him wait for him to finish his call before discussing the matter.

Qiu Zhijie put down his chopsticks, took out his phone, and raised an eyebrow. He instinctively looked up, meeting the young man’s questioning gaze.

Without responding to the young man’s look of inquiry, his finger answered the call: “Mom.”

The young man in his line of sight blinked, widening his eyes slightly. A smile unconsciously appeared on Qiu Zhijie’s lips.

Kong Xunwen watched as Qiu Zhijie answered the call, responded a few times, and then hung up.

Qiu Zhijie looked up at him: “They will arrive this afternoon.”

Kong Xunwen was silent for a moment, then opened his mouth, finally choosing to raise his hand and show his phone screen.

Qiu Zhijie glanced at the black screen, then reached out and took the young man’s phone to look at it.

Kong Xunwen quickly unlocked it and showed him the chat interface with his teacher.

He stared intently, watching the man’s reaction.

Qiu Zhijie’s face only showed a brief flicker of surprise before quickly returning to normal. He nodded, looking thoughtful: “The timing is just right then.”

The timing is just right? Right for what?

    Kong Xunwen blinked.

He saw the man across from him raise his phone, tapping away while saying, “Then it’s a good chance for everyone to meet.”

    Ah… huh? Huh?!!!

Kong Xunwen suddenly realized something was wrong. What? What? They were meeting the parents already? And not just a simple meeting, but both sets of parents meeting each other directly?!

The chair scraped against the floor, making a harsh sound.

Qiu Zhijie looked up at the noise and saw the young man across from him already standing up, his face full of surprise and nervousness. His widened eyes and slightly ruffled black hair combined to look…

    Hmm, cute.

Qiu Zhijie felt a slight regret. He should install a monitor at home.

    He asked knowingly, “What’s wrong?”

Qiu Zhijie’s reaction made Kong Xunwen start to doubt if he was overreacting, but, but was this really a normal thing?

He frowned and parted his lips, but didn’t know what to say, hating his own lack of eloquence for the first time.

Yesterday, he had spent a long time thinking about his Genetic Disease and wanted to discuss it with Qiu Zhijie, but now they were suddenly meeting both sets of parents?!

Kong Xunwen hadn’t even sorted out what he should do. A tangled mess had suddenly been mixed with another ball of yarn, and this person right in front of him had thrown it in himself.

    This was truly…

He ground his teeth, feeling a little angry.

Qiu Zhijie saw that the young man was genuinely upset, so he quickly moved his chair, stood up, and came to his side, wrapping an arm around him and holding his hand, adopting a serious attitude.

Kong Xunwen didn’t want to look at him, but being held and half-hugged, his anger immediately began to dissipate. He glanced up at him and then looked away, feeling much less annoyed with him now.

Thinking about it, what had Qiu Zhijie done wrong? On the contrary, if the two of them were to separate, he would be the one who should apologize.

Although he thought this, he didn’t lean into the embrace as readily as he usually did.

Qiu Zhijie sensed the young man’s mood sinking, assuming it was because of what he had just said. He was genuinely panicked, a hint of bitterness rising in his heart. He quickly lowered his head to meet those light-colored eyes: “Alright, alright, I didn’t send the message yet. They just said they were coming over. If you don’t want both sides to meet, then forget it.”

He thought: It was too fast after all; he was too impatient.

Thinking this, he anxiously fumbled in his pocket to find his phone, opened the chat interface with his mother, and showed it to him.

Kong Xunwen lightly bit his lower lip, but still shifted his gaze over.

As he had said, Qiu Zhijie had only replied with three words: Got it.

Other things must have been discussed during the phone call just now.

Although he got the answer he wanted, Kong Xunwen felt no joy, but rather a sense of loss.

    He knew clearly.

He didn’t genuinely not want to meet the parents; it was just…

How long would this relationship last?

Seeing the time displayed at the top of the screen, Kong Xunwen lowered his eyes, composed himself, then raised his head and forced a smile. He actively leaned forward and placed himself in the man’s embrace, raising his hands to hug him back.

He whispered softly, “Mhm, I know.”

He paused, swallowing the slight dryness in his throat, and continued, “I just feel like it’s a bit fast.”

Qiu Zhijie, receiving the embrace, immediately shed the hidden disappointment on his face, though he still felt a little defiant inside.

What was fast about it? He wished he had met the parents and settled the matter the moment they got together.

The two embraced, unable to see each other’s expressions.

So, while Qiu Zhijie was enjoying the moment, he heard the young man’s light, gentle voice sound mercilessly: “Alright, your work time is almost up.”

Kong Xunwen felt the person holding him stiffen. A little more amusement entered his eyes, but then the man suddenly hugged him tightly and vigorously rubbed his head.

    He shrank his neck slightly.

Qiu Zhijie finally let go, watching the young man retreat a little, his hair still messy from the rubbing, as he looked up seriously again.

    “Go to work quickly.”

    “…Got it.”

Qiu Zhijie reluctantly kissed the young man’s forehead.

Kong Xunwen closed his eyes. The warm, soft touch on his forehead lingered, only disappearing when he was about to give in and open his eyes.

His cheek was stroked: “Then I’m leaving. Remember to keep the video call on.”

The man looked like he wanted to say more.

Kong Xunwen pretended not to notice. There was no way he would go to the studio with Qiu Zhijie and face his former colleagues!

    It was too awkward.

As the door closed, Kong Xunwen hadn’t even had time to sigh in relief when the video call came through.

He lowered his eyes, feeling a little helpless.

But he answered the call anyway, looking at the face on the screen, and heard the voice on the other side say, “I miss you so much…”

A car was driving on the road, heading towards the residential area where Qiu Zhijie lived.

A woman with exquisite makeup and hair, dressed in elegant and simple clothing, meticulously applied red lipstick while looking in the mirror. After pressing her lips together, she put down the lipstick and handed it to the side.

The man, dressed in casual clothes, looked somewhat different from the woman but shared a strange sense of harmony with her. He took the lipstick with a hint of helplessness, adjusted his glasses, and asked, “Why the sudden trip to his place?”

The woman, who was Qiu Hanzhuo, Qiu Zhijie’s mother, continued to check her appearance in the mirror. Hearing his question, she glanced over casually: “Doesn’t he have a house there? Just going to take a look while we’re at it.”

Shi An naturally didn’t believe her, but he didn’t expose her, understanding clearly in his heart.

Her son had mentioned the person he liked before, but there had been no follow-up. She was coming over to see what the situation was.

He put the lipstick away. His phone screen lit up with a message. He picked it up, checked the messages, then opened Qiu Hanzhuo’s schedule for the day, and began to report.

Qiu Hanzhuo listened while looking in the mirror. Finally, she nodded, but then said, “Didn’t I say I was going to rest today?”

Shi An just smiled: “Can you ever sit still?”

Being called out, Qiu Hanzhuo raised an eyebrow and put down the mirror. She was different from when she was younger; she wasn’t easily teased anymore.

But what he said was true.

“Fine, after dealing with all this messy stuff, we’ll go check on him. We can tell him later.”

Shi An responded with a smile: “Yes, CEO Qiu.”

Like yesterday, Kong Xunwen extended his live stream time today, so he began preparing for the broadcast shortly after Qiu Zhijie left in the morning.

There were more people today, which briefly allowed him to escape the cage of negative thoughts, focusing only on how to conduct the live stream.

He painted while chatting with his fans.

After the sudden surge of popularity yesterday, many newcomers flooded in. The situation stabilized today, and people finally started noticing the change in Kong Xunwen’s streaming environment.

Of course, this was also because yesterday’s stream had a different angle, mostly focusing on him and his painting.

Today, the equipment was placed further away, allowing the unfamiliar surroundings to be seen.

“Huh? Did Wenwen move to a new place?”

    “Is this a new home?”

“I feel like I’m more used to the old one, though, it was great for my eyes, hahaha.”

Kong Xunwen paused briefly, so short that it went unnoticed. He quickly smiled and said, “Yes, but I will go back to streaming from the old place later.”

“That’s a relief. The bamboo in the old place was so beautiful, especially in the video Little Miss edited.”

“But why did you suddenly come here?”

“Could it be the boyfriend’s house?”

“Hehe, are you already living together?”

“You can tell you haven’t been paying attention to the shipping. They’ve been living together for ages.”

“Yeah, yeah, he even used to call Wenwen to wake up back then.”

Kong Xunwen wasn’t looking at the comments at this moment, but was carefully outlining the lines of the painting on the screen.

The young man lowered his eyes, completely focused.

The fans watching the stream didn’t notice anything amiss. After all, Wenwen often stopped looking at the comments to focus on painting, and they were used to it.

Besides, they wanted Wenwen to paint seriously.

Since there were many people in the live stream, they could chat among themselves about the scene for a long time.

Completely unaffected, long-time fans enthusiastically shared previous shipping moments with the newcomers.

When Qiu Zhijie checked the open live stream during a work break, this was the scene he saw. He glanced at the young man’s focused expression, then looked at the little details that he himself hadn’t even noticed, a smile appearing in his eyes.

“…Why does it sound like knocking?”

“I heard it too. I thought it was a sound from my side.”

“So someone came to Wen’s place?”

Qiu Zhijie watched, frowning. He picked up his phone, ready to call Kong Xunwen. They were actually on a video call right now, but the video was muted during the live stream.

As soon as his phone unlocked, it jumped to the message interface, where a single unread message at the very top was highly conspicuous.

The man froze and tapped into it.

    Mother: Are you home now?

    Mother: I’m knocking now.
