Chapter 4: Treating Oneself as a Treasure

Xing Zhan did indeed notice something was wrong the moment he laid eyes on the person.

He had only seen photos of An Shi, but his memory was excellent, and he remembered what An Shi looked like.

Where did this imposter come from, and how did they have the audacity?

Xing Zhan secretly regretted not visiting the An Family earlier, no matter how busy he was.

Recently, he had to look after Old Master Xing, who was gravely ill; suppress his father, that dog, who was taking advantage of the situation to rebel; organize the wedding; and handle official business…

He was stretched thin and had to send people to deliver gifts to the An Family multiple times.

As a result of his busy schedule, chaos ensued, and someone seized an opportunity.

Xing Zhan subconsciously looked at Old Master Xing not far away.

The Old Master, seated in a wheelchair, had a gaunt, sickly face, but his eyes, fixed on the imposter, were bright and spirited.

Xing Zhan’s eyes stung, but his heart settled.

The groom had been replaced. Either someone on his side wanted to occupy his partner’s position to influence his decisions, or the An Family was engaged in internal power struggles and wanted to climb the ranks using him.

Regardless of the other party’s intentions, the wedding had to proceed normally.

Old Master Xing had been barely able to sit up, but after hearing that Xing Zhan wanted to get married, his spirit improved day by day.

    If something went wrong today…

Xing Zhan didn’t dare to think further.

At this moment, he was thankful that, to maintain Old Master Xing’s curiosity and will to live, he had insisted on not showing anyone An Shi’s information, claiming he wanted to give the Old Master a surprise.

Xing Zhan stood quietly, waiting for the imposter to reach him.

Upon inspection, the person’s appearance was excellent, and their temperament was good. They shouldn’t disappoint the Old Master.

It was just that they seemed a bit young. Were they even twenty?

The host was about to speak but saw Xing Zhan raise a hand and instinctively stepped aside.

Although An Yu didn’t retreat, he felt quite nervous.

This was his first time impersonating someone.

Standing so close, the man, who was half a head taller and a size larger than him, looked down expressionlessly, like a large beast surveying its prey.

Especially since, although this person was handsome, his handsomeness was decidedly unfriendly.

An Yu subconsciously wanted to rub his nose, but remembering that this was a typical sign of guilt, he held back.

The next second, his vision darkened as Xing Zhan leaned in close.

A faint, crisp scent wafted past An Yu’s nose—it smelled very pleasant.

Xing Zhan whispered into An Yu’s ear, “Stay close to me. If the wedding goes wrong in the slightest, you won’t want to know the consequences.”

His voice was also unfriendly—deep and cold, carrying the calm composure of someone ready to draw blood.

An Yu’s fine hairs stood up uncontrollably, and he quietly hummed in acknowledgment.

The guests couldn’t hear what the two were saying, but seeing the couple whispering, especially since the usually aloof Xing Zhan initiated it, they were surprised.

Those who knew An Shi wondered if the person had been switched.

However, they didn’t suspect An Yu’s origins were improper.

They all saw that Xing Zhan was very proactive.

The wedding invitation was addressed to An Shi, but perhaps this An Shi wasn’t the one they thought it was.

It had to be said, this person was truly excellent. Standing there gracefully, they weren’t overshadowed by Xing Zhan at all; instead, they complemented each other perfectly.

The An Family relatives were collectively stunned. Could An Yu be this outstanding?

Someone whispered in shock, “How is it An Yu?”

    Father An remained silent.

His mind was in turmoil. The An Yu who wasn’t timid and reserved resembled that person greatly.

    Mother An also didn’t speak.

    She was dying of regret.

The marriage was said to be rushed, yet the wedding banquet was so grand and luxurious.

And Xing Zhan—no young man present could compare to him.

If she could go back to this morning, she would have dragged An Shi here, even if she had to tie him up. All of this belonged to An Shi!

Seeing that Father An and Mother An looked displeased but remained silent, the An Family relatives also quieted down.

In any case, the meat was staying in the pot; whether it was An Shi or An Yu marrying in, they were still An Family members.

Perhaps An Yu was even better.

Outsiders didn’t understand, but they were clear. An Shi was shrewd and arrogant, while An Yu was soft-hearted, honest, and easy to talk to.

After warning An Yu, Xing Zhan signaled the host, and the wedding began.

He took An Yu’s hand and led him onto the stage.

As the two exchanged rings, Xing Zhan asked in a low voice, “What is your name?”

He spoke as if he were looking at some inanimate object.

The guests smiled, seeing the two whispering again.

An Yu could understand Xing Zhan’s coldness.

If it were him, he would be anxious too.

If it weren’t for the foundation of the original novel, An Yu wouldn’t have come.

    He answered softly, “An Yu.”

When speaking his name, An Yu felt a little proud.

In his previous life, he grew up in an orphanage and was named Ping An (Peace).

The name was given by the orphanage staff.

He had no origin and no surname.

In fourth grade, because his name was plain and his background unknown, he was called a bastard.

An Yu fought three people and won a painful victory.

He went back and flipped through the dictionary.

Afterward, he carefully changed his name to An Yu.

Most children in the orphanage had intellectual disabilities or physical impairments.

An Yu, who could run, jump, and attend school, often felt fortunate.

The surname An was a wish for himself to be safe and sound, free from illness and pain.

Yu (é’°) meant treasure, and also hard metal.

He had no relatives and secretly thought that he had to treat himself as a treasure, a strong treasure.

Xing Zhan slipped the ring onto An Yu’s finger.

The ring was slightly large—it didn’t belong to the person in front of him.

When An Yu placed the ring on Xing Zhan’s finger, the size was just right.

According to the procedure, the kiss followed.

Xing Zhan looked at the imposter’s lips—rosy, soft, and very beautiful.

It had only been a little over a week since he decided to get married.

Xing Zhan didn’t have time to dream of anything, but he knew what he should give his partner: respect, loyalty, and care were the most basic.

However, the person in front of him had unknown origins.

Therefore, even though he looked quite appetizing, he wasn’t worthy of receiving anything.

Xing Zhan replaced the kiss with an embrace.

The body was soft and slender, fragile enough that one dared not use force. So weak, yet daring enough to pull off a substitution…

An Yu hugged Xing Zhan back.

His nose touched Xing Zhan’s clothes—good material, comfortable to rub against.

Next was the acknowledgment of the elders.

An Yu and Xing Zhan bowed to Old Master Xing, Father An, Mother An, and Xing Zhan’s parents in turn.

Old Master Xing kindly handed An Yu a brocade pouch.

He was emaciated, and even though his bone structure was excellent, he looked somewhat frightening at first glance.

An Yu was abruptly reminded of the orphanage director, Mother, who had cervical cancer in his previous life.

At that time, the director was also very thin, and the look in her eyes was very similar to the old man in front of him.

Back then, he had money and connections, but he still couldn’t save her.

An Yu felt a pang of sadness and smiled, saying, “Thank you, Grandpa.”

His voice was clear and melodious, yet his tone was soft and intimate, as obedient as his appearance suggested.

Xing Zhan glanced at An Yu, thinking that he was quite the actor.

Old Master Xing nodded with a chuckle. His good grandson had excellent taste. The grandson-in-law had clear eyes and a pure spirit; he was a good child.

Madam Xing was also very satisfied with An Yu.

Although she didn’t know why it wasn’t An Shi, whoever Xing Zhan acknowledged, she would acknowledge.

She recalled that she had been the one who chose An Shi for Xing Zhan initially.

Two months ago, the Old Master accidentally fell and gradually became seriously ill.

Half a month ago, the doctor said the Old Master might not make it this time.

Xing Zhan was unwilling to accept this and stayed by the hospital bed every night.

He had been raised by the Old Master since childhood, and their grandfather-grandson relationship was extremely deep.

The elders in the clan said that the Old Master was seventy-three this year, and the saying went that at seventy-three and eighty-four, the King of Hell takes you without an invitation.

    Xing Zhan didn’t believe this.

Someone in the family suggested trying a celebratory marriage to ward off bad luck.

Xing Zhan agreed and told the Old Master that he had found someone he loved and wanted to get married.

The Old Master had always hoped for him to settle down, and his spirit immediately soared.

Xing Zhan had always been busy with work, and his love life was blank.

Madam Xing watched him quickly release the news that he wanted to marry and cried several times in distress. Marriage was a lifelong commitment; how could it be so rushed?

Like her, one moment of impulse ruined her entire life.

She tried to persuade him, but Xing Zhan wouldn’t budge.

The Xing Family was vast and powerful. Xing Zhan was young, handsome, and held all the power, so countless people offered themselves up.

Xing Zhan was busy, so he gave the interested parties’ information to Madam Xing for review.

Madam Xing asked him what kind of person he wanted. He said someone with good character, filial piety, and not too large an age gap would suffice.

Seeing him so casual, Madam Xing couldn’t help but shed tears again.

Xing Zhan bent down to wipe her tears. “I decided long ago not to marry. Grandpa’s illness, however, seems like fate…”

Not marry? How could that be!

Madam Xing knew Xing Zhan was resolute, and her tears immediately stopped. “You must marry! Maybe the Old Master will be so happy that his illness will be cured.”

Xing Zhan nodded. “You are right.”

Madam Xing reignited her fighting spirit and quickly flipped through the files.

When she saw An Shi’s photo, her eyes lit up. “I’ve seen this boy before.”

Not long ago, Madam Xing passed by a mall and saw An Shi arguing with someone over a stray cat.

In the end, An Shi paid money to buy the cat.

Madam Xing recalled, “It was a little tabby cat, its ear was notched, and it was dirty and thin, but he didn’t mind…”

She thought that Xing Zhan had a cold personality, and An Shi was loving and caring. He would surely be attentive in the future. The fact that he appeared in the files so coincidentally seemed like fate.

    The matter was thus settled.

However, perhaps out of motherly love, Madam Xing always felt that An Shi’s appearance was somewhat underwhelming compared to Xing Zhan.

At this moment, she couldn’t help but secretly compare again.

An Shi’s appearance didn’t match Xing Zhan, but this one was just right. His large eyes were bright and sparkling, fluttering, melting one’s heart.

Most importantly, Xing Zhan was so proactive…

Madam Xing smiled sweetly, while Father An and Mother An, also on stage, were filled with bitterness, struggling hard to maintain their composure.

The couple had clearly seen that Old Master Xing gave An Yu a piece of mutton-fat jade talisman.

An antique, priceless—this should have belonged to An Shi!

Beside Madam Xing, Father Xing was neither satisfied nor willing to maintain appearances.

Three days before the wedding, he had been confined by Xing Zhan.

A son confining his father—it was outrageous!

He had merely taken back what belonged to him while the Old Master was gravely ill. What was wrong with that?

He originally thought he would enjoy some drama at the wedding. Xing Zhan marrying in a hurry—what good person could he find? He didn’t expect the rebellious son to be lucky enough to find a celestial beauty.

Why did this scoundrel get all the good things?

Father Xing grew angrier the more he thought about it.

Looking at the old coot who never took him seriously, laughing heartily, malice rose in his heart.

The host had just asked the elders to leave the stage and give the time to the newlyweds, when Father Xing immediately interjected, “It’s a day of great joy, no need to rush.”

The banquet hall instantly fell silent.

Seeing Father Xing looking smug, those who knew a little of the inside story whispered to their friends, “I heard he tried to rally people to rebel but failed. Now he’s probably here with ill intentions. He’s only relying on the fact that he’s the biological father…”

The friend replied, “I really fear the Old Master will be angered into a relapse.”

On the stage, Father Xing looked at An Yu. Meeting An Yu’s clear, black-and-white eyes, his heart fluttered.

Such stunning beauty—why hadn’t he noticed it before?

He felt regretful and smiled kindly, saying, “You truly are a good child.”

An Yu, who knew a bit of the Xing Family’s internal drama: …This old geezer wants to cause trouble using him.

Father Xing asked An Yu, “You and Xing Zhan look truly compatible. How did you two meet?”

Who didn’t know that Xing Zhan was cold-hearted and unlikable?

Today’s marriage was entirely for the purpose of warding off bad luck.

It seemed the Old Master probably didn’t know about the celebratory marriage aspect.

It looked joyous and festive, but in reality, there was nothing to it.

    If exposed…

In short, both the old and the young would be embarrassed, and he would be the happiest.
