Go To Your Death Chapter 4
byBed Partner
Lin Jinyao slept fitfully for two days and a night before finally waking up.
During that time, his phone had been bombarded with calls from Zhou Xuan.
Mu Huacheng, meanwhile, watched Lin Jinyao sleep while observing the silenced phone flash over and over again. He counted the calls silently in his head, then checked the phone to see if his count matched the actual number of missed calls. Finally, he cleared the entire call history.
When Lin Jinyao woke, the bedroom was empty. He struggled to get up, but his head spun and his legs felt weak. Unable to support his own weight, he collapsed back down.
The clock on the nightstand showed that two days had passed since the anniversary of Zhou Xubai’s death. It happened to coincide with the maritime banquet Mu Huacheng had mentioned.
Mu Huacheng’s private secretary, Chen Jin, came to collect him.
Good afternoon, Mr. Lin. This is a Stefan Ricci suit Mr. Mu specially prepared for you, customized to your preferences.
Chen Jin had been with Mu Huacheng much longer than Lin Jinyao. Logically, as someone who had schemed his way into Mu Huacheng’s bed, Lin Jinyao should have shown him some modicum of respect. After all, a saying circulated within Xijing’s Princeling circles: Chen Jin is iron-clad, but bed partners are a revolving door!
Yet, facing Chen Jin, Lin Jinyao truly couldn’t bring himself to smile.
A year ago, he had put a great deal of effort into investigating Chen Jin as a way to look into Mu Huacheng. His initial goal, after all, had been to get close to Chen Jin! It was only later, through a series of accidents, that he ended up involved with Mu Huacheng instead.
Chen Jin was well-accustomed to Lin Jinyao’s reticence; it would have been truly terrifying if the man had actually been pleasant to him.
Lin Jinyao’s legs were sore and his movements were slow. He had to lean on the sofa, moving forward one small step at a time, feeling as though he had no control over his limbs.
Mr. Lin, do you need assistance?
Chen Jin’s offer was well-intentioned, but to Lin Jinyao, that smiling face was an eyesore. He silently turned his head away, not bothering to look at him. He merely whispered a reminder of his current lack of energy. I am hungry.
Chen Jin smiled and turned to order the meal that had already been prepared. He had the chefs place the dishes before Lin Jinyao one by one—mostly liquid foods prepared by top international chefs, designed to nourish the stomach and replenish his energy. Mr. Mu said that you should make do with this for the next two days, Mr. Lin, to help your body recover.
I’ll be sure to thank him, Lin Jinyao thought.
Seeing Lin Jinyao’s face cloud over, Chen Jin wanted to laugh but didn’t dare. He found an excuse to step out and wait for him.
As the first lights of evening flickered on, the city became a sea of brilliance.
The Dongshan cruise ship, docked at West Coast Port, was decorated with golden splendor under the night sky. The Xihai Bay project, which had launched four years ago, had been driven by Mu Huacheng. The Mayor of Xijing was deeply grateful for Mu Huacheng’s generosity, so after the project’s implementation was finalized, his first thought was to invite the man responsible and host a grand banquet in his honor.
Mu Huacheng hadn’t originally planned to make an appearance, but Lin Jinyao’s recent attitude had left him extremely dissatisfied.
No one else treated Mu Huacheng like a venomous snake or a scorpion the way Lin Jinyao did. Lin Jinyao wanted nothing more than for the world to remain ignorant of their relationship.
It was one thing for Mu Huacheng to keep a low profile, but Lin Jinyao was even more discreet than he was!
Sometimes, Mu Huacheng even wondered if Lin Jinyao refused to acknowledge the reality of them being together. Thus, the reason this banquet was so grand was that Mu Huacheng intended to give Lin Jinyao the official status of his boyfriend.
Even if Lin Jinyao didn’t want it.
I heard Mr. Mu is finally willing to let his precious darling show his face? A man walked into the banquet hall on the top deck of the Dongshan. It was Fan Yu, the controlling shareholder of Ruilai Group.
He had specifically cut his business trip short and traveled a long way just to get a look at the person.
He had heard long ago that Mu Huacheng had been tamed by some obscure nobody. And that he was a willing participant!
It was damn bizarre—so bizarre it could be written into The Biography of Mu Huacheng.
Some of the Princelings who knew the inside story began to snicker behind their hands.
Fan Yu glanced at the person sitting next to Mu Huacheng, who tactfully vacated the seat. Without standing on ceremony, he sat down, unbuttoned his suit jacket with one hand, and grinned at the impassive Mu Huacheng. Back then, when you asked me to find someone to get close to that nouveau riche, I was still wondering about it. In the end, before I could even make contact, the guy kicked the bucket! Scared the life out of me. My dad thought I was up to no good and gave me a hell of a beating. I couldn’t get out of bed for three days. Look, it’s been a year and the scars on my arm still haven’t fully healed. How are you going to pay me back?
Mu Huacheng didn’t even look at him. Your father beat you, and you want me to pay you back? Am I your father?
A wave of laughter erupted around them.
After the laughter subsided, someone started gossiping. The woman Young Master Fan mentioned… they say she committed suicide later. It was in the news back then.
It was quite a scandal!
Yeah, she was a pitiful girl. Her parents were both remarried, and I think she had an older brother.
He wasn’t even her biological brother. So tragic.
Not biological, but closer than a real one.
I know about this. Her brother seems to still be investigating her death. Last time, he even traced it back to Little Fishy, haha. Little Fishy, look at the mess you’ve gotten yourself into.
Fan Yu clicked his tongue and glared at the speaker. Zhang Shuo, try saying that name again and see if I don’t rip your mouth apart!
Mu Huacheng remained silent, merely looking down at the watch on his wrist. He gave a look to the assistant behind him, who understood immediately and stepped aside to contact Chen Jin.
The gossip continued to revolve around the woman who had committed suicide.
Mu Huacheng, displeased, accidentally shattered a glass.
Clink! The sound was exceptionally crisp.
The world finally fell silent.
From now on, no one is allowed to mention this matter again. Zhang Shuo was the best at reading the room; he immediately turned serious and made a zipping motion over his lips to the crowd as a warning.
Although Mu Huacheng said nothing, the cold aura radiating from him made it clear that these people had touched a nerve.
If they continued, no one could guarantee that the banquet wouldn’t end in blood.
Only you would play the good guy.
Fan Yu rolled his eyes at Zhang Shuo and took a sip of wine, his gaze sweeping over Mu Huacheng repeatedly.
This was getting interesting!
So, they weren’t allowed to talk about it?
He found it hard not to suspect that Mu Huacheng had a hand in what happened. After all, he knew some inside information that others didn’t.
A moment later, the assistant approached and whispered something into Mu Huacheng’s ear. Only then did Mu Huacheng’s frozen expression regain a spark of life.
When Chen Jin led Lin Jinyao through the door, Lin Jinyao was also sizing up the people around him. They were all familiar faces rarely seen in person—even a nationally famous movie star was there as a guest, not to mention heavyweight figures like the Mayor of Xijing.
Lin Jinyao knew that Mu Huacheng was the shadow emperor of Xijing’s underworld, but seeing it with his own eyes was far more impactful.
Mu Huacheng held interests in eighty percent of the country’s ports and had a hand in logistics, shipping, real estate, finance, new energy, and more. It was a diversified and comprehensive business empire built over a century-old lineage. At the same time, the Mu surname was the sole representative symbol for energy development on the high seas. On a national level, the weapons, guns, and artillery used by the maritime military were also supplied by Mu Huacheng.
He was practically as wealthy as a nation.
What could such a man not achieve? Killing someone was as easy as crushing an ant.
Lin Jinyao followed Chen Jin at a steady pace. Everywhere he passed, the surroundings fell into a hush. By the time he crossed the dance floor and arrived before the crowd, even Fan Yu, who had seen countless people, sucked in a breath of cold air.
This person was truly too beautiful.
Especially those eyes!
Lin Jinyao’s gaze was like a torch, fixed on the back of a waiter in the distance. In an instant, his scalp went numb. The man seemed to know Lin Jinyao was watching him, as he turned and quickly left the area.
When did Zhou Xuan sneak onto the ship? Lin Jinyao didn’t even have time to think before he discreetly withdrew his gaze.
Mu Huacheng sat in his seat, watching Lin Jinyao walk toward him step by step. His mood reached its peak!
Even his previous displeasure was swept away.
Having safely delivered the guest, Chen Jin’s mission was complete. He quietly stepped aside to greet Fan Yu, Zhang Shuo, and the others.
Are you feeling better? Mu Huacheng took his hand, pulling him down to sit beside him, and asked with concern.
Fan Yu wanted to laugh; if the setting hadn’t been so inappropriate, he definitely would have burst out.
When had Mu Huacheng ever been this gentle with anyone?
Thanks to you, Mr. Mu.
Thanks to you, I can still walk, Lin Jinyao thought.
Mu Huacheng heard the resentment in his tone but only smiled. He pinched Lin Jinyao’s Jacob & Co. diamond cufflink, slowly turning it. So beautiful. It suits you well.
Mr. Mu’s taste is naturally exquisite.
