Chapter Index

In just a moment, the wind and snow intensified at the cliff edge. Snowflakes fell through the magic barrier onto the two of them, the cold air pervasive, the atmosphere heavy. For a time, neither spoke.

Loren walked over and blocked his path, his face pale and bruised, whether from the cold or anger was unclear: “I don’t object to you looking for someone, but only on the premise that you consider your own safety.”

Su Sheng frowned slightly upon hearing this: “I said I would.”

Loren stated with certainty: “You won’t.”

The two remained locked in a stalemate.

After a while, Loren’s eyes deepened, but he suddenly let out a breath and forced a smile: “At least let me go with you.”

Su Sheng remained silent, but he no longer insisted on walking toward the cliff edge. Instead, he returned to the footprints. With a slight flick of his finger, a magic butterfly sprang forth. The butterfly lingered for a moment at the footprints before flying toward the bottom of the cliff.

Su Sheng knitted his brows. He had to find a way down the cliff, but he was unfamiliar with the paths here, and returning to the foot of the mountain would waste too much time. He was momentarily stumped.

Loren was about to suggest that he lead the way when, at that moment, a figure appeared in the vast snow.

Loren’s expression subtly darkened. He wanted to do something, but he restrained himself, though the gaze he directed at the newcomer was laced with coldness.

Su Sheng saw the figure in the distance and quickly ran toward them. Only when he got closer did he realize it was a young man.

The young man was startled to see them and asked hesitantly, “Are you…?”

It was very cold here, and every breath was frigid air. Su Sheng said concisely, “Looking for someone.”

The young man looked at him, then at Loren, and suddenly realized: “Oh! You must be the outsiders the uncle mentioned.”

Immediately after, Su Sheng asked, “Can you take us to the bottom of the cliff? Vial is likely down there.”

Upon hearing this, the young man instantly became energized. He didn’t have time to wonder why this person was calling the Holy Knight Captain by his first name, but excitedly said, “Follow me.”

Su Sheng and the young man walked very close together. Behind them, Loren’s expression grew increasingly displeased, but Su Sheng didn’t notice.

    .

They searched under the cliff for a day and a night, finally finding a comatose Vial in a cave at dawn on the second day.

Discovering that the Holy Knight Captain was still alive, the young man looked excited and immediately rushed over. Su Sheng set up a wind-blocking spell and walked over to tell the young man, “Let me check him.”

    The young man stepped aside.

After examining Vial, Su Sheng turned to look for Loren, only to find him standing at the cave entrance, enduring the cold wind.

“What are you doing?” he walked over and asked, confused.

“As you can see,” Loren grunted cryptically.

Su Sheng paused his movement and asked with confusion, “What’s wrong?”

Loren casually scooped up a handful of white snow from beside the cave and played with it in his palm, his eyes sweeping over Su Sheng indifferently, but he didn’t speak.

Su Sheng rarely saw Loren like this. After a moment, he asked uncertainly, “Are you angry?”

Loren continued to play with the snow in his hand, molding it into various shapes, then tossing them away carelessly. Su Sheng used magic to gather all the snow, restore it into ice sculptures, and then joined Loren in throwing them.

After throwing for a while, Loren stopped moving. Su Sheng tilted his head to look. Loren’s azure eyes were not as stunning as when they first met, but they looked particularly reassuring, even somewhat endearing.

After a moment, Su Sheng restored the thrown snow sculptures. The restored sculptures gathered around Loren, some even waving their tiny hands in greeting.

    Loren was amused.

Seeing this, Su Sheng quietly breathed a sigh of relief. He didn’t even notice the faint smile that touched the corner of his mouth.

Loren turned and walked inside, approaching Vial and casting a healing spell on him.

    Soon, Vial woke up.

Seeing the three people present, Vial was first stunned. His gaze swept around before settling on Su Sheng.

Su Sheng looked steadily at him, his gaze showing no intention of avoidance.

Vial, clad in black armor, moved his lips and stated, “You used a disguise spell.”

As he spoke, Vial waved his hand, dispelling Su Sheng’s magic.

Su Sheng’s black hair and black eyes were thus unexpectedly revealed to everyone.

    Vial was surprised: “Saint Son.”

The young man beside him gaped, his eyes fixed on Su Sheng, clearly also shocked: “W-w-what? Saint Son?”

But then he looked at Su Sheng with hostility, his body adopting a defensive posture.

Vial remained relatively calm, but his tightly clenched hands betrayed that he was not as composed as he appeared.

“You harmed the people of an entire City-State.”

Su Sheng’s gaze chilled slightly. He looked at Vial and said softly, “Must we discuss this issue here?”

At this moment, Loren collected the surrounding ice sculptures, stepped in front of Su Sheng, blocking the gazes of the two men, and looked at them unkindly.

His meaning was clear: this person is under my protection.

Vial looked at Loren, who was guarding Su Sheng, and then back at Su Sheng. He looked astonished, as if the scene before him was the most incredible thing imaginable.

    He asked hesitantly, “You two?”

It wasn’t surprising that he was so shocked, because Norton Similias was truly someone who loved to show off his strength. It had been this way since childhood in school; he always had to get first place in every magic potion experiment. Once, when they were caught skipping class, everyone pushed the blame onto him, and he was forced to take the fall for everything. He was beaten until his backside bled but never begged for mercy. Of course, he took fierce revenge afterward.

And yet, this person, who was strong-willed to the extreme, was now tacitly allowing someone to stand in front of him, even if that person was acting out of goodwill. This was something that would never have happened before.

“What is the nature of your relationship?” Vial was actually a very curious person. This was why he had once risked Su Sheng’s retaliation just to understand why the man, despite being in agonizing pain, still refused to beg for mercy. Unable to contain his curiosity, he asked.

Su Sheng stepped out from behind Loren and replied calmly, “Companions.”

Vial looked at the other person, who hadn’t spoken but wore a slight smile. Just companions? Very well, now he was even more curious about their relationship.

But the other party clearly had no intention of letting him delve further. Suppressing his untimely curiosity, he said, “What do you need me for?”

“I need you to do me a favor,” Su Sheng said.

Vial shrugged and said, “You know we’ve never gotten along since we were kids, but since you saved me, I can consider it.”

    Su Sheng: “Consider what?”

“As long as you tell me what you need to do and why, I’ll help you. How about it?” Vial said with a smile.

Loren raised an eyebrow, about to speak, but Su Sheng took over the conversation, showing no weakness: “You need to understand, this is the bottom of a cliff. Given your injuries, it will probably be very difficult for you to return to the mountain base right now, won’t it? Furthermore, you still carry some demonic aura. Who knows when demons might track you down again? Even so, are you still unwilling to help me?”

    Vial: “…”

Vial gritted his teeth: “You’ve got me. Fine, tell me, what favor requires me specifically?”

Su Sheng said, “It’s a very simple matter. Everyone else goes outside. Only Vial and I remain in the cave. As for you, close your eyes.”

Su Sheng took out the instrument and began scanning Vial, but was disappointed to find that the person he was looking for was not him either.

Just as he felt disappointed, sounds faintly echoed from outside the cave.

Su Sheng went out to look and saw Loren facing a group of demons, while the young man stood right behind him, extremely close to Loren.

A strange, uncomfortable feeling inexplicably surfaced in his heart.
