Qi Ye didn’t know how Shi Ran understood it, but for him, it was never about being angry.
Deciding to leave Shi Ran was the most difficult decision he had made in his life.
Qi Ye could only say, “I didn’t.”
“You still say you didn’t. You completely ignored me after the argument. What kind of friend does that?” Shi Ran said, suddenly feeling very aggrieved, but he forcibly suppressed that feeling and asked Qi Ye, “What exactly did I do to make you angry? You have to make it clear.”
“Nothing,” Qi Ye said.
“Liar, there definitely is.”
“Really, there isn’t.”
“Then why did you say those inexplicable things! And completely cut off contact with me!” Shi Ran suddenly became agitated, getting more worked up as he spoke. “If it’s not because I did something wrong and offended you, then it’s because you never considered me a friend and just wanted to get rid of me after graduation. I’m just an extra burden to you!”
Qi Ye stared blankly at him.
At that moment, the dormitory door was open, and new students and their parents were passing by from time to time. People passing by the door would curiously glance inside. Qi Ye stood up and closed the door.
His mind was also in a mess, so he simply leaned against the door, not knowing what to say.
The grievance had been released a little through the previous words, and Shi Ran calmed down slightly. “But, no one would diligently tutor a burden, right?” He looked up at him earnestly. “So, Qi Ye, I really don’t understand what you’re thinking. Can you just tell me, where exactly am I unsatisfactory to you? If I can change it, I will. If it’s something I can’t change, I’ll find a way to make up for it.”
Qi Ye actually wanted to know too, what exactly about Shi Ran was he dissatisfied with.
From the moment he fell in love with him until now, he hadn’t seen any flaws in Shi Ran.
This question was too difficult for him.
Qi Ye couldn’t help but sigh in his heart, “God, why do you have to torment me like this again? Why put such a good Shi Ran so close to me again?”
Qi Ye could only clumsily repeat, “It’s not your fault, it’s completely my problem.”
Shi Ran felt like he was going in circles with him, and he was a little speechless, but this was the Qi Ye he remembered. Clumsy, but reassuring.
Shi Ran wasn’t angry anymore. He simply crossed his arms and said proudly, “Do you know why we’re at the same university?”
Qi Ye shook his head.
“I woke up late on the day we filled out our applications. When I got to school, you had already finished and left, so I asked the teacher about your choices,” Shi Ran said. “I didn’t have any particular school I wanted to go to, I just chose a few based on my scores. It just so happened that the school you applied to was also one of my backup choices. It’s just a different major, and I never expected that we’d be assigned to the same dormitory.”
Qi Ye was stunned. He really hadn’t expected that their reunion wasn’t due to some ethereal reason, but was driven by Shi Ran in a very real way.
“You, why would you want to go to the same school as me?” Qi Ye murmured.
“What a stupid question,” Shi Ran pouted. “I said I would repay your kindness. How can I repay you if I don’t even see you? Am I supposed to pray for you every day?”
Qi Ye said, “Really, you don’t have to repay me. I wanted to do it myself.”
“Going to the same university as you is also something I wanted to do. I can’t help it, who told you to be the best person to me besides my grandpa?” Shi Ran said. “Don’t worry, I’ll protect you for the next four years of university!”
Qi Ye smiled reassuringly. He was probably really hopeless. As soon as he heard Shi Ran say that, he began to want to rely on him.
However, he still had some concerns. Qi Ye asked bitterly, “Then, what about your girlfriend?”
Shi Ran: “Huh?”
Qi Ye said sadly, “Isn’t she at the same school as us too?”
“Where did I get a girlfriend?” Shi Ran said blankly.
Qi Ye had no choice but to say, “On graduation day, didn’t you accept someone’s confession? Have you forgotten so quickly?”
“Graduation—” Shi Ran recalled for a moment, nodding and shaking his head as if he remembered something. “You mean Lin Ziqi? She’s not my girlfriend.”
Then, Shi Ran explained, “She was being bullied by classmates, forced to confess to me in front of everyone. Although she confessed very loudly, I noticed that she was trembling all over after she finished speaking, begging me in a low voice. Her whole state was completely wrong, and the people closest to her were watching us like it was a show. I guessed that they wanted to see her make a fool of herself after being rejected. I’ve seen plenty of these boring people, so I just agreed.”
“Afterwards, I explained everything to Lin Ziqi, and she understood. She said that graduation was a relief for her, and she wasn’t sad at all. It would be best if she never saw anyone from the school again. At that time, the person I thought of was you.” Shi Ran paused for a moment and continued, “I thought, I don’t care about not seeing other people, but it would be a pity not to see that guy Qi Ye.”
So that was how it was? Qi Ye had been imagining Shi Ran ending up with someone else, and worrying that his greed would inevitably cause him harm, but it was completely unrelated to reality.
He had actually run away so capriciously. If Shi Ran hadn’t been thinking of him, maybe he really would have been completely separated from Shi Ran.
Qi Ye began to feel scared.
It wasn’t that he thought anything would happen if he became Shi Ran’s roommate in college, it was just that as long as there was no one else by Shi Ran’s side, he could stay by Shi Ran’s side for a little longer. Even if it was just for one day, it would be precious enough.
But he had wasted such precious time for more than two months!
Qi Ye felt that he was the stupidest person in the world. He leaned weakly against the door and slid to the ground, sitting down with his head lowered, looking very disheveled.
Shi Ran hurriedly ran out, squatted down and asked him, “What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
Qi Ye stared at the ground in front of him, “I just suddenly feel like I’m very stupid.”
“Huh?”
“I haven’t contacted you for so many days, you must hate me,” Qi Ye murmured.
Shi Ran pursed his lips. “I wouldn’t say I hate you, but I was very angry and confused, not knowing what was going on.” Shi Ran simply sat down beside him, looking around their new dormitory, which was as empty as his heart, which he couldn’t fill during the summer vacation. “It’s really lonely when a good friend isn’t by your side. This is the first time I’ve experienced this feeling.”
Qi Ye turned his head in surprise. “Does Shi Ran also feel lonely?”
“What kind of stupid questions are you asking every day? I’m also human, okay?” Shi Ran suddenly remembered something and added, “You still haven’t answered my question. Why did you suddenly want to break off our friendship unilaterally? If it’s not because of me, then it’s your problem. What’s your problem?”
He suddenly moved closer, and Qi Ye became nervous. His heart, which had been silent for two months, began to beat again, regaining its vitality.
Qi Ye didn’t dare to meet his eyes, turned his head, and nervously licked his lips. Shi Ran seemed to suddenly realize something, “Hey, you seemed to have said the reason just now. You misunderstood that I had a girlfriend, the misunderstanding that occurred on graduation day, right? But that’s not right either, even if I really had a girlfriend, couldn’t I still be friends with you?”
