    Chapter 6: Friend Request

Even though many students complained in private about the school being heartless for making them sacrifice sleep for meaningless activities, they still arrived on time for the opening ceremony before 8:00 AM.

Old Lin! As Lin Sheng reached the entrance of the grand auditorium, he heard a familiar voice behind him.

Before he could even turn around, an arm draped over his shoulder.

What a coincidence, his childhood friend Ji Chen said, pulling him close while complaining. The school leaders must be bored. It is not like there is anything else this afternoon, yet they had to schedule this stupid ceremony so early in the morning.

Then why are you here so early? Lin Sheng glanced at him.

I am here to snag a seat in the back so I can catch up on sleep, Ji Chen said, pulling Lin Sheng along. Hurry, it is getting crowded. If we don’t move, the back rows will be gone.

When they entered to sign in, the auditorium was already scattered with people. As expected, most chose the back rows.

Two seats left, hurry! Ji Chen pulled Lin Sheng toward the last row, but Lin Sheng stopped. He was frowning at a certain direction.

Following his gaze, Ji Chen saw a young man in a blue and orange T-shirt. Sensing their eyes, Cheng Yan turned around. His expression soured when he saw Lin Sheng. It seemed they both wanted the back row, but the only two seats left were right next to Cheng Yan.

Lets go to the third row from the back, Lin Sheng said after a pause.

    Ji Chen was confused. Why?

My roommate is there. I dont want to sit next to him.

Oh? Sure. Ji Chen didnt object; the third row was fine for sleeping too.

Seeing them choose other seats, Cheng Yans tense body relaxed. He had almost stood up to leave.

Once they sat down, Ji Chen asked curiously, You dont get along with your roommate?

Not really, Lin Sheng replied. The guy has issues. He loves being sarcastic and passive-aggressive.

Then he must be hard to deal with. Ji Chen glanced back at Cheng Yan. Setting aside Lin Shengs words, his first impression of the guy wasnt bad. He looked quite well-behaved, not like a troublemaker.

Was it a case of looks being deceiving?

Have you thought about switching dorms? Ji Chen whispered.

Switching dorms? Lin Sheng realized that was an option but declined. No need for now. A room is a room. What if the next roommate is even more troublesome?

Currently, he and Cheng Yan didnt speak; it was just a cold war. If a roommate with a worse temper came along, Lin Sheng couldnt guarantee hed stay patient. Thanks to Cheng Yan, he no longer had expectations for roommates.

True. Ji Chen leaned back to sleep, asking Lin Sheng to wake him if a teacher came by.

Sure. Lin Sheng nodded. They were used to this kind of teamwork.

But this time, it seemed he wouldnt be needed. As the speakers were being tested, Ji Chen sat bolt upright.

    Forget it, I cant sleep.

? Lin Sheng looked at him. Usually, this guy could fall asleep in seconds.

I pulled an all-nighter gaming. Im too hyped up now, Ji Chen explained.

Lin Sheng understood. Ji Chen usually arrived at the last second just to sleep more; he was early today because he hadnt slept at all.

    Speaking of games…

Want to team up for a boss today? Lin Sheng remembered the hidden boss he found yesterday.

Today? No, I need to crash later. Maybe tomorrow. Arent you busy collecting your fish encyclopedia? Ji Chen waved it off.

Its a hidden boss I found yesterday. I checked the forums; theres no info on it yet, Lin Sheng replied.

An undiscovered hidden boss? Ji Chen perked up. Then we can get the first kill! Wait, Ill find some teammates. We will hit it tonight.

    …Dont you need to rest?

I can push through. Ill sleep tonight.

    Fine.

The ceremony followed the usual routine: the principals speech, the top scorer of the entrance exam speaking as the student representative, introductions of the departments, and boring words of encouragement.

It was tedious. Aside from Ji Chen mentioning that the top scorer was his roommate and also in the Aeronautics Department, Lin Sheng barely spoke to him. The long process eventually put the hyper Ji Chen to sleep.

The Aeronautics Department, like Lin Shengs Mechanical Department, was one of Typhon United Universitys elite programs. Unlike the aeronautics of Lin Shengs past life which involved planes, here it meant piloting starships.

Since it wasnt a military academy, graduates mostly worked on commercial transport ships rather than warships.

When the ceremony ended, Ji Chen woke up. As soon as they were dismissed, he dragged Lin Sheng out to contact his gaming buddies for the boss kill.

Most students were just there to fill seats, including Cheng Yan. He grabbed a quick bite at the cafeteria and headed back to his dorm to play the game.

Typhon United University had strange schedules, but the first day was easy—just the ceremony, with classes starting the next day. The afternoon and evening were free. Some students went to the commercial streets, some explored the campus, and the studious ones previewed lessons.

Cheng Yan was none of those; he chose to game.

Upon logging in, a notification popped up.

Sheng Sheng Man requested to add you as a friend.

The note read: That hidden boss from yesterday, want to fight it?

Cheng Yan froze, accepted, and messaged back: I am only level 50. Can I even help?

In his mind, a boss that could kill level 70 players had nothing to do with him.

We specifically need a level 50 player. I need a favor, you in?

I am in. Wait for me, I am coming. Cheng Yan replied immediately. The expert had helped him yesterday; it was only right to return the favor.

No problem. Lin Sheng told his teammates, Wait a bit, he is coming.

Okay, we will wait. A silver robot spoke—this was Ji Chens avatar, MK-2000.

Cheng Yan reached Moon-viewing Lake and found Lin Sheng among the four players. Lin Sheng was the only one with a beastman avatar.

Expert, what do you need me to do? he asked.

Join the party first. We are testing the trigger conditions, Lin Sheng said. Stay back. Your HP is too low; you will get one-shot.

Sure. Cheng Yan nodded and hid behind a boulder on Moon-viewing Cliff.

Lure ten mosquitoes over, Lin Sheng said while baiting his hook.

He hadn’t planned on calling Cheng Yan, as a level 50 player would do zero damage to a level 70 boss. But after several failed attempts to trigger it today, they realized a low-level player might be a requirement.

This was hard for the high-level players whose lowest-level friends were at least level 65. Lin Sheng tried adding the snow leopard beastman from yesterday. They expected to wait until tomorrow for a response, assuming a low-level player wouldnt be online much.

But they were lucky; Cheng Yan was online.

Ji Chen gave a thumbs-up, his thrusters ignited, and he charged into the mosquito swarm.

An elf hunter set traps, and a merman with a giant hammer stood by the water. As Lin Sheng cast his line, Ji Chen led the mosquitoes into the traps.

Fire erupted, incinerating them. Finally, the calm water began to boil violently.
