    Chapter 9 Vigilante

    Late night, House of Ragdoll.

The German Shepherd keenly observed his surroundings.

The woody scent of high-end silver vine furniture, the smell of freshly mown grass outside the window, the aroma of marrow bones wafting from the kitchen, and the faint scent of coffee on the bed, the frisbee gloves, the neckerchief… even on himself.

It wasn’t the common coffee smell found in every street-side shop, but a unique fragrance blended with a feline aura.

It brought to mind sunlight, soft and comfortable cushions, fluffy fur warmed by the sun, and…

Ade coughed lightly, his nose twitching as he detected a faint metallic scent of rust amidst the usual environment.

He silently drew a weapon from under his pillow, walked to the window, and placed a front paw on the window lock.

“It seems your alertness hasn’t been completely ruined by cat sniffing.” The window was wrenched open with a “creak” by a pair of hard talons. A USB drive then smacked Ade on the head. After completing the airdrop, Night Owl (Yexiao) the barrister looked down from above and said, “I’ve finished what I promised. Tell your Director to deal with Mouseros as soon as possible.”

“Of course.” Ade took the USB drive, staring with a headache at the sharp claw marks on the window frame. “This is my friend’s house, not the bureau.”

“None of my business.” Night Owl (Yexiao) the barrister followed his own rules, spreading his black wings and vanishing into the night sky. “Fix it yourself.”

Having finally made it out, he was going to visit a distant cousin he hadn’t seen in a long time.

    Ade: “…”

“Don’t be angry, Ade.” Director Mastiff was woken up in the middle of the night, chuckling. “As expected of the Black Claw Informant you developed—the legendary ‘Owl Vigilante’ soaring through the night sky. It’s understandable that these vigilantes have personalities. As long as they have justice in their hearts, they are good citizens.”

Ade didn’t want to explain that whether Night Owl (Yexiao) the barrister had justice in his heart was debatable; he was simply addicted to catching mice.

He said, “Night Owl was released to bait criminal suspects for a while. This sudden transmission to the station means he must have obtained an important lead. According to regulations, at least two officers must review it together. Since I am on an undercover mission, I’ll have to trouble the Director this time.”

“Easy, easy.” Director Mastiff brewed a cup of tea. After seriously verifying the permissions, the encrypted content on the USB drive was unlocked, revealing a video.

“To think—” The two officers looked at each other.

Because he had over four thousand identical brothers, Mouseros had committed crimes in the underworld for decades without ever being tracked down. Was his true identity finally about to be revealed?

The shaky video gradually stabilized. In the center of the frame, a fat hamster could be seen crouching under a tall solid wood chair in repentance. The camera hidden in the stealth sunglasses moved up, focusing on Mouseros, who was perched on the chair biting a cigar. He said furiously, “You don’t learn the proper business of digging holes to rob houses, but you’re an expert at peeping at the fur on other cats’ butts! I’ll deal with that Sanhua first, then I’ll crush you with a chestnut!”

    “…”

“CRACK—” As the two officers were on a video call, Director Mastiff looked at Ade in surprise: “Ade!”

The window frame, already deformed by Night Owl (Yexiao) the barrister, was yanked hard by Ade. It completely detached from the wall, twisting into an ugly metal lump.

Director Mastiff said with a long face, “That looks like a high-end custom piece. We said before that the bureau’s operational funds would cover the window repairs…”

    Now they couldn’t afford it.

    Ade: “…”

Having been born into a noble family in the Woof Kingdom, he recognized the brand of the window frame. He tallied his salary and bonuses as a police officer and silently pulled a frozen credit card from his wallet.

He made a call to inquire about unfreezing it. The reply he received was: “Come back and get married!”

Ade silently snapped the credit card in half and asked Director Mastiff, “Can I get an advance on the next six months of my salary?”
