    Chapter 5 Substitute Marriage

Four months later, Sanhua stepped into the magnificent villa once again. It was his first time meeting the little white cat young master who had taken over his identity.

Xiao Bu wore a timid smile as he walked gracefully down the stairs. “Hello, are you Sanhua? I’m Xiao Bu.”

Da Bu took a rare moment out of his schedule to accompany the two cats. He explained to Sanhua, “The engagement was a decision made by our late parents.”

“Twenty years ago, Meow Kingdom suffered a major economic crisis. At that time, the national treasury was sabotaged by the Mouse Kingdom’s capital oligarch, Mouseros. Prices in Meow Kingdom skyrocketed, and the Dried Fish Index reached a record 17.4. The House of Ragdoll’s cash flow took a heavy hit, and we nearly went bankrupt. It was then that the neighboring Shepherd Conglomerate extended a helping hand, supporting the House of Ragdoll with 10,000 tons of Marrow Bones. This helped the House of Ragdoll survive the crisis. To thank the old Shepherd couple, our parents signed a marriage contract with them, agreeing that their unborn children would be engaged to their eldest son upon reaching adulthood.”

    “Why…”

Having already guessed what Sanhua wanted to ask, Da Bu explained in a cold tone, “Because in the neighboring Woof Kingdom, the Single Dog phenomenon has become widespread. The old Shepherd couple was terrified that their son would also become one of those single dogs, living a life of loneliness. Meanwhile, as cat nobility, we Ragdolls are the dream marriage partners for many races.”

    Sanhua: “…”

He did indeed want to know why a dog as handsome, cool, majestic, and generous as a German Shepherd would fall to the point of needing an arranged marriage.

“Alright.” Sanhua gave a polite smile. “Then, could I see a photo of that young master Shepherd?”

“Later. I didn’t prepare one today,” Da Bu said, suppressing a faint, imperceptible trace of guilt in his heart.

He would not let Sanhua see the German Shepherd’s photo. He was afraid that Sanhua would be frightened after seeing it, just like Xiao Bu, and refuse to marry him.

The reputation of the House of Ragdoll could not be tarnished. For that, sacrificing a younger brother like Sanhua, who lacked a CFA Certificate…

    Da Bu closed his eyes.

He knew he was wrong, but he didn’t want to change.

Perhaps he was simply born to be such a despicable and shameless cat.

After confirming the cat chosen for the engagement with the House of Shepherd, Sanhua was politely but firmly kept in the cat villa.

In Da Bu’s words: “To cultivate noble temperament, lest the young master Shepherd finds you displeasing.”

Xiao Bu volunteered to help him get familiar with the home.

Upon learning he didn’t have to marry a dog, the white cat returned to his usual innocent and sweet demeanor. He flew up and down the villa like a light cloud, introducing things to Sanhua in a voice as pleasant as a bell:

“Brother Sanhua, the wardrobe contains Meow-nel’s new arrivals for this season. Try them on and see if they fit.”

“On the dressing table is a bottle of Braised Bone-scented perfume I got for you. I heard all the dogs in Woof Kingdom love this scent.”

    “And—”

“Meow, meow, meow, surprise!” He led Sanhua to the villa’s lawn. The expensive cat trees had been moved aside in advance, replaced by a stack of red frisbees with bone logos and targets painted with red circles standing at the edge of the grass.

“Brother Sanhua, I checked on Sou-Dog for you. All dogs love playing frisbee. Playing frisbee with them is the number one recommended activity for couples on Woof Kingdom’s relationship shows!”

Xiao Bu puffed out his chest. “These are the trendiest brand-name frisbees in Woof Kingdom. I had the maids bypass the firewall to grab them from the official website. They stayed up for several nights just to get them!”

Sanhua met his gaze. “…Thank you?”

“You’re welcome, we’re brothers after all.” Xiao Bu gave a happy meow. “Shall we start learning?”

Although he hadn’t had much contact with this kind of Woof Kingdom sport, Xiao Bu had received a noble education since childhood. Climbing trees, parkour, and chasing bells were all second nature to him. He was very confident in his athletic talent.

After looking up tutorials online last night and practicing privately a few times, Xiao Bu said, “Brother Sanhua, stand behind me and watch my movements carefully.”

As he spoke, he curled his tail around a frisbee.

“Whoosh—” His fluffy white tail flicked lightly, and the frisbee flew like an arrow from a bow.

The tips of Xiao Bu’s white ears twitched.

…Eh? Did he hear wrong? Why were there two whooshes?

Just as the thought crossed his mind, a gust of wind rushed past his ear, blowing the fur on his back. A red frisbee carved a cold, sharp arc through the air, arriving first despite being thrown later. It struck the first target on the opposite side, then the second, the third…

Until the targets had all fallen, this frisbee finally collided with the one Xiao Bu had thrown, making a crisp clinking sound.

Sanhua, who had moved there at some unknown point, lightly hooked his tail. Before the frisbee could hit the ground, it was back in his possession.

Xiao Bu’s eyes widened in shock. “S-Sanhua, how are you so good at frisbee?”

Sanhua: “Is it hard?” Don’t you just need a tail?

Xiao Bu looked at him with tearful eyes, as if Sanhua had kept some massive secret from him.

So Sanhua said, “Oh, I thought a friend might like it, so I took some time to learn.

“I plan to give him a surprise.”

Sanhua hadn’t appeared at the Cat Café for two weeks.

Although the café had other cat employees, and as the owner, he didn’t have to work every single day, still…

Passing by the Cat Café once again and looking at his reflection in the glass door, the German Shepherd’s footsteps involuntarily turned inside.

The Corgi beside him tilted his head. “Ade, relax. We just closed a big case. Can’t you give me a smile?”

The German Shepherd curled the corners of his mouth absentmindedly.

“Forget it, you’d better not smile. That dark face of yours is enough to scare a dog to death. No wonder your parents wanted to arrange a marriage for you so early. I heard they’ve been pressuring you to go home and get married lately? Have you met the other party yet?”

The German Shepherd glanced at him, and the Corgi sensibly made a gesture as if putting on a muzzle.

He sighed about how some dogs have all the luck while others have none. He casually snatched a small biscuit from a cat waiter’s plate and asked while biting it, “By the way, why haven’t I seen Boss Sanhua in a long time?”

The German Shepherd’s black ear tips perked up quietly.

The Cow Cat he was questioning suddenly arched her back. When she saw it was the two dogs, Ade and the other, she finally relaxed.

She hesitated for a moment, then remembered how well Sanhua had treated her in the past. Her gaze slowly became determined.

“Officer, I want to report a crime!”

    “?”
