Chapter 58: The Word ‘Snake’ is Forbidden?

He Hongsheng’s reason for sending him to Hanxiao Star was something Xiang Heng had considered.

First, He Hongsheng needed someone on Hanxiao Star to temporarily stall He Chen. Xiang Heng understood He Chen and could be somewhat useful.

Second, He Hongsheng still didn’t trust him and wanted to use this opportunity to see if he would contact He Chen or expose any flaws.

But at this moment, Xiang Heng suddenly realized that none of that mattered; they weren’t He Hongsheng’s main goal.

Ever since He Chen pinned him to the wall with a sword at the He family estate, He Hongsheng had hated He Chen to the bone. He simply lacked the power to kill He Chen and take revenge.

But who said revenge only involved killing He Chen?

He Hongsheng had asked Xiang Heng about He Chen’s weaknesses. Xiang Heng hadn’t answered one, but He Hongsheng would know it just by going online: He Chen cared about He Leyan. He Leyan was his greatest soft spot.

It was likely that the core mission of those monitoring him focused entirely on Leyan. The moment He Chen returned to “Hanhe” in name, they immediately seized the opportunity to act!

Everything else was just He Hongsheng distracting attention!

Xiang Heng remained expressionless and accelerated again. Just then, the small building where He Leyan and the others were staying erupted in the sounds of fighting.

Xiang Heng looked up and saw Ning Tian’s mental projection, wrapped around a small figure, leaping out of a second-floor window.

Hearing the child’s loud, clear cries, Xiang Heng let out a long sigh of relief.

He melted back into the darkness, collecting his thoughts, remaining silent, and guarding against any unexpected developments.

    *

“Colonel Xiang, Colonel Xiang?” The door was knocked. Xiang Heng opened it from the inside, looking slightly weary, and quickly stuffed something into his pocket.

“Big habit you got there, in the middle of the night.” The man glanced dismissively at Xiang Heng’s pocket, though his vigilance eased slightly.

“What is it?” Xiang Heng pushed the corner of the Iceblood Crystal deeper into his pocket, asking with suppressed irritation.

That’s what happens when you interrupt someone’s “enjoyment.” The man didn’t mind. “Something happened. We need to return to Pingshan.”

“Something happened? What?” Xiang Heng frowned.

“The negotiations are about to collapse. He Chen ran off to Shangyun Star. Plus, there was a fire and a robbery here tonight. It’s not safe for us to stay, so we’re leaving. Five minutes, pack your bags!”

“A fire? A robbery?” Xiang Heng grabbed the man’s arm. “Did someone get hurt?”

“What, worried about your former comrade?” the man asked, his expression growing more disrespectful, but his guard dropping further.

Xiang Heng released him. “Never mind. I’ll go pack.”

The man stopped instead. “I’m not sure about the details, but one of those two brats was seriously injured. Hurry up, we have to leave immediately.”

“Alright.” Xiang Heng turned his back, clenching his fists.

    *

“Where was he injured?” At four in the morning, He Chen asked as he strode quickly toward the hovercar.

    His face was extremely grim.

“The right shoulder. Treatment is underway. There are toxins, but they are temporarily controlled,” Ning Tian reported from the other end of the terminal.

Hearing “toxins,” He Chen clenched his fingers tightly and stepped into the hovercar. “Tell the doctor to stabilize the toxins and prevent them from spreading. I will hire—”

“I’ve already called in the best professional team from Star Capital.” A voice came from the opposite side of the hovercar.

Lu Changqing entered the hovercar through the other door. “Don’t rush. Mo Yan’s mental projection is the Dark Gold Python. It is inherently highly venomous and highly resistant to toxins. Mo Yan is one with it, so the toxins’ effect on him will be greatly reduced.”

    “Really?” He Chen asked instinctively.

“I wouldn’t joke about something like this,” Lu Changqing said, signaling the driver to start.

He Chen suddenly realized, “You’re recovering from an injury. You don’t need to come back with me.”

“My injury is minor,” Lu Changqing said, extending his hand.

“What do you need?” He Chen asked, examining Lu Changqing’s pale complexion.

“Big Wolf.” Lu Changqing didn’t wait for He Chen’s reaction. He directly grasped his wrist, entered his mental domain, and brought out the Snow Wolf, which was covered in injuries and looked listless.

“You rest for a bit.” Placing his hand on Big Wolf’s wounds, Lu Changqing told He Chen.

He Chen frowned. “I’m fine, you—”

“You are not fine.” Although He Chen looked unharmed, he bore half of the injuries the Snow Wolf sustained. Lu Changqing didn’t believe he was okay.

“Be quiet. Don’t disturb my treatment,” he said, coaxing him like a child. With his other hand, he grabbed He Chen, and his mental power surged into his body as well…

With the cruising speed maximized, He Chen and Lu Changqing arrived at He Moyan’s hospital room just as dawn broke.

“Dad! Daddy!” He Leyan, who was sitting on a chair outside the door, saw them, and his eyes immediately turned red. He threw himself into He Chen’s arms. “Brother is hurt! He bled so much!”

“It’s alright, Leyan. Be good, don’t be afraid. The doctors are here. Brother will be fine.” He Chen hugged He Leyan’s trembling little body tightly and looked toward the hospital room.

Lu Changqing took Leyan, letting He Chen enter the room first, and comforted He Leyan. “Leyan, don’t worry. Your brother is not in danger.”

“Daddy, woo-woo.” He Leyan cried, burying his face in Lu Changqing’s shoulder. The tears he had held back all night burst forth like a flood. “Brother, Brother protected me, that’s why the bad guys hit him. It’s all my fault!”

He Chen, who had just stepped into the room, paused for a moment. He resisted the urge to comfort Leyan and went straight to Mo Yan on the hospital bed.

He Moyan’s shoulder was wrapped in bandages, and an external device was humming softly at the wound site. He was lying unconscious with his eyes closed.

“Still unconscious?” He Chen asked, his face dark.

“He’s sleeping, Commander!” the doctor quickly reported. “To limit the spread of toxins, we temporarily placed an artificial blood vessel externally for extracorporeal circulation. We gave the patient medication to prevent embolism, and that medicine has a slight sedative effect.”

He Chen felt somewhat relieved. He walked over and stroked He Moyan’s stiff, dark hair.

Usually, this boy never let him touch him, dodging quickly and forcefully before his hand even reached him.

I’m sorry. He Chen stared at the wound on Mo Yan’s shoulder, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.

Lu Changqing walked in then, set Leyan down, sat by the bed, and held He Moyan’s hand, summoning his mental projection, Little Black.

Little Black looked listless and didn’t seem interested in interacting. It coiled up on He Moyan’s blanket.

Lu Changqing covered Little Black’s body with both hands, closed his eyes, and began treating it.

He Chen looked at Lu Changqing. “Your injury hasn’t healed. Can’t we let Wen Yi handle this?”

“This situation is unique. Wen Yi might not be suitable. Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing,” Lu Changqing replied.

Just then, Ning Tian walked in and whispered a few words into He Chen’s ear.

After listening, He Chen wanted to say something, but fearing he would disturb Lu Changqing, he took Leyan and walked out of the room.

    *

“It doesn’t matter if they died. Dead men are still evidence. Seal off the Pingshan negotiation team’s residence. No one is allowed in or out…” Standing in the hallway, He Chen calmly instructed Ning Tian.

“Is Chu Yunqi alright?” He Chen asked again. He already knew that the incident occurred just as a fire broke out at Chu Yunqi’s residence.

To lure the tiger away from the mountain, burning Chu Yunqi’s place was naturally the most effective method.

“He’s fine,” Ning Tian replied. “There’s something else I couldn’t report over the comms—”

The hallway was empty, but Ning Tian still lowered his voice significantly. “When the incident happened, someone warned me, but strangely, the communication record disappeared from my terminal.”

Disappeared? He Chen listened, his mind quickly processing: It sounds like a hacker’s work.

“Fortunately, we had that warning, otherwise—” Ning Tian said.

He didn’t finish the sentence, but He Chen automatically completed his meaning. Without the warning, if Ning Tian had been a moment later, He Moyan alone couldn’t have defended against the two attackers, and the consequences would have been unimaginable.

He Chen tightened his grip on He Leyan’s hand, noticing the boy silently pressing closer to his leg. His heart ached, and he picked him up.

“Who do you think gave the warning?” Ning Tian whispered. “Could it be—”

“Watch your words.” He Chen sharply interrupted Ning Tian with a raised eye.

He Chen knew who Ning Tian was about to mention, but knowing it internally was enough.

Since that person was so cautious, he must be in great danger. Speaking his name would only increase that risk. He Chen only regretted that he had been intimidated by a few harsh words back then and hadn’t stopped him from embarking on a perilous path…

Ning Tian closed his mouth, opened his terminal, and pulled up an image. Avoiding Leyan, he showed it to He Chen. “The base’s official account and your personal official account both received this anonymous email.”

He Chen looked down and had to clench his jaw to suppress his rage.

The image was a collage of multiple photos, all bloody and cruel, showing children with missing limbs who had been tortured and murdered.

This was a boast, and a threat!

“Give me a few men. I’ll go to Pingshan. This debt must be repaid,” Ning Tian said coldly.

“And after you repay it? How will you return? Will you just throw your lives away?” He Chen looked at him sternly.

Revenge must be taken, but not so rashly. The enemy wanted to provoke him, and he wouldn’t fall for it.

He Chen’s eyes calmed. “Was the Pingshan negotiation team’s ship intercepted?”

“No,” Ning Tian lowered his head and replied.

“They withdrew less than five minutes after the incident. By the time we notified the port to intercept, it was too late. It was my dereliction of duty for not reacting immediately.” Ning Tian bit his lip hard, tasting blood.

“Whether they leave or not doesn’t matter much. Even if we detained them, He Hongsheng wouldn’t compromise because of them.” He Chen analyzed calmly, looking at Ning Tian. “Look up.”

His tone wasn’t particularly gentle, but his eyes showed concern. “Are you injured? Did you get any toxins on you?”

    “No,” Ning Tian answered softly.

After answering, he looked up at He Chen. “I heard they said you were—”

Ning Tian was cut off by He Chen’s look.

Ning Tian glanced at He Leyan, who was curled up in He Chen’s arms, eyes half-closed and nearly asleep, and understood.

“Was that young man one of your soldiers?” He Chen asked in a low voice.

    “Yes,” Ning Tian replied.

He Chen spoke. “The battlefield changes rapidly. Uncontrollable accidents are normal, however—”

His tone shifted, becoming severe. “Precisely because of accidents, you must control every factor you can control. Is this not something you teach your soldiers?”

“Subordinate accepts the fault!” Ning Tian snapped to attention and replied.

He Leyan jolted awake and tightly hooked his arms around He Chen’s neck.

He Chen’s heart ached: The child must have been startled.

“Lower your voice!” He Chen glared at Ning Tian, readjusted Leyan to let him sleep, and patted the child while looking at Ning Tian. “You didn’t train him well. You’ll both receive punishment when we return, his single portion, yours double.”

“Yes.” Ning Tian instinctively clenched his hand. A flicker of apprehension crossed his icy face, but he didn’t say another word.

“Punishment for what?” A voice suddenly came from behind them.

He Chen turned around, his expression quickly adjusting, the severity mostly gone. “Your Highness, aren’t you resting? Your Highness must have been startled tonight.”

—He was indeed badly startled. Chu Yunqi had four guards with him just to walk these few steps.

“I can’t sleep. When did you get back?” Chu Yunqi asked.

“I just returned. I was getting an update from Ning Tian.”

“The situation is that those bastards created a diversion, trying to kill—”

Chu Yunqi stopped just as the word “kill” left his mouth, meeting He Chen’s gaze.

Seeing He Chen covering He Leyan’s ears, Chu Yunqi understood: some things couldn’t be said, they would frighten the child.

In the past, Chu Yunqi wouldn’t have cared. He said whatever he wanted, regardless of how others felt.

But now, he was gradually developing a bit of empathy.

“I just contacted Star Capital. My Imperial Father’s medical team has someone skilled in detoxification. I called that person over, and they are leaving now,” Chu Yunqi said.

“Thank you, Your Highness.” He Chen’s expression became solemn, and he gave Chu Yunqi a formal bow.

Ning Tian, standing behind He Chen, glanced at Chu Yunqi with slight surprise. Seeing Chu Yunqi look over, he lowered his head slightly and also bowed.

Chu Yunqi scanned Ning Tian’s face, especially his bleeding lower lip, and frowned at He Chen. “This was an accident. It doesn’t count as dereliction of duty. You don’t need to punish him so harshly, do you?”

…What the hell? He Chen looked back at Ning Tian, his mouth twitching.

“Your Highness misunderstands. I don’t punish people like that,” he turned back and said.

“Oh.” Chu Yunqi realized his mistake.

Looking closely, Ning Tian’s lip still had teeth marks. He Chen couldn’t possibly have bitten him, so he must have bitten himself.

Biting… Chu Yunqi swallowed inappropriately, held back for a long time, and finally managed to say, “Then you two carry on.”

He turned to leave, but after two steps, he stopped again. “Have you found out who did it?”

“Not yet, but according to Ning Tian’s report, the assassins appeared in the Pingshan Base negotiation team,” He Chen replied.

Ning Tian couldn’t help but glance at him: We haven’t found the evidence yet.

“So, the Pingshan Base wanted to—” Chu Yunqi furrowed his brow, almost saying the word “kill” again, but he saw the little kid in He Chen’s arms and stopped in time.

He Chen nodded, his face serious, his tone cold. “I injured He Hongsheng’s right shoulder. Coincidentally, Mo Yan was injured in the exact same spot.”

That’s right! Chu Yunqi’s eyebrows jumped.

Ning Tian secretly glanced at him, then back at He Chen: The assassin hitting Mo Yan’s right shoulder was purely a natural reaction during the back-and-forth of combat, not intentional.

Never mind… Lying to a fool isn’t really lying.

“However, none of this counts as evidence. We must find out the truth as quickly as possible and give Your Highness justice. No matter who is behind this, they are truly audacious, willing to put Your Highness in mortal danger just to attack Leyan!” He Chen exclaimed indignantly.

“Yes, we must investigate thoroughly.” Chu Yunqi was also furious. Normally, he would have jumped up in agitation, but tonight he was mentally exhausted, and even his anger felt listless. Moreover, compared to his usual explosive rage, Chu Yunqi’s eyes now held more contemplation: His mother had told him the He family was unreliable before, and he hadn’t believed her. Now he did.

He had been too naive before. Chu Yunqi nodded to He Chen, turned, and walked away with his guards.

The further he walked, the darker his eyes became.

He Chen watched his retreating figure for a moment, then withdrew his gaze, patting the sleepy He Leyan in his arms. He composed himself and returned to the hospital room.

He Moyan was actually awake. Lu Changqing was holding a straw cup and feeding him water.

Seeing He Chen enter, He Moyan looked at him. His cool face remained expressionless, and he closed his eyes, ready to sleep again.

“Wait a moment before sleeping,” He Chen said, feeling both distressed and helpless. “Does anything hurt? Are you uncomfortable anywhere? You have to tell me so the doctor knows how to relieve it.”

He Moyan’s thought process was unusual, and He Chen had experience. Even the simplest logic needed to be broken down for him to understand.

“No. Sleepy.” He Moyan said weakly, looking at He Leyan in He Chen’s arms, frowning. “Why is he crying?”

He had clearly protected the little thing. Did he miss something, allowing him to get hurt?

“Leyan was worried about you,” He Chen said, setting down the squirming He Leyan.

He Leyan was just tall enough for the hospital bed. He was very sensible, knowing not to touch the tubes and instruments. He carefully avoided them and gently, rhythmically patted He Moyan’s blanket. “Brother, sleep well.”

He would sleep better if he wasn’t being patted. But He Moyan didn’t say anything and obediently closed his eyes.

He Chen looked at the two of them, rubbed He Leyan’s head, and turned his gaze to Lu Changqing. “I had some light food prepared. Senior Brother, eat a little and go rest?”

    “You too,” Lu Changqing said.

“I’ll stay here and watch them for a while, then I’ll go eat,” He Chen said.

“Then why don’t you have the food sent here? Leyan needs to eat something too,” Lu Changqing suggested.

    That works.

He Chen signaled Ning Tian to arrange it. He looked at Lu Changqing again, having many things to say, but unsure where to start.

“They set the fire at Chu Yunqi’s residence?” Lu Changqing asked first.

    “Yes,” He Chen replied.

He didn’t know how to discuss certain things with Lu Changqing, but he was straightforward about business. “He Hongsheng’s so-called negotiation might all be a facade. From beginning to end, he only wanted to—”

He Chen didn’t finish what he only wanted, mindful of Leyan, and said coldly, “He truly has a scorpion heart.”

“Mm.” Lu Changqing agreed with a nod, but then suddenly looked up. “He truly has a what?”

“He truly has a—” He Chen looked at He Moyan, who had opened his eyes and was staring intently at him. He looked at He Leyan, who was looking at him with the same hostility as his brother. Then he looked at Lu Changqing, who was also staring at him for some reason.

Finally, he bravely glanced at Little Black, who was sliding on He Moyan’s blanket with a soft hiss and raising its head.

“He truly has a poisonous scorpion heart?”
