    Chapter 38 Survival Instinct

    “You’re back?”

Returning to the Yuhe Cloud Estate late at night, Lu Changqing had just turned on the lights when the doorbell rang. He opened the door and was surprised to see He Chen standing outside.

    “What’s wrong?” Lu Changqing frowned.

“Leyan has a fever. He’s delirious and won’t wake up when called. I don’t know what’s bothering him,” He Chen said. His tone was relatively calm, but his expression was anxious.

“Don’t panic,” Lu Changqing said calmly. He closed the door and followed He Chen next door.

He Moyan was also awake. Whether it was He Chen’s arrangement or not, he was silently guarding He Leyan’s bedside. Only when he saw He Chen and Lu Changqing approach did he move away from the side of the bed.

A snake and a wolf also moved aside at the same time.

The eyes of the snake, the eyes of the wolf, plus the two pairs of eyes—one large, one small—belonging to He Chen and He Moyan, were all intensely focused on Lu Changqing.

    Lu Changqing paused.

“A child’s resistance is not as strong as an adult’s. It’s normal for them to get sick and run a fever.” After explaining this to them, Lu Changqing sat by the bed and reached out to touch He Leyan’s forehead.

It was indeed very hot, and the little face was flushed from the fever.

Lu Changqing called He Leyan’s name twice more, but He Leyan didn’t respond. His little eyebrows just furrowed, as if he was uncomfortable somewhere.

He Chen secretly clenched his hand. “He wouldn’t wake up when I called him just now.”

“There are no signs of dehydration, and his heart rate and breathing are normal. No need to panic,” Lu Changqing said. He held He Leyan’s palm and entered the child’s mental domain.

After calling out twice in the mental domain, He Leyan finally woke up groggily.

    “Daddy?”

Lu Changqing withdrew from his mental domain. “Leyan, you have a fever. Where do you feel uncomfortable? Does your throat hurt?”

“It doesn’t hurt.” He Leyan shook his head. “I’m so hot.”

He twisted his body, pushing off the small blanket covering him.

The big wolf had secretly done a lot of “nursing” work back at the base. Seeing He Leyan kick off the blanket, it instinctively picked up the blanket with its mouth, intending to cover him again. But He Leyan hugged the big wolf, buried his face in the wolf’s cool, long fur, closed his eyes again, and drifted back to sleep, exhausted.

    Lu Changqing frowned.

Almost simultaneously, He Chen suddenly stepped forward, pulled open He Leyan’s eyelids, and looked into the depths of He Leyan’s pupils.

He saw a faint, extremely thin line of ethereal blue.

“Don’t panic. Once we know the problem, we can address it specifically.”

In the Medical Institute’s examination room, Lu Changqing calmly reassured He Chen while looking at He Leyan’s infrared scan.

“I know. But,” He Chen sat in front of the examination table, holding one of the small hands of the sleeping He Leyan, his expression grave, “Leyan is still young. We can’t possibly use that kind of inhibitor on him.”

“The concentration in his body is lower than yours, and this is his first episode. It’s not that serious. We still have time to continuously experiment and adjust the efficacy of the medicine. We will find a suitable agent for him.”

That’s right. There are always more solutions than problems.

If all else failed, he could break into the Sirius Clan. Rupert must know something.

He Chen clenched his fingers, then suddenly heard Lu Changqing say, “Let go of him first.”

    Hmm?

“No, you lie down, hold his hand, and undergo a checkup with him,” Lu Changqing corrected himself.

He Chen didn’t understand why, but he complied.

After the scan, he walked over to the optical computer and finally understood Lu Changqing’s intention in asking him to do that.

In the infrared image, the two hands he and He Leyan were clasping were noticeably warmer than the rest of their bodies.

    “What does this mean?”

“It’s unclear. The most likely possibility is that this substance in your bodies is mutually attractive when active.”

“Also—” Lu Changqing glanced at He Chen. “You have a fever yourself.”

“I’m fine. I’m used to it.” He Chen was more concerned about Lu Changqing’s previous statement. “Mutually attractive? Does that mean the substance is fluid? Can we draw it out?”

    His eyes lit up.

“We can try—” Before Lu Changqing could finish, He Chen had already strode back to He Leyan’s side. He held the child’s small hand with his left hand and pulled out a dagger with his right, slashing his own palm.

“What are you doing?” Lu Changqing’s expression changed.

“Trying to see if we can draw it out?”

“Draw it out where? Into the air, or into Leyan’s body?”

Into Leyan’s body? He Chen immediately let go of He Leyan’s hand.

Lu Changqing had already found gauze and walked over, pressing down on He Chen’s palm.

“Take care of yourself first, before doing anything else.” Lu Changqing’s voice was low, with a hint of coldness.

“It’s a small wound. With my physique, it will heal quickly.” He Chen felt a little awkward watching Lu Changqing seriously wrap gauze around his palm. “I was impulsive.”

“When I said we could try, I meant trying using scientific methods, not acting recklessly like this,” Lu Changqing’s voice softened slightly.

“What scientific methods? Does this count as one of the methods?” He raised his hand, then asked, “Leyan hasn’t broken his fever yet. Can we hurry up and try?”

“Yes,” Lu Changqing said. He had He Chen lie down on the examination table and placed a towel over his eyes to shield him from the bright light.

“What method is this?” He Chen asked, confused.

“A method to keep my brain quiet.”

“…Can I lie down with Leyan?” He Chen asked softly. When he didn’t hear Lu Changqing answer, he gave up.

He released the Snow Wolf to guard Leyan, allowing the wolf to provide physical cooling for the cub.

“Um, if you can’t think of anything, can you… call a few professionals to brainstorm?”

After waiting a moment, he spoke again.

“I already did,” Lu Changqing said.

“Then try any methods you come up with on me first!” He Chen immediately said.

“I know.” Lu Changqing paused for a moment before answering.

“Thank you.” He Chen said. After a while, he secretly pulled back the towel and looked at Lu Changqing.

Lu Changqing seemed to sense it and looked back at him. “What is it now?”

“Nothing. You, your complexion doesn’t look good.”

He Chen had been too worried about He Leyan to notice, but when Lu Changqing was treating his wound just now, he realized that Lu Changqing’s face looked unusually pale tonight.

    Lu Changqing paused.

“I’m fine.” He walked over and placed his hand on He Chen’s wrist. “Sleep, chatterbox.”

Who’s a chatterbox? He Chen opened his mouth to retort, but meeting Lu Changqing’s swirling eyes, his mind suddenly went blank…

“The black one goes on the left, the red one goes on the right. Don’t mix up the positions…”

Drowsily, He Chen heard a familiar soft, childish voice and felt a pair of small hands rustling and fumbling over his body… Leyan? He Chen abruptly opened his eyes.

“You’re awake?” He Leyan met his gaze, completely unfazed. His soft little hand pressed something onto his neck.

“What is this?” He Chen reached out to touch it, then stopped halfway, changing his movement to feel He Leyan’s forehead. “You don’t have a fever anymore?”

“No fever.” He Leyan nodded, continuing to fiddle with the things in his hand. He Chen followed his movements with his eyes and saw that several conductive wires used for mental power treatment were connected to his body. The integrated end of the wires was actually held in He Leyan’s small hand.

He Chen was so startled he didn’t dare move. “Leyan, you’re too young. You can’t link with Daddy—”

“You’re awake, Commander He.” Wen Yi pushed the door open and entered at that moment.

“Doctor Wen.” He Chen greeted him. He wanted to sit up but didn’t dare. He looked sternly at Wen Yi. “Doctor Wen, Leyan is linked to me. How do I disconnect?”

Wen Yi was momentarily stunned. He only understood what was happening after seeing the objects in Leyan’s hand. “The instrument isn’t connected, Commander He. Don’t worry.”

Wen Yi said, looking at He Leyan and pinching his cheek. “You little rascal, playing with Doctor Wen’s things again.”

“Studying, not playing,” He Leyan argued, snuggling closer to He Chen. He wanted to learn quickly so he could treat his father.

He Chen now understood what was going on. He sat up, shielding Leyan, and looked at Wen Yi. “Sorry, Doctor Wen, I wasn’t paying attention just now.”

Wen Yi didn’t mind, smiling and shaking his head. Following He Chen’s movement as he stood up… he glanced at the top of his head.

He Chen now looked closely at He Leyan, rubbing his little head. “Are you uncomfortable anywhere?”

He Leyan shook his head. “What about you? Daddy said to wake you up at nine. Sleeping too long will cause a headache.”

“I’m fine,” He Chen said, looking around, searching for something with his eyes. “Where is your Daddy?”

“The Director had some temporary business and asked me to look after Leyan,” Wen Yi explained. “Commander He, would you like—”

He was about to say, “Would you like to have breakfast?” After all, the Director had specifically instructed him to take care of Leyan… and Leyan’s father.

But as the words reached his lips, Wen Yi couldn’t suppress his curiosity and changed tack. “Commander He, is this a reaction to the active period?”

    Which one?

Noticing Wen Yi’s gaze sweeping over the top of his head, He Chen had a bad feeling.

“Ahem, this kind of reaction is quite rare. I haven’t seen many.” Although he tried to control it, a hint of curiosity leaked from Wen Yi’s eyes. “Excuse me, if it’s not offensive, could I perform an examination?”

As he spoke, the fingers of the hand behind his back even twitched with eagerness.

“Examine what?” A cold voice suddenly came from behind.

“Director.” Wen Yi turned around, meeting Lu Changqing’s calm but inexplicably imposing gaze. His mind suddenly cleared.

“Nothing, Director. Commander He just woke up. I was asking if he felt uncomfortable anywhere.”

“Thank you, Doctor Wen. I feel fine.” He Chen stood up, rubbed He Leyan’s head, and walked toward Lu Changqing, lowering his voice to ask, “Where did you go? How did Leyan’s fever break? Why did I sleep for so long?”

“Ask your questions one at a time,” Lu Changqing said calmly, leading him into his adjacent office.

Alright. “How did Leyan’s fever break?”

“It broke naturally.” Lu Changqing gestured for He Chen to sit on the sofa, took a cup, and poured him a cup of warm water from the dispenser.

“Did you test any methods yesterday?” He Chen asked again.

“We tested several methods. Several biological and chemical adsorption methods didn’t work. We’ll try again during the next active period.”

“Next active period?” He Chen frowned.

“Leyan’s fever broke naturally, and his bodily functions weren’t affected. The problem isn’t serious. Don’t be overly anxious.”

Lu Changqing sat down in his office chair, glanced at He Chen’s furry, perked-up beast ears, looked away, unbuttoned a collar button, and began reviewing some documents on the optical computer.

“You tested several methods? Did they completely fail?” He Chen asked, somewhat agitated.

“Also, can we make a deal? No matter what happens in the future, can you please stop hypnotizing me?”

“It makes me very anxious. I can’t sleep when Leyan’s condition is still uncertain.”

“I was watching Leyan. You are in your active period. If your emotions are too tense, it could trigger a rampage,” Lu Changqing explained. Halfway through his sentence, he looked at He Chen’s tightly wound state and stopped. “I understand. I won’t do it next time.”

“Thank you.” That was exactly what He Chen wanted to hear. His body visibly relaxed, and so did his nerves. After relaxing, he couldn’t help but ponder Lu Changqing’s words for a moment. “So you were afraid I would rampage, not that you found me verbose?”

Lu Changqing paused. “A bit of both.”

    “…”

“Is Leyan’s body really unaffected?” He Chen asked again.

Lu Changqing didn’t waste words and directly sent He Chen a report.

He Chen looked down and read it, his heart settling considerably. He glanced at Lu Changqing, seeing that he was focused on the optical computer and not paying attention to him, and quietly reached up to touch the top of his head:

    !

They had indeed popped out again…

“Ahem, is Senior Brother very busy? Can you find someone to continue the experiments? I should still be in the active period.”

Putting his hand down, He Chen asked with a serious, proper demeanor.

So proper that it was as if the wolf ears on his head didn’t exist.

“You were injected with medication last night. We need to wait for it to metabolize before conducting new experiments,” Lu Changqing said calmly.

“Oh,” He Chen replied, touching his head. He had no memory of what happened after last night.

“The medication may have adverse reactions. Don’t wander around these two days, and tell me immediately if you feel unwell,” Lu Changqing added.

“Okay, I’ll stay at home.” He Chen was very cooperative. He wouldn’t go anywhere. Once the medicine metabolized, they could immediately conduct new experiments.

“Then I won’t disturb you.” He Chen stood up. Lu Changqing looked very busy, but he wondered— “Senior Brother, have you rested or eaten breakfast?”

Lu Changqing looked up at him. “Not yet.”

Hmm? He Leyan, who had just walked into the room, was stunned. Didn’t Daddy eat breakfast with him? Why did he say “not yet”?

“Shh!” Wen Yi pulled back He Leyan, who was about to speak. “Director, Commander He hasn’t eaten either. Should I have two portions of breakfast sent over?”

“Good.” Lu Changqing looked at Wen Yi, his expression serious—but completely lacking the previous oppressive feeling. “Leyan hasn’t been back for a long time. While you’re at it, check his homework.”

Wen Yi nodded. “Yes, I understand!”
