    Chapter 9 Yu Mansion (VI)

This was Meizhi’s revenge spanning half a century, and a slaughter that had been lurking day and night.

This was Meizhi’s revenge spanning half a century, and a slaughter that had been lurking day and night.

Chengzi didn’t die. Would Meizhi return? Or would she extend her hand toward someone else?

But where were the descendants of that family now? Chu Yu asked, “Do you know who the other person is?”

Chengzi shook her head, her fingers tightly clutching the blanket. “I don’t know… I’m really scared.”

Chu Yu frowned, lightly tapping the railing with her finger. Meizhi had escaped, and Li Heru was missing. Being confined to the hospital room to protect Chengzi’s safety was truly frustrating.

But conversely, perhaps she could wait here for Meizhi to seize an opportunity for revenge.

“Sister Ming, how did you burn that incense ash? Can you teach me?” Chu Yu called Ming Wanli. Twenty minutes later, Chu Yu rushed up with a bag of burned incense ash.

The hospital lacked many things, but funeral shops were everywhere.

Along the way, ghost shadows were everywhere, with sick souls wandering around. Chu Yu dodged and weaved, causing passersby to stare at her.

Since she had been able to see ghosts, this was the first time she had seen so many. The ghosts in the hospital were not as menacing as those elsewhere; they were all gaunt, their soul bodies a thin, dark gray, walking with their feet dragging woodenly.

Chu Yu couldn’t bear the sight. When no one was looking, she quietly sprinkled some incense ash in a corner. A group of ghosts immediately rushed over and began to devour it ravenously.

This incense ash only harmed vengeful ghosts who had killed people; for these sick ghosts, it was a rare delicacy.

Chengzi’s room was a private one. Chu Yu quickly scattered incense ash all over the floor, then held the small peach wood sword in her hand and nestled beside Chengzi, waiting for the rabbit to come.

At six in the afternoon, a rattling sound came from the doorway. The two held their breath, as if facing a formidable enemy.

With a creak, the door opened.

“Who told you to scatter incense ash here? This is a hospital!” The nurse, pushing a cart, stopped abruptly and then shouted in shock.

The two peered out from behind the bed curtain. Chengzi sniffled. “This is my sister worrying about my condition… praying for my blessing.”

The nurse stood rooted to the spot, nearly fainting. “You just had a fright and a nosebleed. What blessing are you praying for? If you want to perform rituals, do it at home. Why come to the hospital?”

Chu Yu rubbed her head, looking like an honest person. “I’m sorry, we’ll clean it up right now. We apologize for the trouble.”

Without the incense ash, she still had a peach wood sword in her hand, which might resist for a moment, Chu Yu thought.

Speaking of which, where was the peach wood sword? Chu Yu looked back and saw the small sword, bought from a street stall, under Chengzi’s foot. Before she could shout, Chengzi stepped on it.

The hilt and blade separated with a crisp snap. “What should I do? Did I do something bad?” Chengzi looked at the broken sword and then at Chu Yu in terror.

Chu Yu wanted to vomit blood, but couldn’t. She wiped the corner of her mouth and said flatly, “It’s fine.”

    Forget it, let fate decide.

It was already eleven o’clock after the injection. Chu Yu didn’t dare to sleep. She lay down fully clothed on the accompanying family bed. Chengzi huddled in the hospital bed, the railings raised high. She occasionally lifted the curtain to glance at Chu Yu.

Chu Yu wasn’t scared by Meizhi, but she was often startled by Chengzi.

She simply turned over, lying on her side, thinking about Li Heru’s reaction today. After Meizhi’s tongue was blasted into a bloody mist, Li Heru hadn’t said much.

What did Meizhi say before losing her tongue? The stronger the obsession… the greater the power?

Li Heru was very strong. How strong must her obsession be to possess such power? What was her obsession?

Thinking of this, she realized her understanding of Li Heru was almost zero.

In their first meeting, she was sometimes pitiful, sometimes prickly—a very lively person. But as they became familiar, Chu Yu found her nature very cold, a block of ice wrapped beneath layers of splendid silk.

She kept silent about everything concerning her past, but sometimes, the look in her eyes toward Chu Yu was incredibly affectionate, as if she were looking at someone else through Chu Yu.

The curtain behind her moved again. Chu Yu ignored it. A moment later, a cold hand touched her exposed waist.

A chill ran down Chu Yu’s spine. She said while getting up, “If you want to talk, talk. Don’t touch me.”

She met a pair of almond eyes streaming with two lines of bloody tears.

Chengzi was bound by Meizhi, her eyes tearful, on the verge of fainting. Meizhi’s free hand pressed onto Chu Yu’s waist, her sharp fingernails extending infinitely until the tips pierced the flesh. She smiled and greeted Chu Yu, “Hello there.”

“Li Heru!” Chu Yu shouted. The move didn’t work. Meizhi remained motionless and sneered, “You’re about to die and you’re still looking for her? You can shout until you die, she won’t appear today.”

“Alright, then I won’t shout,” Chu Yu said. Meizhi was stunned for a moment. The next second, Chu Yu rolled off the bed, disregarding the hideous wound slashed across her waist, and ran toward the door.

This act of betrayal baffled Meizhi. She looked down at Chengzi. “Did you two have a fight? Why isn’t she saving you?”

Chengzi couldn’t speak because half of Meizhi’s hand was stuffed in her mouth. As soon as Meizhi took her hand out, Chengzi immediately gagged a few times.

Meizhi instantly slapped her. “Does my hand stink?”

Chengzi choked out, “No, it doesn’t stink.” But it was disgusting. After all, it was the hand of a nearly century-old ghost.

Chu Yu rushed out the door, intending to look for a fire extinguisher or something that could serve as a weapon. Unfortunately, the cabinets were all locked.

In the hospital corridor late at night, a single light shone at the end of the pitch-black hallway. The nurse who had told them to sweep up the incense ash earlier was sitting there, typing on a computer. Chu Yu lightened her steps.

She didn’t want to cause a scene and be sent to a mental hospital.

She wandered around the corridor, unable to find a single handy weapon, but a creaking sound kept coming from behind her.

A hospital ghost story? Chu Yu held her breath, clenched her only fists, suddenly stopped, and turned back sharply, ready to strike whatever it was.

A hazy, manatee-shaped ghost was following her, holding some residual incense ash in its hands, tilting its head and looking at her.

Chu Yu moved her fist to the left, and its head turned to the left. She moved her fist to the right, and its head turned to the right.

Could it be… Chu Yu sniffed her palm. Sure enough, she smelled a strong scent of incense ash.

This was the scent she had picked up when she distributed incense ash to the ghosts in the corridor earlier. An idea formed in her mind.

Chu Yu rushed to the meal prep room. There were two large trash cans in the room, already filled with leftovers.

Ignoring the stench, Chu Yu frantically rummaged through the contents, digging all the way to the bottom. The bag of incense ash she had thrown away was finally found.

The big, fat ghost behind her cheered with its hands. Chu Yu stuffed a handful to it. “Go, go to the corridor.”

She turned to leave, meeting the wide-eyed face of the nurse.

Chu Yu stood amidst the scattered leftovers, clutching the bag of incense ash she had personally thrown away today as if it were a treasure. In the nurse’s eyes, she had just been talking to thin air.

Since things had come to this, Chu Yu pretended not to see her, gripped the garbage bag, and rushed out.

The nurse didn’t stop her, perhaps she forgot, or perhaps she didn’t dare.

Chu Yu ran, clutching the incense ash. The corridor instantly became hazy with gray dust. Ghosts all scurried out, surrounding her foolishly. Chu Yu held the incense ash high and sped toward Chengzi’s room.

A long line of ghosts gathered behind her, a temporary night parade of a hundred ghosts. By the time Chu Yu burst through the door, Chengzi’s face was already purple from being choked. Meizhi’s fingernails were plunged into her neck, and blood stained the hospital blanket.

Chu Yu acted decisively, tearing open the bag and throwing the contents onto Meizhi’s face. Meizhi was startled when the low-grade incense ash scattered over her, then realized there was no burning sensation like before. She laughed loudly, “You think anything can hurt me? You dead girl…”

Before she finished speaking, the big, fat ghost clinging to Chu Yu covered Meizhi like Mount Tai pressing down. It opened its mouth wide, licking the incense ash off Meizhi’s body. The ghosts behind, seeing someone had started eating, became impatient and rushed forward like hungry tigers pouncing on prey.

For a moment, the room was filled with the howling of ghosts. Some unrefined ghosts even made smacking sounds while eating. Chu Yu took advantage of the chaos and yanked Chengzi, who was pinned at the bottom. Chengzi gasped for air, and as the long-awaited air filled her lungs, tears streamed down her face.

“You really came to save me. I thought you ran away,” Chengzi said, wiping her tears. Chu Yu didn’t have time for small talk. She quickly gathered her things and pulled Chengzi out.

Meizhi was trapped in the pile of hungry ghosts. When else should they leave but now?

Both of them were stained with blood. Under the cover of night, they rushed out of the hospital. The cool night wind hit their faces, and Chu Yu finally slowed down.

Chengzi was still panting from running, continuing the previous conversation. “Actually, Sister Yu, even if you had run, I wouldn’t blame you. It was too scary.” When her great-grandmother was killed by Meizhi back then, everyone in the family avoided the situation. It was only natural for Chu Yu, a casual acquaintance, to run away.

    But she still came back…

Chu Yu waved her hand. “I calculated the time. Two or three minutes, she couldn’t choke you to death. This is a hospital; you could be saved.”

The tears Chengzi had been brewing immediately stopped. She thought hard and finally said loudly, “Okay.”

The key turned in the lock, and the door opened.

The house was empty. Li Heru’s cat paw urn sat quietly on the offering table. Although the house had only been empty for two days, it was filled with a sense of loneliness and desolation.

“Should we change shoes?” Chengzi asked. There was only one pair of slippers in the house, hers. Li Heru didn’t need them.

“No need,” Chu Yu said. She walked over and wiped the dust off the cat paw urn.

“You have a pet?” Chengzi walked over in surprise. Chu Yu didn’t know how to answer, so she just hummed in affirmation.

“My condolences,” Chengzi patted her shoulder in comfort.

She should offer condolences. After so long, this was the first time Li Heru had gone missing. If she was that strong, could someone still trap her?

There was a barrier between humans and ghosts. If Li Heru were at home, Chu Yu could call her on the landline, but she ran out. Where could one find her?

Chu Yu even considered buying a paper iPhone downstairs and burning it for her, though she wondered if the phone card needed to be a matching set.

With her mind racing, she leaned on the sofa and habitually opened Weibo. A trending topic jumped into her eyes.

[Hot – A horror film crew is filming on location in a haunted house, actors tragically attacked by ghosts!]

The accompanying picture showed Chengzi lying in a hospital bed, with her face cropped out.

The comments section was asking which crew it was, with a group of paid commenters replying below. Chu Yu put down her phone and called Director Zheng.
