Chapter 18 The Pipa Toad (VII)

“I have nothing to discuss with you. I don’t know the person you’re referring to.” Chu Yu looked at Director Zheng with eyes as calm as an ancient well.

“Playing dumb won’t benefit either of us. I just want to remind you not to conspire with a tiger.” Director Zheng smiled, raising the champagne glass in her hand toward Chu Yu. Chu Yu politely returned the gesture: “If I am conspiring with a tiger, Director Zheng, aren’t you?”

The two chatted and smiled, their glasses clinking. To an outsider, it looked like they were having a pleasant conversation, and no one dared to interrupt.

“Ming Wanli is alive, no matter what. But the one you’re with—I can’t tell if she’s a corpse, a zombie, or a rakshasa. Don’t end up losing your future and instead suffer the backlash of ten thousand ghosts, leaving not even a fragment of your soul behind.”

A cold smile played on Director Zheng’s lips. Chu Yu caught a crucial piece of information from her words. She frowned, “Backlash of ten thousand ghosts? What do you mean?”

A look of scrutiny appeared in Director Zheng’s eyes. She leaned forward with interest, her face magnified several times in the close distance.

Just then, a waiter brought champagne. Chu Yu took a glass, putting a physical barrier between them.

“She hasn’t told you?” Seeing Chu Yu remain silent, she chuckled lightly: “No wonder. I suppose it’s not something easy to talk about, especially since she seems to like you so much. How could she bear to ruin her image in your eyes?”

Having said her piece, Director Zheng put down her glass and smiled at her: “I hope you still have my number. Go back, find out the truth, and if you regret it, come find me. I’ll help you get rid of her.”

Late at night, Chu Yu sat alone in the living room. The bright white light from the browsing page shone on her face. Her eyes were dry and strained.

After browsing the tenth page of content with no results, she let out a long sigh and leaned back against the sofa.

Perhaps due to the internet cleanup campaign, all supernatural content had been thoroughly deleted from the web. Chu Yu was unwilling to give up and repeatedly changed her keywords, switching from ‘ghost eater’ to ‘person who eats ghosts,’ and then to ‘ghost weaknesses’ and ‘how ghosts suffer backlash.’

This time, several results popped up, written in vivid detail. Chu Yu scrolled the mouse wheel, reading intently.

-I once met a ghost eater. That person was as thin as a bamboo pole but incredibly brave, daring to trespass into any ghost lair. Until one day, she told me her secret…

What is this? It’s somewhat relevant. Chu Yu lowered her eyebrows and scrolled down.

Tsk. She lightly tapped the mouse. The resulting thud sounded loud in the dead of night.

Chu Yu immediately looked nervously toward the bedroom door. Fortunately, the door was closed, and Li Heru was already asleep.

A false alarm. She continued searching for a needle in the haystack of the internet. After clicking ‘not interested’ on several novel advertisements, a post from a forum suddenly jumped out.

The update year was over ten years ago. [My dead girlfriend suddenly came back, but she seems like a different person. What should I do?]

[Illusionist] – At first, the OP was very happy, but recently suddenly discovered that his girlfriend is completely different between day and night. Her emotions fluctuate wildly, and she often talks to herself, saying terrifying things.

[8692StewedCatSoup] – Sounds so mysterious… Pulling up a small stool to sit and watch.

[BookFamineAhhh] – Feels like a great read, squatting here.

[Illusionist] – I’m not writing a novel, this is real. Sometimes she stares at me intensely in the middle of the night, and I don’t dare to sleep all night. The next day, she speaks to me gently. In public, she will suddenly insult me, but no one else can see her; only I can hear her curses.

Repeating this cycle is truly driving me to a mental breakdown. I’ve taken sleeping pills several times recently.

[SanSanYa] – ? Why do I feel like the OP has mental health issues…

[BookFamineAhhh] – Forced love between a mental patient and a female ghost? Sounds even tastier, boohoo.

Seeing this, Chu Yu’s heart skipped a beat. She felt personally referenced through the screen, but Li Heru wasn’t as perverse as the OP described—at least not overtly…

She composed herself and shifted her gaze back to the screen.

[Illusionist] – But recently, I found relevant information and discovered a truth about her that is even more terrifying than I imagined… Do you know about ghost eaters? It is said that such people harbor multiple souls in their bodies, and souls often fight to seize control of the body. And my girlfriend, she is a ghost that eats ghosts.

[SanSanYa] – Is this really not a novel writer trying to drive traffic? Reported.

[BookFamineAhhh] – Will you ever stop, upstairs? If you don’t want to read it, plenty of others do. OP, ignore her and keep writing.

[Illusionist] – I swear everything I say is true, may she bite me to death if I lie. Ghosts don’t have a physical body, so a ghost that eats ghosts can only hide the consumed souls in its belly. Once its power weakens, it will be eaten by the ghosts inside…

[Illusionist] – So those strange moments when my girlfriend is hot and cold are not souls fighting for the body, nor am I schizophrenic. It’s that she has already been half-eaten. The one talking to me is not her at all…

Reading up to this point, Chu Yu suddenly felt how dim the old ceiling light in the living room was—so dim that the moment her gaze left the computer, she felt plunged into endless darkness.

She rubbed her eyes, leaned her neck back, and was halfway through stretching when she met a pair of pitch-black eyes devoid of any light.

Chu Yu’s outstretched arms froze in mid-air. Just then, the living room window creaked open, blown by the wind.

She calmly lowered her arms and stood up, walking toward the window. Before leaving, she explained, “I’m going to close the window.”

As her left foot took half a step, a cold leg slotted between her two legs. Chu Yu was wearing shorts as loungewear, and the chill crawled up her exposed skin like ants. She took a deep breath, grinding the shiver between her teeth.

“What is it?” She tilted her chin up slightly, staring into Li Heru’s abyss-like pupils. This was the first time she had clearly seen Li Heru’s eyes under the light: slightly dilated pupils, light chestnut irises, and bluish whites.

Like a cat in the night, radiating a chilling glow.

“I told you to look up information, so why are you only looking at this marginal stuff? How bad would it be if you misunderstood me?” Li Heru smiled faintly, staring intently at her.

Her tone was not friendly, and neither were her actions. Li Heru’s seemingly slender white hand gripped Chu Yu’s back, exerting immense force. Chu Yu swallowed.

Chu Yu took a step forward, closing the distance between them, so close that she could feel the dead silence emanating from the chest opposite her.

“Then why has your temperament changed so drastically now? Could it be that the real Li Heru has also been eaten?” Chu Yu tilted her head slightly, feigning innocence.

“Yes, she was eaten,” Li Heru said, looking slightly downward. Chu Yu pursed her lips, then saw the ghost’s eyes flash.

For a moment, she found it amusing and almost laughed, but she kept her face straight.

Feeling playful, she couldn’t resist teasing her. Chu Yu took another step forward, leaning in for a fleeting kiss near her lips, stopping just millimeters away, close enough to smell the scent on Li Heru’s breath.

A faint smell of incense, the smell of skin, and what else? She closed her eyes slightly, trying to smell more, but realized the person in front of her was motionless, like a statue.

Chu Yu raised her eyelids to look at her. She didn’t meet the expected look of panic, but rather a pair of eyelashes fluttering like wings in the wind. Li Heru had closed her eyes, waiting for the kiss that never landed.

In an instant, a scene from a movie she had watched long ago flashed through Chu Yu’s mind. The movie plot was cliché and long forgotten, but one line of dialogue remained clear.

“When lovers kiss, the one who loves more closes their eyes first.”

It was a cliché that made her feel a chill. She hesitated for a moment, then took a step back. Almost simultaneously with her retreat, Li Heru angrily opened her eyes.

“Slap!” The sound of the slap was crisp. The person who delivered it used considerable force, and the recipient staggered back two steps.

Chu Yu didn’t have time to cover her face. She raised her shocked face, looking at the hand still held high. Finally reacting, she relied on the foundation built from skipping classes for parkour in middle school, bracing herself with one hand on the back of the sofa, leaping over it, and then using the momentum to squat down, narrowly escaping the next blow.

Chu Yu sat on the cold floor tiles, leaning against the sofa. The slap mark on her face stung fiercely. Before she could process the pain, the sofa exploded.

    In a literal, physical sense.

Wood chips, fabric strips, and stuffing cotton flew across the room like a scene from World War III. Chu Yu lost her support and balance, her head slamming hard against the floor. The pain made her clutch her head with one hand and brace herself on the floor with the other.

A massive spring bounced with a Duang sound right next to Chu Yu’s hand. If it had landed half an inch closer, her fingers would have been firmly embedded in the floor. From then on, this old, dilapidated apartment would join the ranks of haunted houses, its price halved again, making it impossible for her to recover even the cost if she sold it secondhand.

Chu Yu stiffly retracted her index and middle fingers. Clutching her throbbing head, she stood up. Li Heru’s fingers were slightly curled, the anger on her face clearly not yet vented.

For a moment, neither of them knew what to say. After a long stare, Chu Yu’s head throbbed violently. Feeling overwhelmed, she plopped down onto the floor. A few fabric scraps floated up and gently settled on the ground.

Li Heru stood backlit, arms crossed. Her tall figure completely enveloped Chu Yu, her expression hidden in the darkness and hard to discern.

Chu Yu’s heart pounded fiercely. A hand reached out toward her. She instinctively squeezed her eyes shut, the stinging slap mark still hot on her face, and raised her hand to block.

However, the hand merely brushed the hair near her forehead. When she opened her eyes again, Li Heru was holding a piece of fabric scrap. She smiled contemptuously, then tossed the scrap aside.

Without offering an explanation or even looking at Chu Yu, Li Heru entered the room. The door slammed shut with a bang, making the Aspidistra near the entrance wobble twice.

Chu Yu remained sitting there for a long time, until the coldness began to creep in, making her feel as if she was merging with the floor tiles. Only then did she use the table to help herself stand up.

This matter, no matter how she looked at it, was her fault. Why did she have to tease her? Was she possessed? Chu Yu touched her lips. They were soft and quite elastic.

She thought of Li Heru’s lips, which had been inches away—they looked very soft and very kissable, though perhaps cold. Chu Yu was startled by the sudden, chaotic images popping into her head.

She jumped up in a jolt. To stop herself from thinking further, she ran to the bathroom, grabbed a broom and dustpan, and started cleaning up the mess.

She had never kissed anyone, yet that impulse, those secretive and confusing images, lingered in her mind. It was as if she had truly done it before, had kissed Li Heru.

Chu Yu gripped the broom, her face slowly turning pale.
