Chapter 13 The Surinam Toad (II)

Chu Yu broke out in goosebumps. She didn’t hesitate to hurl the radio straight at the woman’s face.

Chu Yu broke out in goosebumps. She didn’t hesitate to hurl the radio straight at the woman’s face. Startled, the woman immediately crouched down and leaped out with powerful legs, vanishing into the darkness in an instant.

The croaking stopped. The surroundings were silent, as if vacuum-sealed. The two looked at each other. Li Heru looked at the spot where the woman had been standing; a puddle of dark red, viscous fluid remained there.

Chu Yu picked up a branch and poked the fluid. Unexpectedly, the fluid seemed to have a life of its own, rapidly climbing up the branch. Chu Yu threw the branch away, but the moment she tossed it, a few drops of the fluid splashed onto the back of her hand, causing a sharp sting.

“Are you okay?” Li Heru lifted her hand and examined it closely. The back of her hand was slightly red, but no other abnormalities were visible yet.

“I’m fine.” Chu Yu took a bottle of water from her pocket and rinsed the area. The cool water alleviated the pain, but a growing sense of foreboding rose in her heart.

“Forget it. Let’s go back today. We’ll gather more information and come back another time,” Chu Yu whispered.

The next day, inside a hospital, Chu Yu walked down the corridor with a bouquet of flowers, looking composed. She had asked Xu Yue to contact the person in charge of the film crew. She was visiting the hospital to check on the injured staff and inquire about the situation.

Several sick spirits walked past her, smiling foolishly at Chu Yu. She turned her head and entered a VIP ward.

Lying in this ward was a robust woman, the crew’s props master. Because she was physically strong and had been the farthest from the pool where the incident occurred, she had escaped the worst of it.

Even so, after removing the gauze, her firm upper arm was already festering and bloody. Chu Yu inhaled almost imperceptibly.

“Could you describe the situation when the incident happened?” Chu Yu sat down beside her.

That day, they had a scene to shoot in the amphibian exhibit hall. Because the water in the pool was too dirty, and they were concerned about the actors’ health, the logistics and props teams were sent to empty the pool and replace the water. While cleaning, they discovered there were still live toads in the water.

No one paid much attention; the aquarium was abandoned, after all, so who cared if there were living creatures inside? However, when the water was half-drained, things took a turn.

Bubbles suddenly erupted in the murky green water. It seemed a large fish was swimming beneath the surface. This discovery startled everyone. Then, someone from the logistics department, a seasoned fishing enthusiast, saw the large fish and jumped into the pool without hesitation.

As soon as she entered the water, something wrapped around her foot. After a few cries for help, she began sinking toward the deeper section. The two people closest to her jumped in to rescue her. Because they were wearing rubber waterproof pants, movement underwater was difficult. Before they could reach the fishing enthusiast, the pool exploded.

It exploded in the literal sense. Decades of accumulated feces, rotting corpses, and algae mixed with the water, blasting over half the hall. No one in the vicinity was spared.

Fortunately, most people were busy on the other side at the time. This disaster ultimately only befell six people.

“I feel fine. I don’t understand why everyone is making such a big deal out of it,” the props master shrugged. “Maybe it was just a bacterial infection caused by marsh gas exploding at the bottom of the pool. There’s no such thing as supernatural phenomena,” she said.

“Her condition is the lightest. We also followed the doctor’s orders and haven’t told her about the others, so…” The person in charge, standing outside the door, trailed off.

“Can I get an update on the others?” Chu Yu asked. The person in charge immediately nodded and led her upstairs.

“The person in the most critical condition is already in the intensive care unit. Of the remaining few, one has severe psychological issues, and two are in fair condition but refuse to see anyone,” the person in charge explained as they walked.

“So, where are we going?” Chu Yu stepped out of the elevator, facing a deep, cold corridor. Heavy curtains covered the windows on both sides. Other than the words “Emergency Exit” glowing green on the floor, there were no other signs.

The person in charge walked to a window, gently pulled back the curtain, and motioned for Chu Yu to look.

Inside the glass window was a pure white, cramped space containing a hospital bed, a bedpan, and a meal tray stand—nothing else.

A woman was lying prone on the bed. Her face was obscured. Perhaps she had just applied medicine, as she had removed her top, revealing her entire back.

Chu Yu’s heart skipped a beat. Not for any other reason, but her back was strikingly similar to the woman Chu Yu had seen in the aquarium yesterday!

Honeycomb-like pores opened and closed on her back, spitting out dark red mucus. They resembled tiny frog mouths, only without the disgusting lumps of flesh, and the holes were slightly smaller and denser, like a lotus pod with the seeds scooped out.

The hand that Chu Yu had touched with the mucus yesterday throbbed slightly.

The person in charge closed the curtain.

“The doctors have never seen a case like this either. There’s no suitable medicine, so they have to try one after another. It’s a long, painful process,” she sighed.

She then cast a hopeful gaze upon Chu Yu. “I heard from Teacher Xu Yue that you have deep knowledge of metaphysics. If not for that, I wouldn’t have brought you to see this. Have you discerned anything?”

Chu Yu wiped her forehead, silently cursing Xu Yue. She had thought Xu Yue’s connections were extensive, but it turned out she had gotten in by relying on trickery and deception.

“Well, I need to go back and plan carefully. The implications are very deep, and it’s inconvenient to disclose them right now,” Chu Yu said seriously.

The person in charge replied with trepidation, “I understand, I understand. Then, thank you for your trouble. Please notify us immediately if there are any new developments.”

“Naturally,” Chu Yu waved her hand.

Only when the person in charge was out of sight did Chu Yu duck into the stairwell. Using the light, she carefully unwrapped the wrist guard on the back of her hand. Sure enough, the skin underneath was already festering, and a few small holes were faintly visible.

“Such strong resentment… If you don’t treat this hand quickly, it will end up like that.” Li Heru frowned after hearing about Chu Yu’s hospital visit today.

She gently stroked the back of Chu Yu’s hand. Although the action was well-intentioned, she kept muttering, “That’s so disgusting… I’m going to throw up… Tsk tsk…”

Chu Yu couldn’t bear it and pulled her hand back, changing the gauze. “Is this the ghost’s method of attack? Like your blood mist?” she asked while wrapping the bandage.

Chu Yu was gradually discovering the pattern of ghost attacks. For example, Meizhi died by hanging, so she mainly attacked with her neck and teeth. Li Heru… could turn people into blood mist. This ghost relied on transmitting skin disease, perhaps having died from a debilitating illness herself.

“That’s right. It seems her death was also quite tragic. However, I lean toward the infant spirits on her back being the target we need to deal with; she is just the host.” Li Heru clicked her tongue, stood up, went into the bathroom, turned the faucet on full blast, and didn’t emerge until she had rinsed for ten minutes.

“Why would she be possessed by infant spirits?” Chu Yu asked after she came out. “There are many reasons. Most commonly, it’s due to abortions causing the fetus to harbor resentment, or babies being abandoned after birth, or killed by their birth mothers, and so on,” Li Heru shrugged.

“Then my hand will turn out like hers, won’t it?” Chu Yu examined the gauze, her heart sinking.

“If you turn out like that, you should quickly amputate it. I’d rather you didn’t have a hand,” Li Heru sighed.

That afternoon, at the abandoned aquarium.

“What are you looking at?” Li Heru called out to Chu Yu from the main hall. Today, she was bundled up tightly, not a single gap showing on her body, and she was wearing high-top rain boots.

Chu Yu was examining a missing person notice near the entrance. The woman in the picture looked very familiar. A few lines of printed text were stacked beside it.

(Our beloved daughter Huang Lin, went missing on year * month * day, age 22. On the day of her disappearance, she was wearing a denim jacket, a maroon sweater underneath, and off-white pants. Anyone with information, please call the family at . A substantial reward is offered!)

Chu Yu smoothed out the weather-beaten notice. Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck her.

She tore it down and quickly walked toward the main hall.

In the corridor connecting the amphibian hall to the children’s playground.

Li Heru stood with her arms crossed, frowning. “This is your new discovery?” Chu Yu pressed the missing person notice next to a framed photo. The woman’s bright smile in the photo was identical to the one on the notice.

“A missing animal trainer. Her family came to post a missing person notice at the entrance of her workplace to find her,” Chu Yu said.

“This is an aquarium. How could they allow a missing person notice to be posted at the main entrance? It would affect customer traffic,” Li Heru countered.

Chu Yu smiled and pulled out her phone. “The internet says the aquarium closed down ten years ago, and this missing person notice is five years old.”

“So, Huang Lin’s family came to post a notice at the closed-down aquarium where their daughter used to work?” Li Heru blinked.

“That’s why I suspect that woman might be her,” Chu Yu said, holding up the notice.

Why would someone look for a person in a place that has already closed down? Of course, because that person had appeared there before. The two understood immediately and walked toward the children’s playground where the woman had appeared.

As long as a person has lived, they inevitably leave traces, and by following these faint traces, one can piece together their life.

“Huang Lin! Huang Lin!” A boot stepped into a puddle, startling a few small frogs. Chu Yu’s voice echoed in the empty room. Li Heru slapped her arm. “Keep it down. Aren’t you afraid she’ll attack you again?”

Li Heru, who was almost immune to ghost attacks, was thoroughly covered, while Chu Yu was casually dressed in cargo pants, with the hem of her black t-shirt tucked in, exposing both arms.

“I won’t die.” Chu Yu waved her flashlight like a cheering stick, looking determined to dig up the ghost today if necessary. Before leaving, she had lifted the gauze and seen that the small holes had not continued to grow; instead, they had shrunk slightly.

Perhaps her boundless merit prevented the resentful ghost’s malevolent energy from touching her in the slightest, Chu Yu thought confidently.

She held a bamboo pole in her other hand, loudly tapping the bar counter and the pool. Toads leaped out of the pool, crawling all over the floor, startling Li Heru, who jumped to avoid them.

“Are you crazy? Stop hitting things.” She pushed Chu Yu. Just as Chu Yu was poking the pole toward the water’s surface, she lost her balance, slipped, and plunged headfirst into the pool.

The pool water was icy cold, and the smell of years of decay filled her nostrils. She parted the water with her hands, keeping her mouth tightly shut. The beam of her flashlight cut through the ripples in the pool, with strands of green algae swirling in the light. She struggled to open her eyes, only to see a sight that would be unforgettable for the rest of her life.
