Chapter 14: Another Crisis, Finding Alan, Baby
All children voice their innermost thoughts, hoping someone will hear and fulfill their desires.
But Pulan is different; she’s like a wild grass born against the wind, fragile yet tenacious, unyielding, and ever-growing.
The girl, backlit, closed her eyes and piously clasped her hands together.
Shedding her mature gaze, she’s just a child, forced to go against the current in an age when she should be carefree.
At that moment, living or growing, which one is truly her heart’s desire?
“What is your wish, Pulan?” Thinking this, he asked it aloud.
Pulan opened her eyes, “To thank God.”
Song Ningwan was stunned, “Why?” So this child is a theist.
“Thank you.”
Pulan said softly. Song Ningwan reacted, smiled, and didn’t dwell on it.
After playing, making noise, laughing, and eating and drinking to their fill, it was time to get down to business.
The items in those cardboard boxes remained unopened for now.
Song Ningwan first divided the children into four groups, ten people per team.
He chose team leaders, with Pulan as the overall leader, free to move anyone around.
For the first time, he took Pulan out first. Pumi originally wanted to follow, but under her sister’s silent urging, she didn’t speak.
The Upper Trash District Legion garrisoned the border; this was Song Ningwan’s first time entering the district.
In terms of technology, the Upper and Lower Trash Districts were evenly matched, with the war even spurring rapid scientific advancements.
However, Upper Trash District, due to its severe stratification of levels and vast wealth gap, experienced top-heavy development.
For example, the road beneath Song Ningwan’s feet at that moment led to the impoverished people’s residences.
The residential buildings were stacked layer upon layer, piled together, with alleys only wide enough for slender children to pass through.
“Do you know what’s most important for a mechanical engineer?”
The two walked one after the other. Pulan shook her head upon hearing this, “Sir, I don’t understand what a mechanical engineer should do.”
“Mechs, trains, airships, and other mobile machines can bring endless convenience to humanity; those are all made by mechanical engineers. People with different personalities and experiences will add some clever ideas when choosing a design. For example, my student Ka’lier, he likes to design weapons, guns and blades, and then add his own aesthetic style, creating a new path. And the stronger the mechanical engineer’s connect spirit, the greater the transformability and functional effectiveness of the machine.” Song Ningwan slowed his pace, gently guiding, “Now, sense your surroundings, what is the first thing that comes to your mind?”
Pulan stopped and obediently observed her surroundings.
The impoverished people’s residences were not as dirty and chaotic as the Lower Trash District streets, and the noise pollution index was not excessive. Here, apart from the crowded buildings on the land, it was silent.
The underground was silent, unable to feel a trace of airflow, let alone wind.
“If a shooting star could grant a wish, I would hope to see sunlight.” Pulan looked at the tall figure in front of her. She lowered her head and glanced at herself, unable to help but quicken her pace.
A subtle sound from behind, she didn’t know what she saw in her peripheral vision, she took a step forward and pushed Song Ningwan away, “Get out of the way!”
Dust was blasted open by the artillery fire, hazy and turbid. The enormous force impacted her body, and her internal organs shook in her chest cavity. Song Ningwan’s throat surged with crimson, and he subconsciously hugged Pulan and lunged forward!
Boom—
A roaring sound continued in her ears, and she couldn’t hear anything for a moment.
“Sir! Blood, so much blood…”
Faintly hearing sobs, Song Ningwan’s pupils were dilated, his eyelids unable to support him, and he was about to fall into slumber.
“The temporary residence period is two days; you have violated the time limit and are therefore being expelled from Upper Trash District. We are merely taking corresponding measures.”
Song Ningwan’s arms were being lifted by someone, and because his feet couldn’t exert any strength, he was forcibly dragged forward.
“We know Commander Yuri! The sir is from the legion; you can ask!” Pulan was small, and the corner of his clothes that she had just grabbed slipped from her hand. She stumbled and reached out, but was blocked by a mighty body.
The other party didn’t plan to back down, “Even if you’re from the legion, you still have to abide by the rules.”
Watching Song Ningwan being dragged away, Pulan suppressed her fear and touched the person in front of her, as immovable as a high mountain, “Can I speak with Officer Yuri? Please, after all, the sir is a very important guest of the officer. If something happens, you will be held accountable.”
Not allowed to chase after Song Ningwan, Pulan became anxious and chose to return to the factory first to seek help from the legion.
The road back was unusually rugged and uneven, and her heart rose and fell violently like a roller coaster, suddenly soaring into the sky, reaching a critical point, and then plummeting into the abyss.
Pulan followed the route in her memory back, first passing through desolate streets, with the doors of the surrounding houses tightly closed.
But there were always inexplicable gazes staring at her in the dark, like looking at a leopard through a tube.
Clearly there was no one, who was looking at her?
As the sense of unease grew stronger, Pulan quickened her pace until she was about to walk out of the impoverished people’s residential area when she suddenly turned her head, and the gaze that felt like needles on her back suddenly disappeared.
Strange.
The moment Pulan turned her head, her eyes fell into hopeless darkness. She reached out and struggled, but to no avail, chose to stop resisting, pretended to be unconscious, and didn’t speak. She allowed the other party to manipulate her, avoiding angering the bad guys and being beaten and kicked.
She realized that she was being stuffed into an iron box, with a clang, the echo rippling.
The border road of the Upper Trash District was rugged. Pulan felt the box moving, as if some kind of running instrument was carrying her.
Where she was going was still unknown.
After an unknown amount of time, the road became smoother and smoother, which was not the road to the border.
Pulan opened her eyes and found that reality was the same as she had expected; she was being transported in an iron box.
Apart from the deathmatch arena controlled by the legion, she knew nothing about the Upper Trash District, but Song Ningwan had rescued her from her initial predicament, so what about the second time? She couldn’t always live under the protection of others, unable to grow.
A violent impact struck her forehead, and tears welled up in her eyes, but she didn’t say a word.
It turned out to be an emergency stop. Pulan quickly closed her eyes, bent her head, and maintained a sleeping posture.
“This batch is too weak; I’m afraid we’ll kill them. Tell the ones inside to go easy on them; after all, if the deathmatch arena hadn’t taken so many kids, why would we bother grabbing them off the streets?” A rough male voice complained.
It was a woman’s voice, low and alluring, “The deathmatch arena… Yuri? We’ve always kept to ourselves; it’s best not to provoke the legion. We still need this partner to cooperate with mining.”
“By the way, have you seen that viral video? Someone put the deathmatch online, and the number of reposts has exceeded one million.”
The rough voice didn’t answer, seeming to find it surprising.
The woman laughed briefly and quickly, “It seems to be called S; the account has now been canceled. It’s possible that it’s already been…”
She stopped speaking halfway, naturally falling silent.
“What’s so interesting about that? That kind of person is already dead.”
“Of course it’s interesting; Yuri released that batch of children, I don’t know why.” The woman’s voice came to an abrupt halt, and no sound came from her again.
When Pulan put her ear to the iron skin, she heard a few scattered words intermittently entering her ears.
“Ground, mine…”
That was most likely it; it was also possible that she had misheard.
A long creaking sound reverberated in her ears. There was a snap above her head, and the iron box was opened.
Her back collar was lifted, startling Pulan so much that she almost couldn’t breathe. She turned ashen and didn’t dare make a sound.
“Ugh!” Her suspended body suddenly flew out. Pulan instinctively opened her eyes and found herself thrown into a broken cage.
There were people of all ages.
About to touch the ground, she potentially faced the risk of a fracture.
Pulan immediately responded in the air, quickly protecting her forehead.
The expected pain didn’t strike; instead, she landed in a warm embrace.
Someone had caught her.
“How are you, child?” Pulan opened her eyes, and an infinitely magnified face appeared before her eyes.
She immediately broke free from the embrace, vigilantly looking around the iron cage environment and guarding against strangers.
“Don’t think about escaping, because you’ll never know what you’re facing. Also, never fantasize about suicide, or all of your blood relatives will be confiscated; this is the rule of the Underground City! Welcome to a bright future!”
After saying that, the iron cage was closed. The cage was close to the wall, basically seamlessly connected.
However, the space inside the cage was huge, with eighteen people locked up in fragments.
Most of them were young men and women, with only four or five children secretly hiding.
The one who had caught her just now was a sallow, emaciated woman who was older but seemed kind.
“What did everyone come in for?” Hearing the emaciated woman ask, the crowd carefully discussed.
Pulan hadn’t figured out the situation yet and remained silent, hiding in the corner.
She had had good hearing since she was a child. She had originally thought that detecting any disturbance would save Song Ningwan, but instead, she had been protected in the man’s arms and had only suffered some minor injuries.
Guilt was a sign of weakness and incompetence. Pulan didn’t back down; she pretended to be scared, squatted in the corner, hugged her knees, and reduced her presence.
Everyone had been locked up here in different ways; some had come voluntarily because of high salaries, and some had dared not commit suicide due to livelihood issues and had come here to seek death.
There were none who had been abducted.
Strange.
Could this really be some legal and compliant workplace? That was not necessarily the case.
Because Pulan smelled a fishy stench that filled the entire room, impossible to escape.
She scanned around and found that under the dim light, there were not only people standing.
“Ugh… Daddy,”
“It’s you again! Can you stop crying? It’s so annoying! Now that you’re here, don’t think about going out; will you die without a dad?”
“You’re still not obedient after being beaten yesterday; you wake up and just cry. How do you want me to be your dad?!”
The harsh mockery and scolding made the child cry uncontrollably. The crying was very soft, sounding obedient.
“Wuwuwu, Daddy doesn’t want baby… wants Daddy, Grandpa…”
“Cry again and I’ll kill you!” The scar-faced man was fierce and vicious, punching the iron cage.
“Sir, he’s still young; please don’t be impulsive.” The crying, emaciated woman squatted down and held the crying child in her arms, coaxing softly, “Good baby, don’t cry, okay? Daddy will definitely find you.”
The child was soothed by the gentle tone and stopped crying, “Daddy…”
“You woman are being a busybody?! What does it matter to you whether this kid dies or not? You wouldn’t happen to be his dad…” The scar-faced man didn’t finish speaking, replaced by the child’s even more miserable crying.
“Mommy left baby… Wuwuwu”
Pulan was unintentionally caught up in the dispute. She wasn’t sure what Song Ningwan’s situation was now, but since he knew Officer Yuri, he should be fine.
When she inadvertently raised her eyes and glanced, her whole body became hot, and her pupils dilated!
