Chapter Index

The air was cold, like the reddened fingertips of a master craftsman frozen mid-sculpt. Wei Lin retracted his hands and rubbed them together inside the fluffy fox fur cloak to generate warmth, failing to notice Duan Xi’s right hand that had extended and then stiffened mid-air.

The latter nonchalantly adjusted Wei Lin’s slightly messy collar, offering a casual reminder: “If you’re afraid of the cold, don’t stick your hands out.”

Wei Lin’s eyes flickered slightly, and he gave a faint hum in response.

The vegetation on the mountaintop was sparse. Moonlight filtered through the dry tree branches, casting mottled shadows on the white snow.

Duan Xi and Wei Lin stood side by side, yet Duan Xi felt a great distance between them. He looked at Wei Lin’s exquisite and perfect profile, momentarily unable to find anything to talk about.

The brilliant galaxy continued to flicker, seemingly tireless.

    “Ooo—”

A series of long, ethereal cries echoed through the heavens and earth, simultaneously drawing the attention of both Wei Lin and Duan Xi.

Looking down from the mountaintop, countless whales leaped from the sea surface, creating shimmering ripples that reflected silver light under the moon.

Wei Lin was moved. These creatures were truly beautiful. He had always been fond of animals, whether they flew in the sky or lived on land and in the sea.

In his previous life, he had visited aquariums, but he had usually only seen creatures like whales from afar, never having close contact with them.

Duan Xi noticed the anticipation in his eyes and found a topic: “Would you like to ride and keep a whale?”

Wei Lin glanced sideways at Duan Xi. He was very tempted by the suggestion, but such unrestrained creatures belonged only to the ocean; they should not be confined to a shallow pool.

He shook his head and said, “Forget it, I’m not interested.”

He didn’t realize how disappointed his expression was when he said this, his golden pupils dimming.

Duan Xi had been observing his change in expression and vaguely guessed what he was disappointed about. Perhaps it was because he was already a bird in a cage, and he didn’t want these lovely creatures to suffer the same fate.

The two did not dwell on the topic. With the change in their mood, even the most magnificent scenery before them lost its color.

Wei Lin tightened his cloak, lowered his gaze, and said, “Let’s go.”

Duan Xi tilted his head slightly. “Not watching anymore?”

    “Not watching.”

Duan Xi respected his decision. When Wei Lin said he was done watching, Duan Xi truly took him back to the beach of Whale Fall Island.

Duan Xi did not intend for Wei Lin to spend the night there, as he still needed to take his medicinal bath in the evening.

The courtyard was shrunk back to its original palm size, and the flying boat carried the two back to Heaven Gate.

After the previous incident where Duan Xi had dragged him bungee jumping, Wei Lin was wary of him this time. He stood several meters away, gazing intently at the aurora in the night sky.

West Sea was far from Heaven Gate, but the flying boat was fast, reaching the gates of Heaven Gate in just two hours.

It was already midnight, a time when all sounds were hushed, and most disciples were secluded in cultivation.

They did not disturb anyone. The flying boat landed directly in front of the small courtyard where Wei Lin lived.

The two walked into the small courtyard one after the other. When they reached the door of the reception hall, Wei Lin turned back to look at Duan Xi, who was about to step inside, and said, “Sect Master Duan should go back and rest.”

The intention to dismiss him was completely undisguised.

Duan Xi had one foot outside and one foot inside the door frame. He asked amusedly, “Your husband took time out of his busy schedule to accompany his wife for a day, and his wife won’t even offer a cup of tea before rushing me off. How heartless.”

    Wei Lin: “…”

“I need to take a medicinal bath. Does Sect Master Duan want to come in and watch?”

Duan Xi heard this, restrained the playful look on his face, and actually rubbed his chin, thinking seriously for a moment. Then he cheerfully said, “If my wife doesn’t mind, it’s not impossible.”

    Wei Lin: “…”

Duan Xi once again lowered the bar for Wei Lin’s impression of his shamelessness. He took a deep breath, telling himself not to get angry with the male lead; he couldn’t win.

He gave a cold look at Duan Xi’s long leg inside the door frame, raised his foot, and stomped down.

Duan Xi reacted extremely quickly, pulling his leg back before Wei Lin’s foot landed. Then came the sound of a heavy slam as Wei Lin closed the door, giving him the cold shoulder.

It was the first time he had seen Wei Lin throw a tantrum. Instead of feeling annoyed, he found this side of Wei Lin quite endearing.

Duan Xi shook his head and chuckled, gazing deeply at the tightly shut courtyard door before turning and leaving.

Inside the house, Wei Lin listened intently to the sounds outside. When he heard Duan Xi’s retreating footsteps, he quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

He had always felt that Duan Xi, the male lead, was difficult to deal with—deeply thoughtful and eccentric, making it impossible to guess his true intentions.

Wei Lin was a very lazy person and disliked constantly trying to figure out what others were thinking; living like that was too exhausting. Yet, reality forced him to be this tired.

He stared up at the red beam on the ceiling, raised his hand across his eyes, and let out a long, turbid breath.

After a moment of contemplation, he walked back into the room. He took off the heavy fox fur cloak he was wearing and had just hung it on the wooden clothes rack when he heard a knock on the courtyard door.

“Madam, the medicinal bath is ready. Please proceed to the bathing room.”

Wei Lin softly hummed, “I know, you may leave.”

The person outside received the confirmation and silently departed.

Wei Lin stripped off all his heavy clothes, leaving only his inner garment and trousers. Barefoot, he walked from the back door of the reception hall to the bathing room.

In the bathing room, steam rose from the two-meter-long tub. A strong medicinal scent instantly enveloped his nasal cavity, and the feeling of nausea and revulsion surged up again.

Wei Lin covered his nose, took off his remaining clothes, and, enduring the disgust, stepped into the water.

The water was slightly hot but not unbearable. Wei Lin submerged himself completely in the water up to his neck, strands of black hair floating and spreading out in the water.

The medicinal bath began to take effect. Wei Lin closed his eyes for a short rest. Just as he was drifting off to sleep, he suddenly felt a tingling, stinging sensation on his waist. He instinctively reached out to touch it, but felt hard, cold scales.

    Scales?

He abruptly opened his eyes and stood up, staring at the stinging spot. Sure enough, a patch of silver-white scales had grown on his waist.

Wei Lin was stunned. The original host was clearly human, so how could he grow scales?

He reached out and touched it again. The silver-white scales emitted a faint cold light, and then suddenly vanished. The skin there was still fair and smooth, as if the scales had been a hallucination.

He knew it was definitely not a hallucination. His fingertip had almost been cut by the edge of the scale just now, and the cold sensation was very real.

Only demons or half-demons could have scales. He frowned and carefully recalled the descriptions of the original host in the novel. The original host was indeed a pure human cultivator, without a trace of demon bloodline.

The longer he stayed in this world, the more mysteries he uncovered about the original host.

He pressed his hand to his forehead, feeling a headache. The original host was truly good at digging pits for him.
