Chapter 9 Wen Xiuyun is back and waiting for him.

“Senior, don’t tease me.” Pei Yisheng’s eyes fluttered. “You are clearly much prettier, Senior.”

Meng Zihua had been involved in cosplay since elementary school. Her family was wealthy, and she had a genuine interest in the hobby. She formed her own club in middle school, and by university, with more management experience and disposable funds, Meng Zihua registered a professional studio.

After several years of operation, while not everyone online was her fan, at least half of the community liked the cosplayers from her studio. Her offer to bring Pei Yisheng in for work was genuine.

Meng Zihua laughed heartily. “We are pretty in different ways. Sheng Sheng, you are too adorable. Are you really not considering dating someone in college?”

Pei Yisheng shook his head. “I don’t have any plans for that yet. Senior, look here, hasn’t this part started to unravel?”

“Let me see. Linda, come and re-sew this part, and check the entire outfit while you’re at it.”

Meng Zihua was decisive and efficient when working. Pei Yisheng silently let out a breath.

Matters of the heart felt too distant for him. He needed to focus on living each day well first.

In the blink of an eye, the exhibition day arrived. Pei Yisheng woke up early and went with Su Yiyi to find Meng Zihua. When they arrived at the studio, the place was already buzzing with activity.

Pei Yisheng quickly changed into his costume and sat obediently in a chair to wait for his makeup.

Su Yiyi sat beside him, touching the fabric of his outfit, and sighed. “Sheng Sheng, this costume suits you so well.”

Meng Zihua walked over and greeted them. “Once the wig is on and the makeup is done, it will be even more perfect.”

Su Yiyi nodded eagerly. “I wish I had brought my sketchbook. I’m bursting with inspiration right now.”

“Just draw on your phone. It will take a while for the makeup anyway.”

Pei Yisheng’s previous two makeup trials had taken nearly two hours, and sitting still was quite boring.

However, this time, since the look was finalized, even with careful application, it only took an hour.

Then, the fully costumed group took a car and entered the venue through the back door of the exhibition hall.

This exhibition was unprecedented in scale. The approved venue was as large as five football fields and five stories high, covering anime, novels, games, and movies. No matter how niche the pairing, it was likely to appear here.

The most renowned creators in the community gathered, with merchandise and fan books that couldn’t fit into a suitcase. The popular pairing booths were surrounded by people three deep, and the aisles were shoulder-to-shoulder.

Their game characters were assigned to the third floor. Meng Zihua’s studio had taken an official commission from a game company to feature twelve popular characters voted by the public. Their designated activity area was large and located near the center, a testament to the game’s popularity.

Pei Yisheng was cosplaying one of the most popular characters. On his way from the backstage to the venue, the sounds of praise threatened to drown out his hearing.

    “He’s so beautiful.”

“This cosplayer is so tall. The skirt is supported so nicely, and the costume design is so thoughtful. Can I take a photo with him later?”

“Will the cosplayer do fan service? I’m going to stay right here by him today. I absolutely cannot miss fan service from such an excellent cosplayer!”

“Oh my god, his skin is amazing. It looks like his face is glowing.”

“Among all the ‘madams’ online, this madam is the most beautiful!”

“Beautiful and melancholic madam, please step on me, hehehe~”

    “Wow, you’re a pervert!”

“When the madam’s hand fans past, the first thing you smell is the madam’s fragrance~”

    “Ahhh, you’re a pervert too!”

Pei Yisheng maintained a faint smile, diligently playing the role of the madam. He didn’t even stop the character’s hand movements. The dense clicking of camera shutters effectively masked his nervousness, even though a groundhog was screaming frantically inside his heart.

He knew people would be enthusiastic, but he hadn’t expected them to be this enthusiastic!

Excited faces were directed at him, shouting “Wife,” “Madam,” “Baby,” and “Teacher, look at me!” There were also elaborate, cute banners and merchandise. During his hour of work, Pei Yisheng truly experienced the pure passion of the fans.

When he stepped off the stage to change into a new outfit, Su Yiyi rushed over and asked, “How was it? Wasn’t it incredibly fun?”

Although Su Yiyi had come up with Pei Yisheng, he could only wait outside the venue and was eventually squeezed to the edges by the growing crowd. Su Yiyi had signaled to Pei Yisheng that he was going to check on Cheng Cheng and had only just returned. Along the way, he took photos of everyone he met; his camera shutter was practically smoking.

Pei Yisheng nodded. “It was fun. Everyone was very kind.”

“They were friendly to you, but they nearly squeezed my shoes off. This was truly an unforgettable day. I absolutely have to edit a vlog when I get back.”

Pei Yisheng knew he had a social media account with ten thousand followers. Hearing this, he smiled and said, “The organizer should pay you for the advertising.”

“Next time. What can I say, I’m kind-hearted,” Su Yiyi said, shaking his head.

After changing clothes and working for another hour, Pei Yisheng’s morning shift was over. Meng Zihua negotiated with the organizer and secured half an hour for photos, plus some time for autographs. Pei Yisheng wasn’t sure what he should sign.

He had never been a public figure, and his name was ordinary.

Finally, at Su Yiyi’s suggestion, he signed “Feiyi” (Non-Clothes). It was a novel experience.

Meng Zihua’s studio still had work the next day, but this time, the studio staff could manage on their own, so Pei Yisheng didn’t need to step in. Having earned a rare high income, Pei Yisheng gave himself a break, lying in his dorm, eating fruit, and relaxing.

Su Yiyi was also satisfied with his day of fun. Knowing that Pei Yisheng was alone in his dorm, he came over to edit his video.

Perhaps he truly had a talent for directing and editing, coupled with an eye for beauty, because Su Yiyi’s video received an unexpectedly positive response after being posted.

The organizer learned about it and contacted him, initiating another wave of promotion. Collaborating with major platforms and bloggers, the exhibition was thoroughly popularized, driving up sales for all the official merchandise.

Meng Zihua’s studio also gained widespread recognition. That evening, she called Pei Yisheng. At the time, he and Su Yiyi were choosing a restaurant. They had agreed that Pei Yisheng would treat, but since Su Yiyi’s video had become popular and generated good revenue, he was also vying to pay for Pei Yisheng’s meal.

“Sheng Sheng, please consider it. This job is genuinely simple. I’m your senior; would I trick you? All the preliminary work is handled by the staff. You just need to show up as the beautiful female character. With the wig and makeup, no one is asking if you’re the one playing the madam anymore, right?”

Pei Yisheng knew his senior was trying to help him out of kindness, but that was precisely why he felt awkward accepting everything. Seeing his hesitation, Su Yiyi urgently mouthed, “Say yes, say yes. I’ll help you manage the account.” He pointed to the social media app on his phone.

Pei Yisheng blinked, took a deep breath, and said, “Thank you, Senior. I will do my best.”

Meng Zihua was delighted. “That’s the spirit! I believe in your ability, and you need to believe in yourself, Sheng Sheng. You have far more potential than you realize. Don’t limit yourself, don’t overthink things. Everything will get better.”

“I’ve chosen the restaurant! I’m paying! To celebrate your new job!” Su Yiyi exclaimed as soon as Pei Yisheng hung up the phone.

Meng Zihua acted quickly. Leveraging the current traffic and popularity, she registered the “Feiyi” account for Pei Yisheng and immediately started operating it with the character videos from the CP exhibition, a strategy that coincided with Su Yiyi’s idea.

If they were going to do it, they had to do it seriously.

With a stable job and a basic salary, Pei Yisheng reduced the frequency of his shifts at the bar.

The bar owner was quite regretful and tried to keep him several times, finally managing to secure Pei Yisheng for just one shift a week. After all, Pei Yisheng was good-looking and didn’t cause trouble. Although the owner didn’t know why Cao Qing was protecting him, fewer fights meant better business.

On Saturday night, Pei Yisheng had just finished his shift and was carrying a small snack gifted by the boss back to the dorm building when he noticed the dorm light was on. He was slightly confused. Had he forgotten to turn off the light before leaving?

When Pei Yisheng reached the door, he realized it wasn’t closed either.

Wen Xiuyun was back and waiting for him.

The trip was originally scheduled for half a month, but the supervising instructor had a last-minute issue, extending the stay by another week. Although Wen Xiuyun was unhappy with the change, he didn’t act independently and return early. He used the resulting break time to select several gifts for Pei Yisheng.

He flew straight to the dorm after landing, only to find it empty, as expected.

Someone had already told him that Pei Yisheng was working part-time at a bar. Wen Xiuyun wanted to see how late Pei Yisheng had to work.

It was past two in the morning, and there was still no sign of Pei Yisheng returning downstairs.

Wen Xiuyun tapped his fingers on the desk, considering the likelihood of Pei Yisheng accepting if he extended an olive branch now.

For him and Song Wen, money and jobs were easily obtainable things, and giving them away was nothing special. It was only Pei Yisheng’s high moral standards that consistently made it difficult for him and Song Wen to speak up.

But how much time could a person afford to waste?

Pei Yisheng had to balance his studies and earn money to support his family. He wasn’t made of iron; he would eventually wear himself out if he continued like this.

Wen Xiuyun adamantly refused to admit he felt pity. He just thought Pei Yisheng was wasting his face and figure. He clearly had a shortcut but refused to take it.

He stared at the person walking through the doorway. In early autumn, the mornings and evenings were already cold. Pei Yisheng was wearing a trench coat and carrying a glass pot containing steaming white fungus and pear soup. His breathing was slightly ragged, perhaps from rushing up the stairs.

His complexion was rosy, whether from the night wind or naturally good health.

His eyes were as bright as ever—large, almond-shaped, clean, and translucent.

“You’re back? Are you tired? I brought white fungus and pear soup. Would you like some?”

Wen Xiuyun waved his hand. “No, you drink it. I just finished washing up.”

Pei Yisheng knew that young masters wouldn’t casually eat or drink things. Although he knew the answer before asking, he still went through the motions. Since Wen Xiuyun declined, he didn’t bother getting a small bowl and just took a large ladle to drink himself.

The white fungus was thick, the pear sweet. Drinking a bowl on a cold night warmed him from head to toe.

“Sheng Sheng, would you like to come work for my family’s company?”

The words Wen Xiuyun had been preparing to say for a long time were drowned out by the ringing of a phone.

Pei Yisheng picked up his phone. The caller was Cao Qing.
