Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Yay, I’m about to be free!

Qin Zhou hadn’t expected the person to be so frail that he could fall just walking down the stairs. He had intended to watch with cold indifference, but his hands moved faster than his brain. In a flash, he lunged forward and caught the person, instinctively weighing him. He was surprisingly light.

He looked down and saw the crown of Pei Yisheng’s head, perfectly round and smooth.

Pei Yisheng’s eyes were wide. The strong chest muscles right in front of him, almost enveloping him, brought a faint scent of tobacco. His first instinct was to lean back hard to create distance, but because Qin Zhou was holding him, he could barely move, only able to tilt his head and meet Qin Zhou’s chin.

    “…”

What he feared had come to pass.

“Um, thank you,” Pei Yisheng said, flashing the gentle, harmless smile he had practiced in the mirror, his heart pounding like a stampede.

From this angle, he couldn’t see Qin Zhou’s eyes, making it impossible to guess why Qin Zhou had helped him.

However, Qin Zhou was unfairly handsome. Even from this awkward angle, his nose bridge looked high, his eyes deep-set, and his physique was so impressive. It truly made one jealous.

Pei Yisheng was often troubled by his small frame, which meant no matter how much he worked out, he only ever had a thin layer of muscle.

Qin Zhou inexplicably disliked the smile Pei Yisheng displayed. He scoffed, “Frail.”

    Weak, and fake.

Qin Zhou immediately slapped a label on Pei Yisheng. He released his grip, saw that the person could stand, and turned back to his chair. His phone was still lying nearby. He picked it up and saw people in the public chat already cursing him for being AFK.

Qin Zhou didn’t even twitch an eyebrow, maneuvering his character to clear the minion wave.

Pei Yisheng was hesitant to speak, then wanted to speak again. He internally ranted eight thousand sentences in a second to satisfy himself before closing his eyes tightly and scurrying off to the bathroom.

Only after finishing in the bathroom did Pei Yisheng become timid.

He hid behind the door, biting his lower lip as he reflected on his behavior just now. That tiny hint of defiance shouldn’t have angered Qin Zhou, right?

Besides, he wasn’t wrong. How could Qin Zhou call him frail!

Pei Yisheng huffed, gently opened the door, gently closed the door, and gently walked past Qin Zhou. He glanced at Qin Zhou’s phone out of the corner of his eye. Good heavens, he was playing fiercely. He just saw a pentakill.

He swallowed, then quietly climbed into his bed.

Qin Zhou lifted his eyelids and glanced at the swaying bed curtain. He mentally erased the label he’d given Pei Yisheng. Not that frail, but a bit cowardly.

    Quite amusing, actually.

Qin Zhou’s lips curved. The results screen showed MVP again. The teammates who had been cursing earlier were now lining up in his friend requests. He scrolled through his friends list and pulled Lin Jiayu in to play.

Listening to the occasional concise command from the young master on the bed, Pei Yisheng slowly drifted off to sleep.

It was a long, deep sleep. When Pei Yisheng opened his eyes, he felt refreshed, his bones cracking satisfyingly. He pulled back the curtain. Sunlight poured generously onto the floor, illuminating the dorm room like scattered gold.

The dorm was empty, with only faint dust motes dancing in the air.

None of the protagonists were present. Even Qin Zhou’s bed, where he had returned last night, was neatly made as if no one had slept in it.

Pei Yisheng inwardly cheered, rubbing his hands together and piously clasping them to make a wish to the heavens:

Please, please, let the plot move faster.

He really didn’t want to interact with the various Protagonist Gongs anymore. It was truly exhausting!

    “Knock, knock, knock—”

“Sheng Sheng, are you feeling better?” The door opened, revealing a fashionable chestnut-haired head. Seeing only Pei Yisheng in the room, Su Yiyi, who lived across the hall, swaggered in. He held up the breakfast in his hand. “See, I’m the best, right? I remembered to bring you breakfast. Come and eat.”

Pei Yisheng’s eyes curved into a smile. “Thank you. I was just about to get dressed and go eat.”

Su Yiyi hummed proudly and plopped down next to him. “I knew they weren’t reliable. Besides, I haven’t seen you all day, and I haven’t eaten with you in two days. I missed you terribly.”

Pei Yisheng took a sip of porridge and said, “Don’t be so dramatic. You came to the dorm to see me yesterday.”

Su Yiyi pouted and said crossly, “It was only three minutes! I hadn’t even finished telling you the gossip when your roommate glared at me with crossed eyebrows, as if I was stealing you away.”

He had known he liked guys for a long time. When he first arrived, he had developed crushes on Wen Xiuyun and Song Wen from the neighboring dorm. After all, they were handsome. But after interacting with them, he realized their personalities were terrible, and even the filter of being campus heartthrobs couldn’t save them. Plus, they were clearly treating Pei Yisheng differently, so Su Yiyi quickly lost interest.

He pitied his friend, who was still caught in the intense attention of the two handsome men in his dorm.

“Sheng Sheng, when you had a fever this time, which of them behaved better?” Su Yiyi couldn’t change his gossipy nature and wanted the firsthand scoop on his best friend’s drama.

Pei Yisheng calmly munched on a bun. “What behavior? Just the behavior of roommates.”

“No way. My gaydar is very strong,” Su Yiyi said, full of doubt. “They are clearly acting weird. Or are you just oblivious?”

Pei Yisheng reiterated, “You’re overthinking it. They are just helpful and concerned about their classmate.”

“…” Su Yiyi was speechless for a moment. His gaze scrutinized Pei Yisheng’s righteous and firm face, feeling the futility of casting pearls before swine. He clicked his tongue. “Anyway, be careful. I don’t think the look in their eyes is right.”

Pei Yisheng blinked, thinking, My friend, you are still too naive.

They were all loyal followers of the Protagonist Shou. How could they be interested in him just because they took care of him once or twice and said some ambiguous things? At most, they were using him for amusement. If he took it seriously, he would truly lose.

He was very clear about his own positioning: he just wanted to be a good, safe, background character.

He wondered if the Protagonist Shou had arrived yet, and if he had run into the Protagonist Gongs. Pei Yisheng worried about them internally, wishing he could play matchmaker. He would immediately tie the red string tightly around them so they could be eternally entwined and stop harming innocent bystanders.

After eating, Su Yiyi didn’t want to go back so soon. His dorm was full of smelly straight guys, and the dorm hygiene crisis was obvious. As a refined Gay Guy, he was suffering greatly, which was why he had been so proactive in befriending Pei Yisheng on the very first day.

Su Yiyi sighed. “Sheng Sheng, I can’t stand living here just after starting school. I want to rent an apartment off-campus soon. Do you want to come with me?”

Pei Yisheng had considered this and had specifically checked the school policy. “But I heard you can only apply in sophomore year. Can we do it early?”

Su Yiyi patted his chest. “Guaranteed. I looked into it. Do you know Qin Zhou?”

Pei Yisheng thought, I know him too well. I can recite his outlaw deeds by heart, and I slept in the same dorm as him just a few hours ago. But what does moving off-campus have to do with Qin Zhou?

Su Yiyi assumed Pei Yisheng didn’t know, winking at him. He pulled out his phone and quickly sent him a few photos, his lips curled high, becoming lively. “These are my treasured collection. Don’t say I don’t think of you.”

Pei Yisheng opened his phone and saw, good heavens, they were all photos of Qin Zhou playing basketball, specifically when his jersey flew up during a dunk, exposing half of his abs. He didn’t know how Su Yiyi had collected such a complete set. The screen, apart from the bright jersey, was filled with dense abs, making Pei Yisheng dizzy.

“This… maybe don’t think of me. I don’t really need this, haha,” Pei Yisheng said awkwardly.

Su Yiyi looked shocked that his friend couldn’t appreciate the finer things, and said, disappointed, “I hate that you’re a block of wood!”

The “block of wood” just smiled without speaking. Su Yiyi pouted, but seeing Pei Yisheng’s eager, bright eyes fixed on him, he continued.

“Qin Zhou doesn’t like living in the dorms. He moved out right after school started in freshman year. But that’s against the rules, right? The Qin family donated two laboratory buildings, so the school implemented a new policy: if you can complete the first-year credits during the first semester, you can move out early. How about it? Want to try?”

Pei Yisheng was immediately tempted without hesitation. He grabbed Su Yiyi’s hand and sincerely exclaimed, “Yiyi, you are my best friend!”

Su Yiyi made a sound of disgust, getting goosebumps. He rubbed his arms and said dismissively, “Don’t try to seduce me. There’s no way I’m going to be the 1 for you.”

    Pei Yisheng: “…”

The genuine emotion vanished, replaced only by despair for the world of gay men.

Su Yiyi cackled. Teasing a straight guy was truly fun.

“Then let’s go to the Library this afternoon. Let’s check out the environment we’ll be fighting in.”

Pei Yisheng agreed. After setting a time to leave in the afternoon, Su Yiyi went back.

The September sun shone brightly. Pei Yisheng and Su Yiyi chose to walk in the shade. When they reached a long, shaded corridor, Su Yiyi refused to walk any further, pulling Pei Yisheng down onto a bench to rest.

“Is our school this big? Why do we have to walk so far?”

Su Yiyi was starting to feel discouraged.

Pei Yisheng felt fine and was full of energy. He encouraged him, “It’s more uncomfortable to rest here, in the middle of nowhere. Just hold on a little longer. When we get to the Library’s water bar, I’ll buy you a drink.”

Su Yiyi cheered up. “Okay, let’s go.”

While talking to Pei Yisheng, Su Yiyi looked around to distract himself. As he looked, he reached out and stopped Pei Yisheng. “Sheng Sheng, look quickly! Is that my husband up ahead!”

“Who is your husband?!” Pei Yisheng asked, startled. Why hadn’t he heard that Su Yiyi had a husband?!!

Su Yiyi let out an “Aiya,” slightly embarrassed. “It’s Qin Zhou, everyone’s cyber husband. Look, is that him up ahead? Who is that clinging to him? So brave.”

Pei Yisheng was speechless. A cyber husband? He was too tired to complain. He followed the direction of Su Yiyi’s finger. Qin Zhou looked impatient, and a slightly shorter boy pulling a suitcase was blocking his path. He couldn’t hear their conversation, but the radar in Pei Yisheng’s mind was beeping rapidly.

Good heavens, he hadn’t just stumbled upon the famous first meeting scene between Qin Zhou and the Protagonist Shou, Fang Xin, had he!

Was this something an ordinary bystander should be watching? Pei Yisheng grabbed Su Yiyi. “Let’s go, let’s go. Qin Zhou will see you gossiping about him and rush over to beat you up.”

“No way…” Su Yiyi hesitated, unwilling to leave. After all, not everyone got the chance to gossip live. But when he looked up, he saw Qin Zhou looking coldly in their direction. He immediately chickened out, grabbing Pei Yisheng’s arm and scurrying away.

In his haste, Pei Yisheng looked back and saw Qin Zhou lowering his head to speak to Fang Xin. A satisfied smile curved his lips.

Yay, I’m about to be free!
