    Chapter 10

Qin Zhou thought, truly stunningly beautiful.

Why was Cao Qing calling him?

Pei Yisheng didn’t know the reason, but he answered anyway. Given how much Cao Qing loved to drink and party, he might be lying on the side of some road in the middle of the night, and this might be the last number he dialed. It was safer to answer and listen.

As expected, the call yielded no useful conversation. Cao Qing was drunk, insisting on becoming his subordinate, asking Qin Zhou to protect him while also protecting his new subordinate.

What kind of nonsense was this?

Pei Yisheng heard other voices on the line and knew that even if he hung up, Cao Qing would be looked after. He casually placated him with a few words and ended the call.

After hanging up, Pei Yisheng remembered that Wen Xiuyun seemed to have spoken to him earlier. “What did you just say? Sorry, the phone ringing was too loud, I didn’t catch it.”

Wen Xiuyun smiled. “Nothing, I forgot too.”

There was no need to repeat what was interrupted. His suggestion earlier had been an impulse; now that he was calm, he realized Pei Yisheng might not agree, so why bother embarrassing himself?

Moreover… Pei Yisheng was different from before.

Although Wen Xiuyun didn’t know who Pei Yisheng was talking to, he could tell from the tone that it was quite intimate. A call at this hour meant they were at least friends, and this person hadn’t existed before he left. It had only been half a month.

How could Pei Yisheng be so restless? Ignoring Song Wen was one thing—Song Wen was indeed not a good person—but in all fairness, he had never exposed his unpleasant side to Pei Yisheng. So why was Pei Yisheng so strongly guarded against him?

Wen Xiuyun narrowed his eyes. He had long considered Pei Yisheng his possession. He wouldn’t let Pei Yisheng run away.

In the blink of an eye, Wen Xiuyun decided not to go home for a while. He wanted Pei Yisheng to recognize reality: only he was Pei Yisheng’s best choice.

Wen Xiuyun picked up a bag from beside the desk. “These are the souvenirs I brought back this time. Sheng Sheng, see if you like them?”

“Why did you bring me a gift? That’s too extravagant, I can’t accept it.”

“It’s nothing valuable. Just little things I picked up while browsing the folk street. You’ll see when you look.”

Pei Yisheng opened the gift box and indeed saw a jumble of items: a small ceramic pig, a handmade wooden rabbit carving, a bamboo wind chime. A quick count showed seven or eight items. They were certainly not expensive, but they showed that some thought had gone into selecting them.

He closed the box. “Thank you.”

“As long as you don’t find them childish. It’s getting late, you should rest soon.” Wen Xiuyun smiled gently.

As if granted a reprieve, Pei Yisheng zipped into the bathroom, quickly took care of his hygiene, exchanged goodnights with Wen Xiuyun, and climbed into bed to sleep.

He slept until noon. The dorm room was already empty.

On his desk, however, was a cold breakfast, next to a sticky note left by Wen Xiuyun.

Pei Yisheng sighed, feeling that the trouble was escalating.

No matter how kind or considerate Wen Xiuyun was, he was still one of the Protagonist Gongs, and fundamentally not a good person—his pleasant demeanor was all a disguise. Therefore, Pei Yisheng refused to take any of Wen Xiuyun’s actions to heart.

If he were to judge by actions and not intentions, Wen Xiuyun was thoughtful and polite, and he should reciprocate. Simply accepting everything was definitely not an option; otherwise, when the time came to settle scores, he would have nothing to say.

So, when exactly was Fang Xin going to move in? Why hadn’t he used his charm to completely bewitch the Protagonist Gongs yet?

He really couldn’t handle this much longer.

Pei Yisheng soon noticed that Wen Xiuyun was spending more and more time in the dorm and becoming increasingly intimate with him.

When he returned from the Library with Su Yiyi at night, Wen Xiuyun would leave a light on for him and prepare small snacks. Sometimes, when he was doing homework in the dorm, Wen Xiuyun would sit next to him and ask if he needed help.

Every time this happened, Pei Yisheng felt a chill run down his spine.

He proactively extended his study time outside the dorm and was extremely active in his work. He avoided spending time with Wen Xiuyun in the dorm whenever possible.

He had a feeling that Wen Xiuyun was planning something big, and his gut told him he couldn’t accept it.

The weather was getting colder recently, and Pei Yisheng was prone to sleeping in. Especially with all the overthinking lately, his sleep quality was poor, making it even harder to leave his warm blanket. But he had work today; he had to go to Meng Zihua’s studio. He counted to a hundred with his eyes closed before gritting his teeth and getting up.

No wonder it was cold—it was drizzling.

The fine, dense raindrops were hazy, making him shiver when they landed on him. Pei Yisheng wrapped his clothes tighter and, after walking less than a hundred meters, started sniffing and hailing a taxi.

When he arrived at the studio, Meng Zihua was handing out milk tea. It was warm and sweet, and Pei Yisheng eagerly slurped the taro balls, chewing rapidly.

After a month of immersion, Pei Yisheng was completely comfortable with cross-dressing for cosplay. While he couldn’t say he enjoyed it, he was certainly no longer worried or resistant. Even when Linda handed him minimal fabric to wear, Pei Yisheng put it on without batting an eye.

Today’s cosplay was an anime character: a twin-tailed loli. The skirt barely covered his butt, and his long, fair legs were encased in slouch socks. Wearing the custom-made Lolita shoes, he looked like an oversized doll, so adorable that the boys in the studio kept coming over to peek, looking hesitant and longing, which actually made Pei Yisheng blush.

After an hour of shooting, the studio photos and post-production still didn’t meet the client’s requirements. Meng Zihua decided: outdoor shooting.

To ensure the integrity of Pei Yisheng’s look, Meng Zihua found him a furry cape. “Sheng Sheng, it’s a bit cold. I’m sorry you have to sacrifice a bit. Don’t worry, there’s a subsidy for outdoor shoots. I, your senior, will definitely compensate you handsomely.”

“Senior, you don’t need to say that,” Pei Yisheng said obediently, wrapped tightly in the cape, speaking like a delicate white sugar cake. “Let’s go quickly, the sooner we shoot, the sooner we finish.”

Meng Zihua’s studio had been open for years, and today’s difficult client ranked among the top three. No matter how excellent their model was or how powerful their post-production, the client always found fault, as if they were deliberately trying to cause trouble.

From dawn until dusk, Meng Zihua’s patience finally ran out.

“Last time. If this doesn’t work, tell him to get lost.”

Pei Yisheng’s fingertips were white with cold, and he felt drowsy. Meng Zihua felt terrible seeing this and immediately called a car for Pei Yisheng. “Sheng Sheng, go back to the dorm and rest. Take a hot shower first, then take cold medicine. Don’t get sick in this weather. This damn client, he’s going straight onto my blacklist!”

Pei Yisheng nodded groggily and was escorted into the car by Meng Zihua.

Meng Zihua watched the car disappear around the corner, but she felt like she had forgotten something. Before the flash of inspiration could take hold, the client called her back.

It wasn’t until Pei Yisheng was almost at the dorm building that Meng Zihua remembered: she forgot to tell Pei Yisheng to change clothes!

    Help!!!

Pei Yisheng fell asleep as soon as he got into the car. It was nearly an hour’s drive, and Pei Yisheng slept quite comfortably. The professional driver had the warm air conditioning on, allowing him to fully relax. When his phone rang, Pei Yisheng lazily answered the call.

“Sheng Sheng! Are you still! In girl clothes!”

    “!!!”

Pei Yisheng opened his eyes in horror. In the rearview mirror, his eyes were blinking, buling-buling. He touched his bare legs—they felt warm.

But Pei Yisheng’s heart was freezing.

    What should he do?

Meng Zihua offered suggestions over the phone: put on a mask, take off the cape, find a time when there were few people, and sneak back into the dorm. As long as no one checked, he wouldn’t be exposed. Or, don’t go back and stay outside school for the night.

Pei Yisheng immediately ruled out hotels near the school. That area was full of young couples checking in, and the probability of running into classmates was similar to being on campus. Plus, he’d have to register at the front desk, which was even worse.

Going to a distant hotel would be almost as much trouble as going back to Meng Zihua’s studio—another hour of travel. Pei Yisheng was truly exhausted.

He looked up at the dorm balcony. It was dark. No one was in the room, and it was past lights-out time for the building. There shouldn’t be many people in the hallway. He could probably sneak in.

Pei Yisheng pumped himself up, stepped out of the car, splashing rainwater, and quickly ran to the door. He secretly swiped his card to open the access control and ran up the stairs lightly and swiftly. The moment he closed the door, his heart was still pounding.

    He succeeded! Yes!

Pei Yisheng shared the good news with his senior, and under her praise, he floated off to grab his pajamas and take a shower.

Pei Yisheng hummed a tune, slowly untying his hair ties.

He was completely unaware that the moment he stepped out of the car, he had been seen.

Qin Zhou had been feeling annoyed lately. He felt something was off about himself; he kept wanting to return to the dorm for no reason. Once a week, he would lecture Cao Qing, listening to him report how obedient and sensible he was, and how he took good care of Pei Yisheng at the bar.

After listening today, he couldn’t resist having a few drinks. While not drunk, he felt mentally relaxed. He walked back to the dorm building, hands casually tucked into his pockets.

From a hundred meters away, he saw a long-haired girl step out of a car. A fleeting glimpse of half her face told Qin Zhou immediately that she was very beautiful, and her profile even looked somewhat familiar.

The girl headed straight for their dorm entrance. Strangely, she managed to enter smoothly.

Qin Zhou pressed his tongue against his cheek and followed without hesitation.

He carefully maintained a distance from the girl, ascending the stairs in parallel. The sweet scent of orange blossom drifted in the air, acting like an invisible thread guiding Qin Zhou.

At the stairwell turn, her hair lightly lifted, and the complex skirt hem swung in a small arc. The long, straight legs beneath the skirt took three steps at a time, the calf muscles taut, beautiful beyond belief.

Qin Zhou thought, truly stunningly beautiful.

He even noticed the half shoe print on the steps, like Cinderella leaving before midnight, the water evaporating slowly into the air.

Qin Zhou followed at a steady pace. Seeing that he was about to reach his dorm floor, he even had the leisure to think: Who was playing such a game, being even more lawless than him, bringing a girlfriend into the male dorm? But this wasn’t very gentlemanly. So, if he poached her and gave the girl a better life, it shouldn’t matter, right?

“Hey, Qin Zhou, perfect timing. I needed to find you. The teacher said you absolutely must fill out this form. It won’t take two minutes. Just fill it out here, and I can submit it.”

In those two seconds, the figure upstairs vanished.

Qin Zhou looked coldly at the newcomer. The thick-skinned class monitor was fearless, even pushing the form closer to Qin Zhou’s face.
