Chapter Index

Ye Qingyun truly hadn’t expected Gu Shenyuan to say that, and he couldn’t even find a reason to refute it.

When evening arrived, just before going to sleep, Ye Qingyun was still holding onto a sliver of hope, trying to find a reason to convince Gu Shenyuan.

“Stop thinking. Sleep,” Gu Shenyuan covered Ye Qingyun’s eyes, forcing him to close them.

It was already Ye Qingyun’s usual sleep time, and coupled with the reassuring aura emanating from Gu Shenyuan, Ye Qingyun quickly drifted off into a hazy sleep despite his reluctance.

The world in his dream was constantly shifting. When Ye Qingyun opened his eyes again, he found himself floating in a vast, white space, with a small, pitch-black doll sitting in front of him.

This scene was truly bizarre. Ye Qingyun pinched himself, and when he felt no pain, he finally relaxed.

It was a dream, after all, so there was no need to be afraid.

“Who are you?” Ye Qingyun asked the dark little figure.

The small figure stood with its hands behind its back, its tone mysterious as it said, “You don’t know who I am? I am the famous World Consciousness.”

Ye Qingyun looked bewildered: “…What is the World Consciousness?”

The little doll paused, then gritted its teeth and switched to a term it disliked but knew Ye Qingyun would understand: “I am a spirit, the spirit of this world!”

“Oh? A little spirit?” Ye Qingyun finally understood. He chuckled, “To dream of something like this, my imagination must be quite rich. Little spirit, why are you looking for me?”

“…This isn’t imagination!” The small figure, hands behind its back, began circling Ye Qingyun. It sounded a little wronged as it said, “I went through great pains to resurrect you. How can this be imagination?”

Ye Qingyun was utterly stunned that it would say such a thing.

“I’ve been watching you two,” the little doll said, holding its head high with its hands behind its back. “Gu Shenyuan’s emotional fluctuations are too intense, and it makes me very uncomfortable. I think you might need my help right now, so I came to see you.”

When the little doll said “see,” it meant it literally. Ye Qingyun could feel its gaze fixed on him, circling him for a 360-degree appraisal.

“So much time has passed. You should be recovering your memories soon,” the little doll sighed.

Several thoughts flashed through Ye Qingyun’s mind, and he suddenly grasped the intended meaning of “World Consciousness.”

He didn’t know where the impression came from, but he thought World Consciousnesses were supposed to be quite fierce. However, this one seemed rather benevolent.

An awareness that knew everything about this world might also know whether he had truly liked Pu Tian.

Ye Qingyun blurted out the question. The little doll said proudly, “You’ve asked the right person. Back then, I asked your System the same question. It was indeed false.”

Ye Qingyun didn’t know where his System came from, but hearing the answer, he couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. He then asked, “You can enter my dream, so can you enter Gu Shenyuan’s dream? Can you help me tell Gu Shenyuan this truth?”

“Of course I can!” The World Consciousness was extremely confident. It spun around and vanished from Ye Qingyun’s sight.

Ye Qingyun waited in the white expanse. Before long, he saw the World Consciousness return.

It had left as a healthy World Consciousness, but it returned stumbling, clearly having been beaten up.

    Ye Qingyun: “…”

The World Consciousness wailed, “He, he hit me! He didn’t believe me!”

Should he say that Gu Shenyuan was worthy of being the Protagonist? He even hit the World Consciousness without hesitation?

The World Consciousness clung to Ye Qingyun’s shoulder, crying, “I was worried he wouldn’t find a wife! He deserves to be single!”

Ye Qingyun patted the little doll’s back: “…Don’t cry. I’ll help you talk to him.”

The crying of the World Consciousness gradually subsided. Ye Qingyun looked at the little black figure, and a plan slowly formed in his mind.

Ye Qingyun asked softly, “Besides answering questions, what other help can you provide? Can you… manifest in human form in the real world?”

The World Consciousness lifted its face, hesitated for a moment, and nodded: “But not for too long, only for a brief moment.”

A few days passed, and the day Ye Qingyun and the World Consciousness had agreed upon arrived.

After discussing it, he and the World Consciousness had finalized a plan.

The World Consciousness would pretend to be a malicious villain who poisoned him out of jealousy. Ye Qingyun would then pretend that the poison was a special concoction whose Antidote could only be obtained if Gu Shenyuan personally admitted that they were each other’s only one. If Gu Shenyuan refused to admit it, Ye Qingyun would die from failed resuscitation.

Of course, the poison was fake, just a special effect, and wouldn’t actually harm him.

According to the World Consciousness, he might recover his memories soon. If that news was true, it was best to complete the plan quickly.

In the morning, Ye Qingyun got out of bed and looked for Gu Shenyuan, finding that Gu Shenyuan was indeed absent.

Gu Shenyuan had a meeting that morning, which was why Ye Qingyun had chosen this day.

After eating the breakfast Gu Shenyuan had specially prepared for him, Ye Qingyun sat down to rest for a while. When he estimated it was about time for Gu Shenyuan to return, Ye Qingyun used the excuse of taking a walk and went to the small garden.

The weather was sunny, a gentle breeze brushed his face, and the small garden was empty.

Ye Qingyun walked seemingly casually until the corner of his eye caught sight of Gu Shenyuan.

Gu Shenyuan finished his meeting and hurried to find Ye Qingyun.

Although he had arranged many guards around Ye Qingyun, and the area was very safe, he couldn’t feel at ease as long as Ye Qingyun wasn’t by his side.

Gu Shenyuan returned to his residence and found Ye Qingyun wasn’t inside. His heart immediately tightened.

Gu Shenyuan opened his terminal and saw a message from the guards responsible for Ye Qingyun’s safety, informing him that Ye Qingyun was taking a walk in the small garden.

Gu Shenyuan felt slightly relieved, but his pace didn’t slow down at all as he rushed toward the small garden.

Gu Shenyuan hurried to the small garden and finally saw Ye Qingyun.

Ye Qingyun was walking slowly under the shade of a tree. The surroundings were quiet, and fragmented sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, sprinkling onto him. It was beautiful, like a bubble that might disappear the next second.

Gu Shenyuan finally slowed his steps slightly and raised a hand to straighten his clothes.

Ye Qingyun also saw him and smiled as he turned his head.

“Is your meeting over?” Ye Qingyun asked. “Have you eaten?”

A smile unconsciously appeared in Gu Shenyuan’s eyes. Just as he was about to answer, a sudden change occurred.

The guards who had been hiding in the shadows had quietly left after Gu Shenyuan arrived. This place should have been empty except for the two of them.

However, behind Ye Qingyun, a figure in black abruptly materialized out of thin air. He held a small black object in his hand, and before anyone could react, he shoved the object into Ye Qingyun’s mouth.

    “Cough—”

Ye Qingyun immediately collapsed onto the ground, clutching his chest.

Gu Shenyuan’s eyes widened. He saw the suddenly appearing black-clad figure laugh maniacally: “Hahaha, this is the consequence of surpassing me! There can only be one number one in this world! You damned—”

The black-clad figure couldn’t finish his sentence before a hand clamped around his neck.

Gu Shenyuan had moved so fast no one knew when he had arrived. His face was pale, and his eyes were chillingly dark as he squeezed the black figure’s neck: “The Antidote!”

“Hahaha, there is no Antidote,” the black figure wore a triumphant smile. “This is no ordinary poison. I specially concocted it for you two. I want you to wish for death but be unable to die!”

Gu Shenyuan’s hand tightened little by little, but the black figure, despite being choked, showed no fear on his face, only madness: “Heh, last time I activated my Ability, I happened to overhear everything you said. You dare not admit you are his only one, or he will hate you when he recovers his memories. So, with this poison, unless you dare to admit it to him, he will quickly succumb to the poison, without even time for an examination.”

The expression on the black figure’s face grew increasingly smug: “Choose between two hells! Rather than you quickly ending your pain, I’d prefer to torment you for a long time. For the rest of your life, the person you love will hate you—”

“Cough, cough, cough!” Ye Qingyun coughed violently, interrupting the black figure.

The black figure seemed to realize something and didn’t continue provoking Gu Shenyuan. Instead, he said, “I didn’t plan on living after doing this. However, as long as I can make you unhappy, I’m happy.”

Before the black figure finished speaking, his entire body scattered like dust, vanishing into the air.

The surroundings were empty again, and everything fell silent.

Ye Qingyun, lying on the ground, was lifted into a pair of trembling arms. He slightly opened his eyes and saw Gu Shenyuan, whose eyes were bloodshot.

Gu Shenyuan’s usual cold and aloof demeanor was completely gone. He was now the most ordinary of men, capable of sorrow, pain, and easily collapsing at the departure of his loved one.

Gu Shenyuan’s voice trembled: “…Qingyun, Qingyun, you can’t be hurt, you can’t be hurt.”

Ye Qingyun had planned everything perfectly: first, he would make Gu Shenyuan admit his previous statement, and then he would say he was fine. Once his memories recovered in a few days, Gu Shenyuan would know the truth, and all problems would be solved.

But looking at Gu Shenyuan in this state, Ye Qingyun immediately threw the entire plan out of his mind. He only wanted Gu Shenyuan to stop being so sad, so he coaxed, “It was all a lie. How could there be such an absurd poison in this world? It’s fake, of course. I’m fine, perfectly fine. If you don’t believe me, we can go see a doctor.”

“Don’t speak. Just listen to me.” Gu Shenyuan held Ye Qingyun, allowing him to rest in the crook of his arm. His voice was bitter, and every word seemed to require immense effort, but he still spoke clearly, word by word, “Everything you said before was true. We are each other’s only one, always have been. So… so don’t leave me again.”
